A deals a deal, but my god this is poor value compared to what cards have come before..

    • +2

A lot of QFF credit cards have changed in regards to initial sign-up bonus points. Have also recently seen alot of exclusion criteria now listing an 18 month waiting period from previous cards…sad days

    • +1

You should look at the AMEX Ultimate card. It used to be 110k/120k qantas points just before covid. Now it is at 60k points.

  • +3

So 90k points for $225? Considering other cards have been ~$100 for 60-70k it's not a great deal.

And you think this was 180k points for $100 last year :/

    • +1

I reckon they juiced up the points when nobody could fly and now that airlines heating up again they are being stingy on points.

I got the 180k it was good

    • I agree, its 90k for $300 (225 annual fee +75 qantas rewards fee)

      • no, its $150 + $75 if you existing Westpac member(just need to open an account, hardly takes a few minutes)

        • Yeah this is where the ozbargain title rules make things confusing. The $295 really shouldn't be mentioned in the title, but the rules here enforce it.

    • How about the ANZ rewards black? 180,000 points for $375 (with $150 cashback).

I'm new to this game and don't know what equates to good value.

I did do some calcs and the 180,000 points + fee seems to net me about $500 off a flight I need to book later in the year.

      • Hey mate, I believe the card you're looking at gets you ANZ rewards points which is a different program than Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

You'd be able to use ANZ points to transfer over to Krismiles points (Singapore Airlines) or Velocity Points (Virgin Airlines).

A good value baseline I go by is seeing how much it would cost to upgrade to business class flights ( SYD-SIN PEAK). That's 55K points to the value of $2000. So… $150 annual fee to get enough points for a business class upgrade.

    • Yeah i'm pretty split on this deal.. I had my last westpac CC about 15m ago so I am due for one but I'm also trying to decided whether 90k for $225 is worth it or not. It probably is, its just a matter of whether they'll upgrade this deal soon or if a better deal will pop up at some point.

Haven't had a proper good deal except the recent NAB ones for ages.

      • Platinum is 70k for $125. That one's better value imo.

Gone are the days of 160k point cards unfortunately..

        • absolutely right. I missed that.

Thanks for that pal. What else you churning? Thinking of doing the citi one too

          • @bidam1: Just finished the HSBC platinum - $500 cashback

Thinking of moving to ANZ black.. Moving soon, so could do with the giftcards.

  • Applied for this last week - no updates, called them, and have been told to wait and wait (no timelines)

    • Any updates?

      • @harn.mui - called them twice, nothing. Been like 12 days or so

        • Tks @b0nd. :( thats disappointing…

    • Has your application been approved yet?

I checked my status in my Westpac portal, it says I have:

      Tasks to complete
      Liability Verification

I've uploaded all the bank letters and its still showing as "task to be complete"

      Was yours the same too??

      • I've just applied and got the same thing - do you know how long it took for you in the end for your card to be approved?

  • If you have a home loan with Westpac/BOM may be eligible for this card to be free - which I had. It's a big spend, but 90k points for "free" (shoutout to my ever-increasing interest rate) seemed decent.

    • Really? We have a loan with BoM and it only gives us a reduced fee option for their Amplify cards :( How did you get the card fee free? Did you call them to try and negotiate no fee?

      • +3

Advantage package should give you fee free. Call them if youve been charged and theyll refund.

      • I have home loan with BOM and I pay an annual loan package fee. Because of that I don't pay annual fee whenever I get credit card from them.

        • If you close your BOM credit card, would you be eligible for another credit card sign-up bonus after 12m?

          • @northshore: Yep, have done this twice already in my 2 years with them and got bonus everytime. Just remember to keep next application 12 months apart.

    • hey, did you first apply for this credit card through the Westpac website and then you got in touch with a customer service rep to get the annual fee waived? What was the process to it? Did you call them beforehand?

      • +1

        That's pretty much it.

I applied for the card, got approved, then they charged me the card fee - and I called the bank (BOM) and feigned ignorance/confusion as to why I'd been charged as I have a mortgage with them saying I thought it was free (had no idea, just tried my luck) after bouncing around in some different teams, they agreed and said they'd rebate the fee.

        • Beautiful, thanks heaps for sharing your experience. I'm going to try my luck with the same haha

        • Interesting, I'll give it a go, I already have a free BOM card but let's see if I can get this card free too.

          • @CheapBrah: Any luck getting fees waived for the westpac altitude card if you're with
            BOM home loan ?

            • @deal01: Not sure yet, they're taking a long time to approve.

    • Yup, this is the lark I exploit each year. I pay the annual fee at the start and when the bonus points hit my account, I request a reimbursement. I have just been accepted under this latest deal (12 months and 5 days after I last closed the card) and will rinse and repeat. 90,000 QF points for $75 is a pretty good deal.

  • I'm guessing he Altitude Rewards Black card gives access to the 2 x Priority Passes while the Altitude Qantas Black card gives access to the 2 x Qantas Club Passes. Which lounge pass is better to have?

    • Qantas passes is only if you flying on Qantas. Priority Pass you can use wherever accepted and can fly any airline.

  • I haven't sign up for new cards in years. What kind of questions do they ask? Any tips to maximise your successes?

  • With regards to the minimum spend: Don't know when it started but Westpac and the banks under it are now able to detect postbillpay payments through paypal as government/bpay spend and render them ineligible for points or the minimum spend criteria. Haven't experienced it with other banks yet. Bit of a pity as it was a nice workaround to have gov and rates bills count while avoiding sniip etc fees, especially after the recent Beem fiasco.

    • Hey can you please elaborate or send link about the recent Been fiasco! Keen to hear about it. I also know there was some thing where people used BPay on their CCs with some other services to earn points too and some cards cracking down on that now

      • +1

Pretty much that you used to be able to pay bpay bills with credit cards without fees through the Beem app until they removed the function recently (due to overexposure? Unprofitable? dunno). You can read about it on the threads here on ozbargain.

  • Is the annual fee rebate method still the best to use the points? Anyone knows how long does it take for the redemption cashback to land in the CC account?

    • i don't think its a cashback. You will be charged $150 + $75 if you already have another westpac account

  • Is the altitude qantas rewards a different qanats reward program?

    • same thing. you will earn qantas points.

  • Can anyone share how long it took for card to be approved/issued (turnaround time before card arrived). TIA!

    • +1

      I applied 5th July, approved 11th July.
Can start using the virtual card right away but physical card will arrive this week most likely.

  • I've been waiting over 2 weeks and nothing yet.

    • Call them

      • I did, they just say to keep waiting.

        • They told me 2 weeks is application review period. However, they approved it next day after I called them.

    • Any luck yet?

      • +1

Yeah, I called them again a couple of days ago and the guy on the phone processed it right away.

        • I kept calling up and they wouldnt manually process for me. Eventually got approved. 1.5 weeks for me. The delays must be due to the the 700 people they just let go.

          • +1

@cuy: They wouldnt for me the first couple of calls either, not sure why they did on the third attempt.

  • Is this the best QFF points card out there atm? My ANZ black card is about to expire so need to churn to a new one

    • For the annual fee, yes. $225 including qantas reward fee

  • Anyone know if you should apply for 2 different credit cards (different banks) at the same time?

More easily rejected by both banks? Impact credit score?

Or best to wait for approval by 1 bank then apply for the 2nd one straight after?

    • +1

Probably not a good idea but I'm contemplating it too given how long Westpac is taking.

The applications will likely come up on your file and I'd imagine at least one of the banks would notice and applying for multiple credit cards at once is not a good look.

  • Hi anyone, for the last 12 month, do we know how it defined? does it meaning 365 days?

So if I close last one on 2022-07-19, can i get a new one now?

    • Best to wait a day or two extra, just in case

  • How long does the approval process take?

I checked my status in my Westpac portal, it says I have:

    Tasks to complete
    Liability Verification

I've uploaded all the bank letters and its still showing as "task to be complete"

    • when did you apply?

      • Sunday night

        • mine took a week to approve. I uploaded salary slips same day on date of application.

  • Sunday night

  • Got mine approved yesterday, anyone know how to get the passes?

    • Looks like there is a form to fill in, strange as it's normally automatic with other credit cards.

    • You have to fill the form then pay for a QF flight using the card. Passes arrived within 2 days for me

      • huh wha? What if you already got a QF tickets? Was looking to give my lounge pass to my mum and dad

        • Yeah its BS, never seen this before. Everyone else just gives the lounge passes automatically.

          • @CheapBrah: In the past I have used credit card to do carbon offset on qantas website which triggered the qantas lounge passes and were automatically added to the account. Need to test with this card.

        • To those who want the 2x qantas lounge passes, register here first

          https://loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au/

Then buy this a day later with your Westpac Qantas card ( do not use points, pay $1 )
          https://marketplace.qantas.com/au/p/climate-positive-deliver…

If you are unable to checkout for some reason like I did, add 2nd item, fill the address, then remove the 2nd item before paying.

I can confirm it worked for me.

          • @jedimaster: Thanks alot, I've just submitted

Confirmation for Qantas Club Lounge Invitation

Thankyou for registering for the Qantas Lounge Invitation. Your first spend on selected Qantas product or service is now required to complete your registration. Full details visit altitudeblack.com.au

          • @jedimaster: I'm having trouble checking out, the site is really really really slow and it freezes when I enter in my address. Worst experience ever

            Unexpected error value: { message: "Object 0220c03a-2a66-4c20-9b16-2d37d4b73219 has a different version than expected. Expected: 841 - Actual: 861.", path: ["updateMyCart"], locations: [[Object]], extensions: { code: "ConcurrentModification", currentVersion: 861 } }

          • @jedimaster: Just revisiting this

            adding the 2nd item worked

            Thank you

  • i wonder if additional card holders are eligible to receive the insurance

    • Wow good to know! When after purchasing did you get any notification on the lounge passes?

      • No notifiy. Just check your Qantas account

    • do you know of any similar item that can be bought with virgin? I got the velocity card cant find anything cheap!

      • I am not into Velocity Program so no idea

  • How long does it take to receive the points after paying off statement with minimum spend?

    • +1

Got it after first statement itself even without paying. Spent close to 9k

  • To get the reduced fee as an existing Westpac customer (I'm not currently)
Can I just sign up to a regular Westpac transaction/saver account and then apply that way? Or do I need to be an existing customer for a certain amount of days?

    • yes, I opened a regular Westpac Choice account and then I applied for the Credit card. spending done in 1 month and got the points in first statement. already closed the card and got $150 annual fee refunded by speaking to them on chat.

      • +1

Awesome, cheers for the quick reply

      • How did they refund you when you closed the credit card already?

  • Anybody know if i can or cannot use ourproperty to pay my rent and this will count? not sure if excluded.

Edit - applied and got auto accepted without showing any details wtf haha?

    • Does ourproperty charge you anything extra for credit card payments?

  • Does anyone know paying water bill is eligible purchase? Thanks

    • Usually government spends are not included but best to call them and ask. I usually spend a bit over.

  • Anybody get the velocity one? Haven't gotten my bonus but seems like I have to wait the full 3 months after hitting

    • got points after 1st statement for velocity.

  • my points were credited today on the same monthly statement I reached my $6000 spend.

Not a bad card, but could do without the $225 fee and easier way to obtain 2 x Lounge passes. I still don't know how to get mine

    • could do without the $225 fee

Did you try asking them through the web chat? Thought they don't do refunds but looks like someone up above had success surprisingly.

  • +1

This promotion was extended by Westpac till end of April.
But I do not recommend applying for their Black cards unless you earn much more than you spend each month. They auto rejected my application despite an almost 20k annual surplus. When their card has a 15k credit limit … It makes no sense whatsoever, their calculations are extremely weird and there is no option to appeal the decision. So I'm now stuck with a useless credit enquiry on my file and nothing in return.
Did not have such issues with NAB who accepted me with just 10k surplus last year for their Signature Qantas card.
DO NOT apply for this card unless you really know what you're doing. If you need to pick Westpac, get the Platinum card instead which will still give you 70k points.

    • 20k annual surplus

What do you mean by this, since don't they also judge by frequency and quantity of recent cards applied for and held and not just your credit capacity?

      • I mean net annual income minus spend = almost 20k ;)
Yes they do "judge" by all of that, but it's an automated system, and my credit score is "excellent" anyway on both platforms they use (Illion and Equifax). After I asked for the reason my particular application application was rejected they said exactly that, the gap between spend and income is still not large enough, which I guess means Westpac does have quite tight criteria likely on a similar level as ANZ.
I chose Black btw because I planned to keep the card for longer than a year, such irony.

Also I've had an active Westpac credit card for years, so being an existing customer didn't make a difference for the application either.

        • +1

Wow surprised they actually gave you a specific reason, usually all the banks are pretty mum about it. Oh well sometimes these sort of things happen even even without any obvious reason or logic. Got rejected the first time I applied with both St George and Westpac years back and then they were fine months later when I tried again, had the reverse happen with other banks and so on.
