Best deal would be to buy myer gift cards which are on special until tomorrow http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/78547 and then get myer to price match, temped to do this and then claim gst back on my upcoming overseas trip and then claim as a tax deduction.

    • Does that mean I will get more $160 off when using Myer gift card, is that right? You have to ask first that they do price match.

    • thinking the same here, are you going to try it tomorrow? myer card promo ends tomorrow

      • just wondering if anyone's succeeded in getting Myer to price match dickies and then paying with gift card?

        • Yup - success (well almost!) Myer had a new Macbook Air 13/256GB at $1689, while Dick Smith had it listed at $1510.10 with their promo.

Myer (Adelaide) wouldn't match completely - best they'd do was $1549. So, I bought $1400 worth of gift certificates ($1540 value) and gave them an extra $10 cash. End result - $1410 for a $1689 laptop .. happy times :)

Excellent timing Dick Smith! I'm going to try my luck tomorrow and buy dad a macbook for Father's Day. Just a head's up, depending on the Myer Apple sales assistant, sometimes it can be really hard to get a price match. Perhaps make sure you can get the price match first before buying Myer gift cards to pay for the item, just in case it doesn't work out. I was at Myer for well over half an hour arguing with the SA when I purchased my iPad about their price matching policy. In the end I got it for almost the same price, but still a few dollars dearer. Unfortunately I couldn't walk out that time as I had Myer gift cards to spend…
    Thanks OP!

Absolutely. With ALL stores never disclose the gift card use BEFORE agreeing upon a price. They will know in advance that you are tied to dealing with them, so why give away more than they need. As you found out in the end as they didnt fully price match.

      See http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/pricematch

Sorry but how is a $1000 spec'd machine for $1800 a bargain. Oh wait, it's got an apple logo on it, lets pay $800 for that.

Can you show any similar spec machines for $1000

        Inspiron 15R SE
        http://www.dell.com/au/business/p/inspiron-15r-se-7520/fs

Has full HD screen, DVD writer (#!@#@!, full HD screen.. come on Dell, just put in a Blu-ray ROM now they are less than $55 each). I believe the $1800 MBP is not the retina display one.

Not that I will buy either Inspiron 15R or Apple MBP 15" (more due to lack of cash - as I have bought too many unneeded items thanks to OzBargain).

        Notes:

        • I did not even need to try hard. Did not even need to google.
        • With Windows 8 about to be released to the public, I am expecting PC and Laptop firesales coming up.
    • This is the finishing work process and you never known that. How could you find what company they are trying to finishing their hardware and software at the same place? I have been using windows for all my life and I am still using it. I used to be hater like you are. Once you have a chance to try, you never felt sorry.
I do need OSX for my develop work. I don't like to learn how to make hackintosh system.

I think the key point is that these Mac desktops and laptops are still a collection of products from Intel (CPU, chipset, maybe GPU), Samsung (RAM, SSD, LCD), Foxcomm (motherboard, designed by Apple - probably enhanced version of the reference design provided by Intel), and possibly LG (LCD - alternative supply) and Toshiba (alternative supply for SSDs).

The exterior case may appear to be more stylish and the operation system may be easier to use. Is it worth 40% extra than the PC equivalent with comparable parts? It could be yes and it could be no depending on people.

I have Apple products… so yes, I do pay Apple tax (or taxes since I have multiple devices). Not proud of it and not entirely happy about the price, but I guess sometimes when you really want something, you are willing to pay more.

      • I'd say the build quality is definitely worth it. I've got heaps of Dells (work and for my *nix notebooks) and while they're definitely good bang for buck, the build quality is abs piss poor. Apple's QA seems to be extremely good, probably because of the extreme lack of diversity in terms of builds and product lineup.

That said, I just cannot justify an iMac, an excess for sure. A hackintosh (for OSX fanboys) or a Windows desktop gives considerably more oomph for the buck with potentially better build and specs. My desktop is a sub 2K machine that I've been using for almost 2.5 years now and performs better than iMacs 2x the price (OC'd 4Ghz CPU, 16Gb RAM, Intel 520 SSD for OS, Spinpoint F3 RAID-0, Asus DCU II GTX 670). For folks who are looking at something that is all style or whatever, the entry level iMac may have some value, but the top of the line iMacs just don't make sense to me (IMHO).

  • Please note in the title that this excludes iPads.

  • U can get another 5% if u know someone who works in wollies..
    15% sounds great

  • Just got a MBA price matched and bought with a Myer gift card, $200 off from RRP, couldnt happier.
