Not sure about the EV plan but the non-EV plans says you can only have a solar system that is less than 5kw - “Please confirm that your solar system is less than 5kW of solar PV panels. If this is not the case, OVO Energy reserves the right to cancel your application.”

Says only applies to 5kw of PANELS or less

      • No issues signing up with more than 5kw

        • Have you only recently signed up or a while ago? Have you heard anything from them? Wonder if anyone has had a "please explain" your export generation?

          • @danyool: When signing up I was asked how much I exported. I replied with the amount the system generated and I got a “you sure? That doesn’t seem right “ message. So I went through a year’s invoices and totalled the number of kWh sold back into the grid(which was about half of what the system generated) and all was well.

            • @roonie: Cool thanks. I'm getting FB ads for OVO now and notice someone asked in the comments about the 5kW limit and someone from the public replied that they had called as they had 15kw system and were told:

" they said they are honouring all the feed in and were removing the references to up to 5kw system on the website."

That was 2 days ago - so guess they haven't updated that yet (if true)

Not that good rates for us in Melb East, Ausnet. Luckily end up locking till May 24 with Tango before they closed the offer.

    • Tango: ^Daily supply and usage rates are fixed until at least 31st May 2024 provided the network tariff code doesn't change. Excludes feed-in tariffs, demand and other charges. My understanding rate will increase…

      • sorry what u mean, network tariff code is related to your meter isn't it? Plus VIC review occurs in July and this includes that

        • I believe Tango will increase price… It didn't give you absolutely price lock..I signed up with OVO it simply price locked till 2024

          • @lw1987321: Hmmm…Okay. OVO didn't have good rates for us anyway.

There is a big connection and disconnection fee of $84.43 though

    • NSW is so expensive compared to other states

    • same

There is a big connection and disconnection fee of $84.43 though

The connection and disconnection fees are not applicable when you are changing retailers. I've never paid these fees in the past 20 years moving from property to property etc or changing retailers.

They only apply when you are moving into a new build/house that was disconnected for some reason or want to renovate the house and need to disconnect the power. The fees are also generally dictated by the network providers, the retailer (i.e. OVO) just pass on the cost to you.

  • Impossible to sign up. No call backs have been available for weeks.

    • You can sign up online without the call, but yeah the sales team is pretty backed up if you want to talk first.

      • +3

They only opened the plan up to online sign up recently. Before you had to wait for a call back for sign up for the EV plans. Other plans were online though. Good that it has now moved to online too.

        • Yep, I had a call scheduled and they cancelled it and told me online sign up was available.

No option to retain the appointment, which I wanted because I wanted to know if a Plugin hybrid was an EV for the plan

    • OVO's fixed tariff was much better for me @ 34.28c/kWh and supply at 79.75c/day on Endeavour in Sydney, for a low usage house (2-3 kWh per day) with solar.

    • Same for me, what’s the best plan you finding?

      • I just completed my move to Red Energy. Around $90 savings per month compared to AGL.

  • +2

Hey OP how do I get your prices? My peak double what you have quoted?

Also where does it say locked in for year, can’t find that anywhere?

    Thx

    Mine in NSW ausgrid :

    • Rates vary between distributors, looks like he is in VIC..

I cannot find the fixed rate either.

Not bad however my rates are locked til September with lumo. Hopefully prices stay the same or is it possible to delay connection when signing up

    • rate locked ≠ you are locked in the plan

      • +1

Sorry meant to clarify that I have really good rates locked in so may not be wise to switch over just yet

        • yes be careful I had email from Lumo to move which I did…my locked rayes expires in Aug with them

    • +1

Already got the memo from Lumo as mine ends up in August. It's gonna double up. Possibly more as the Lumo rep. I spoke to mentioned there's another hike in 1st August.

      • Oof might do the same then

  • Note that OVO is a fixed term contract

      With no exit fees, btw.

    WASSUP PEEPS,

Any one in Canberra with tips for best providers. I am getting sick of Origin… :)

    • +1

You got solar? You got a battery? Most days I buy zero kW/hr and just pay for the supply charge only, which is discounted by the FIT

      • I have solar no battery. I haven't had any bills for the last 3 years but no starting to get an electricity bill, which has shocked my ozbargain heart to the core.

I buy about 10kwh per day.

In the ACT not as much choice AFAIK.

  • +3

My monthly charging expense is <$50 and OVO normal rate is meh.

Looking at https://energylocals.com.au/ for my next jump as the rate is really good if you use a lot.

  • Other fees
    Disconnection fee
    $205.11

Is this even legal??? 200$ to disconnect

    • but it only happens when you move in and out? so just jump to somewhere else when that's about to happen.

    • +3

this will be when you want to disconnect from grid like rebuilding the house they will come out to disconnect and remove the meter

  • +5

Not including your state makes this hard to understand if it’s a deal, since for many those rates are unobtainable.

  • Don't forget your $70 shop back. That's 3 months of free power for me

    • +1

the referral $120 is better imo. These don't stack.

      • -1

When i signed up 2 months ago I got $108 shop back (did it through the shop back comparison site) and I also got $190 welcome credit (paid monthly) since then a few people have signed up with my referral code. I wont pay for electricity for years.

Today you can do the same, however its $70 shop back and $120 welcome credit. Just don't use a referral code.

        • could you please provide more information about the welcome credit? is it the same with $12 pm referal?

        • Hi Jac, Does the welcome credit show in the contract?
I signed up through ShopBack, and can see $190 on the website but it’s not mentioned anywhere in the contract.

          • @Garrettau: You get it monthly as a credit to your bill. If you have a bill yet you'll see it more clearly there.

  • +1

Drake really out there diversifying his portfolio, huh? SIX SIX SIX

  • +2

The title is wrong, it's literally one hundred times as expensive as this post claims. It's not 0.08c/kwh, it's 8.0c or $0.08. 0.08 cents is less than a tenth of a cent.

    It says so here:
    https://pages.ovoenergy.com.au/the-ev-plan

    Still really cheap.

  • Whats everyones thoughts on the 'The One' Plan?

Sounds sorta like a Novated Lease

    • do they need advanced payment for the whole year? if so then take extra care as you never know if they last a year from now

      • nah seems like they guesstimate your costs and then average out over a year so its a flat rate each month..

Eg more expensive in Winter, but cheaper in Summer.

        • ahh.. that's not too bad…

          • @HD9990: Plus they pay interest on amounts in credit.

        • All their plans have bill smoothing and pay interest on credit. It's a good way to do it. Don't just take their word for it either, they estimated mine would be $60pm based on area averages. Once I showed them my actual bills they dropped it to $20pm.

  • What is going on in Doreen Vic… Here's my rates. WTF, is this the highest in the country?

    Peak (¢/kWh): 50.384

    Off Peak (¢/kWh): 24.248

    EV charging window (¢/kWh): 8

    Supply charge (¢/day): 125.4

      @snackpacket
Also with Ausnet, Same price as you
Surprisingly next door neighbour without solar is 15c cheaper, other neighbour with solar is same as me.
Checked random Non solar houses, they are cheaper.

So we getting penalised for having solar!

      Is that even legal
Can you check houses around you without solar?

  • +3

Ausnet has gotta be the worst grid to be in

    Electricity
    Prices inclusive of GST
    Peak (¢/kWh): 50.384
    Off Peak (¢/kWh): 24.248
    EV charging window (¢/kWh ): 8

Ausnet is the worst grid operator i've dealt with to date.

  • how to have the price locked in for 12 months? the 8 cents mid nite charging is awesome!

  • I am done with AGL. I went back to Amber Electric after finding the 6 month free Amber subscription (requires a commbank credit card/account) for a savings of $114.00. https://www.commbank.com.au/latest/partnerships/amber-electr…

    Unit rate: $0.2672/kWh

    NSW
    Unit rate: $0.3428/kWh

    Solar export: $0.10/kWh
    EV charging: $0.08/kWh

    QLD
    Unit rate: $0.2933/kWh
    Supply Charge: $0.935/day
    Solar export: $0.10/kWh
    EV charging: $0.08/kWh

    SA
    Unit rate: $0.4071kWh
    Supply Charge: $1.062day
    Solar export: $0.10/kWh
    EV charging: $0.08/kWh

    • Comes up with the following for me in SA (Time of use):
      Unit rate: $0.43/kWh
      Solar Sponge: $0.2638
      Supply Charge: $1.3145day
      Solar export: $0.10/kWh
      EV charging: $0.08/kWh

So, for doing the right thing for the grid and getting a smart meter, we get boned with an exhorbitant daily supply charge. If anyone had an old dumb meter, I say hang on to it for as long as possible.

      • The rate slightly change if you remove the EV charging option.

        • Yes, the rate goes down a bit, but the daily supply charge seems to stay the same. If you choose the solar plan, the daily charge goes up another 26c..!

          • @noz: will change to solar in summer. Just half an hour per day will pay that extra surcharge.

  • Signed up with Ovo. I don't have EV but are offering best rates possible for my area and usage. Advantages too Melbourne based call centre and locked rates till 1 aug 24.

  • Should I just request EV plan after applying the ONE plan?

    • -1

Apparently they check for EV ownership and also need smart metering to measure EV charging.

  • EV plan (pre-paid) for SEQ not so good. At least for me:
    Fixed: 115.5c/day
    Peak: 29.086c/kWh
    Off-peak: 8c/kWh
    Demand: 15.236c/kW/day
    FiT: 10c/kWh

FiT and off-peak is not bad, but the rest is better with nectr. Particulary the demand charge. Basically adds at least 60c to the supply chart for an average user that cooks meals in the evening.

  • I also signed up with Ovo recently after Energy Australia price gouging of 102% in 8 months

  • -2

For the ev rates, you need an ev (obviously) and a smart meter. Meaning the whole house isn't discounted to 8c/kw only the power supplying the ev

    • +1

No the smart meter requirement is for time of use. You’ll be able to run anything at that time.

    • wrong!

  • This the same OVO that did mobiles?

  • I’m with Nectr (grandfathered, locked til May 2024) currently paying:

    General usage 23.87
    Supply charge 82.5
    FIT 4.4

    Checked OVO:

    General usage 35.772
    Supply charge 95.7
    FIT 14 (first 4000kWh p/a) then 7 (remaining 3840kWh p/a)

    Looks like:

summer, clearly OVO will be a winner
($3.50 export daily, $.50-$1 daily usage + $1 daily charge)

winter ($2.50-$4.50 daily usage + $1 daily charge)

    • it’ll quickly creep up! Hard to work out a better overall offer, even using Wattever.
  • Anyone in SA on the grandfathered 44 c/kwh gov subsidised FIT signed up with OVO?

Do you get the retailer 10c/kwh on top like the other energy retailers? (Was on Alinta getting 44 + 8c/kwh, but their rates are one of the worst after the july increase and I have an EV)

  • VIC - United Energy

    OVO -

    Peak (¢/kWh) - 30.47
    Off Peak (¢/kWh) -17.16
    Supply charge (¢/day) - 99c

    AGL -

    Peak (¢/kWh) - 32.538
    Off Peak (¢/kWh) -21.04
    Supply charge (¢/day) - 85.426c

  • +1

Does anyone have comments on 'bill smoothing' and whether or not it's good to have?

    • Yes if your cash flow isn't great. It's just about pre-paying fixed amount every month or so to avoid any bill shock.

    • I would also like to know about this too.

    • It was good a couple of years ago when I was with Ovo. They were paying 3% interest on credit, and since I have solar my credit went up to $1000 in 12 months.

      • Are you still with OVO?

        • No, the rates were no longer competitive

  • Sorry electricity noob here (finally moved out of parents home). Do you pay high season and low season demand charges on top of peak rates?

    • Not sure what's that. Usually rate consists with daily charge + usage charge.
usage charge comes in 3 ways:
single rate = the same rate 24/7
time of usage (TOU) rate = peak and offpeak
controlled load (CT) rate = offpeak discount for certain device only e.g) hot water

      • This was my quote for context:
        Peak (¢/kWh)
        31.752

        High Season Demand
        10.956

        Low Season Demand
        3.828

        EV charging window
        8

        Supply charge (¢/day)
        108.24

        • +1

Right, so it should give you the months of high and low season. I imagine summer is the high season. So in those months the Demand charge means whatever your peak demand was during that billing period was, you multiply that by the charge and days in the month and that's added to the bill.
So say your peak demand in Summer was 5kW during the period and the period was 90 days. You would add 5*10.956c*90 to your bill. So an extra $50 or so in this example.

But the risk with them is that if you had a particularly high demand on a day in the month (say 8kW) when you were running AC and cooking dinner in the oven and stovetop, that gets bumped up to around $80.
I generally assume about 5kW and add it on top of the daily supply charge as a rough estimate.

          • @NigelTufnel: Ahhh got it - so it is by kw and by day. It looks like it is a few months in the year where it is high season and low season the rest. Thanks so much for the explanation - very helpful!

    • It depends on your tariff, it varies.

You can request to change the tariff every 12 months.
