QNAP TS-464-8G 4-Bay NAS $639.20 ($623.22 eBay Plus) Delivered @ Futu Online via eBay

SEOFY20SEOFY22

Looking to set up a NAS / Plex server at home and came across this deal that looks pretty good. Lowest I've seen and it's (possibly?) for the 8G RAM version instead of the 4G base. Text in the listing copies the hardware specs of the 4G version, but the title is for the 8G. Posted in good faith.

    DS923+
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175491470854
$756 with code SEOFY22 which is the best price I have seen

No hardware encoding on the Synology.

      • I think they have updated the 23+ models with a ryzen r1600 cpu, it should have hardware encoding now?

        • +2

Sorry meant transcoding, but no. No intergrated graphics on the 23+ which means you get almost nothing out of it.

  • +3

8GB variant - note that the RAM cannot be upgraded unlike 4GB variant
Had the 4GB one, wonderful NAS

    • Yes, good call out! I figure by the time I need more than 8G of RAM for my personal needs it'll be time to upgrade the entire system.

    • Yeah better off going 4gb and upgrading with cheap $50 sodimm

    • +1

Is the software to backup photos/videos, easy and good to use?

      • Was wondering this too, as much as this is a great deal, the software experience is wonderful on Synology.

Is there a Demo site or something to try on QNAP?

        • +2
          • @KiddieKid: Will do!

I have been eyeing off the DS923+, and very sad I missed out on the 575 posting the other day as I have had experience with Synology before and the software was always great for me.

            • @kuddlywuddly: DS923+ for $575? That's very low price for that model. Surprised to see that price point for Synology. I think lowest for TS-464 (4G) would be around $570-580 mark.

              • @racingmiku: I meant DS423+ sorry, also found out that QNAP photo management tool has a 9.99 USD monthly or 99 USD per year fee…..

            • +1

@kuddlywuddly: DS423+ @ $575 is back in stock at amazon

    • I got same model from ShoppingExpress last week, comes with N5105 CPU and 8g ram installed . Which surprised me was there is 2 ram slots in the device, I added another 4g ram.

I think you can update ram if you can get model with N5105 CPU.

      • +1

I have the same model with Intel CPU and originally came 4gbx2 ram. Upgraded 1x ram with 16gb (total of 20gb now) and work la great. Running a Win11 headless VM and quick enough for remote tasks.

        • You mean the model is TS-464-8G but expandable? The official website says 8 GB on board (non-expandable).

          • +1

@ouryou: Correct. This really surprised me when I found the ram can be updated. Also, the official website indicated there are 2 type of CPU with this model, N5095 and N5010, I think the device with N5095 will have solder ram on board.

        • +1

Mine comes with 1 8g ram installed.

    • @racingmiku Do you mean the QNAP TS-433-4G 4 Bay? I bought this on recent deal but I was under the impression that the RAM was not upgradeable. I th

ink 4GB is enough for most things anyway but still curious 🤔

      • +1

No, I mean QNAP TS-464-4G 4 bay. This thread is for TS-464, and there are 2 variants to this particular NAS: 4G and 8G.
The 8GB one is not expandable, however some users here mentioned different CPU N5105 that may allow it to expand beyond 8GB…
I have the 4GB one. This one is expandable. Have 16GB and running smoothly.

        • +1

ah I see, thankyou for explaining so well, I very much appreciate it :)

  • Those who are using it, any thoughts on the security front? This is the only point I read about qnap issue and suggestion is not to access via internet and change admin accounts. Can anyone please suggest if using this will be again prone to security issue?

    • +1

That's the million dollar question, isn't it… QNAP are certainly playing catch-up in their public image, and while I personally think it's worth the risk my use case is going to be local access only so I've got a little less to do.

Remember that a NAS is no substitute for a robust backup procedure, especially of critical data.

      • Thanks, I get it. Just trying to workout on my first NAS solution. Synology gives confidence like using the images/files access over the internet as people say. But with QNAP, it's not advisable, and wanted to see if anyone gained the confidence to use it outside. My primary focus is for Plex then a few datas that I have over external HDs.

        • There will be risk whichever brand you use. As long as you set the NAS correctly - custom admin account, 2-step verification, private (i.e. not publishing the NAS out there), firewall and etc, this NAS has decent security.
This NAS has more features and expandability than Synology at the same price point (mid $600).

    • I didn't even use QNAP system at all — jump directly to unraid… YMMV

      • +3

The benefit of QNAP is that it run less electricty than your unraid

        • If you are going to use your PC, might as well use JBOD instead of RAID and back everything up.
If 2 disks in your RAID5 goes down, you will lose the whole RAID.

    • +3

Disable the port redirection on your router, keep it local only. Never expose anything to the internet.
You can't get hacked if nothing is exposed.

      • +1

Thanks, Is exposing the Plex server for media access fine or we shouldn't do that as well? If that also has issues then it's a no for me since my primary use would be plex then local storage for my data.

        • In your router, do you have upnp and port forwarding ?
You will need to disable upnp and port forwarding.
If they have access to your Plex server, they can access (and corrupt/lock) all files on your network.
If they have access to your cookies, they can log into any of your accounts bypassing verification.
Your passwords, SMS verification becomes irrelevant.
If you need to expose a pc, you need to setup a DMZ zone to act as a firewall, but nothing is 100% secure (unless you block everything).

        • Just keep everything local and use VPN like wireguard to access plex, nas, etc.

I emailed Futu and they said: Thanks for the email, this one is the 8G model not able to upgrade the ram on this one.

    • +3

Thanks for doing the legwork, you rock!

  • Thanks all - ordered one although from Shopping Express - fingers crossed I get the version without the ram soldered in. If it is soldered it's not the end of the world, but it would be nice to have the option to put in more ram later down the track if I needed it. It's replacing two older Qnaps - a 4 bay and a 2 bay job - that have done a sterling job for around ten years, and they still provide security updates to the firmware which is amazing, and they still work fine, but they are stuck on QTS 4.2.6 due to the processor, and one drive just started to throw an error plus it is hard to get larger drives that will work in them. Basically it's time to upgrade. The security issues with Qnap never affected me as I never opened them up to the outside world.

Now looking at what drives to get for the new Qnap - probably Seagate Iron Wolf, ideally the Pro version for the 5 year warranty as long as the premium isn't too high. Might start with two larger drives as RAID1 and put two of my older 4TB drives in as a second mirror for backups. Later could remove the smaller drives and expand the main raid. Might also just try the larger drives in my old Qnaps to see if they work - in theory they should be able to cope with up to 16TB. FWIW At work I used to love Seagate, then hated them due to multiple failures and went to WD. With my Qnaps I have had one WDs fail, the drive throwing an error now is another WD, and the Seagates (ST4000VN008 ie 4TB IronWolfs) are all running without an issue.

So what drives are other people planning to get for their new toy? Can't find 16TB Iron Wolf Pro jobs on sale with the 22% discount on eBay (out of stock), just the standard Iron Wolf for $399 each. The 12TB Iron Wolf standard/pro are $300/$326. 18TB Pros are $545 which is too much. Maybe I'll get two 12TB to start with and wait for deals on larger drives. Amazon have them for $323 less 7% for two, so makes it just over $300 each - but from the US and a month delivery. So nah.

    • Ahhh…. 18TB Pro have dropped again and are now $453.34 less 7% so $421 each, delivery 14th of July. Hmmm… (yes, don't remind me that they were recently $280 each https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/769555)

      • …..and found that the drive in the amazon listing is a 'ST18000NEZ00' which does not exist in the Qnap compatibility list. Would almost certainly work, but if it didn't it would be a total pain. I've decided to go with three of the standard 8TB IronWolf drives - cheapest option, will provide the extra space I need for now, and may be slightly quieter than the Pros. I might also try them out first in my old NAS and if they work in that then in the future I know I could always get larger drives and move these into one of my old Qnaps.

        • +1

…and score! The enclosure from Shopping Express came with a single memory card, not soldered. I should also say, it came incredibly fast - ordered yesterday afternoon and came this afternoon. Now just waiting for the drives.

  • +1

Mine from Futu Online arrived today, it has a sticker on the top that says it's a TS-x64 and carries the N5095 processor. When I take all the bays out there's two memory slots, the lower one has memory in it which appears to be removable, however it has a sticker on it which says warranty is voided if removed. I haven't had time yet to load it up with disks and power it on to see the exact specs of the processor and memory.

When you look at the QNAP site for the device, about half way down it shows you the 2 x m.2 PCIe slots - that board looks like it has soldered RAM, but is not at all what mine looks like.

    • So maybe ram is upgradable?

    • Same sticker with mine. But if you login your ts464, go to control panel/system status, you’ll find the cpu is N5105, not N5095.

      • +1

Can confirm N5105 and 8GB. So @flashi007 Yes, I believe so.

        • That's great news @deventer. Did you order it through OP's post here? ie eBay Now I'm sad I missed out on the deal

          • +1

@mememe123: Yes I did. I may have ordered it before I read all of the subsequent discussion about the RAM configs etc because I was ok with getting the 8GB soldered version so my original post here was just to confirm what I received when I ordered it, because it contrasted with what people were saying and I'm happy to have the extra flexibility.

  • Yes ram is not soldered.
Got mine yesterday and i was surprised
    What a relief😮‍💨

    • Interesting, it looks like Qnap product manager doesn't know their products completely.

      • I think it is more due to recent chip shortages. The cheaper 4GB cards that would have been soldered to the 8G model were not available, so to fulfil orders for the 8G model they have just used the standard board with a single 8GB card. Basically the product manager does know their products, they just aren't aware of this (likely very temporary) change, and we've just been lucky enough to get those units!
