Non-Members can Shop & Pay In-Store with a Costco Gift Card (Membership Required to Buy Gift Card) @ Costco

2620

Good morning everyone! I didn't know this [hack] existed. I am not a Costco Member, so I have found this information useful.

So a Member can "gift" you a Gift Card and apparently Non Members can visit Costco without Membership and use the Gift Card.

I haven't seen this posted anywhere. I thought it's useful information for people like me that don't have a Membership.

Shop Cards can only be purchased in a warehouse by current members.
At this point, Australian cards can only be used in Australian warehouses, excluding all fuel stations, food court self-serve kiosks and any eCommerce transactions.

Just in time to buy my coffin. Cheers

    • +2

      Oh no!! Don't say that!

      • +53

Why not, its in my will,

Failure to provide Costco basic coffin, will mean that all inheritances will be void, and perpetual ghosting will be initiated.

        • +2

I think you meant spooking not ghosting.

          • +3

            @Trishool: haunting ?

          • +7

@Trishool: I'll start ghosting everyone I know when I die.

"The person you are calling cannot accept calls at this time…"

    • +12

that's the last thing you'll need

      • Pretty sure you'll still need to do your tax.

    • Seek and you shall find 😉

  • +2

It’s regularly mentioned in Costco threads on here.

    • +93

I had no idea of this hack.

      • +7

        Same

      • +18

Same. I come here all the time and first time I've heard of this hack. I think I see the title "Costco" and just skip.

      • Me neither

    • +3

Add me to the list, i had no idea either… Costco only just built a store 30 mins from me.. this may come in handy. Thanks op

    • +7

I think people who are not costco members will glaze over those posts entirely so won't see the 'hack', this standalone deal about the hack is a good thing for visibility.

    • -1

      Prove it!

    • This hack has been popular on tiktok for a while and also on like 7 news

Even longer than that, basically since Costco gift cards have been in existence.

I had an expired Costco membership in the US and it still let me purchase Costco gift cards for quite some time, that loophole I'm sure is closed now

“Nonmembers, as well as members, may use Costco Shop Cards to shop at any Costco location in the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico, as well as online at Costco.com and Costco.ca,” the site reads.

  • +2

Just saw this 2 days ago.

    • +27

Usually I don't check comments on Costco deals because I don't see a point since I am not a member. Probably that's why I had no clue up to today.

    • Someone from theat post thread said "Just called the warehouse and they confirmed its the Casula store only!"

      Why only Casula store?

      • Newest store that just recently opened.

      • casula store had a free entry day for nonmembers on saturday

  • Do you have to use the gift card as payment or do you just have to show it then pay with other methods?

    • You have to use the gift card.

      • +2

        How to buy their gc?

        • you can’t only a member can buy a gift card for you

      • +2

How about mixed payments? If gift card does not have enough value, can I mix it with card payments?

        • -2

          Yes obviously

        • +4

Non members can only use the gift card as payments.

        • +8

Went to Ringwood about a week ago. Asked the customer service desk as we didn't have much left on the GC and they said can paying remaining balance of the purchase by any other means.

          • +2

@mightyhawks23: Yep can confirm that in SA. Recent rule change means that eg you have purchases totaling $150 and GC is $100 you can finish mauling on other method. You can ask to keep the gift card after purchase so that the member dan “top it up”.

        • Has the same thought.
They might force you to join as a member as a result.
It all depends on the Manager on the day.
I've had my international members card confiscated while fueling up….even after I just did a shop

        • yes you can do mixed payments as i’ve asked online at costco information and they said you can split payments

    • +1

      Depends on the worker imo

I’ve had instances where the cashier let me pay without the gc when I told them there’s only $25 on there

  • What are the limitations?

    • +7

Limitations, I think to find someone that it's a member to "gift" you a Costco gift card?

      • +4

Can you get in with a gift card and buy another gift card there?

        • +6

No, have to show membership when buying giftcard.

      • How long is the expiry on the gift cards? Could you load up, then not pay your subscription for a few years ?

      • Limitations

Such as: is the card only valid for one entry or they check the amount of money on it?

    • The amount of your gift card?

  • +4

    Part payment okay?
    Lowest denomination?
    Does price protection, etc apply?

    • +11

      yes
      $25
      no

      • whabbout Split payments//opting to pay with a specified amount of the gc?

  • +2

Can gift cards be used incrementally, for instance, if you have a $100 gift card but your cart only comes up to $40, then, will the gift card retain a balance of $60, meaning you could come back again?

Alternatively if there’s insufficient funds on the gift card for the full shop, can you pay the remaining balance with another card?

    • +2

      Yes to both

      • +1

what about paying the rest of the funds on eftpos? Is that fine too?

  • I was rushing on Saturday, that i had forgotten to pick one up!

  • +3

Most of my good feel saves are from fuel…. Can u use gift cards on fuel? If not , I can’t make use of this.

    • +1

On the link, that's on OP it says can not be used on fuel.

    • +7

      No.

Costco runs automated fuel dispensers for their service stations, and they have not been configured to accept Costco gift cards.

When I think about it, it is unusual for a service station to accept their gift cards at automated fuel dispensers, because there is no staff member to supervise their redemption (and therefore there is no staff member able to stop potentially fraudulent transactions). The only example I can think of is Ampol, but their automated fuel dispensers only let you redeem one AmpolCash physical gift card per transaction, plus the gift card must have a PIN set on it.

As an aside, you generally cannot use prepaid gift cards at automated fuel dispensers either, because the issuers for most prepaid gift cards (e.g. Coles Mastercard gift cards) specifically block the MCC for automated fuel dispensers.

I find Costco’s fuel prices for U91 underwhelming when compared to the EG Ampol next door, so that’s why you never see me fill up at Costco…

    • +1

      no you can’t buy fuel

  • +8

Some stores do not allow you to spend more than the gift card amount, whilst other stores do, so be aware of this before buying a $20 gift card and buying $200 of stuff.

    • +2

      well that's BS

    • that’s not true as i asked a question about this on costco website and they answered back yes you can spend over the gc amount and do a split payment

  • +1

    no bargain

    • +7

Someone can save $65 a year.

      • And with that can take away some Costco's members in number

  • +4

Thanks but i think it's a forum post?

    • +4

While I'd agree that it technically should be a "forum post" the fact that it has 159+ likes and counting in under 3 hours
this would suggest that it's found it's rightful home in the deals section of OzBargain.

      • +2

Yeah, I guess it's not too dissimilar to all the VPN workaround posts for streaming services. Objection overruled!

  • -6

Where’s the bargain? Still have to pay to use the service. (i.e. have a Costco gift card or purchase one)

    This belongs in the forums.

  • +7

Membership pays for itself when I fill up diesel. Based on the difference in Costco price($1.69) vs most other filling stations ($1.90 on average), I save $13 a tank. Fill up 5 times and my membership is paid for.

    • +10

true, except if you fake your location and use 7 eleven price lock :)

      • +2

Majority of the users were banned for doing that

        • Really? I have been doing it for more than a year without any problem

          • +2

@ValouSydney: Lemme find the deal post that caused that

Edit: Here are the recent forum posts

I think the majority were banned because of this deal

            • +1

@BargainsGrabber: Thanks I didn't know that - I remember this deal as it worked for me :)

            • +4

@BargainsGrabber: 7 Eleven run sweeps at random and no one knows how it works but locking in for others, different logins in the same device and locking in interstate prices increases the chances of the account being G09'd

We even seen people get banned when they actually flew interstate and locked in a price to be used in their own state

          • @ValouSydney: What app do you use to fake your GPS?
I'm using Fake GPS on Android, and the 711 app says my location isn't true, and wouldn't let me do price lock.

            • +1

@talismansa: I use 3utools to set a virtual location on my ipad. No need for jailbreak.
I couldn't make anything work on Android without root access which I don't want to do because I will loose access to my Samsung wallet…

              • @ValouSydney: I see. I don't have an apple device, so I guess this is not going to work for me.

            • @talismansa: this belongs in the forums

    • +3

I never find Costco fuel much cheaper, maybe 1-2c, and there is a massive line of people trying to save that 1-2c, I'd rather just pay a couple cents more and not wait in line.

      • +2

Maybe depends on location but in NSW they’re very competitive.

        • In Canberra you easily save 30c a litre.

      • Depending on where we are in the discount cycle, Western Sydney Costco can be up to 50c/l cheaper than surrounding servos.

    • yes plus gc can’t be used for fuel so need membership

  • +1

Do we get all the discounts/offers like regular membership with gift card as well?
