Bought this a year or so ago for about $680, haven’t installed all four cameras, but it’s great.

Did a bit of search and found on Reolink australia site, RLK8-800B-Acan be discounted to $620 by using code “EOFY23”, what’s the difference between this and op’s one? Just the shape?

      • Yes.

Personally I like the OP looking cameras

        • The same site also seems to have the RLK8-800D4-A turret-style kit as well, same price..

  • +1

Got cheaper from here about a couple of years ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/652565

Right…turning on the flux capacitor now.

    • NVR + 4 D820A

      is better camera?
and what is the difference to this one?

      • 820 is a better camera, higher framerate

        • these are both 4K?

what about the zoom/optical of each cameras?

  • +2

Beware if it’s H265 codec only. Can cause a bunch of compatibility issues with some NVR’s and playback on some devices/browsers. Learnt this the hard way with the annke c800’s

    • +5

This comes with an 8ch NVR

    • +2

You'd prefer to use H264 and get half the capacity? Any playback device manufactured in last few years should be able to view H265.

    • +1

Can't get frigate to work at 8mp due to this but luckily you can downgrade to 5mp in the nvr settings.

Frigate developers say it's a problem with reolink cameras but I'm not sure how it is if this is the only feasible way to get higher resolution.

      • A lot of this is down to the hardware platform..
Since frigate relies on ffmpeg (which can do judt about anything) it shouldnt be a problem as long as your hardware can do hw transcoding.
Basically 7th gen intel should be fine..rpi nope

    • +1

Unfortunately the answer comes down to a mix of how much money you want to throw at the problem and how experienced you are with networking.

If you’re good with networking, these reolink packs can be a good solution since you can block them from phoning home while still having access to them through your home network.

Alternatively you could piece together something with hikvision or dahua and a Synology NAS. Again need a bit of network knowledge needed to ensure they’re not phoning home.

      • Yeah I think reolink is one of the better low cost out of the box options. I've been using some internal standalone reolink camera for about 4 years now with no problems.

      • What do you mean by 'phoning home' ?
I have a HiKVision set up. Actually not that impressed with the system. (8ch NVR with 4TB)
The NVR is difficult to use.
The HiK-Connect app is buggy and slow.
Cameras are supposed to have person/car/animal detection….but, during a storm or any rain, the camera pretty much can't distinguish anything, so saves the entirety of the day or night during this time.
I only had it installed later part of last year and for what is supposed to be a semi commercial set up…. I'm far from impressed.

        • +1

By phoning home I mean random packets of data being sent from the cameras to IPs in China and Taiwan. The packets are most likely just usage data tracking, checking for firmware updates or time syncing, but it has the potential to be an easy back door connection. First thing with network security is physical access is access and this provides a medium for that.

As an example my Dahua cameras when I allow them send encrypted packets to a number of IPs in China about every 30 seconds.

I remember getting mine for $480 about 3 years ago so with inflation considered it's about there

    • Your one wouldn't have ai detection if you're into that.

      • Correct, it didn't have AI detection so this one does have more features. Good pick up.

  • The link shows the model as RLK8-800D4 for me. Any differences between 800 and 820?

    • 820 is the standalone version, 800 is the bundled version. Usually says "requires the Reolink NVR to work" or something to that effect

      • so this won't with PC with blue iris
and will always need the Reolink NVR?

    • the 820 is slightly newer and records at a higher framerate

    • 820 can be used by itself or with NVR. It has an SD card slot to record on the camera and higher frame rate.

  • in terms of mounting them, do they need to be done via electricians so that he can connect to a power source?

    • +1

      They :)

It's power over Ethernet. Only requires network cable install, preferably cat6. Technically you need a qualified electrician to install the cables but I've since added 1-2 cameras myself.

      • if you have a house with insurance, would that void it?
or void the camera warranty if you DIY?

      • -2

You require a structured cabling licence to run cat 6, which is a component of every electrician's training these days as well as a current security licence to install security systems which involves a fee and a police check. If you're installing a system on your own home you aren't required to have said security licence.
You probably don't need an electrician to install it but I would recommend it as they should be able to do it better than you and troubleshoot any issues.

        • I had an extremely uncomfortable time crawling in the ceiling and underhouse doing the cabling. It's not a complex job but it's exhausting physically and on your patience.

    • No it's DIY, all plug and play

  • Thanks Op, was hoping this would get a prime day deal. Have ordered.

The hell you on about man

    • Are you okay?

    • My parents have a Dahua system. I have one of these.

They had some dogs running around their property at night, so we took a look at their cameras. UI is incredibly poor and it was difficult to navigate through the system to find the footage. And then it was a pain to actually extract the footage.

Meanwhile I was accessing my Reolink via my phone and downloading via my phone.

i have reolink … (probably different model) but it's crape even lazer door bell is crystal clear but this one i can't even see face of individual from 5 meter distance clearly… ! I won't recommend this company unless you see demo and clearly see the faces and read car numbers then only it is worth .. !

    • My Reolink outdoor cams are great. Have you got the focus and image quality set right?

      • +1

i got professional to install it and images are not good at all… ! once our neighbour had police incident outside their house covered by my camera and cops said this images are not good and can't be produced in court…. ! and they are really poor … ! I can see objects but when it comes to reading number plate of car or face then it doesn't give clarity at all.. !

i bought RLK8-520D4 model six camera with NVR for $356 USD plus additional $100 AUD for another two camera as NVR system came with four camera only.. ! literally waste money on this one .. !

So, the point i am making is do not rush to buy this or any camera online unless you see image yourself on how they look in reality.. ! my own experience is that for CCTV always go into store pay $100 more if needed but verify that image quality are good then only buy otherwise you wasting money if you can't produce images in the court or cops can't see clearly.. in my opinion.

        • +1

I've got a 4 or 5 year-old reolink camera and pvr system, and the focus is perfectly fine. Maybe something is wrong with yours and you should have claimed it on warranty

          • @mduncan2: how can 6 cameras all be faulty?

Maybe the software codec / encoding / resolution is set too low?

        • Yes, I do agree.
It would be best to see the real images/videos, especially if you are little fussy about the quality.
Their megapixels ratings do not mean much at all!
I used different brands with lower claimed resolution but quality is still better than that particular reolink camera I got, Not that reolink is bad but definitely want to see what the actual real images/video if you are gettting as a security set.

          • @m2000: I actually have reolink installed at my door under the roof covering entrance and at the same entrance I have Lazer doorbell with camera and Lazer gives images 1000 times better than that of reolink even though Lazer one that I bought was I think $10 or $15 … 😂

        • Like all cameras, it depends how far the things are.

If it's a distant event, of course it's gonna look bad with a 4mm lens.

I've also got a Trackmix for this reason, so I can get zoomed images as well as a broader picture.

        • Time to upgrade to Reolink 4K system

  • These are great cameras…but be aware that these bundled cameras don't come with a UID to be able to be used with Google assistant, nor remotely viewed unless they go via the NVR.
Might not be an issue for some, but a pain if you want to be able to view the camera separately from the NVR.

    • so it won't work with blue iris?

can you view the camera footage from the app while not at home?

and how is the footage going to the app?
via VPN, cloud or what method?

      • also interested in more on this, ty

      • -1

You can live view anytime anywhere using the reolink app. Not sure what @Someone1975 is talking about

        • yeah i am interested in how it works when viewing the app

since other cameras need to go through the cloud

    • Bugger - I want this functionality. Do reolink have cameras with this feature?

    • The HiKVision set up I have, can't be viewed on anything other than the HiK-Connect app, connecting to the NVR

    • thanks for brining this point up, i actually didnt realise. can you shed some more light on this UID, am i able to buy it separately for it to work with google assistant?

    • -1

      https://support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013481134-H…
      2nd bullet point…

For clarity…in the bundles, the NVR has the UID. You can still see the cameras remotely but via the NVR.
To add to Google assistant (so "hey Google show me front door camera") each camera will need a unique UID and so the bundled cameras won't work.
Any camera you buy seperately should have a UID, just not the bundled set.

      @MuddyClear…RTFM.

      • but be aware that these bundled cameras don't come with a UID to be able to be used with Google assistant, nor remotely viewed unless they go via the NVR.

False. It can be remotely viewed anytime, anywhere using the Reolink app.

<sigh>…ok..have at it. You're obviously an expert.

  • Thoughts compared to Eufy? such as https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/784157

    Pros eufy:
    - less cables in roof
    - alarm
    - 2 way talk
    - colour night

    Pros reo:
    - almost half the price
    - don't have to charge every 4-5 months

    Cheers

    • Colour images in night time are good to have features unless you are intending to use for day time thief only.. 😂

    • +2

I have the eufy 4 camera kit and doorbell.

Doorbell is great. WiFi cameras are average. Disconnections, takes ages to login/start cameras remotely. Sometimes they run out of battery with no notification.

Good for watching pets while away. Not super great for security.

If I was doing it again I'd get a wired system for sure, but I'll survive on this.

Eufy also got busted for transmitting images unencrypted over the internet. So it's not the best company.

  • These don't have IR LEDs from what I can see

  • +1

I've got this kit, my feedback has been posted before:

Value is great. But it's very annoying that their NVRs do not work with other camera brands. I changed my system to a Reolink system recently, and I have a camera up in the eaves of my 2 storey house that I thought I would just plug in, since it's too damn hard to reach myself. Nope. I'll need to get a tradie in to do that.

Connecting to the NVR can be a bit fiddly/tricky. I found that in order to do this, you must not initialise/log into the camera. Let the NVR detect/connect itself.

App is good and price is good, and there is a wide variety of cameras available. I actually really like my Trackmix PTZ and I wish I could get more without looking like a creepy house with tons of cameras everywhere.

My advice to anyone is to go the 16 channel NVR. I went the 8, and I've found all these different blackspots around the house that I want to cover, and I could do with an extra few channels.

Also bear in mind these are 4mm lenses. I personally do not like 4mm, since I prefer 2.8mm for a more wide angled view. I ended up purchasing additional cameras and I am only using a couple of the RLC-800. Firmware for the NVR does NOT auto update. You have to download manually and update.

  • Is this a good ecosystem to get into? Specially thinking about Reolink's door bell cam along with these cameras for the new house

    • Also, can these be mounted on a wall instead of a ceiling? TIA

    • Depends who you ask. They do have disadvantages but they seem to be good value for money

  • Great deal. Purchased before at $670. Very good system for price point. Reliable so far.
