Get Your Home Ready for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
The growing number of connected personal and IoT devices has led to an overall increase in network density that is pushing the limits of the current Wi-Fi standard. The latest 802.11ax standard provides future-proof technologies, higher network efficiency, faster Wi-Fi speeds, greater coverage and improved battery life for connected devices, providing a significantly better networking experience for users.
*It requires 802.11ax-compatible devices to enjoy the benefits brought by 802.11ax Wi-Fi standard.

Next-Gen Wi-Fi Speed
RT-AX58U is a 2x2 dual-band Wi-Fi router that provides 160MHz bandwidth and 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections. With a total networking speed of about 3000Mbps — 574Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 2402Mbps on the 5GHz band — RT-AX58U is 2.5X faster than 802.11ac 2x2 dual-band routers.

Built for Multi-device Households
With a revolutionary combination of OFDMA and MU-MIMO technology, 802.11ax technology provides up to 4X greater network capacity and efficiency in traffic-dense environments. Previous-generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi can only handle one device at a time on each network channel, which is an inefficient use of available bandwidth. OFDMA support in the 802.11ax Wi-Fi standard divides each channel into small sub-channels, allowing signals from multiple devices* to be bundled together and transmitted simultaneously, reducing latency for a smoother, more responsive Wi-Fi experience.

The Latest WPA3 Network Security
The next generation of Wi-Fi security, bringing new capabilities to enhance Wi-Fi protections in personal and enterprise networks. Building on the widespread adoption of WPA2 over more than a decade, WPA3 adds new features to simplify Wi-Fi security, enable more robust authentication, and deliver increased cryptographic strength for highly sensitive data markets.

BTW Forget about calling Officeworks over the phone to do a price beat, even if the site says $299, in their system it's already $149. I've called a store and is not in stock anywhere but you could still go to the store to place an order assuming their system still says $299. I called my local store after calling OW over the phone and the store's price on it was still $299 - for how long not sure.

    • It’s oos anyway

    • AX54HP is dual core whereas AX55 and onwards are quad core processor. Also AX54 doens't have Asus AI enhancement services. According to Asus site when you compare routers.

  • Will this work with Google Nest Wifi (WiFi 5) already in a mesh system, if they're all set with DHCP clients of this router?

    • No the Asus replaces your Nest Wi-Fi.

  • Wonder how long this deal is for. bday perks in July

    • Create another account with another email, you'll get a welcome $10 voucher.

  • Hey all I have a really weird problem with my Asus RT-3100.

All of a sudden i couldn't register a new device on the wifi. So i switch it off and then after switching ot back on, everybody has a limited timeframe to connect and if that window is missed, then they cant connect and the router has to be switched off again. So once after turning it on I raced around and connected all 30 devices - then a couple of days later one of those devices lost connection and then couldnt connect unless I switched the router off. Unit is now around 2 yrs old.

This was a replacement router for Rt-ac68u which for some reason, would only put out a wifi signal for a few hours after a reset and then drop it.

    My questions are

1 - does anyone know what is wrong with the Ac3100 and if it is fixable?

2 - are asus routers inherently unreliable?

I have updated firmware on both and it hasnt fixed the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

    • +1

Sounds like the router is not getting enough power and therefore is not working properly. To fix this, make sure the router is not sharing power with other devices on the powerboard etc. Report back if this solves your problem

      • Thanks for responding - I'll try that. The weird thing is that all the lights are still flashing as normal on the router when it drops out.

        • Lights are on but nobody is home unfortunately.

    • I have two RT-AC68Us. One as a router/AP and one just as an AP. I’ve had them for six years and haven’t had an issue. I’d say they’re reliable.

Sorry, I don’t know what your problem is. You might get some help over at Whirlpool https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/82

2 - are asus routers inherently unreliable?

I can answer this one, with a 'no'.

Asus routers have been some of the more reliable for me over the years.

Can't help with the other questions though.

    • Asus routers are usually reliable. Have you done a factory reset?

  • ASUS might be bringing out new models. There are several routers that have had a large price drop across multiple vendors. It's hard to see that as coincidence.

  • I have an Asus rt-ac65u and find that the signal is very weak at the back of the house. Sometimes struggling to get a single bar. Would this router be better?

How easy is it to flash to address vulnerability?

    • +1

I think it’s pretty easy. You just login into the router dashboard through your browser local host, and look through settings for a firmware update, and click on it.

    • +1

Wi-Fi on the RT-AX58U will be better. You may need two of them regardless. You can set two of them up in a mesh Wi-Fi or connect the Asus routers to each other using ethernet backhaul.

  • Does this model support an inbuilt VPN server?

    • Just checked the WebUI on mine.
It's got a "VPN" tab which seems to let you set it up as a VPN server supporting OpenVPN, WireGuard, IPSEC or PPTP.

    • VPN
      VPN Client L2TP
      VPN Client OVPN
      VPN Client PPTP
      VPN Server IPSec
      VPN Server OVPN
      VPN Server PPTP

      After you update the firmware there is also;

      VPN Client WireGuard
      VPN Server WireGuard
      VPN Fusion

      • Which one to use?

        • Depends what VPN company you use and what you are using the VPN for.

  • My main reasons for upgrading my router is to get slightly better coverage in my home. I have fttp and am on a 50/25 non plan and speed has never been an issue. We connect around 15 devices wireless with a couple of consoles and the tv plugged directly in to the router

My question: will I notice any difference between this and the RT-AX54HP which is currently on sale for about $85.

    Thanks

    • +1

I think you'd notice due to the greater SoC specs on this one.

  • Tempted by this coming from a ac68u.

Does anyone have input on the rt-ax56u vs this?

Only diff I see is ax3000 and CPU cores

Amazon have the rt-ax56u for $148 ATM.

  • No stock nearby. Order one for delivery. Need to wait until 21 July.

  • Thanks OP, didn't actually grab one of these (already have one) but did spot that they have 2 other ASUS routers on sale and grabbed an AX82U and AX54HP to make Aimesh network.

    • +1

That sounds like a good strategy actually …. might just get the cheaper AX54HP and turn it into a mesh node down the track if the need arises.

FWIW, I bought an RT-N66U second hand and it gave me 11 good years… great reliability and the signal strength leaves my crappy tp-link modem router for dead.

Seems like JB have cleared all stock and even removed the page for it:

Oops! We can't find the page you're looking for.
Check the URL or search for your favourite products or brand above.

    • Found one in the wild at JB hifi today but they wouldn't honour the sale price, pity.

  • +3

Even this is sold out now but I am still wondering if the Asus RT-AX82U worth the $100 premium over this Asus RT-AX58U.

  • Bummer. Was about to get this but JBHiFi no longer has it on their site and it says OOS at OfficeWorks.
