how do these compare to the hush puppies

    • +1

Never used any of the hush puppies boots. I don't like the appearance of their sole it looks so plastic thingy..

      • Me too don't like the sole or the design of their chlesia boots. Shoe is too curved from toes for my liking and sole looks plasticky and cheap

    • its under Pacific Brands as well…

      similar quality… probably only lasts a year…

      • +1

I usually buy a new pair each black Friday sale for about 50-65. Sadly they didn't go on their usual sale last year and it's showing.

12-18 months is about right if you wear them to work everyday.

        • yeah indeed, the usual price of Hush Puppies and Julius Marlow that I used to buy back then was around $50-$70…

sometimes Myer has a great sale of Julius Marlow

    • Get blundstone dress boots and never look back. I've tried quite a few boots looking for the sweet spot of supports my foot, good quality, isnt RM williams, is decent price, etc. etc. and blunnies are where its at in Australia.

      • +2

Depends on each foot I guess. Someone told me Blundstone slip on boots were the best so I bought a pair. The size was correct but after 30 minutes I was certain they were some of the most uncomfortable shoes I've ever worn. They also felt cheap and nasty and poorly constructed compared to some Redbacks. I bought the Redback slip ons for working in the garage and mowing and they were like switching to comfortable slippers. I could wear them all day long. The Blundstones were preventing me standing for long periods, getting stuff done, so I sold them in a garage sale - good riddance! The Redbacks had a clear material on the sole that degrades and falls apart though. They do make them with plain black rubber sole but they feel like they're constructed differently. So I'm still looking for another brand as comfortable.

    • +2

I prefer hush puppies, much better quality. Had both, still using hush puppies for 2 years now. With this one, sole gone from the side after around 2 months of light use.

      • +1

        Exact same experience here

    • +1

Hush Puppies Chelsea leather boot any day. I own from both brands and Hush Puppies are way more comfy and durable. Have been wearing them for a year now and no complaints.

  • +2

Don't forget 9% cashback - my order was tracked immediately

    • I missed that one

    • Usually cashback would exclude the 10% sign up coupon code though 🤔

      • mine was tracked with sign up code

  • +4

My hush puppies feel more durable and comfy than this imo

  • +1

These are too narrow for my foot, I find the Florsheim wide fit better. However these are a nice shoe if you don't have fat feet.

    • I have wide feet and have never fit into any pair florsheim as they are way too narrow. Julius Marlow's are the only suit shoe that is wide enough for my foot.

No idea how you came to that conclusion.

  • +2

With Julius Marlow you want their so-called 'crystal sole'. Its the only one that does wear quickly

    • +1

yep….JM shoes are good if you can get them under $50.

The sole wears down long before the leather if you actually have to walk in them on pavement - but perfect for office jockeys who have a parking space - i know this from past experience.

that said i do have a couple of pairs that are over 5 years old as they haven't been used much in WFH over past few years, and fine for more formal occasions if they look brand new where you cant wear your vans/converse/reebok pumps/jordans/air max/ultraboost/thongs/uggs/slippers

    • O2 Motion soles are pretty good as well IME. Supposed to be kind of like a sports shoe sole, and I definitely find them more comfortable than other boots once worn in a bit.

    • *doesn't wear quickly

  • How do you get the 10% off first order ? I have signed up, there’s no promo code and it doesn’t reduce the price by 10% checkout. I am signed in aswell.

    • Update: I was just being impatient. They do email the promo code.

      • Same… For me, it took them about 10 mins to send the email with promo code.

      • How long are we talking about here?

        • For me it's ~10 mins. Be sure to check your junk box. I received 2 emails which went to my junk, first one is the account activation and 2nd one is the one with the promo code that you can use when you buy.

          • @goliath: I received an email saying they migrated my account from their old site or something. Guess no code for that account. Created a new account with some spare emails and received code with 1 but not the other.

  • +2

be careful with this company - they dont seem to care much after they get your money; make sure you pay with paypal

i was one who had a bad experience on this deal - a stack of mistruths and contradictions from customer service - personally i will never buy from them again

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/767906

    • +2

Agreed, they still have my money from that deal.

      • always pay with paypal with these type of bargain basement companies…paypal will pretty much always issue a refund in any case where you can prove a company misleads you with screen / email grabs

        • I did pay with PayPal but when I appealed to PayPal they wanted me to pay postage which wouldn't be reimbursed. It wasn't really worth the hassle in my opinion.

  • Are these better than Julius Marlow Grand shoes?

  • -6

this is so much cheaper then the rm williams one and they are identical. why would you buy rm williams?

    • +7

I wouldn't buy Hush Puppies or Julius Marlow btw…

I bought several of them in the past and they would fail in less than year from leather panels falling apart and even holes on the soles that i could feel water going in as i stepped on puddles.

I didn't go the RM Williams way though as my $120 Florsheim shoes have been keeping up really well.

    • +3

      Because they're not identical.

    • +2

Bad luck, looks like they don't have troll sizing :/

      • troll? i see no difference between the 2, they aren't identical? whats the difference to make it cost 4-7 times more then these? it seems like this is a great deal.

        • different built… like comparing a Toyota Echo to a Lexus sedan…

you may argue that both are Toyota-produced cars… but completely made with different build quality and made for different target audience

        • Quality of materials and manufacturing obviously. R.M's will last 10 years where these last 1. Quality ends up cheaper in the long run.

          • @swhitmore: My mum has got some RM's that she ordered 30 years ago - they used to custom make them. You sent off an outline of your foot and they sent the boots a few weeks later. Back in the day

            • @King Tightarse: i bet it wasn't as expensive as it is now, even with inflation. i would love to have boots like that. any company still do it the old fashion way like that. i think that would be more worth it for a custom boot.

  • If you are only wearing these to office or a function with little walking on good surfaces, they are perfect. If you are after a true riding boot for rougher conditions and use, look at the offerings from real work boot brands. Definitely not RMs unless you have money to burn.

    • +2

A lot of people like to talk down RM because of the price, they are still genuinely good work boots if you don't need steel caps, pricey for sure but they do last.

  • Seems Blundtone boots are rated well but more than double the price.

    • Blundtone = intended for work, practical use (functional boots)
JM = more focused on fashion, style ("dressy" boots)

  • I dont understand chelsea boots. I got a pair of hush puppies and they r so uncomfortable to walk in. And feel so odd

  • +1

Save ya money, get some rm's

    • But they costs 4-5 times more? What if you don’t want to own a pair of shoes for more than 3 years 🤷‍♂️

      • +2

3 years is optimistic for JM, mine have worn out after 1-2 years. if you look after your RMs they look good and new forever. it also moulds to your feet so the more you wear them the more comfy they are, and you can resole.
even if you just want to cheapest pair of shoes, 100 every 2 years adds up, it ends up being about the same
only thing is RMs have decreased in quality nowadays

        • RMs have decreased in quality nowadays

At $629 and decreased quality you say!!! Wow

          • +2

@kaleidoscope: 445 at the moment on another deal posted!
my pick would be the comfort craftsmen which is quite versatile, i prefer it to sneakers for a daily as it's so easy to put on and take off, and quite comfortable. the dynamic flex has more of an arch but easier to wear out especially if it's worn outside of the office
you really have to go instore and try it and make sure it's the right size and width but once worn in it's great

      • +3

I would say you need to change your tune, with the way the world is going for sustainability. Reduce is the first cab off the rank.

        • sustainability

judge me all you want, but i wouldn’t pay 4 times more for something just because it’s labeled as sustainable… also going through comments it seems rm pairs require repairs too from time to time? … wouldn’t the worn out parts thrown in the trash anyway 🤷‍♂️

          • +1

@kaleidoscope: This has nothing to do with the label "sustainable" and everything to do with a product being actually sustainable. Better to repair worn boots with less materials than buying whole new ones which costs a lot more to make beyond just the parts.

          • +2

@kaleidoscope: I've owned but these and the Hush Puppies. Nither laster much more than a year. Ends up being pretty wasteful, and more expensive in the long run.

            • @swhitmore: oh okay thanks for the feedback. May I ask how often you’d wear them? I at most 2 days a week for work will be enough I recon. I assume not lasting is due to the wear and tear

              • @kaleidoscope: 5 days a week in an office. I would say normal wear and tear. Just don't expect amazing quality from these, but if you're looking for something for a few days a week I'm sure they will be fine.

The Hush Puppies are more comfortable though. They are about the same price on Amazon (pretty much always that price) https://amzn.asia/d/9Dm6OpP

I suggest going into Myer and trying them on first.

                • @swhitmore: Great, yeah just did try them at shoe warehouse outlet yesterday. Hush puppies were definitely more comfortable. I wasn’t sure about the grip on wet days. Gonna try them again and go with something I’m comfortable.

      • +3

You get 10+ years out of a pair, while these i'd be happy if they last more than 2

  • Thanks OP, bought two pairs.

So much better quality than Aquila.

  • How dark are these? Would they pair with black pants for office work?

    • Personally I only ever wear black boots with black pants. You may get away with it when not in bright light/sun light but when you are would look a bit odd IMO.

  • Thanks OP, been looking for some work boots. Not sure if cashback will track with 10% coupon but worth a try.

  • Are they suitable for Melbourne winters? Also how’s the grip on wet days? (Melb cbd pavements and wet surfaces can be really nasty)

    • Very valid question! I have seen many people slipped down on wet pavements in the cbd

  • If I wear a half size should I go up or down?

  • +2

    aaaaand…it's gone (404 error)

  • Damn just missed it :(

  • I'd imagine these are garbage quality

    • +2

      Leather usually good, soles rubbish

      • Exactly this. JM & HP usually last me 12-18 months.

  • Still available in-store

  • +3

as someone who has bought like 7 pairs of Julius Marlows over the years, I would suggest saving your money unless you get them dirt dirt cheap. They truly do fall apart, not only with wear, but with time. I've never had a pair last more than 1 year with intermittent use, and the pairs that i've stored (since new) practically fell apart after a few years sitting on the shelf. They're not full grain leather, more like a leather covering over fabric, and the soles are super weak. I have always liked the styles, hence why I bought so many, but their lack of durability makes them hard to maintain, and they dont last even if you look after them

    • which brand do you recommend without costing an arm and a leg ?

      • +2

I haven't got a great deal of exp with brands so I couldn't confidently recommend any. I recently bought a 2nd hand pair of RM's for $150 that were a few years old and these things feel indestructible (for an occasional office-worker use. I would say if you are in the market for a pair of aus made boots that are inherently more durable and are designed to be repaired when they eventually fall into disrepair, go for RMs. But otherwise anything that is full grain leather and has soles that are properly stitched to the uppers, not glued only.
You will definitely pay top dollar for well made shoes, but if you go for cheapies, it just comes down to how many pairs you are willing to go through and chuck into landfill.
I would mention that there is also a time/stress cost in having to buy 5 pairs of shoes in the time that one good pair would last. If new RMs last 10 years and JMs last 2 years (say), that's 4 extra times you have to go into a store or online and go through the process of finding another pair of shoes.. if your time is worth anything, the ~$550 (sale price) you spent on RM's is probably saved anyway since you'd have probably spent ~$80 each (average) on the 5 pairs of JMs anyway (=$400). I think you'd have definitely wasted more than $150 worth of time sourcing the additional 4 pairs of JMs, unless you love shoe shopping :)

That said, the comparison isn't completely apples to apples, RM's don't look the same as other dress shoes, they are effectively a boot, so ymmv finding another brand with comparable durability and quality/repairability. there is also comfort to consider. Some of the JMs i've had are great, most were not; the uppers aren't soft or dont easily mould to your feet, so they typically wear out by the time they wear "in" lol!
