My first deal on here so be nice! 😄 not as good as the previous 2TB $150 SN850X deal from Amazon but still pretty good I think. Currently have a 1TB version of this drive and it's amazing, I can't recommend it enough.

If this was the heat sink version i would place an order… I think the sweet spot is around $160 .. going by the 2tb 980 Pro heat sink deal that on sale at prime day.

Prices are only going to keep dropping as PCIE 5.0 drives release and the global economy tanks

    • +3

Why will the release of PCI-e 5.0 drives tank the global economy?

      • +1

I said AND … two reasons for prices to drop on NVME 4.0 drives are … new 5.0 drives AND reduced demand due to global economic conditions

        • +2

I guess the tongue-in-cheek wasn't clear there. But in all seriousness, why do you think the global economy will tank?

          • +2

@umexcuseme: I dont… the market is pricing it in… consumer spending is tanking world wide due to cost of rents and property going up all over the world….

Consumer spending is pretty much most of the global economy.. when the slows.. so does everything else..

Food prices stay the same but people can live without new graphics cards and fast PC storage drives so they tank in price…

I got the prime 2TB 980 deal from the US. Quick delivery but the box was an 870Evo1TB with an accidental (I presume) 2TB 980 PRO barcode sticker on it. Back it went today but they won't replace it, just a refund.

      • but they won't replace it, just a refund

Why not? Ask them to let you reorder and refund the price difference.

        • I did, I got a firm no.

          • -2

@Willyeckerslike: End chat and try another rep. That’s what I do when they don’t provide me with a satisfactory resolution.
I went through 4 reps to get my unshipped SSD’s price difference refunded on Prime Day. You’ll end up with a rep that will budge if you keep trying.
Plus, it is not your fault this time. They should compensate you for the inconvenience at least.

            • +2

@FrugalNotStingy: They gave me $10 credit for the inconvenience. I'm ok with it but wasn't particularly happy. I probably won't bother ordering from the US again.

      • +1

I got that same 1tb evo sata with an nvme sticker on it too instead of the nvme 1tb I
ordered… not sure it was accidental as the correct sticker was underneath the incorrect one.

        • Interesting, not just a one off then!

          • +3

@Willyeckerslike: I dont think this is accident or isolated incident. I ordered 2, one came with 980 pro while another was 970 evo. This is not the first time I received wrong item from Amazon US. Last time my Sandisk 4tb SSD was replaced by used 1tb SSD from inside(The package showd brandnew 4tb but used 1tb inside). Next time I might not order from Amazon US despite of good deals.

            • +1

@TripleJJJ: It is off putting buying from the US if it's happening a lot. Someone must be swapping them out….

          • +4

            @Willyeckerslike: Hah i also received a 1tb 970 evo instead of the 2tb 980 pro

        • +1

1TB? You're lucky, I only managed to get a 500GB. I just sent it back, complete waste of time and money for all involved.

        • +1

I also got the wrong order, 500 GB 970 evo, and 2tb 980 Pro. I was upset because I was going to upgrade my and my son's laptop, the rep said I could only get a refund. In the end, she gave me a full refund and let me keep the 2 HDDs.

          • @Edson: From US Amazon as well? Any issues with Amazon UK or Germany?

  • +8

Nice work on first post. Keep ‘em coming

Thanks, appreciate it, will do! 😊

$205 for the heat sink version

  • Does it come with cloning software?

    • My 1TB SN850X didn't so I don't assume that this would either.

      • +2

You need to download the WD Dashboard. WD provides the software Acronis True Image.

    • +2

just use MiniTool ShadowMaker Free 4.1.. its free to clone a disk

Update, looks like the price has reduced slightly to $186.90. I've updated the title accordingly.

I found the below interesting about this particular SSD. This is the only test where I've seen it excel over the other SSDs:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/1146b0s/ssd_seque…

Although, if I were to get one, I'd get the 4TB one - there's nothing else that competes against it, except the 4TB T700 at twice the price.

    • +2

That type of test and on linux certainly is interesting. It just shows that there is more to those flagship SSDs. However, it is not a very objective test and it is essentially a test on foldback write and pSLC cache recovery. It's not very objective because 6 minutes rest may not be long enough to trigger SLC recovery.

WD SSDs do tend to go for more aggressive SLC recovery. There are pros and cons on that approach. Faster recovery does mean re-writing data faster. On the other hand, if not been given the 6 minutes break in between (a more traditional full drive write test), WD won't be able to achieve that kind of result.

Would be good to see tests on 2TB SSDs though, but I guess running such test on 2TB SSDs costs more and takes longer.

      • Yes, also they didn't test at varying capacity points of the drive (e.g. 25%,50%,75%).

Also, I read in one review, the Hynix P41 did better at writing compressed data, than straight zero padded files.

        • Zero padded files… Phison cheats on that big time:

NV2 Phison E21 version Zero Fill Test result

Note: not only Phison can cheat big time in zero fill tests, in the case of E21, it doesn't even use the SLC cache so I found that it has no foldback write penalty whatsoever in zero fill tests. However, we know for proper / random data, there is no way NV2 can do 7000MB/s read or write.

  • Anyone ordering now got this order shipped?
My order is still not shipped since the last $150 deal. :(

    • I also placed an order during the $150 deal and mine hasn't been shipped yet either but I have noticed the estimated delivery date has changed, I can't remember what it was before but now it says 7th of August - 19th of August. I imagine they are still waiting for stock to come in, hopefully the orders will be fulfilled and won't be cancelled 🤞

    • I ordered one during Prime Day sales (for $177) and I just received it yesterday.

  • Got one of these in the system. It is extremely delicious.

    • +1

Yummy, can’t wait to taste one myself

      • +1

How do you guys make PCBs sound creepy

        • +1

Thank your lucky stars we didnt go the route of erotic instead.

  • Are these good as an OS drive?

    • Yeah I have the 1TB version of this drive for my OS and it's great, extremely fast, though I think the 2TB may be a bit overkill if you just want to use it for OS.

  • I haven't been keeping up with SSDs.
Would this be good for the main drive of my proxmox server and to run a few VMs off of?
I'm currently running one of these Crucial P1's…
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-NAND-NVMe-PCIe-M-2/dp/B07J…

Its in a Dell T420 so its only PCIe 3

    • PCIe gen 3 is so much cheaper, if you didn't really need gen 4.

      • Whats a good Gen3 SSD to get for that usage?

      • +1

The 2TB Drives in PCIe3 are not cheaper.. you cant even buy any that i could find.

These are cheaper options but have no D-ram and are slower even when running on a PCIe3.0 slot

        Kingston - NV2 M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe 2TB, Solid State Drive $124.00
        OR
        WD_BLACK 2TB SN770 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280, $149.05

        • +1

Thanks yeah thats what I thought.

          • +1

@stumo: random read & writes on this Western Digital Black SN850X 2TB are crazy good and you will still get that on PCIE3.0

If you oneday upgrade your motherboard you will be able to use its 7400mbps speeds

        • @stumo I just buy samsung 970 1TB a few months back for $60. Apologize, just realize that its harder to find 2TB gen 3 now.

          • @mfu: That was a good deal. They are around $80 now for 1TB, so on a per TB basis I'm still better off getting this WD one. Plus Ive had a 500GB 970 a few years ago and it started playing up so I'm a bit off Smasung SSDs.

    • Somewhere between "good" and "overkill". Things like TLC/QLC, DRAM, and SLC cache amount are not very well advertised on consumer SSDs, so in some ways buying SSDs like these is the best way to guarantee decent performance.

Also FYI I'd get a separate SSD to run the proxmox root (any cheap 128GB sata SSD). It will ensure the host and VMs aren't competing for storage, and will make it easier to do things like reinstall proxmox or move VMs to another machine. Also so you can change storage configuration without reinstalling proxmox.

      • Thanks for the advice. Yep I might as well split them out when the new SSD is ready. I initially installed Proxmox all in one SSD just to test it all out, but it worked so well that first test it just went straight into production.

  • It's gone down even further to $184.35! Title updated :)

  • any 4TB deal please?

    • It was $383 on Prime Day a little more than two weeks ago. Prices will only go down so keep a lookout for new deals.

      • due to oversupply right? Cheers.

EDIT: Oh wait, i bought from this exact link, it was from Amazon Germany. Instead of the SN850X, some random pocket film was wrongly posted to me, and on my account the SSD was marked as "delivered".

I know I can easily ask for a refund, and I have, and it's been approved. But really gutted that I waited a few weeks + missed out of this price for the SN850X due to Amazon's delivery error.
