    You don't need a adapter to pair.
    Also, you can charge the 1st gen pencil directly from the host iPad (if you wanted to).

      I think they are referring to the 10th gen iPads not having a lightning port but still using the 1st gen pencil. In that case you will need to use an adapter to charge and pair.
