[NSW] Red Energy - Fixed Electricity Rates until 1-Jan-24

930

NSW Electricity Prices are rising from 1-Jul-23

And you've likely already seen your rate increases;
Sumo has increased my daily rate from 88c to 115.5 & kw/h from 25.85 to 40.150

Most retailers haven't advertised their rates yet so you can't compare on https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/ until after the 1st of July.

A discussion on Whirlpool has highlighted what is likely one of the best rates is Red Energy's Red Fixed Saver which offers to lock in their current rates until until 1-Jan-24, for me it will be;
Service to Property
111.100 c/day
Anytime
28.050 c/kWh

Keep in mind this may differ based on your location and distributor.

  • +2

Do compare with Tango. Tango lock freeze is till May 2024.

    • +9

      Available on Victorian plans only

      • +3

Isn't the tango rate lock BS?

^Daily supply and usage rates are fixed until at least 31st May 2024 provided the network tariff doesn't change. Excludes feed-in tariffs, demand and other charges.

        • +3

I queried this point with Tango and was told it refers to covering Tango should distributors change the tariff to some other structure and does not refer to customer supply and usage charges they are fixed until 31st May. See what happens 1st Aug ..

    • Thanks. Made the switch

  • +5

Good deal, too bad I'm waiting for Origin's reward points and $150.

    • +1

Origin just sent me a 1k electricity bill, stay away from them trust me.

      • That's quarterly right?

      • +2

Did you actually use a lot of electricity or did they bump your rates up without telling you?

        • There is no way I used what they claim , they claim I used 50% more than last year complete bs. It’s just me my mrs and two kids.

          • @Believ3r: Wow same here - my usage went up 50% despite me going on holidays for 3 weeks during the quarter. Glad to know it's not just me, don't know how to dispute it though since the meter reading is accurate.. :(

          • +1

@Believ3r: Probably couldn't access your meter and just an overpriced estimate. Happened to me before.

      • +1

How much electricity did you use?
I’m with origin and the app gives me my daily electricity usage.
The new prices still are cheaper than some of the deals posted here.

      • +1

There was an article in the Fin Review this week, Origin, Energy Australia, and AGL are all looking to up their prices to attract international investors ahead of large scale Green Energy projects.

        https://www.afr.com/companies/energy/higher-power-bills-mean…

    • Is Origin still the one to go? I'm in Sydney, with AGL and have the added senior, and referral VIP discount.

  • is there a forum page for Victoria ?

    • you could prob do a search through this https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/143

    • +1

Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but a couple of people have highlighted that the best deal for Victoria right now is probably Tango - about 20.++ cents/kWh and one of the few retailers that are freezing their rates till May 2024.

      • I see ; that's for a single rate i believe
Always seem to get put back on time of use rates which are worse off compared to my rates with Lumo
        Peak - 29.205 cents
        off peak - 16.17 cents

        • Yeah that seems better as long as they don't jack it up on 1st Aug

    • You should look into https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/

I made a quick excel with daily + peak + off peak with normal usage of my previous bill and compared the top offers that way apples to apples.

  • +5

Of course check local rates for you but nectr are doing 12 month lock-in. May be worth a slightly higher rate than red to lock in for longer.

    • +1

Except if you have solar export. they've terrible

    • +4

I think they have dropped the fixed plan for most people now… no longer available for me in Sydney.

      • Aw that sucks

  • Agree with the good points about Red's rates.
My power with the current supplier (NSW) was going from 26c/unit to 38c/unit. Yeah nah.
I've just been through the process with Red, starting with an online application. I think I'm now a customer.
Got 2 rejection emails and 2 acceptance calls over 2 days??!!
It took a loooooong time over a series of calls - the last one was an hour.

I'm currently with Powershop in NSW and even with them increasing rates and lowering the feed in tariff, I'm still $10 better off per month than moving to this Red Energy fixed plan. I'm thinking the Origin deal may be the way to go, temporarily..

    • Red Energy has a 10% pay on time discount. Does Powershop has an equivalent?

      • I'm with RED (last 12 months) and there is 0% pay on time discounts on their plans back then and even now. Where are you seeing this on any of their plans?

        • curious about this too

        • I've been with them for more than 5 years now…. have always have that 10% pay on time discount.

          • +1

@JaxSantiago: The pay on time discount is a bit misleading. Their older plans had it, but then it was replaced with plans that gave you the same rate without it, so the discount wasn't really a discount.

            • @DoubleWookie: I see. Thanks. Didn't know. Haven't tried switching providers so no idea if I'm getting the best deal/rate

          • @JaxSantiago: Dont move house.

    • +1

What do powershops new pricing look like?

      • +1

        Endeavour nsw my rates
        Old
        Supply $0.925
        Anytime $0.2787
        Fit $0.13

        New
        Supply $1.2025
        Anytime $0.3631
        Fit $0.12

Change in my annual bill from $400 to $1100

        • +1

I am poor at math but can you help me understand how a 30% increase in rate resulted in an almost 300% increase annual bill? Not trolling, want to see impact to me too

      • +2

I'm on Ausgrid, just received the powershop new pricing. They don't offer anytime on Ausgrid, just time of use. New rates:

        supply 120.81
        offpeak 27.50
        shoulder 32.89
        peak 64.90
        FiT 12c

Gotta love all the prices getting jacked up simultaneously to the FiT dropping. Make that make sense.
I'm swtiching to Red Fixed now.

        • +1

Don't forget referral link to get extra $25 :-)

  • +2

Great prompt to check my rate increase which came through in an email you needed to go to six pages, log in, click some drop downs etc to find.

Powershop going from 38c to 61c peak use (rural). That’s absolutely insane. Shame because their 13c solar feed in was amazing during summer.

    • Yes I'm in the same boat W powershop..think I might move to single rate always 38kwh but the daily use is ridiculous @ 1.98… think it's something like that..

  • +4

Nectr has 12 months lock on even better rates (NSW at least)

    • Don't forget to use the ozbargain random referral link for Nectr for $50 credit too if you find the Nectr plan works for you.

    • +7

Nectr dropped a few of their plans overnight. Their offerings they now offer aren’t great in comparison. But can vary depending on your location.

      • +2

I looked it up and the price is 50% higher than the fixed rate I got a month ago. It's insane at the moment, and I'm glad I had the sense to not delay this.

    • +4

Nectr dropped 2 (of 3) of their plans for NSW Customers on Ausgrid about 3 nights ago.

  • Origin:
    Service to Property
    96.09 c/day
    Anytime
    19.28 c/kWh

    • +5

probably the old rate and not new after 1st july.

      • +10

its rediculous none of these companies are listing their july rates on their sites, very dishonest marketing

        • +3

They can't publish them because they would be in breach of exceeding the current DMO requirements. The new DMO takes effect from 1 July.

        • EnergyLocals does publish their new rate

  • What about gas rates? (Are they going up too)

    • +3

      yes they will again

they've have increased gas prices throughout the year.
I've used the same gas usage same time last year and my bill has tripled!

its very strange, Australia has their own natural gas but they sold it all offshore, and now buying it back at a higher price?
and we the consumers are copping it.

    • Looks like my gas rates went up last time on Feb 1.

So I suspect they might increase around that time next year, and are not increasing on July 1?

    • +1

Yep. Dodo advised me both were going up.

      Electricity - 25%
      Gas - 35%

      Fun times.

    • +1

I left Red Energy last month due Powershop’s better solar FIT, Gas account transfer still pending I got the Gas rates increase email last week

      • Yes but now PS have lowers fit by 1c pkwh and jacked up everything else…

        • you are right, but PS Gas rates increased less than Red rates, FIT is 12c compared to 7c Red. Overall, PS is still a better option if you have solar

          • @GregFiona: According to my calculation, Red is better, at least during Winter time.

            • +1

@teddy3000: My plan change was recommended by Solar Analytics. Got solar 3 months ago and with a >10kwh system I benefit more with the almost double Powershop FIT compared to Red

  • Qantas Red Saver seems to be cheaper rates by ~10% but i guess thats before the rate increase

    • +2

Website won’t list new rates yet (unless you’re currently on the plan you should receive the new rates shortly via email).

      • +1

I'm on the Qantas plan and have received this email and my new rates (NSW) are:

        New Rates
From 1 July 2023 (GST free price, GST incl. price)

        Service to Property 110.000 c/day 121.000 c/day
        Peak 24.800 c/kWh 27.280 c/kWh
        Shoulder 24.800 c/kWh 27.280 c/kWh
        Off Peak 24.800 c/kWh 27.280 c/kWh
        Demand Summer 26.270 c/kW/day 28.897 c/kW/day
        Demand Temperate Peak 15.530 c/kW/day 17.083 c/kW/day
        Demand Non Summer 26.270 c/kW/day 28.897 c/kW/day

        • Very hard to predict what the demand charge will be

  • +1

If only I lived in an area without a supplier monopoly…

    • +1

      Western Australia?

      • SE QLD, but close enough

I nearly paid $400 for last month's bill, and that's before the price rise…

  • -8

This is a horrible rate , where do you live ? In SA ?

    • +2

      SA much worse

    • +1

      Says NSW in the title

    • +3

Please do present a better option

      • -2

oh wow, so many negs that cant do a simple net search - here
        https://energylocals.com.au/

        your welcome

        • This is what I got from Energy Locals

Online Member - Limited Time Offer
Membership fee $16.49/month (Free membership for the first 6 months for new sign-up)
          Daily supply 57c/day
          Anytime 33.5c/kWh

          • I ran some numbers and if we add the membership fee (~54c/day) with the daily supply charge, we end up with 111c/day, which is more or less the same with Red Energy.
          • If we only look at 6 months timeframe, I found out your total bill would be the same for average daily usage of 10 kWh. Anything beyond 10 kWh/day, you better off with Red Energy
          • Hard to predict beyond 6 months as the rates will likely to change but provided neither change their pricing, Red Energy is definitely better

TL;DR Energy Locals is slightly better than Red Energy only for the first 6 months if you use less than 10 kWh/day

          • @foxes28: Energy locals have an energy demand tariff / demand charges.

This is 29c / kw / day for me in peak season, so if you use 5kw peak, it is an extra $1.50 per day.

Even with better rates of energy locals 25.5c vs 28c at red energy, the demand charges kill the deal.

The membership fee and supply charge will be an extra 50c and 72c per day respectively.

  • Do your research for your area. The daily rate of 121 is too expensive for me.

  • I had an amazing agl (old flora plan with an old provider which agl bought and kept the plan) 24.937000
    13.6 controlled load
    13.607000

    Feed-in tariff
    c/kWh
    11.00000
    Supply charge
    75.790000

    New
    35.783000

    Controlled load
    20.438000

    Supply 91.498000

I will need to wait and see as 11c feed is pretty good. July is around the corner, so we can hopefully get real prices soon.

    • I am on the same plan. I was shocked by the 40% increase but unfortunately this may still be the best deal :(

      • Oh wow, let’s wait and see. Hopefully we can find something better.

        • I am also on this plan. Pls share if you find anything better.

          • @cybermonday: Hi @cybermonday looks like ovo solar it’s better (at least for me).

The only thing that is more expensive is the daily charge (compared to new agl). However they pay 0.14 for the first 4K you export a year and then it’s 0.07. I produce about 5k so I’ll be making a little better off with an extra $80 a year from exporting. Cheaper rates overall but about an extra 0.40 daily (but exporting my solar will offset a bit that and overall I should save at least $200)

They also have $100 off promotion at the moment.

            Peak (¢/kWh):
            29.568
            Shoulder (¢/kWh):
            29.568
            Off Peak (¢/kWh):
            29.568
            High Season Demand (c/kW/day ) 28.893
            Low Season Demand (c/kW/day ) 17.073
            CL1 unit rate (¢/kWh):
            18.348
            Supply charge (c/day):
            129.36
            High Solar feed-in tariff (C/kWh):
            First 4000kWh per year 0.14
            Remaining solar export
            7

          • @cybermonday: Based on My historical usage the only better plan I could find was "Ovo the one" plan which was about $80 year cheaper. I am gambling that solar feed in will be increased due to el nino so will stay with AGL. Wish me luck :)

    • Red fixed rate plan is better.

  • If you don't have solar panels, do these rate increases mean electric cars are now more expensive?

Here's a video from a few months back comparing an electric vs petrol car for a Melb to Sydney trip:
    https://youtu.be/ep1-yVU7Wzg?t=809

    • +7

Electric cars are about 5 to 1 ahead of petrol in terms of cost per km driven. 100km is roughly 20kWh which, at 20c/kWh offpeak without solar, would be $4. Petrol would be averaging 10L/100km at $1.90/L, giving $19 for the same distance.

      • -1

        LPG 12L/100km @ $0.90/L ~$11

        $12k commodore vs $40k tesla 3 used

i'd have to drive 400,000 km to make up the $28k difference.

        • A 20-year-old LPG s#!tbox is not even in the same price range, nor feature set as a modern EV - let alone maintenance requirements.

At least pretend to make a fair comparison.

  • Can I change to this saver plan if I'm already with Red?

    • +1

Available for new customers, and existing customers who are moving home or adding a new property

    • +1

I’m existing red - Earlier in June I called red and the lady was happy to move me on this plan along with $50 credit - she also told me all fixed plans maturing in May ( like mine) have been extended till 30th June - so I didn’t change at that time - I’ll call them again today

  • Locked in with Nectr last month for 12 months. Received better rates then that - not sure if they're still low.

    • This is what I got from Nectr:

      All Day Usage
      c/kWh
      36.95
      Supply Charge
      c/day
      144.32

    • Just signed up to Nectr. 100c daily, 25c flat rate. Seems pretty good somehow? Alinta wanted to jack me to 37c flat and 95c daily.

      • Nectr seems hit n miss with their address search. Next door neighbour got charged same rate as foxes, but mine is same rate as mogley.

      • What's the solar feed in rate?

  • I checked the price. Not as cheap as energy locals (electricity) and Globird (gas) which I am current with.

    • In wonder when globird will increase their rates..

    • +3

Globird are increasing their rates by about 30% on Jul 1
