  • Eh is it worth the $40 more over the 7850?

    • +25

      3GB vram vs 2GB, 384bit memory bus vs 256bit, 1792 pipes vs 1024, 240GB/s vs 154 memory bandwidth… Yes

    • +1

Anandtech bench is handy for comparing GPUs using a bunch of actual game benchmarks.

7850 vs 7950 (looks like about 20-30% faster depending on the game, so better bang for buck, yes, although I think both cards will play new games gorgeously and smoothly for some time yet, depending on you resolution, number of monitors, etc. Very high end GPUs).

  • +1

How good is 7950? anyone mind explaining. Need some geeks here

    • very, very good despite it's drivers not unleashing anywhere near it's potential yet.

    • +1

oh sorry, i forgot, i'll dumb it down. It's a thingy you put onto a motherboard that makes stuff go quick and look gud.

      • +12

if you plug your monitor into this, it will go faster…

        • lol

    • Imo its the 2nd best card available atm (disregarding the ridiculously expensive models) especially for this price

      • Which is the best one in your opinion?

        • 7970 although the price difference isn't worth it whilst this is currently $299

        • +1

lols, and yet the 670 smacks it left ways from sunday, not only performance wise, but less heat and power usage as well. Although not quite as good a bargain as these 300 dollar 7950's for BFYB

    • Was just about to post this but Centrecom's URL is banned from Ozbargain? Any reason anybody know?

      • Woops sorry I didn't know that?
        Should I take it down?

        • +8

absolutely not. we may get a better price!

        • +2

Much rather go for pccasegear I've had enough of centrecom and their online exclusive junk.. charge at the price you want instead of trying to profit from delivery

          I'm located in Vic Metro:

PC Case Gear is $299 + $13 shipping (Star Track)
          Centrecom is $297 + $8.25 shipping (TNT)

If I remember properly PC Case Gear have a pick up from the warehouse option!

        • Pc case gear are awesome to deal with. If its within a few bucks, I always purchase thru them.

good price, but not in NSW

  • CRap, almost bought it, then I googled PC games…clocked them all of the big ones (max payne, sleeping dogs, etc) on the 360 already…

No point if I can't find something to play…

Can anyone suggest some titles that might make this worth it for me?

    • +3

if you spent $300 on a graphic card, you have to setup eyefinity which kills your wills to play games on console :)

    • +5

CRap, almost bought it, then I googled PC games…clocked them all of the big ones (max payne, sleeping dogs, etc) on the 360 already…

Yes.. but graphics on the PC are soo much better.. especially when compared to XBOX!

      PC graphics demolish consoles…

Guild Wars 2 is launching tomorrow.. ^_^

    • +1

I've had really powerful PCs for years and recently got a cheap ps3 slim. I was shocked at how poor the graphic were - low res, no anti-aliasing, etc.

Get the Witcher 2, great PC game optimized for PC.

    • Don't have the time to spend on online games so guild war 2 doesn't interest me…

Hmm…even though its a great deal, I've decided to pass on this..

Hopefully it'll be even cheaper when the next big title comes out

  • How much less watt it consume b4 OC ? Is it wise as in watt/performance ?

  • 3GB. Pretty nice.

  • I bought this card 2 weeks ago for $399 :(.
    Great card though.

  • Probably the best selling point is the heatsink/fans…. much better than those stock cards that rely on a single small fan at the end to blow air over the rest of the card… those ones just….. suck (loudly).

  • +2

Just got it. Thanks OzBargain…. while my wife grumbles damn you OzBargain behind me :D

  • I will have to hack up my case to make room for this! Is damn long (preemptive "that's what she said")

Any tips on the best way to do that?

    • +2

      Buy a bigger case?

You can find some pretty big ones for under $100 (That's what she said)

      • +2

Just bought the case.. Wife will not approve that =P

    • dremel?

  • Just ordered one… Worked out to $318.24 including shipping and the annoying 2% credit card surcharge you don't find out about until checkout…

Oh well… Thanks for posting this up =)

Edit: Now I gotta get myself a new CPU cooler… Anyone know any good coolers for a 2700k??

    • That's bad form for an on-line store. Was there an option given for POLI/cash transfer? Otherwise, it's not hard for them to add credit card transaction costs to every advertised price (if moms and pops can work out Paypal losses on eBay…).

Airline surcharges have made me bitter…

      • Yeh, you can do bank transfer but that takes too long or there was also the Aus post option.

    • budget? Noctua U12P is a good choice.

      • Thanks for the reply.. I don't really mind how much.. Just best bang for buck.. But I'd rather spend more now and get better, rather then upgrade soon down the track..

        I was looking at the Noctua U12P & Noctua NH-D14 & Corsair H100

Only thing is, I already have a 480 and 240 rad with dual d5 pumps from when I had water cooling setup in my case. So do you think I should just not be lazy and buy an EK CPU block and put it under water again?

        Cheers ;)

  • Id really like to get this but not sure I can justify it. Maybe I will go and get a 7770 tomorrow from MSY for $120 or so and crossfire it if it really isnt up to scratch.

    • +2

buying a new card to crossfire is a big no no. lots of issues.

    • The 7950 is in a different league to the 7770.
Even if you got perfect scaling of 100% (which never happens) with 2 7770s it would still not match a single 7950 and you would still only effectively have 1GB of memory (memory is mirrored).
Better off buying the best SINGLE card you can afford to begin with.
The 7950 for $299 is one of the best bang for your buck cards you can currently get.

      • +5

bugger it, you wore me down. The 7950 is on its way. I'll be feeding the family on tins of Pal this week.

  • Havent been keeping up with this stuff.. how come theyre so cheap now?

    • Competition from the GTX 660 Ti has made AMD cut prices on their own cards. Other than that PCCG does promotions in the same manner as other companies.

  • Hmmmm….should I get this or GTX 670? which one :(….. I'm confused.

    • +1

      http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/598?vs=550

They are pretty closely matched, but 670 is a bit faster overall, though it swings wildly in favour of one card or the other depending on the game.

      670 uses less power.

7950 has 3GB and tends to work better at extreme triple display resolutions (eg 5760x1080) without tanking so badly.

670 is faster at normal res of 1920x1080 and below.

nvidias drivers are arguably better than AMDs

you can't get a 670 for this price though, unless you include crappy brands like Palit and Galaxy

      • is Zotac a good brand? I plan to get one from Amazon

        • Zotac is a cheapo brand, not in the same league as a Gigabyte card.
Personally I wouldn't buy a Zotac card, unless it was being sold at a local store so I could return it easily if I needed to.

      • nvidia cards tend to be shorter in length than Radeons. They also tend to be cooler and quieter. My 670 is very short.

And it's not 'arguable' than nvidia drivers are better. It's fact.

The only thing in the 7950's favor is price, but it's a big one.

        Consider the GTX660 Ti also.

        • Price is not the only pro for amd cards, eyefinity also is a huge advantage. For $150 less (than 670), you have more powerful card on tri-monitor setup

        • Don't Nvidia have their own multi-monitor buzzword? Is it not as good as eyefinity?

        • That's not practical for most people. And dont you get a fish eye effect on the side screens?

        • +1

as 24 inch monitor is at $150 mark, all you need do are just 2 extra monitors, which still cheaper than buying one 27-inch. how this is not practical? also even on side screens you have fish eye effect (not always, games like fifa simply gives you 3 times of the view), you still have the most amazing gaming experience. and the point is that at high resolution, 7950 is a more powerful and cheaper card than 670.

        • +1

Don't Nvidia have their own multi-monitor buzzword? Is it not as good as eyefinity?

They do support tri-monitor. I don't know if they have a buzz word for it though. I don't like the effect because the GUI (if horizontal on the bottom) will be spread accross three screens requiring more scrolling. Your eyes will need to scroll around more also. For some games it will stretch the GUI and make it look ugly and weird.

        • +1

I say arguably because there is no scientific way to test driver quality - and no websites actually do.
To say it is straight up fact is an extreme view, because depending on a case by case basis sometimes AMD cards work better sometimes nvidia cards work better.
On average nvidia drivers are better but both companies both have their drivers problems from time to time, though AMD seem to have more problems more often.

        • +1

nvidia triple monitor support is called Surround View and it actually improved massively with the 680, 670 cards.

They can now support 3 monitors, 2 connected via DVI and 1 via HDMI and don't require any adapters. AMD cards still require you to buy an active Displayport to DVI adapter for the 3rd monitor, though some cards actually come with an adapter in the box.
They also support a 4th 'auxiliary' monitor.

AMD had a head start with their Eyefinity but nvidia are catching up fast with their support now. AMD still have the advantage of more memory and higher memory bandwidth on their cards which means they get better framerates at triple-monitor resolutions - especially in terms of minimum framerates.

Triple monitor support varies from game to game. Some games implement it perfectly, they put the GUI and cut scenes on the middle monitor, nothing gets stretched and no weird fish eye effect. Some games barely work at all, but some can be fixed with 3rd party fixes.

Racing games, FPS, and third person behind the shoulder camera games all work well in 3 screens.
Racing games in particular are incredibly good on triple screens.

I have had a 3x24" setup myself for 9 months now and there is no way I would go back to a single screen now.

        • -2

That's not practical for most people. And dont you get a fish eye effect on the side screens?

  • centercom online exclusive, does this mean i cant even pick up for that price in store ? if so stuff them ill just pick it up from pc case gear then

The "Powercolor Radeon HD7950 3GB" is also on sale for $295

    http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

The Gigabyte deal looks better though..

  • I do not play games but I plan to upgrade my PC for video and photo editing (RAW's and mkv's).
Do I benefit from having this card ?

    • Most of the video editing software does not support GPU acceleration yet.

Newer versions of Photoshop do support GPU acceleration, but there is no need to get a card this powerful for that, a lower mid range card around $100-$150 would be plenty.

      • Thanks. It's what I thought.

  • My PC is currently running a i7 920 @2.66GHz, 6GB of RAM and SLI GTX285's, would this be substantial upgrade in terms of FPS (will be playing GW2 as of tomorrow). Or would a CPU upgrade be a better option?

    Thanks in advance.

    • +1

Overclock your CPU. i7 920 is good for 3.8GHz at stock voltage if you have a good CPU heatsink.

      • Cheers,

With stock cooling what is a safe OC? Say 3.2-3.4GHz or is that still pushing it (using stock cooling)…

    • +1

No, it would only be a small upgrade. A faster CPU by itself wouldn't gain much either, the 920 is still pretty fast and games benefit much more from faster GPUs than CPUs.

To see a substantial upgrade in FPS you would need to get 2 high end cards, eg 2 x GTX670s or 2 x 7950s

  • I missed out last time due to my funds arriving once the bank opened.
They still have my $ so this is perfect…. :-)

  • I was just reading yesterday about the 7950 having a new "boost" BIOS to compete with the 660 Ti. Apparently it only recommended for the reference card, except on cards with support a Dual BIOS. Luckily, this card has Dual BIOS so you can run the boost BIOS, however seeming the card is already overclocked, I have no idea if they will play nice together: http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/faq-page.aspx?fid=…

Incidentally, the 660 Ti is still faster, and there is an overclocked version available on Amazon for US$290 but they don't ship here, and are nowhere near that price locally :(

    • I'm sure there are articles that say otherwise, but on average TomsHardware has the 7950 coming out on top (and I'm not sure but I don't think this factors in the BIOS update).

      http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-660-ti-bench…

      • Thanks for the link. The Anandtech review has the 660 Ti winning on some games, as well as power and noise: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6159/the-geforce-gtx-660-ti-re…

You could compare this OC card to the 7950 w/Boost.

If 660 Ti was $299 like it is in the US I would buy it in a second. But dollar per FPS, this 7950 is currently the best thing on the market, and I am strongly considering it.

        • +1

Depends on the res, on 2560x1600 above, 7950 beats 660ti, even 670 easily

        • ^this. Do you really think the 2nd best card in amd's range is gonna be a dodgy deal, worth worrying about benchmark reviews from every site? come on…

Just cos 1 site says the 660 is hands down better than the 7950, im sure theres another out there that says vice versa.

  • Great bargain again by PCCG! Wished they still had the HIS model in stock though.

  • +4

Let's make graphics cards bargains the new Samsung Galaxy SIII bargains! I need a new card for Guild Wars 2!

  • Great timing. Will go nicely with my new Bitfenix Prodigy build. Thanks

  • good price but with 7000 series price drops just taken effect this will be the normal price soon

    • +1

Shhhh… Please let me enjoy the feeling that I got a good bargain :P

  • Damn so tempting don't know whether to buy or wait

  • Wow this price dropped fast, I bought the Gigabyte 7870 OC edition for $400 only 4 months ago, Check the bench marks between these two models for gaming, There is only little difference between them http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7870-review-be…

  • Tough choice whether to upgrade from a Powercolor 6970 2GB. Just annoys me how loud the 6970 is.
The gigabyte cooler on the 7950 is a fair bit quieter than the reference 7950 cooler yes?

  • Good but not a great deal considering the recent price cuts.

  • Strange offer, Ended last Saturday, and PCCG changed their price back to $385 after restocking, yet last night(28th) I was on PCCG site and it was back to $299, now its back up to $385, wonder if I should hold out and see if it drops again :P

    • what the!! just refreshed site and its back to $299!!!
