Im guessing in the near future, car manufacturers will soon start locking a lot of "enhanced" features of their cars behind subscription paywalls.

      The future? It's already started

      • +1

BMW has done this for years. Biggest rort ever hence not replacing the old one with another.

        • Can not agree with you more

    • +6

Did you mean an airbag or airbags? eg. Disable passenger side airbags to save cost?

      • +2

Unlikely to be used for the basic/mandatory safety features, but even features like lane departure warnings etc may be moved to the subscription model.

        • +4

should we remove some chairs to save cost?

          • @bbcw1980: Possibly

          • +1

@bbcw1980: tesla removed the standard charge kit to "reduce" purchase cost, it's now an "optional extra"

        • +4

          Agreed.

I never use my indicator so I don't want to pay for it.

      • Hey! Oh wait that's what they are??

    • +5

But we'll be able to us https://12ft.io/ to remove paywall??

BMW was charging people for heated seats, which got them in the headlines relatively recently. To be honest, unless you're lazy the included features on the Tesla are pretty good (Autosteer, enhanced cruise control, etc). I got a few free months of the enhanced pack and couldn't see the value, others might though.

      • I was extremely happy to get rid of my BMW X5 and haven't back since then !

          almost everyone one $250k+

That's only for their side hustle

    • +5

slowly the model 3 SR is becoming the new Camry. You see them everywhere in shopping centers, in white of course

      • +7

Yeah, but do they have a box of tissues on the rear window shelf?
If not then they are not a real replacement for the Camry!!

    i can't believe that people wait 12 months for a car …

    • +6

      It's sub 3 months now…

    • +2

Why? If you have time to wait, does it matter?

    • +9

Some people I know have waited 24 months for Toyota.

    • +6

I thought this was for a Tesla, not a RAV4/LC300

    • Good things come to those who wait :D

      • Do you mean TOyota price hike?

    • +5

guess what, RAV4 is like 24-36 months wait.

    • +1

    whats enhanced autsopy?

    • +1

I could show you, but you won't like it.

  • +4

    I have FSD. I bought it at $10k. Once it’s L3 it’ll cost $25-30k AUD.
Elon needs to make it so that the owner can make the call if it stays with car or comes with your profile when you sell it.

    • -1

Very good point and it’s the reason why I haven’t bought it yet.

As soon as the feature is account bound then I’m definitely buying it!

      • +1

They won't do it for the same reason you want it.
Buy it for the car that sale is done for what .. 10ish years. Sell it to the person and its 50 years or more (because with self driving you can keep mobile for longer).
If they don't have to ie its not a thing others are doing … they won't do it.

        • +3

Meh, tie it to the account holder and you make the decision to leave Tesla for a new sexy EV manufacturer.

Kinda makes sense to tie it to the account holder in the long term.

    • +12

It's very possible that L3 will never be delivered though, I wouldn't be buying FSD on the assumption that it will.

      • +1

        100%
Ozbargainers shouldn’t buy things not vetted by fellow ozbargainers
Once someone here says tested FSD and is working, do you still own the car bruh 😎

      • +4

even if we get the same level of FSD as in USA it's very very good. I would get that.

      • +2

Not to mention L3 is still not actually full self driving by definition. FSD a.k.a. Full Self Driving ≠ full self driving. Also, Autopilot ≠ autopilot but the name "Autopilot" is not nearly as misleading as FSD I'm gonna let that pass…….

        • -1

Found this: “Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan and S-Class will be the first U.S. models to have SAE Level 3 autonomous driving.”

          https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42672470/2024-mercedes-be…

          • @[Deactivated]: " on compatible thoroughfares."
            Not on all roads.

            • +2

@glenn955: That's what L3 means though, conditional automation. Even L4 may have geofences.

It's not the first time Musk has promised "full self driving by the end of the year" lol and some people still believe him.

              • @Bad Company: Right winger logic, just keep lying, the followers are stupid and gullible

I hear trumps healthcare plan is still 2 weeks away

                • @MrThing: Are you ok?

    • you'd be very optimistic to think they won't gorge more money out of you when L3, if L3 ever arrives

    • +7

I don't think Tesla will achieve L3 with current hardware and software. Or ever.

I predict that Mercedes will beat Tesla to L3 and indeed one day L5.

No hate on Tesla. Nice car etc but not for self driving. Fix the damn auto wipers and lights first Elon. Simples man.

      • -4

I predict cows would fly. Are you saying you expect a car manufacturer to beat a software company at self driving software?

        • Mercedes already released L3 while Tesla is still on L2, so already happened. IMHO L3-L4 is not very useful, it's either L2 or L5.

          • +2

@DmytroP: See this why it is so easy to fool simpletons because all they ever do is read the headline without understanding. Mercedes system works only on mapped roads and they map only highways, so no other roads possible additionally, does not work with sun directly in front, not in the dark, not when raining/fog/snow, not with emergency vehicles or police nearby, only on level tarmac ( no bank angle), only with a vehicle to follow, no lane changes, no on/offramps and only upto 40mph but hey its officially level 3.

Tesla is L2 because they chose to call it L2.

            • +2

@dealsucker: But it's the definition of L3 - it only works in limited conditions, otherwise, you have to drive yourself, but when the feature is engaged you don't have to supervise and look at the road. If the car crashes while on autopilot - Mercedes will be liable. Tesla is not confident enough in its own autopilot to accept liability for failures and allow the person in the driver's seat not to pay attention to the road, even while their autopilot is more advanced than the Mercedes.

              • +1

@DmytroP: Except that you cant bloody use this so called feature because there are 100 limitations and conditions that needs to be fulfilled and even then it doesnt work. It failed while mercedes were demoing the system for heaven sake. And lets say it is your lucky day, stars have aligned and you got the system to work somehow - when are you ever going to drive on a US freeway at 40mph!

It might be a level 3 system but not in the same universe as the Tesla level 2 system which is level 2 because tesla calls it level 2.

            • +1

@dealsucker: Did I understand it right?

Only mapped roads and only mapping highways
              Up to 40mph (65 kmph)

              These… seem incompatible…

              • +1

@sssx: It only works on mapped highways and upto a speed of 40mph so practically useless.

      • +1

Not picking sides - couldn't care less - but I think you're pretty misinformed here!
Watch some YT videos of the actual Self driving experience with other cars. It's not even comparable

        • Ya man. I saw those videos of Mercs and Tesla's but they are all heavily biased.

I base my assessment on the facts that Merc pioneered ABS, stability control and IR forward cameras. They made the first mass produced petrol car. Hell they even brought our the gull wing doors that Tesla copied.

What facts are you basing your assessment on?

          • +1

@Naigrabzo: Which Merc has the same doors as Model X for Tesla to have copied them?

            • -2

@dealsucker: My good (deal)sucker. I would like to take you back to 1952.

              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gull-wing_door

Did you really think Model X doors were original?

              • +1

@Naigrabzo: Are you really that stupid or abusing the privilege today? Tesla doors are powered and they adapt automatically to the space around them aka they have spatial awareness and therefore open accordingly without hitting anything. They are also hinged at two places and not one.

                • @dealsucker: Amazing man. I am amazed.

                  • @Naigrabzo: Ofcourse you are. You are the village idiot.

                    • @dealsucker: Okay dealsuck all good. You da best with ya gullwings.

                      • @Naigrabzo: I have a rock in my garden and it looks exactly like your head. You must be dumb as a rock therefore.

                        • @dealsucker: Nice nice! loving it. Logic FTW!!

I am putting my cards on the table though. I think that Tesla will never achive L5 with current technology. They will be beaten by Merc. Curious to see whether I am right though.

              • +1

@Naigrabzo: I would like to take you back to 1939.

                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gull-wing_door

The papillon door was designed by Jean Bugatti for the 1939 Type 64,[1] 14 years before Mercedes-Benz produced its similar, famous 300 SL gullwing door. The papillon door is a precursor to the gullwing door, and is slightly different in its architecture, but is often overlooked when discussing gull-wing design.

If you think the Tesla "falcon wing" doors are a copy of the Merc "gullwing" doors despite changes and improvements, then I'd suggest the gullwing is a copy of the "papillon doors". +1 point to Bugatti and -1 point to both Tesla and Merc in the L5 race (by your reasoning?)

The other things you mention also don't seem clear-cut original Merc work.

Saying Merc will be first to L5 just because (before some of the competition existed) they were (maybe) first at some (mostly unrelated) things, doesn't seem like very sound logic. Not saying Tesla will beat Merc, or Merc will beat Tesla, but … come on. Are we going to find another company that was first at a bunch of other unrelated things and say they might beat them both to L5?

                • @sssx: I would agree with you on principle.

My logic points to how the Tesla software has remained Beta for many years now while price of that is going up. Even their auto wipers and headlights are struggling to work.

I don't think Tesla will ever achieve L5 at this rate.

Quietly Merc has been working on their self drive tech. My prediction is that it will beat Tesla in the next few years but alas will be out of reach as it will probably be come up in their Maybach or S series vehicles first. Tesla self drive is just all show and no substance.

I disagree the above innovations are not Merc. Especially ABS brakes. They are related to automotive innovation not 'unrelated things'.

There is no reason to believe that everything Tesla does and say will succeed. They are doing well to reduce prices of electric cars, which is what they set out to do. So far profits are also good. Many things are going well for them, but I just think that their trucks and self drive is not going to succeed.

                  • +1

@Naigrabzo: Ignorance is bliss. In your case ignorance plus negative IQ. Can't believe how gullibly stupid you are. I mean being this stupid should be a crime. Please give me another example of a software system that can do this, beta or otherwise

                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvZn09S-Z9g

Is this "all show and no substance" that you are talking about? Mercedes is not even on the same galaxy as Tesla. Where is Mercedes's self designed self driving chip/computer? Where is their data pipeline and how does it work? Where is their auto labelling system? Where is their super computer which is training their neural networks? How are they collecting real world driving data to train their neural networks? Cows will fly before Mercedes can even match what Tesla is doing today.

Forget self driving, they cant even do lane centering properly.

    • Does the car come with adaptive cruise control without Autopilot purchase

      • +2

        yes

        • +1

That’s the only feature I look for in cars nowadays

The other essentials have been made standard

          • +1

@otter-raptor: It will keep in the lane and adjust the speed. Will go striaght through red lights if there is no car in front. Such a time saver! :P

            • +3

@glenn955: Aren't you eyes still suppose to be on the road?

I don't know man, I only use adaptive cruise control on highway.

              • @Ramennightmare: Agree with this. You have to keep eyes on road and hands on steering wheel. I also keep foot ready to emergency break.

      • And not only that it has got the best lane keeping assistant in any car I have ever driven and they keep improving everything via software updates.

        • It is also the best for phantom brakes in Australian conditions.

      • yes but it will phantom break occasionally.
