I have a pair of these. They're very comfortable even on my grotesquely large head and the sliding earcup design makes me think they're going to be more robust than most other models.

Features:

  • Noise cancellation (which I haven't really used so I can't critique it)
  • Leather cups (really really comfortable)
  • Pairs with two devices

They used to be up in the $400-$500 range, but they've been superseded by the Momentum 3. I've been pretty happy with them, and now that they're cheaper I bought a second pair for one of my kids.

  • Oooo the 3's.
I was wanting those over the 4's because you can still disable Noise Cancellation on them.

    • I have the 4's pretty sure it has both modes

      • Thats a recent firmware update then, the official response from Senn, and all the users on Reddit confirm that there is no way to disable it on the 4's.
Perhaps they finally caved to the requests.

        • Oh, wow. It was annoying enough to me that you had to manually disable it every time on my Bose QCs. Not being able to disable it at all is a definite dealbreaker. I'd happily buy headphones without nose cancelling, but all the good ones include it. Basically never use it unless I'm on a flight.

          • +3

            @MrMcHairyHead: Flights are pretty smelly

          • @MrMcHairyHead: Yes. My wife has the sony xm4 phones and i find the noise cancelling too good. It's actually annoying. I mean great for the bus or on a plane, but anywhere where you need to be even slightly aware of your surroundings i think they're terrible.

  • +1

I use these for watching movies. Great price. Also they support aptX low latency (assuming your transmitter does too)

  • +9

    They’re price matching JB

    • +2

Thanks, just grabbed a pair there.

    • +1

Thank you for mentioning thisI had an Amex deal so got another $30 off and also JB are doing free Uber delivery so i should get it in couple of hours. Only thing is that i did not need another headphone.
Edit - got mine delivered already and first impressions are good.

    • +1

Thanks. Also got a pair from JB and finally used a $100 voucher I've had for ages.

  • +1

These have better sound quality than the bose qc35. My favourite feature that the qc35 have over them is that you can wear them and lay your head on a pillow. And the qc35 have better battery life

    • +2

Genuine question; why can you lay on a pillow with these and not the QC35?

      • Sorry I mean that I lay down with the QC35 and not the momentums. The Momentums are a fair bit wider and the headband protrudes and is much narrower than the cup, and then has another nodule outside of the headband so I'd worry about damaging it.

Don't get me wrong, I love both but I just wont sleep with the momentums on, something that most wouldn't care about lol

        • I can’t imagine sleeping with my QC35s lol, but I guess I’ll have to try before I judge!

  • Can anyone advise how these sound with an Apple TV 2022 in regards to sound quality and audio sync.
RTINGS shows a high IOS Bluetooth latency compared the the new Momentum 4, so would like to know how this translates to the Apple TV. I will only be using these for watching TV paired directly to the Apple TV box.

    https://www.rtings.com/headphones/tools/compare/sennheiser-m…

    • +1

Sound quality notwithstanding, Airpods work brilliantly with Apple TV.

you can hook up two pairs of Airpods to ATV, which would eb great, but we have only one pair of Airpods….we simply use one ear each. One of us can go to the kitchen and still hear what's going on.

They also do the 'directional' thing where if you turn your head either way, it sounds like the audio is still coming from the TV.

      edit: mine are Airpods 3

  • Are you able to charge and use these AT THE SAME TIME?

I have a set of QC45's that dont allow this and it annoys the hell out of me.

    • Yes you can

  • +2

    Paid $299 2 weeks ago…

    • +2

Same, still in box, wonder if i can return them.

Actually new unused in box can refund within 30 days…

      • -1

Yeah had a quick chat with them. Can return for $7 :)

      • If it was a small diff I wouldn't bother, but tempting for nearly $100.
I gave them a chance to streamline my refund process…

        • Assume you have to go into store to process a refund and then purchase?

          • @Ostrich: Amazon return

            • +1

@jackwilk: Oh, i ordered mine from JB but just returned to store tonight for price delta match.. all pretty easy!

  • +4

Hell of a deal. I much prefer Momentums to Bose/Sony

    • +1

Their sound quality (out of the box) is pretty amazing.

  • +8

Decent headphones, but i'd be slightly hesitant to recommend them.

    Cons:

    • Cursed USB device - doesn't charge with a 100w cable
    • Autoplay/pause is annoying - maybe the sensor isn't the best (could be specific to my set)
    • Likely not as good as the more mainstream offerings in terms of practicality and travel
    • You can pinch yourself on the hinge. I laughed at the comment on a previous deal, but recently did it by accident and, my god, it hurt.
    • Carry case isn't as good as others

    Pros

    • Can't go past them in terms of build quality - leather/steel
    • Decent sound (considering the compromises for the type of product)
    • +1

I’ve had no issues with charging, several cables and chargers.

The auto pause/play problem weirdly is solved by waiting a few seconds between unfolding them and putting them on, at least for me. Calibration of the sensor I guess.

Battery isn’t great compared to competitors, nor is the noise cancelling (but they get the job done on both fronts).

But, they’re comfortable, and to my ears sound far nicer than their Sony or Bose competitors.

      • 100w or 5A cables?

        • I experienced some chargers (usually GaN tech ones) couldn't recognise Momentum 3 properly. Change it to an Apple Charger or Lenovo charger (even with PD) will work perfectly.

          • @sicaboy: It doesn't matter what charger I use - Apple, Satechi, Belkin, etc. If I use a 100W cable, it won't charge. This is documented elsewhere online.

            • @ihfree: Thanks, good to know it. Since I used my Macbook charger and Lenovo 96w charger both worked. But not working on couple of GaN chargers, I thought it caused by the charger.

            • @ihfree: You've just solved a long running issue i had with my other pair.. always wondered why some cables would work and others wouldnt.

          • @sicaboy: I have the same issue with my AKG headphones. Mac charger wont charge them.

    • You can turn off auto-pause if you like using the app. I did.

Yeah the cloth case feels cheap and gets dirty easily.

      • I disabled auto-pause too.

        • I also disabled auto pause

    • You won't get better sound anywhere near this price point. I haven't heard the current version, but have read that the sound quality is slightly inferior compared to Momentum 3, while still much better than the usual suspects like Sony and Bose.

      Another con is battery life.

    • Cons:

Cursed USB device - doesn't charge with a 100w cable

Thats not a con, that's a safety design to protect the delicate circuitry from overvolt/wattage.

      • … or missing circuitry/components to properly negotiate required wattage.

My old headphones and current earphones all charge without issue from a 100w cable on 60-140w chargers.

    • Sounds is more than decent

  • the sliding earcup design makes me think they're going to be more robust than most other models.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. The problem with this design is that it becomes loose over time, which forces you to tighten them more to compensate. This mechanism can gradually fail causing the earcups to move too easily. The same problem can happen with AKG K361/371 headphones too. Standard ratcheting adjustable headbands are more reliable IMO.

    • +1

Mine felt too loose since day one, I fixed it by putting an o-ring between the raised bit and the bit it slides against ( here's a photo if my explanation is too bad ). Solved the problem instantly and you don't even notice they're in there.

  • +3

I need to stop buying headphones.
But would these be better than my Sony WH-1000XM3's?

    • +7

      Better sound quality
      Better looks and materials

      Worse battery
      Worse noise cancelling

      • Yeah the Sony need to tweak the eq to make the sound better.

The sennies are better out of the box

    • +2

I need to stop buying headphones.
….I totally agree. Made sense perhaps during Covid, but I don't know why I still need to buy another pair. Makes no rational sense given that we all probably have great ones already. Very addictive.

  • Thanks. Now it's even more of a dilemma, as I don't care about looks, but care about sound quality. Am thinking of whether I need new (separate!) headphones for watching tv, because I couldn't possibly use one pair for different purposes.

    • +3

For most people I don’t think it’s $209 better sound quality over what you already have. I prefer it but if you can’t say specifically anything that bothers you about the XM3’s sound signature I wouldn’t worry about it.

    • These have great subbass, making them perfect for watching movies.

  • +1

How is the mic for zoom calls on these? I got the qc45s in a recent deal and the mic is terrible

    • Would love to know, considering picking these up for office use.

    • Really? That hasn’t been the case for me. My work used MS Teams and it’s been awesome. So good to be cord-free. No complaints from other parties on my calls.

      • Yeah, originally thought it was just the ones I got so had them swapped for a new pair. Same issue, maybe it's just because they were comparing the quality to my current headset which has the mic near my mouth

        • Could be, hey. I went from crappy work issued Plantronics to the QC45 so has been a step up for me in terms of sound and no negative feedback so far from people on receiving side. Only downside is they don’t work when charging.

    • I found the mic to be a bit muffled and not great mic noise cancelling. Paid 399

      • QC45 or this M3?

  • Images I think shows a 3.5mm port?

    Can anyone confirm?

I need cable when connecting to a mixer but like BT when connected to my Mac/iPhone.

    • Yes they have an analog jack (actually 2.5mm so you need an unusual cable, which is included). They don’t work without charge even when plugged in, though.

    • It only has 2.5mm port. but comes with a 2.5 to 3.5 cable out-of-box

  • +1

Really like the sound on these, but I have all sorts of trouble listening to audio over BT with them. Not sure if there's a signal quality issue with my PC, but I tend to just plug them in using a usb cable as otherwise I get some nasty crackling (which defeats the purpose of going wireless)

    • Ohh then it’s a no go for me.. guess I’ll wait for Sony or Bose to go on sale

  • I had the momentum II set in ivory and loved them. Wore them out. Got the Momentum 4 about 8 months ago and not really a fan. Not as comfy, and just connecting and battery life is a bit nuffy. I'll probably get these and gift my current set to family.

  • +1

I think there is typo in the description.

but they've been superseded by the Momentum 4

  • +7

I have these since 2020 I think (just checked Amazon, bought them in Feb 2021), got them soon after they released.

I have used them quite a bit for work (zoom and apple MacBook) with no issues with the mic or sound quality at all.

But more importantly, these are my go to gaming headsets. I bought a USB C aptx transmitter that I plug I to ps5 or switch and they are pretty awesome. No mic support on this mode (although I think you could use ps5 controller mic), just for single player games. For multiplayer and mic support, just bought a 2.5mm to 3.5mm cable with Integrated mic on one end and problem solved.

I really like how they sound, but have to say after 3 years the battery life is kinda bad. If you don't mind charging them once or twice a week when you finish gaming or working then it's not a problem.

    Cons:
    - battery is worse than the qc35 which I also own
    - the (profanity) hinge. Watch your fingers or your kids fingers!
    - the 2.5mm connector needs a small mod as it has a tiny piece of plastic that force you to insert and twist the connector.
    - they are big even when folded, Bose's are better for light travelling. I even replaced the travel case for a simple soft carrying bag from my old Sony headphones.

    Pros:
    - awesome sound for the price
    - bt aptx LL
    - great for gaming single player games with the right transmitter
    - build quality is excellent
    - after 3 years of continuous use they look like new still.

  • I think they are the last model noise cancelling headphone with genuine leather under $1,000

    • The Bowers and Wilkins models also have genuine leather. I have had the Momentum 3, B&W PX7, and Momentum 4, the sound of the 4 is the best of the bunch and battery life is twice everything else at 60hrs. Genuine leather is nice, but I'm not really missing it.

  • superseded by Momentum 4

on a side note, "premium build" and all, should I consider these if I currently have B&W PX7?

    • No, both M3 and PX7 have pretty average noise cancelling, the M4 is much better than either. In saying that, for $200 this is a bargain, they sound great, they are built like absolute tanks, and some noise cancelling is better than none.

  • How would these compare to my Bose 700s - Just got them during early Prime deal for $309.

    • +1

700 has a better noice cancelling, lighter and the battery last longer.
While Momentum 3 has a better sound quality, build quality/material.

      • Super on the fence with this deal since I have the 700s for on the go (mic is superb) + I'll consider buying a sheep skin replacement pads so I can use them for gym without destroying the pads. But at home I'm using the turtle beach stealth 700 gen 2 and the earpads make your ears an oven even in winter so I can imagine that's a straight up upgrade for home use.

  • +1

Looking for any feedback using these with Microsoft teams? Had some over ear sonys sound really bad due to lack of codecs don’t want to suffer same issue of poor teams meetings

    • +2

These do not have great microphones so you will sound like a tin can to others in the meeting. That is one of many areas where Momentum 4 are greatly improved.

  • How are these for people that have a large head? I find most headphones don't fit me properly.

    • My head is pretty big….60 something hat size. I found these very comfortable.

  • +1

Bought a pair of these a year ago…great sound, and excellent build. I even don't mind the ANC.

However…from the get-go they were "Power-off….power-on…power-off" just randomly while wearing them. I have a return on them, but haven't had the time to package and send back yet. Now they don't turn on at all, so I'd better get them back to Sennheiser. I did reset etc…but no change to the behaviour.

I really loved them aside from this rather major issue though. Did I just get unlucky? Anybody else have this issue?

Outstanding cans at this price…just crazy.

    • It's a bit too sensitive. IIRC, the new firmware (upgradable from the app) has some improvement, or you can directly disable auto-pause in the app.

      • Yeah…I already disabled auto-pause early on. This is completely powering off…though won't power on at all now…so…switch maybe is dodgy.

2 years warranty…so I'll send them back. Aside from that issue though, I loved them so much that I kind of want to jump on this deal :)

  • Had these for about 6 months now. Definitely wouldn't say they're comfortable for long periods of use - but my daily driver is the sennheiser hd598.

    • A bit off topic, just wondering how the HD598 compares to HD599?

    • Unrelated, but do you find the 598s earpads have gotten very soft over time? And it seems quite hard to find replacements.

      • Yep they sure have

      • Hey, Dekoni pads available at Addicted to Audio, or cheapies available at AliExpress. I haven't bothered replacing my 598 cs pads but will need to soon

        • I'll have a look, thanks.

  • +4

Paid $600 for the 2.0 back in 2016. Still going strong.

  • What do you do once the battery starts dying on these (or any other wireless headphones)?

    • Get your McGyver on.

    • +1

Sadly, there isn't a good alternative to BT/ANC. I have tried some wired headphones with a FiiO BTR5 and have found that ANC is required in many situations. Cables and clips are just annoying when you want to get things done.

Realistically, wireless headphones are a disposable item. Your options are -

      • use them cabled(USB-C or analog in this case)
      • e-waste
      • sell for parts
      • heat gun + spudgers and replace the battery
      • Ugh. I was hoping that there was some long term serviceability these days from the manufacturers. $300-400 disposable electronics isn't really my thing.

In the past I've found businesses that will crack open and replace cells cheaply and well, but it's not something I'd want to make a habit of doing myself on a regular basis. I do have to replace the 18650s on a massage gun soon, but that's probably easier than cracking open precision headphones.

    • +1

Use them as normal headphones, their sound signature is great!

Also, Senns have the ability to replace the batteries from what I understand, check their site to find out, but I think you can replace it with: https://www.amazon.com.au/Replacement-Sennheiser-Momentum-Wi…

  • If active noise cancelling and battery is important, consider the 4

  • +1

Keep getting failed to add item to cart on my phone. "Says" there is still stock but maybe it's run out?

  • Get these or the Sennheiser HD 450BT for $198

What's the battery life like got a 17hr flight on Sunday need something

    • The battery won't last and neither will this deal.

    • I'd take these over the 450bt and I'd probably take Bose/Sony/4th gen over these if flying frequently.
