Free 5G Access for Existing Plans @ amaysim

220

Just got this email from amaysim:

5G has officially dropped and we’re supercharging the speed of your plan. On the house, of course.

From 3 July 2023 upon renewal, your $40 UNLIMITED 85GB plan will hit 5G warp speed on the Optus Premium Network.

Enjoy 5G at no extra cost
This means you can pull 5Gs at up to 100Mbps full throttle as you search, stream, game, chat, heart, comment and share your way to the internet finish line.

But just so you know, your maximum download speed is up to 100Mbps on this plan and typical download speeds are usually slower depending on your location, device and network conditions.

  • So my 20 dollar plan wont get 5g?

    • +5

Your $20 plan may well get 100Mbps on 4G

      Also better batterylife

    • +2

My $15 Amaysim plan got me 441Mbps on 4G on my iPhone 14 Pro - I was standing right under the tower though.

      • +2

My $9 amaysim plan got me 700mbps on 4G on a Pixel 6. Underground train station

  • +1

    up to 100Mbps

    • +6

So….the bare minimum of 5g lol

    • +1

      Its a start

      • My last 5 speedtests with amaysim have all resulted in speeds over 130mbps on 4g. So the 100mbps cap is a little odd. Guess we will find out if it is limited by Optus to amaysim users, or just a case of under promise, over deliver.

        • Jeez i never realised the 4g speeds were like that. Just did one and got 120mb/s good thing i pay $80 for my 50mb NBN lol

  • Enjoy 5G at no extra cost

OTA upgrade for my 4G handset?…

    Where's the bargain?

  • +1

I’m glad, especially as a Boost customer! Competition is good and locks this in as the new norm.

    • +2

100Mbps on 5G the new norm?

can’t think of a thing to say to make that seem more anticlimactic

  • Doesn’t apply to long expiry plans right? Shame

  • +4

…what? 100mbps on 5g? I'm on Coles mobile (also optus network) and just pulled 220Mbps on 4g. What exactly is the point?

    • +2

      Marketing.

    • What exactly is the point?

      You’re talking about Amaysim

    • You can switch between 4g /5g on your phone.

But i guess we are talking about better reception in some areas, and lower latency

      • I’d be willing to bet (though clearly I’ve no real idea) that situations where 5G reception are an advantage over 4G are still pretty uncommon.

Theoretically there are advantages in some situations and I’m willing to believe we’ll see some sign of that before too long but right now 4G has quite a few advantages, batterylife being one.

I have both 4g and 5g sim in my phone and find i have to switch to 5g for internet 30% of the time

          • @easternculture: What area?

Tho if you’re switching between sims that may be down to network no?

I definitely have an inner city bias.

            • -1

              @0jay: Sutherland .

Also in car parks when 4g no signal, i find sometime i get a signal on 5G

              • @easternculture: Right, so that’s one of the purported advantages of 5G as I understand it, ie shopping centres, stadiums and large public facilities.

I guess it’s still network dependent though, last I looked Telstra had pretty dense 5G over most of my area, Optus was near zero

    • Theoretically if uploads are 100mbps as well, then this far surpasses 4G capability.

  • Woo-hoo! As a long -time Amaysim customer, I have been waiting for 5G.
Just ran a test on my 4G handset. It was 255mbps down/50 up. Can't wait to trim 60 percent off that number!

    • 4G+ already uses carrier aggregation to get you that 255Mbps. (Without carrier aggregation 4G maxes out at 150Mbps)

Wouldn't throwing Optus 5G bands into the mix simply increase the total speed by up to 100Mbps?
That's what I'm hoping anyway as I'm already getting around 240Mbps on Amaysim with 4G+

  • It sounds a lot like the 100Mbps is not a shape.

I’ve been told that all Telstra MVNOs are hard-shaped though I get 240-370Mbps on Mate so I’ve no idea where people are getting that kind of information from or what measure of truth there is to it.

  • While we're talking about Amaysim, is anyone else unable to send/receive picture messages?

    • My partner is having this issue. She gets my picture messages but not other peoples.

  • +1

I’ve been getting 150mb+ speed on a 6 month amaysim 4G plan anyway. 5G is a bit of a scam

  • i got a email it not capped at 100 mbps it is capped at 150 mbps same thing as optus capping in july as well so dont blame amaysim, that basically the same cap as telstra.

    • i know we all been getting more on 4G but 150 mbps gonna be heaps cause better ping and better loaded and better upload which is more stable than optus 4G

    • I don't understand why they would be capping 4G as well. If there was 5G access which was capped at 100mbps, but 4G was not speed capped that would be awesome

      • Yeah I agree it pretty annoying.

  • Not worried about getting 5G, but some of the plans on sale are good at the moment if you include cashback.

  • Good start, now enable one number thing for smart watches too.

  • Great, Uplink on optus 5G is much better at my house compared to 4G

  • Got the email

    I'm on the $10 for 10Gb

Just using as back up currently.

Looks like most companies are switching to 5G now.

    • I managed to reach 1.4gbps but now I am capped.
