what world are you livin in young keyboard warlock…? lol

    • Is the new 5g modem worse than the previous?

      • no this modem is superior its the Telstra 5G Internet Modem 2, people are confusing it with the Telstra Smart Modem 3 which is for fixed line services…

  • +1

I got one last month when it was "first month free". When it works it's 10 times faster than I was getting on fixed line. Has fairly regular dropouts - at least every few days. Customer service was abysmal - they cancelled my order without even emailing me. I only found out when I hadn't received the modem (after an email that it was coming within 5 days). Don't deal with online if you can avoid it - head into a store.

    • +2

Telstra CS is the worst. No one knows anything. I have a whole trail of chats and calls trying to get my internet fixed. Then when I tried to cancel because nothing was working, they couldn't cancel it. I got several confirmation emails/numbers that my internet was cancelled but it wasn't and they kept charging me. For about 5 months they had to refund me internet charges bc of how incompetent they were.

    • I've tried it a couple of times - totally fine those times, but last month it was abysmal. Kept dropping out multiple times a day. Same issue with my belong sim in the Telstra Smart Modem 3

@tomsco: You have fun wearing girls knickers and lingerie but just don't expect it to sell product, sweetpea.

  • How does latency compare to FTTP?

    • +1

      Expect about 20ms overheads.

      • +1

        Thank you

        • Plus a few quick spikes every hour to about 280ms (which always seem to happen when I'm trying to get a headshot)

    • I have had both services
Cod went from 15ms up to 50ms

      • Thanks - giving me the exact detail I needed lol

        • 5G is using Carrier Grade NAT and can give you a strict NAT while gaming and break remote access to Plex, select security camera systems, servers, home automation, networked printers and more.

Stay on nbn FTTP for best latency. ISPs on nbn can turn off Carrier Grade NAT if you need remote access or get a strict NAT while gaming.

I will not choose the service because of the ad.

    • Fascinating story bro

    • Indeed. And the silent majority will also reject this corporate degeneracy.

      • +6

No they won't. We had a vote on that remember? The homophobes lost.

        • -4

I don't remember voting for corporate degeneracy. Remind us all when we voted on that.

          • +7

@[Deactivated]: There is no degeneracy in this ad. Only to minority bigots like you.

    • very poor marketing, or we majority people simple are not the target, so why choose it???

      • +3

Is this like when the "majority" weren't going to buy Cheer cheese and then it's market share increased? I am sure Telstra is well aware of what the "majority" thinks.

        • -2

Typical woke BS. Their sales are collapsing. Please link to their "market share increase" https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11432127/Coon-Chees…

            @[Deactivated]: Daily mail. 😆

            Wrong market share has increased.

@Aureus: Still no link, just emojis. Everyone can smell your BS.

                • +1

@Aureus: Hilarious. You post a Fox article to combat a Daily Mail article you lol'd at. Typical woke hypocrite. You have no scruples or self-respect.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Wasn't going to pay for thousands for the paper they reference. Are you suggesting the market research company is a member of the woke conspiracy.

Fonterra is a public company, you can read the company announcements and come to the same conclusion if you really want to.

                    • +1

@Aureus: You mocked the Daily Mail and now you're quoting a News article. Go away, you're an intellectual fraud and a bore.

                      • @[Deactivated]: 🤣 Didn't even read my response.

                        • @Aureus: Enough with the juvenile emojis, are you a teen? The cheese company got spooked by their name that had nothing to do with 'coons' (started by Edward William Coon), but I'm sure they won't be using LGBT folks to sell their brand. Although you never know, with folks like you egging them on they might go full woke and completely tank their brand.

                          • @[Deactivated]: No I am just very adept at emoji usage. 🎯

They didn't get spooked. They wanted to change the name because they did market research and found they would sell more cheese with a new name. The ❄️ who were so angry about a company rebranding really had no impact in the end.

I didn't egg them on, because I like most people don't care about a company rebranding. 🧀🧀

              • @[Deactivated]: "Between 2018 and 2020, Coon was the leading brand with an 8.9 per cent market share, according to Euromonitor data.

In 2021, under the new name Cheer, it increased that share to 9 per cent, and 9.2 per cent in 2022."

      • What's wrong with the ad?

Super-fast, super simple. 5G Home Internet.

That all seems reasonable, what am I missing?

        • +4

There’s 2 males pictured which is very offensive apparently, and will cause Telstra to fail because the silent majority (who voted for gay marriage) don’t like it.

          • @Randolph Duke: Thanks, didn't notice the picture and was really confused by the comments.
I don't think Telstra will lose any money over this lol.

      • +3

Do you also not buy products that have women or children pictured? What about races other than Australian?

All good, we're picking up the bill for their 10 years of (profanity) ups anyway

  • +1

I'm guessing this service uses CG-NAT? Which makes it useless for those of us hosting servers.

  • Used to be free for the first month.

  • If I cancel on the 3rd month and return the modem, it will be $0 charges?

    • How did you arrive at this?

      • +2

        $1 + $85 + $85 = 0

jokes aside, I think Alvinheng96 means no charge for the modem.

  • It's just silly how they restrict people (and you know why) because it's clearly not reception as I get range on my mobile modem (Telstra) and phone and even Vodafail has 5G. But my home address is ineligible.

    • It's not silly, each 5G cell can only handle so much data before it begins to slow down for everyone, that's how 5G contention works.
A lot of fixed Home 5G services downloading a lot of data on a single cell slows down that cell for everyone on it.

  • Anyone with 5G game? Is there a huge difference? It's not like I get great speeds with NBN.

  • I had a FTTN with Aussiebroadband for a while (25 MBPS, laggy in evenings), when the free FTTP was announced, jumped on it for 100MBPS speeds, now things are lot worse for some reason, I get 10MBPS speeds usually, lots of dropouts so meetings are very rough now. It's a shock as I have moved from FTTN to FTTP (fiber to the home) and its done considerably worse. Aussie broadband have not been as helpful, asking me to move my router which has been consistently good for a number of years.

So I was looking for an alternate, will give this a try for a month and if this works, will stick to this. Will actually be cheaper than Aussie Broadband FTTP, so keen to test this out. I do a bit of gaming as well so will give those numbers too. Currently I am at about 20ms for most Oceania servers.

    • +1

You're already on the best internet connection. Why would you downgrade to flimsy wireless connection? Maybe you should try changing ISP?

      • My speed doesn't say so, its barely 10MBPS. If I want 100MBPS speed, the cost will be $100+, 5G higher speed (telstra is claiming 300MBPS) is cheaper, why bother with NBN really. If 5G is consistent, I am happy to ditch NBN fully. Obviously it will need testing so lets see how telstra goes next few months.

        • If you're motivated by cost then yeah, 5G will be cheaper and it would make sense to switch. Reading your comment made me think that you were keen to move to 5G due to internet stability issues despite having the best internet technology. If you're getting 10mpbs while being on 100Mbps plan then somethings definitely wrong that it should be worthwhile trying to fix the connection rather than having a dodgy NBN connection. Best to fix it while it's still "new" so to speak.

    • +1

Join Launtel using their $0 7-day trial to compare speeds and if the dropouts still exist. The Aussie BB service won't get disconnected. Long term Superloop and Leaptel have better nbn deals for price to speed ratio than Aussie BB.

What router do you have? Is your router plugged into the nbn NTD or do you have another router in-between?

      • Aussie is supposed to be as good as any and it's still not great. Happy to try Telstra at this stage and see how I go. I can always go back to NBN.

        • +1

Normally you get good speeds with Aussie BB and FTTP. Launtel can get you up and running in as little as 20 minutes for $0. This tells you if there is speed problems in your area with Aussie BB, a problem with the nbn side of things or your router.

5G is using Carrier Grade NAT and has higher latency which isn't as good for gaming. Carrier Grade NAT can give you a strict NAT while gaming and break remote access to Plex, select security camera systems, servers, home automation, networked printers and more.

Stay on FTTP for best latency. ISPs on nbn can turn off Carrier Grade NAT if you need remote access or get a strict NAT while gaming.

100/20 is $100 or more with Aussie BB and Telstra. Superloop and Leaptel have 100/20 for $69 and $75 a month. Superloop have 1000/50 for $99 a month.

    • Something must be wrong with your modem/router or the cable to your house.
Also, try setting your DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 in case it's a shitty DNS server.

  • 5G Home Internet is not available at your address

  • Would CG-NAT let me view/control the TP-Link Deco WiFi switches remotely?

  • I'm currently on Telstra FTTP, the 250/25 @ 140 per month. It's rock solid and has been for years. I am very close to a 5G cell and the speeds I see for 5G on my phone are usually 500+/50+ up. I don't use over 1000 GB a month. Not a gamer so latency isn't a major issue. This is very tempting, mainly to increase the upload speed and it's way cheaper, however I don't know what restrictions there are around VPN usage etc - anyone know what the router interface is like?

    • You can't port forward with the 5g modem. Tailscale will fix this though.

  • I like the photo of the two affectionate housemates choosing Telstra for their home internet.

  • I had this setup before. Heads up - the 5G is only for downloads, uploads go over the 4G network. So this is no good for gaming.

In fact, I had lower pings when I dropped back to 4G/4G vs this 5G/4G hybrid.

  • Using this to reactivate my telstra points and hopefully get all the other subscriptions

  • +1

I tried this at the beginning of the year and unfortunately it just wasn’t stable for me. I live in Melbourne CBD so it could be because of a lot of traffic even though I’m right across the road from a 5g tower.

I would check your speeds and latency as I’m not sure if 5g is the best for gaming as i would get dropouts and packet loss. This is great speeds if you're just streaming. Ps Telstra support sucks and i was given the run around for troubleshooting the whole month.

  • -1

Got this last month. That 1000 gb data cap is a big drawback. Especially for a family. Used up within 15 days.

  • Is 5G any better than NBN for gaming on PC and Consoles?

  • I don't get the 44mbps cap on uploads…. no reason it can't be symmetrical, or even 2:1, but at almost 1/8th the speed, that's just rubbish from all the telcos…

    • I was getting 750/150

      • On the home BB 5G or phone? I get great upload speed on my phone, but still nowhere near as fast as download.. I'm a photographer, so tend to upload a lot of files for clients/backup…

        • On the home BB

  • Does this deal have an expiry or can I wait a few weeks?

    • Had the same question. Also will I be able to reactivate my Telstra account and access Telstra plus by signing up to this?

  • How is the modem return process? Is it smooth without modems going missing or being incorrectly charged for the modem?

  • Was getting decent speeds ~360Mbps download and ~35Mbps upload but unfortunately can't do port forwarding on this one. So sadly I'm going to return.

  • My home address is not "available", tried work address and shipped it to home. Been getting 90MBps max so far. My phone on the other hand reported 450MBps steadily when I was on JB Hi-Fi mobile plan…

Was hopping that I could get the speed on my phone but looks like 5g Home Internet has different config. Gonna return the modem to Telstra, NBN is still a better option for me.

  • I always get an error trying to sign up for this.

  • I just checked my address and it's a little bit bizarre! Both the right and left sides of neighbours' addresses are available. However, my address is showing unavailable!

  • -1

Theoretical query; if you sign up, start up the modem and then take advantage of, say, the free Kayo 12 month offer and then finish up and send Telstra back the modem… what happens to the Kayo deal?
    Asking for a friend, obviously…

    • My subscription lasted an additional month, so two in total, before being cancelled.

  • I cancelled a few days ago but didn't get any information about returning the modem. Anyone know how long they take?
