[NSW] Red Energy - Fixed Electricity Rates until 1-Jan-24

930

NSW Electricity Prices are rising from 1-Jul-23

And you've likely already seen your rate increases;
Sumo has increased my daily rate from 88c to 115.5 & kw/h from 25.85 to 40.150

Most retailers haven't advertised their rates yet so you can't compare on https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/ until after the 1st of July.

A discussion on Whirlpool has highlighted what is likely one of the best rates is Red Energy's Red Fixed Saver which offers to lock in their current rates until until 1-Jan-24, for me it will be;
Service to Property
111.100 c/day
Anytime
28.050 c/kWh

      • Yep which is why I am looking at this deal.

        • Actually when I compared them, it looks like the Red offer is not much better than Globird's rates after the raise… their per Kj rate is lower but supply charge is higher, for us it comes out about the same

  • Who would downvote this???
I just got hit by AGL from 22c to 40c per kw/h and 111 per day for the supply charges.
Been doing a heavy research into good prices but it's all going to 39-40+c after 1st of July with smaller providers as well, so HUGE thanks for posting this!

  • Are we sure they can't raise the rate in July? In some of the other posts on ozbargain people were saying that there is a clause in most electricity contacts saying they can increase the price if the supplier also increases the price.

  • We just got our letter from Red today that ours is going from 38c to 49c peak (regional NSW)

  • +2

Most likely a stupid question but would appreciate if someone can answer. I just signed up with Red. Do I need to inform my current provider (AGL) or does that take care of between AGL and Red? Been on hold with AGL for 30 minutes so far.

    • I'm having the same question. But also additional question as well.

If we change electric provider from AGL to Red energy but still in the same house will we still be charged the disconnect & new connection fee?

I assume not as that's only for moving to new house ?

    • +2

No, you don't need to do anything. You'll be issued a last bill at some point and they may call you and try and retain you.

    • +1

Nope its automatic, but it does have a coolijg off period of 10 business days, which usually means at least 2 weeks.

Then ime it commonly doesnt seem to take effect until the next meter read date so if you've just had a bill it could be 3months before the switch

      • +1

Recently moved from Energy Australia to Nectr and they moved our account before the next meter reading based on estimated reading.

  • Red has been slow at increasing the rates (which is good), and last year they increased in Sept if I can remember correctly, so until around Sept you might be paying more if you go fixed rate. For me origin f&f deal was slightly cheaper even after considering the price change in July.

  • Is changing providers i.e. from Dodo to Red Energy without moving out considered a "disconnection"? And will i be charged a disconnection fee for changing?

    • No

  • +4

    Essential Energy 177.1c/day + 31.13c/kWh

    I'm out.

    • Yep… Read my comment below. Essential energy are thieves. They have a monopoly and literally charge double supply rate and peak rate of urban residents.

    • But where is your better deal? I don't think there is one. I am in the same boat with Essential and GloBird is about to up the price to $1.6280c/day and $0.4180 Step 1: 0.00-30.00 kWh/Day then $0.4565 for the balance.

      • Essential is expensive.

There isn't unless you were lucky enough to be an existing nectr customer and get something like this with their hive saver plan starting July 1st (12 month fixed rate)

        Anytime use.

General usage charge cents per kWh 28.050
Supply charge - General Usage cents per day 147.400

    • +1

      Sweet Jesus.

$654 per year even without turning on a light.

      • Correct :-(

      • $654 per year even without turning on a light.

or $654 for the privilege of being able to turn on a light ;)
but yes, EE's supply charges are getting insane

      • +1

In a nation that exports huge amounts of coal, and has nuclear deposits.
The Government hates us, and I guess as citizens we get the Government we deserve
Meanwhile, raised energy prices tipped powerhouse Germany into recession and sent businesses offshore
And they want us all in pure electric vehicles?
You don't see the Chinese or Indians doing anything that would increase the cost of energy

      • Do you have a fridge? An old fridge uses a lot of energy.

  • prices very dependant on where you are, but from past years usage still cheaper than current powershop increase

Ausgrid TOU area has these rates for me
    Daily Supply - 111.1
    Peak - 45.1
    Shoulder - 28.05
    Off Peak - 17.38
    FIT-7

    (Powershop is going to
    Daily Suppl - 108.47
    Peak - 68.08
    Shoulder - 36.81
    Off Peak - 28.61
    FIT-12
    )

already on TOU with solar FIT so last time i enquired, moving to single rate was never going to happen/get approved, so stuck on TOU which isnt that bad most times as we load shift a lot of our stuff to offpeak overnight, but definitely hurts when A/C running at 5pm when we get home :) )

  • +3

Laughs in WA and not having privatised essential services. 30c/unit is fine by me

    • +1

      0.30c is expensive.

      • -2

It's less than 40c a unit and I don't have to (profanity) around chasing new "deals" every year but you do you boo 😘

        • But, but, but, free market is better!

          😢

  • North Coast NSW Essential Energy Monopoly prices

Red Energy sent me an email wanting to increase my rates to this:
    Service to Property 220.000 c/day
    Peak Peak 44.440 c/kWh 48.884 c/kWh
    Shoulder 37.884 c/kWh
    Off Peak 28.116 c/kWh
    Export 1 -7.000 c/kWh

Absolutely ridiculous. I changed the post code to an urban postcode and literally half the price. How is it legal to charge whatever you want as an electricity provider and charge double to regional / rural residents? Surely electricity is a utility we all need equal access to? Schools, hospitals road tax, mobile phone, internet. Why is it ok to charge double for regional access?

    • If with RED Energy: Check their current June 23 rates for your area. Call them and ask for a better rate than the proposed Jul01 Increase. Chances are they will agree to set the existing Jun one to be your new July01 rate if that makes sense.

      My Example
      ………………………… Peak….Shoulder….Off Peak….SAC
      My current to 30Jun…..| $0.3861 $0.2057 $0.1386 $08508
      July 01 Increase (+47%).| $0.4800 $0.3300 $0.2200 $1.2100
      Agreed to Jun23 Rate (+19%) | $0.4125 $0.2748 $0.1648 $0.9760

A 19% increase is better than the proposed +47% email notification!
Ultimately, we won't know the shape of things until after 01 Jul to see how prices unravel Can always change after that if better offers show up.

      • Put the postcode 2454 then your own…. watch the difference.

        • 2454 represent! Can I please ask what's the best deal you have found for this area?

    • So if you weren't already with Red Energy and you signed up to this deal it would have been cheaper until 1-Jan-24?

      • Not sure…………….you could call them and say you are thinking about moving to them and if so can they lock it in as Jul01 rate.

    • Is your current the same as the quoted one on their website?

      service 163c, peak 34, shoulder 30.6 off 21.9?

also North Coast NSW, my AGL is going to:

      Peak: 50.006000
      Shoulder: 48.323000
      Off peak: 32.043000
      Feed-in tariff 5.00000
      Supply charge: 191.829000

      cheaper supply, but crazy peak/shoulder

Beware - Problem with Red if you are a current customer, if you fix it now they will back dated it to the beginning of your current bill cycle.

    • Good point and true. Not usually a problem for most who have a "Call Home" smart meter and are billed monthly, but if (like myself) my reading is every 90 days and last read was 28th May, the new rate would back date to all energy from 29th May.

  • I'm in NSW with origin. My new price from 1/7/23 is 92.906c/day, 35.673 cents per kWh.

  • +1

In NSW Endeavour supplier. AGL incresing our general usage rate 40% and controlled load 50%. Bloody insane. 20 years of failed energy policy and neglect not made any better by the new renewables policies. Absolutely outrageous the situation. Guess its time to bite the bullet and cover the roof in solar.

  • I have a controlled load 2 for hot water, when i search my postcode on red energy and select the supplier it only shows fixed rate and time of usage. Nothing with controlled load. Anyone know why?

  • Just moved to origin this week, forgot that rates will change July 1
    I am in Regional VIC

    My current origin rates:
    108.75c per day
    19.37c per kWH

Proposed 12 months Nectr rates: (Nectr 100% clean plan)
    125.52c per day
    22.35c per kWh

Do you think these new rates will be lower than the cheapest plan after July 1 price rises? If they aren't I assume even though its a 12 month contract you can still leave anytime and no fees? It says no exit fee

    • These 12 contract plans are a bit meaningless. Unless they explicitly state they wont increase price until x period (i.e. LOCKED IN) then it will actually increase come July 1 and whenever supplier increases occur.

      • ….not too many 12 month fixed rate contracts these days unfortunately.

      • It does say "Energy rates fixed for 12-month period"

        • I wouldn’t lock myself in for a year with any supplier these days but will happily accept a 12 month fixed rate if decent. This way one can move if prices are better down the line.

        • I'd suggest calling them or look for hidden detail. I had this exact situation with Origin last year and had to move to AGL during the last supplier change as a result of my 12 month origin plan rates changing to be more expensive than the new AGL plan on the market.

  • How can we see what rates will be from 1 July? I can't see it on any website with less than 1 week to go.

    • You can't. Prices are only released after 01 July.

      • But then aren't company switches only performed quarterly so by then it would be too late?

        • not sure what you are asking but one can switch anytime one likes u less under a contract. Retailers don't like changing price often so usually done perhaps every six months. It really comes down to how volatile the Wholesale prices are.

      • +1

        Some do like EnergyLocals

  • Thanks with Sumo. Ausgrid network and prices were ridiculous

  • A mafia ran syndicate.

  • Do not be loyal to any of these dog electricity companies, shop around and get the best possible price you can. Just my opinion

  • I just swapped providers and they slapped me a 1k+ gas bill based on an "estimate".
Can i contest it? I don't have the funds to pay off the bill now, hoping i will be in credit when they actually read the meter.

    • +1

Can you read your actual meter to see if you're actually below the estimate? If so, your next bill will be lower but unless you paid for an additional reading at the time of the switch over, it's unlikely to change the amount of the final bill from your previous supplier.

You can call them to work out a financial hardship payment plan but it might affect your credit rating.

  • Whats the difference between single rate and time of use? Is this a choice (either chose one or the other)? Are both eligible for the 12 month lock in?

    • +1

Single rate: Same rate regardless of time of day
TOU: Different rates apply depending on time of day

You'll need a smart meter (that can track usage and time) to go on a TOU plan. Depending on your usage pattern, TOU might or might not work out to be cheaper than single rates.

      • Thank you for clarifying!. With the TOU, will a meter reading and bill be provided from the old provider immediately after switching or is this done in line with the usual quarterly billing pattern? Wholesaler is Ausgrid.

        • I’m with Ausgrid and the bill from previous provider (origin) came 6 months after I had moved to red last year

        • -2

When switched, the new provider takes over all of your current billing period including the days prior to switching. In turn you would not receive any further bills from existing.
The other possible scenario is that the new provider takes over on your next billing cycle but that would only be if you were due a read very shortly.

With that in mind, the new providors rates would apply to the whole bill and not the day you sign up.

          • @Borg: Not true.

            1. We were moved from EA to Nectr after we signed up to Nectr but before the next meter reading.

            2. Some energy resellers allow you to choose whether to switch asap or at next meter reading (or at least they use to) - which is why we're surprised when we're switched 1 week or so before the next meter reading based on an estimate reading.

            • @Love a bargain: I suspect this is an option for when one has a "Smart Meter" that calls home daily and uploads the Data. My meter is semi smart but doesn't have a SIM so a read has to be taken manually every 90 days. In turn when switching provider, they will take over my current "whole" billing period. I should have noted this in my earlier comment i.e. might depend on one's meter and whether data is available live.

              • @Borg: No. We've a dumb meter hence the unexpected mid-period switch-over was done based on an estimated reading. We made sure we signed up to our new provider a few weeks before the next meter reading period and was surprised when this happened.

                • @Love a bargain: Late reply as only spotted yours.
Wow, now that is news indeed. I have switched a few times over the years, Energy Austraila, Globird, Red etc and on each occasion they took over the whole billing period and was invoiced at next due date regardless if being mid 90 day cycle.

Good to know and will ensure I check with next supplier prior to switching as I refuse to pay estimate bills. If they want to bill, they come and take a read, otherwise they can wait until next read date :-)

                  • @Borg: We're not too bothered with that as the start date was still after the day we signed up.

But yea, in most of my previous switches, I've been given the option to select whether to switch asap or wait until the next meter reading date. Wonder if that's still a thing.

Thanks for sumo increasing my current electricity daily supply rate from 82.5 to 104.5(26.7% increase) and usage rate from 25.3 to 39.27 (55.2% increase) to 71.5 to 96.8 (35.4% increase) and gas daily supply rate from 71.5 to 96.8 (35.3% increase) and usage rate from 3.014 to 4.18 (38.68% increase).

My landlord has attempted to increase my rent from 660 to 820 (24% increase).

Life is becoming more and more promising.

    • I read some review where some people called sumo customer service and they get better rates, you can try that

I signed up to red energy yesterday online and I just got the email today with the pricing rates today. With my current electricity company (origin on essential energy) I am on just 1 general usage charge and controlled load 1 (no peak/offpeak). With the rates I received today from red energy they mention off peak/ peak prices, is this normal for them to change my current plan with origin to off peak/peak?

    • fixed rate plan?

      • This is the email I received from red energy after signing up online-

Is it possible for red energy to change me over from my current plan with origin (no peak/offpeak) to a peak/offpeak plan?

        • my mail came, im in time of use but due to my meter all my time of use is the same. Better call and see if you can get flat rate

  • how do i sign up using cashback through Econnex?
I don't see the red energy's fixed rates in that comparison.

edit: Cashreward/Econnex lists the current rates. Signed up using ozbargain's referral link

    • where did you get the referral link?

      • right below OP's post you see REFERRAL LINKS with grey background.

  • if you sign up before 1/7, will the current rate stay? or it will be increasing?

    • rates stay only if you signed up to fixed rate plan. but again they have term and condition that saying you need to sign up before specific date for the fixed rates to take effect

  • +1

The stupid RBA still don’t understand the inflation is more because of the sky rocket energy costs rather than overprinted cash notes. It doesn’t matter how much red you hike. As long as energy is soaring up everything downstream will have two raise their price tags.
While Australia is exporting energy to China, now the Chinese electricity costs is about one third or maybe one fourth of Australian’s. Go figure.

  • Is it best to wait until next week to see what the new rates are and choose which is the best value? I can't seem to find many rates, and the rates we can see (other than fixed), will they just change next week so changing now is pointless? Please clarify, thanks

    • Rates will be going up that's for certain. Can be 20-25%. Depends if you think this fixed rate cost works out better than what your increased rate will be. You should be getting (if not already) your revised rates from your provider shortly.

  • When I sign up with referral number (from ozBargain) over the phone, they said I needed the first name of the person for that referral number, does anyone asked the same question?
Am not sure if there anyone willing the give me to first name for this tho.

    • Dumb question but are you able to use the web? It doesn't ask for that.

      • The reason I sign up over the phone is they giving me an additional $ credit for electricity and gas, which is not given when you sign up over the web.

        • Hmm, how much extra credit did they give?

        • Can you tell me how much credit you got via phone? Thanks!

    • Just shoot a PM to the person who referred you. I would not have any issues giving my first name.

Web App = Agree. It doesn't ask this nor should the person completing the APP via Phone

  • Alinta Energy prior 1 July rates 0.72105 daily supply and 0.26455 kWh vs. RedEnergy 1.111/day, 0.28050kWh.
my red energy transfer is complete this morning however billing starts from my most recent meter reading back in April 2023.
This means that I'll be paying 0.2805 cents extra for my daily supply for the past 67 days (about $26 total).

    • this was highlighted by Nikko here

    • That didn't happen to me. My transfer to red energy completed a couple of days ago and I just got my final bill from origin today. My meter wasn't due to be read for another week or so. I was billed by origin for the whole period not red energy.

  • Anyone who signed up to this deal try and get them to beat the new prices from Globird from this deal? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/786615
