Tri-band mesh wifi solutions are expensive

I was hoping these puppies would be reduced by 50% for Prime Day, this is an early Prime day deal @ 35% off.

Some people who like to tinker and customise their settings will prefer a different solution, but if you just want to plug it in and let it work these aren't a bad option.

Same pack is $299 USD which is about $450 AUD on Amazon.com (no shipping to Australia) with a free Firestick 4K Max.

I would love Amazon AU to sweeten the deal by at least adding the Firestick too…

  • I'm assuming these are compatible with Google home devices?

    • +4

Compatible as in they can connect to wifi? Yes
      Control, no they're Amazon/Echo ecosystem.

      • They also support HomeKit Secure Router.

Bought XE75 Pro couple of days back cause had to claim on tax 😭😭😭

be mindful of the reduced functionality in Australia vs US.

A lot of the "eero skills" dont work here in Australia. I currently use the eero Pro 6 setup and am regretting it

    • What useful skills do you miss out on?

Can you set it up as being in the US? (I assume you just need to use a US account?) Or do you use skills connected to your AU account?

    • +1

Curious what skills you use. I have an Echo and never use a single skill.

    • the biggest issue i have with AU functionality is that it doesn't support Echos as additional nodes like in the US. That would be incredible.

The key here is tri-band not many of those around. Asus XT8 (XT9 OS) is the competition.

If you aren't able to run cables between the access points, they use wireless and this is where tri-band comes into play, as they use a dedicated wifi channel for the backhaul. Unlike dual band where the backhaul uses the same channel as devices, thus competes for bandwidth.

Can get the tp-link deco X68 with tri band.

$454.90 for 3 pack on amazon.

      • Currently have the Orbi RBK50 AC5000 tri-band (just on 4 years old)

Connecting all devices to it wirelessly, and have some major drops in speed (down to 20mbs) too often for my liking

Is TP-Link x68 that much better?

        • TBH I have only set up the X20 for a relative, so haven't used either the X68 or Orbi to know whats best.

Just mentioned it because the XT8 is a bit of a pricey alternative. As with anything though, you get what you pay for.

Got it for 664 12 months ago, to think i could have saved 100 by waiting for 12 months

  • I've had a good experience with this setup.
Doesn't work directly with Optus FTTP (but that's an optus issue i think)
But the wifi has been flawless going to the Granny Flat.

Just in time before my price protection runs out too. thanks op

eero Pro 6 can be plugged into the nbn NTD and configured to any ISP. Optus 4G failover and Optus VoIP phone doesn't work in this setup.

      1. Get rid of the Optus modem/router.
      2. Wait at least 30 minutes.
      3. Factory reset the eero.
      4. Plug in one eero to the nbn NTD.
      5. Open the eero app.
      6. Go to settings, networking settings, ISP settings, WAN type and check that the eero is set to DHCP for Optus.

Thank you, I'll give this a go.
I haven't tried it with the factory reset step

  • Ive got a set of these that covers my back of house (where I need them most). Ive since had a cabler install two ethernet plugs at the front of my house (an old Queenslander with a large verandah) and more specifically under the verandah. They we installed to provide better coverage to the front/side lawns and the front of the house. Ive got FTTP, but happy on 500/40

Given they would be connected via ethernet to my switch and see little action would getting another three set of the pros be over kill? I see that a three pack of 6+ would be $419, while the cheapest eeros are now $200. Or should I say stuff it and just get these?

Also any ideas if further discounts would be coming on the actual Prime sale days?

    • I am interested to know how these go when you have them all connected to your switch simultaneously.

I emailed Eero support about this and they said if more than one Eero is connected directly to your switch, performance will be worse than if only 1 is connected and the rest are linked wirelessly. Eero support said connecting all 3 to the switch would cause issues. They said if you want to wire them up, wire them directly (not via a switch)….

      • +1

        Talking rubbish.
Ethernet backhaul should increase performance. Either to the switch or daisychained. Just check cables are all cat6, and that the switch is gigabit .

        • I am just telling you what Eero support told me:

Actually, it is possible to setup the eeros this way but i do not recommend it. Like i explained in the previouse email we recommned that you have only eero connected to your modem.

Otherwise if you have all of them connected modem—->switch—->eero the eeros will start interfering with each other.

This is Aleksandar from eero Support, we're sorry for the late response, we've been receiving a larger amount of requests and we're doing our best to respond as fast as possible.

          1. Yes, all three devices are identical and all of them are able to be your gateway eero and extenders aswell.
          2. Yes, only the eero that will be your Gateway needs to stay connected to your modem all the time and the others require only power to work.
          3. The eero network likes to have a designated gateway eero so basically it is good to have only eero connected to your modem. If you want to have the other eeros hardwired i would recommend that you hardwire them into each other and not all of them to the modem.
          4. You can follow the instructions in the video below to help you with the setup process:

          • @TheCandyMan2020: Ah i think i understand what you are attempting.
The switch should be connected to the backend of the 1st eero. So Modem to Eero to swtch to as many Eeros as you like.
Do not put switch in front of 1st gateway eero or they won't know who's boss

            • @Kanjus: yes that's how ive got it.

FTTP Modem -> Eero Pro [ethernet plug 1] -> my switch connects to the Eero Pro via ethernet plug 2. My NAS and all the other Eero pros are connected to the switch

              • +1

                @penfold81: OK so

                Modem - Eero - switch - Eero x2

                Thanks guys

I did think it was strange that it couldn't work but Eero support never explained that configuration.

                Cheers

That is interesting. When I buy these, I'll have 7; with potentially 6 of them being able to connect via ethernet. I thought having them all connected via ethernet cords would be a benefit in regards to getting max wifi strength further away from hub without issues involving walls etc.

  • +1

I have these in bridge mode, opnsense in front. works a treat.

  • Can someone please suggest a decent one out of the 3 models.. eero 6 or 6+ or the 6 pro.. Is all 3 support wifi 6E or just the pro model? Apart from wifi speed, coverage and bands is there any difference between them?

    • None of them support wifi 6E. Only eero Pro 6E currenlty support wifi 6E but not sold in Australia.

      • Thanks @yeqingyezhunan. In that case I might go with the basic eero 6.. I don't require triband and gigabit speed :)
