SunRice 2x 125g Microwave Rice Cups $1 @ The Reject Shop

720

These are normally $3 at Coles/Woolworths, or $2 for the generic brand. I find these handy to have in as a top up for leftovers, travel, or to use with takeaway when cooking rice is time or equipment prohibitive. Jasmine, Brown +- purple rice, ancient grains available. Check in store for availability.

    Love these.
It says 40-60 seconds but I usually heat them for 2 and a half minutes in the microwave

    • I thought I was the only one who did that lol. Maybe its my microwave but 40 seconds is nowhere near enough, the rice texture feels like its undercooked.

      • +9

        inflation even hitting the microwaves…

    • -1

The rice is already cooked, all you need to do it heat it to your preferred temperature.

Any more and you are destroying vitamins and goodness, to some extent.

      • +1

Microwaving food is less likely to destroy nutrients than other forms of cooking which take longer

I don't remember seeing "goodness" on any of the nutritional labels but I'll keep an eye out for it from here on out to stop my microwave's thievery

        • Nothing wrong with microwave as a method of cooking, it's more about how long you cook for (steamed veg only need a bit of water and not long). Most people's grand parents probably boiled the heck out of vegetables back in the day.

$1 a tin of John West anchovies on same page also a good price. Thanks OP

I often forget about Reject shop as a source of bargains. You can get quite good deals on some toiletries as well.

  • Good deal. I live on this stuff, and the cheapest I get it is Aldi at $1.69 for a 250g packet. The good thing is that these last in the cupboard so you can buy in bulk and stock up

    • +1

      Aldi is now $2

        sad face…

    • +2

      Well, that's annoying.

      • Agree - I used to get instant rice semi regularly.

    • +2

This goes for all rice, but yes these instant cups can’t be rinsed and are higher in plastic.

      • Why worry about relatively inert plastic when arsenic is a much bigger alleged problem with most rice.

        • Why worry about…

Because we now live in times that are so easy that we have to go out of our way to find things to be concerned about 😁

          • @1st-Amendment: You mean humans are always striving to improve, even when things are 'easy'? Sounds good to me.

            • @gakko:

You mean humans are always striving to improve, even when things are 'easy'? Sounds good to me.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. That doesn't sound good to me.

I imagine the micro plastics gets pooped out anyway…

Research reveals plastic levels in food staples

Yeah, well that is why you avoid eating staples.

Much better value - don't be lazy, and reduce waste :).

    • +8

I buy the 5kg packets, but in fairness to OP they specifically said it was for travel etc where cooking isn't really an option.

      • +2

Oh right must have missed that, fair enough.
A lot of people just buy them anyway though when they could buy a 15$ rice cooker and you'd make up the money in no time.

      • +1

Yep we mostly cook rice at home in the rice cooker, either basmati, Jasmine or a combo but these are kind of handy every once in a while.

    • +1

Preparing a few hundred servings of rice separately would be much more environmentally deleterious than buying packets of rice that were done in a massive batch at one time.

        • +2

We actually do make two cups at a time sometimes. I only eat a little rice if any, my kid is little so eats small portions and then my husband will eat a standard size. So two cooked cups, or one small cup uncooked is fine for us. I’ve never really considered the energy use, those sometimes my husband deliberately does things in the peak of the day so the power comes from the solar system, including on occasion cooking rice 😆

          • @morse: yeah was talking about one-two cups uncooked, not cooked.

Yeah i probably cook rice once a week and lasts up to 4 days in the fridge.
I'm sure it's still better than all the waste and extra cost.

            • @G-rig: It is better for sure. Apparently you’re not meant to reheat rice, but we do it all the time and have no issues.

              • @morse: I've hard that, but makes no sense if all these microwave rice are cooked too.
Never had an issue, just refridgerate within two hours of cooking.

    • also takes 40+ mins prep, stop comparing apples to oranges

      • You cooking brown rice or something? Doesn't take long at all, rinse well and into the rice cooker, just have to do it ahead of time, whenever

        • -1

          Probably uses colander. Aiyoh.

          • +1

@Tiggrrrrr: He's not that off, all the good rice cookers take 30-40 mins.

For quick lunches at work I like the aldi imperial brown plus can of tuna.

            • @fusion17: Mine takes 10mins to “cook” then another 20 to steam it off

            • @fusion17: The point is it takes stuff all time to put it on, just have to remember to do it ahead of time, at any time in the week/day before you want it.

            • @fusion17: 30-40 minutes?
              Mine takes less than that.

              EDIT:

The cooking times of 5 popular rice cookers
              • Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker and Warmer: 20 minutes
              • black+decker 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Steamer: 20 minutes
              • Aroma 20-Cup Rice Cooker and Steamer: 15 minutes
              • Hamilton Beach Digital Simplicity Rice Cooker & Food Steamer: 20 minutes
              • Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker: 12 minutes

              • @Tiggrrrrr: I won't bother to go through them all since the first is already wrong.

"The Neuro Fuzzy's only downside is its relative slowness: Unless you use the quick-cook setting, it takes at least 40 minutes to make a batch of white rice and over 90 minutes to make brown rice"

You are talking about the quick cook function they all have - this basically replicates the $10 kmart ones. I know because mine does it too, and it's clearly Inferior to the normal mode.

                • @fusion17: I am comparing convenience time of microwave rice packets.
So yes, times above are for the quick-rice option, as quick rice is still a superior option to microwave packets.

                • @fusion17: I can do brown rice in the instant pot pretty quick, will time it next time. Most of the time is letting it cool before opening lid, bit could always hit the pressure release to speed it up

Sounds like some people just need to plan ahead and get organised. The packet ones are good if you're stuck though. I'd rather not hear up plastic these days and reduce waste, and save money.

      • Presoak overnight and it ain't too bad.

        • Are you from the UK?
I haven't heard of anyone doing that since leaving the UK.

  • I bought a 14 pack from coles for $14 a few weeks ago, this is 1/2 price that really.

    Mmmm heating up plastic 😛

Weirdly, that's the only variety i can find in the reject shop(s) near me.

  • How to you buy these? I went to the reject shop today and they didn't have it.

    • +1

You go to the shop and see if they have it in stock. I only found one variety in my local and it was tucked away and a bit hard to find. There was also Riviana basmati precooked sachets 250g for $1 too.

      • Out of luck at my local store. wanted to keep couple of packs in the pantry for making fried rice.

        • That’s a shame. I’m not sure how long the offer has been on, I chanced upon it when looking for something else. Aldi probably has the cheapest precooked when there’s no sale. For fried rice, I cook in rice cooker and chill in fridge prior to cooking. But I do understand sometimes you just want to make something very quickly, especially if cooking for one. This some eggs, veggies and sauces would make for a very quick easy and filling meal.

  • What would Uncle Roger say about microwavable rice?

    • haiyaa!

    • I think Jamie Oliver used the pouch equivalent in a recipe and he was mortified such a product existed.

      • and chilli jam lol

  • Sucks there isn't one anywhere near Brisbane. All are miles away.

    • Yes, they are pretty much all in the burbs. Carindale is probably closest to the city. When I lived in Brisbane I’d do the pilgrimage out to the suburban shopping malls every few weeks.

  • +1

FYI for those in Vic and SA unable to find stock @ reject shop, NQR also have the brown rice ones 6(x2pk) for $6 - i.e. same price but have to buy 6.

  • Can anyone confirm stores with stock in Perth?
