Guessing its port-in/new customers only again?
Edit: Says new services only =(

  • +4

The plan is worth $39 at best….

makes the real price of the handset $1569.

Deal is ok but not spectacular.

    • +1

The deal is also for those who just want the handset only which is $849 + (($69 x 24)/2) = $1677

      • i want to buy Flip, and i want to do that early termination thing, i have never done and little bit scared as well, what if they didn’t terminate and asked me to pay full price.
i dont know what to do, any suggestions ??

        • Do you have a phone to trade in? Just order it with Samsung

Get double storage valued at $200
          1.Receive a bonus $300 with trade-in
2 1 year Samsung Care+ for free, valued at $1493.

          Newsletter bonus + Loyalty bonus.

          Why go through the trouble?

  • if the plan is unlimited data or say 500-700GB i may take it and ditch my nbn lol

  • What is the cancellation fee?

    • Half of the total plan cost

      • So what is the costs if you buy and cancel the contract? total plan costs $2505 is half is $1252.50 + upfront handset costs $849 = $2101.50?

        • $1677 for the Fold5, $828 for the Flip5

          • @BargainsGrabber: I contacted one of their stores and found out that the requirement is pay upfront and stay for 3 months before canceling so it will be 20 months left on contract divided by 2 so total costs would be $1746 with 3 months on their plan.

            • +1

@lachlan1: HN stores don’t handle the contract once you sign it. I’ve heard HN gives all random responses previously. You contact Optus to cancel, HN does not deal with it anymore

Have a read on this critical information summary, which clearly states the ETC is $828

              • @BargainsGrabber: In this document, it states: "Does not include additional device payments (if applicable)", would Optus charge for the rest of phone price?

                • +1

@BaymaxW: Based on what I did previously, I only paid for the plan charges, no device repayments required

                • @BaymaxW: HN told me u can cancel anytime, max cancellation fee is 828, that’s is in the T and C. For device payment, if applicable, not in this case coz no device repayment is required, it is free.

JB HIFI did this thing in past years , people just grab the gift card or phone and cancel in next day, that result now JB plan has cancellation fee plus return the gift card . Now is HN turn to lean the lesson:) lol

                  • @mapletian: It should be this way, I always say people are scamming retailers and more importantly wasting the sale person's time.

                  • @mapletian: The new plans from JB are the same with HN. I had signed up to 2 of the S23 Ultra deals at JB and I only paid the cancellation fee + the upfront cost ($249)

          • @BargainsGrabber: Also $400/300 HN gift card for pre-order. So virtually $1,277 for the Fold5 and $528 for the Flip5.

            Interesting.

            • +1

@tof: This offer cannot be used together with HN gift cards - I asked

              • @lachlan1: Damn, thanks for checking.

          • @BargainsGrabber: Hey which size GB flip is this ?

      • When can we cancel the plan, as this is pre-order?

Is it after you physically receive the handset and cancel it?

        I guess it's a decent price or flip5($828)

    • Max cancellation fee is 828. In T and C

  • Basically Fold5 is flop from day one
but good value plan for those who wants hands on fold technology with latest chipset.

    • Why is it a flop?

      • +4

        Hey meant to say flip

        • +1

          It's totally a flip!

Why would anyone trust Optus ever again?

Optus breached consumer and telecommunications law and failed in its duty of care to protect users from harm. Bring on the class action.

    • Because being hacked and losing customer information is something that happens on a daily basis - most large organisations have or will be hacked.

If you're trying to exclude hacked companies from your life, then good luck to you - 90% of the companies you interact with are out !

Optus is just one of thousands… there's nothing special about the Optus event other than the scale.

      • +2

nothing special about the Optus event

Wrong. They leaked ex-customer data, long after those customers had left. I was one of those ex-customers. I left Optus YEARS ago, but all my details compromised including drivers license etc.

So tell me again how there's "nothing special" about the Optus incompetence. I mean there's literally a class action under way, and you're saying "nothing to see here" LOL.

        • -1

Yes i was also one of those customers - unfortunately most large companies will retain your data long after you've left. This is just a normal way to operate in Australia.

As I said, there's nothing special about what happened to Optus - it's happening to other companies on a daily basis too.

I'm not sure what you think they did that was uniquely bad, but storing old data for an excessively long term is certainly not it.

          • +2

@Nom: Perhaps you have a stake in Optus, or you're just ignorant.

For starters, the Optus breach was about the mistakes and poor practices on the Optus side, more than any sophisticated attack by hackers. Optus left the back door wide open, and for that they will pay.

I'll use bullet points to help you understand:

            • Class actions don't happen every day in regards to data breaches. The Optus Data Fail was extra bad, extra special, involving more personal details than typical breaches. The kind of details that allow for the 100 points needed for ID verification.
            • It is NOT common for companies to hold that amount of information on previous customers, then expose it via public API.
            • It has NEVER happened ever, that VicRoads would arrange for victims to get new license numbers.

it's happening to other companies on a daily basis too.

Nonsense. You are thinking of the breaches where names and emails get taken, not a full set of credentials including home address, passports and drivers licenses. As I said, Optus screwed up big time and needs to pay. That's why there's a class action. That's why from the Prime Minister down, Optus was condemned for their utter failure to protect customer data. Hope that clears things up for you.

            • -4

              @cerealJay:

Perhaps you have a stake in Optus, or you're just ignorant.

Neither, but my data and yours had already leaked before the Optus hack and again since the Optus hack - the Optus event specifically was just not a big deal.

For starters, the Optus breach was about the mistakes and poor practices on the Optus side, more than any sophisticated attack by hackers.

This is standard for many many data leak events.

Optus left the back door wide open,

Again, companies do this all the time. It's normal not to take this stuff seriously until your company gets rooted.

Class actions don't happen every day in regards to data breaches.

Of course, because they don't usually involve millions upon millions of Australians.

The Optus Data Fail was extra bad, extra special, involving more personal details than typical breaches. The kind of details that allow for the 100 points needed for ID verification.

That has nothing to do with Optus or the hack - the ID data leaked because it was part of the data set. The hackers generally will take whatever they can get their hands on - the more data is there, the more they will take.

It is NOT common for companies to hold that amount of information on previous customers,

It is absolutely the norm for credit-based companies to hold this data for a long long long time.

then expose it via public API.

Unfortunately companies are often useless. Many many hacks happen because of incompetence.

It has NEVER happened ever, that VicRoads would arrange for victims to get new license numbers.

Of course, because they don't usually involve millions upon millions of Australians.

You are thinking of the breaches where names and emails get taken, not a full set of credentials including home address, passports and drivers licenses.

Usually everything gets taken. The only reason your credentials leak less commonly is because many companies don't have anything more than your name and email.
Whatever they have, gets leaked when they get breached. If they have everything, like Medibank and Optus and Latitude, then everything is out there.

As I said, Optus screwed up big time and needs to pay. That's why there's a class action. That's why from the Prime Minister down, Optus was condemned for their utter failure to protect customer data. Hope that clears things up for you.

These things are all purely because of the scale of the breach.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here - you haven't illustrated anything "out of the ordinary" with Optus, they just did what a gazillion other companies do. And when they got breached, all their data leaked just like a gazillion other companies.

              • +3

@Nom: On one hand you're agreeing, "yes it was incompetence affecting millions of Australians" and on the other hand you're trying to dilute the issue as "normal". When you start using words like "gazillions" it reveals the depth of your argument.

Once again, the Optus data breach was not normal, and they need to be held accountable.

I had no "credit" arrangement with them. They took my details for a pre-paid phone years ago. They promised to keep my data secure and respect my privacy, and they failed in that promise. After I left Optus they kept my details ONLINE - fetchable via an endpoint. This is not normal. Companies do not do this in any kind of routine practice.

Unfortunately companies are often useless. Many many hacks happen because of incompetence.

Right, so stop trying to smooth over the incompetence of Optus. They need to be held accountable for their neglect. That's the point. I note my downvote has been removed. Must be Optus fanbois flocking to the defence of the incompetent telco.

my data and yours had already leaked before the Optus hack and again since the Optus hack

No it hasn't. My drivers license/passport and all that 100 point of data in one hit has NEVER been leaked before or since Optus. You are making things up to support your invalid argument.

                • -1

                  @cerealJay:

On one hand you're agreeing, "yes it was incompetence affecting millions of Australians" and on the other hand you're trying to dilute the issue as "normal".

                  Precisely. Both are true.

Companies are incompetent every day - when the results are big enough (like the Medibank / Latitude / Optus hacks) then they make the news. It's unfortunately just a normal event.

                  • @Nom: I've worked for many companies and associated with many companies over the years who absolutely don't drop the ball to the level Optus did when they exposed millions of their past and present customers to harm. It was an abnormal level of incompetence, a serious error, a data breach more serious than normal. Absolutely not a normal event, as agreed by experts and the wider public.

    • -3

last thing you would want in this day and age is another Aussie company goes down.

      • +3

        As Aussie as Singapore.

Singtel Optus Pty Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Singaporean telecommunications company Singtel.

  • So if I take the receipt for TRS, how much I can get it back?

    • +1

I assume 10% of $849 since the other portion is taken out and GST is only on your payable

    • +1

The value of the phone is $849 on galaxy fold and $0 on galaxy flip. That's how much TRS you can claim

  • Do you still get a $400 gift card after you pay $849 or is it already factored in?
    https://azcd.harveynorman.com.au/media/wysiwyg/product/featu…

    • +1

Unfortunately not. Its either that deal or the optus one

      • What a shame. Thanks for the quick clarification!

  • $849 is a pretty impressive saving on the Education price etc though -
IS there something I am missing though as the other deal seems popular though a lot of work.

  • This seems like a great deal.. I'm looking to pick up the Z flip 5. But Ozbargain upvotes are my barometer for how good a deal is, so I wanna know why this isn't getting the upvotes? Is it Gerry? Is it Optus? Is it the phones? Am I missing something?

    • Perfect storm. People hate Gerry, Optus with the breach and then samsung.

In my opinion its a good deal even if you just cancel and cop the payout.

    • +1

It's not getting upvotes because people on Ozbargain don't like locking in to phone contracts, Optus or Harvey Norman. They also keep talking endlessly about the old JB deal where you got a $500 voucher for the $69 a month plan for 12 months, ignoring the fact that deal is LONG gone.

This deal IMO is better than that one if you were trying to get a Fold 5 or Flip 5 anyway as you only got $500 off for 12 months on that deal. Here you get $1750 off (so 3.5 times the GC applied to phone)

IMO, this is a good deal but it won't be voted as such for the above reasons

      • There's also the fact that you got to sign up onto a 24 month mobile plan so there's a potential credit check.

    • the phone is not locked yeah ??

  • I took the punt and this might just be a fantastic deal.
$1656 for the plan, the Flip5 is confirmed to be a "bonus" (According to the invoice) and seems to be directly from HN and not Optus.
I'll cancel the plan once the phone arrives, just in case. So that'll be $828, plus it comes with a $500 gift card. Making the phone $328 after the gift card.

Reading the TnCs, the gift card was meant to be given to me in person and not online, but the fellow who helped me was new and he said it was going to be sent in my Email. I'll go back tomorrow morning and pick it up.

    • +2

Talking to Harvey Norman today. Optus signup people do not get the giftcard

      • That seems fair, but the newbie said I'll be getting a card. I'll still check in the moring, won't hurt.

        • +1

          which HN was this?

          • @googoogaga: @murk17 Let us know if you get the HN gift card with your Optus plan.

You can send me a PM of your store if you don't mind please.

I called up 2 stores in Vic and they were 100% that it's either outright full price with HN gift card or Optus plan in-store only. Not both.

        • Let us know how you go

        • How did you go with the gift card?

        • +1

          Sounds like this didn't happen…

    • So definitely if you cancel early it will be half the plan cost?

      • looks like , he never got the gift card

  • Does anyone know if this would be network locked?
Could you sign up, pay the $69 a month and just use your own pre paid sim, not the optus one?
    Sorry if dumb question

    • +1

Mobile phone is not locked to the Optus network. You can use it on any other network.

  • so does this plan get the additional data? there is a 69 plan for 500gb

    • No. Just 100gb.

  • This actually seems like a good deal if you have no trade-in devices.

    • +1

Even with trade in, I just cancelled my order with samsung and signred up this plan:

      Sam education store: 1319 - 100 trade in bounus- 200 Radom loyalty code - 100 unfold -880 s23U , I pay $39.

HN plan, 828, sell s23 U to MM or private, u will get 1140 back

      So u actually making $312 profit :)

      • Did u get your $200 loyalty code through [email protected]? I got it from them but it doesn't work on the Education store.

        Btw what's MM?

        • Yes, but some people got Radom 200 voucher through email. That’s the different code and can use in education store. As I said, even with 200 voucher, HN deal still cheaper.
MM is mobile monster, very reliable

          • @mapletian: Oh wow i didnt know there's something like Mobile monster exist other than the company trade in. Thanks

  • This is a great deal. I just signed up but i dont know when to cancel the plan.

    • Any luck with the giftcard?

      • no, no gift card for non-outright purchases. I think its part of their invoicing system so I doubt anyone will succeed getting a gift card while signing up via the $69 sim only mobile plan.

        • I signed up today and didnt get a gift card

    • +1

Did you have to go in-store to sign up?

      • +1

The email says in store only until 31/7

      • yes, in-store only.

    • I would cancel the plan after you get the phone, to be 100% safe.

  • +1

Plan apparently starts staright away, got the aim card and all. When should I cancel?

    • Once u got the phone

  • So will it be prorata or pay for 1 month?

  • Do they conduct a credit check?

  • Just picked up the flip5 from HN,gonna cancel the plan once i get home

    • Did you get a call from HN to collect?

      • They called me, anyone who preordered and if their store has got the stock in can collect now

        • Great, Thanks!

        • Did you end up collecting yours?

I collected mine, and I’ve been having issues with play store protect certification. Can’t get my work email set up on there because of this.

Wondering if anyone who collected theirs also having the same issue

        • I called up and they have the stock but they didn't let me collect it. They said 14th of August is now the earliest.

  • "If you are wanting to end your contract early, it will cost you $793.50."

    • I'm trying to get $10 off. Has anyone got a discount on gift card plan?

      • you mean you are keeping the plan? and get $10 off monthly?

        • Yes, I got 2 mobile plans with Optus. Monthly, $10 off on both plan.

          • +1

@sail: 25% off for the 2nd services can be done via chat, not sure which one would be cheaper for you :D

            • @sicinadan: I was only unable to get 10% off for 12 months on both plans and asked me to contact them again after 12 months for a further discount.

  • Anyone with this deal, did you get an invoice for the phone? What was the cost shown on it if there was one?
