If you go to other PSN stores, will it still recognize your PSN+ status, or will that apply only to PSN AU? Because everything is much cheaper on the US store. It's not even worth getting it if it's only for AU.

    • +4

It is worth getting if you want to get the PSN+ games library. I've already gotten several hundred dollars worth of games for the price of my membership over the past few months.

As for your question, I've no idea. Somebody else will.

      • +5

You need to mention these are on loan only in reality. The games cease to be yours after you stop paying membership. Unless you're game sharing between 2 users in the household, I'd much rather own a physical copy to sell and share as I see fit.

No offense intended but it sounds like you've been drinking too much of the Sony Soda.

        • +8

While that was a bit harsh / the neg wasn't really necessary, I think that the point that the games are loan only is important

        • +2

Vote revoked, thanks for the feedback.

Just sick of people on the forums spruiking ps+ as the next best thing since sliced bread.

I don't know anyone who has. Not even Wickz.

I probably can live with losing access to a free game after a year. I don't need that long to be done with a game anyway.

        • spruiking ps+ as the next best thing since sliced bread.

Lol speaking of which, I wouldn't mind a sammich washed down with a "Sony Soda." Off you go, toots.. kitchen is thataway ▬►.. chop chop! ;P

Yes but I would rather buy PSN+ for the US store and buy discounted games from there (Which don't expire when your subscription expires). You should still get the same free games on the US store but the ones you pay for would still be cheaper.

        • +2

          I'll add some clarification.

If you buy a discounted game you keep it even if your PS+ subscription expires. You only lose access to any free games you have 'purchased' eg PS+ monthly free games. You can view when a game expires by (after buying and installing it) pressing triangle and selecting Information.

The US receives different free games to the UK (and consequently the Australian) PS+ users.

As for any price differences, I couldn't say.

        • On average, $19.95 AUS games are about $15 US. However, you need to factor in how much you have to pay to get money on your US PSN account…

To buy a $50 US PSN card costs about $57 ($20 US = $25 AUS). So that already makes the US games a couple dollars more.

Also, to use extra PS+ features like the automatic game updates and auto cloud saves, you need to make your US PSN profile the main profile on you PS3 (the one that loads by default when switched on), and that annoys the hell out of me. Plus, I prefer my AUS PSN account; if for no other reason than it doesn't have "US" on the end :)

So, for the sake few dollars per game (which I no longer buy because they eventually come to PS+ anyway), I don't see the benefit of a US PS+ account; and believe me I've tried.

That said, if someone does have a way to make a US account beneficial, I would love to be proven wrong.

I get my $50 US cards for under $50 AU.

Already was the case for me since I bought the machine…

So, for the sake few dollars per game (which I no longer buy because they eventually come to PS+ anyway), I don't see the benefit of a US PS+ account; and believe me I've tried.

I buy entire full downloaded games from there. Always when they're on sale of course. I don't know what they charge on the AU store, but it's going to be more. A few dollars per game adds up to a lot.

That said, if someone does have a way to make a US account beneficial, I would love to be proven wrong.

All you need if you want to buy $50 US cards without markup is to know someone in the US who can buy them for you… I've even purchased cards on ebay from time to time for cheaper than $50.

On average, $19.95 AUS games are about $15 US. However, you need to factor in how much you have to pay to get money on your US PSN account…

To buy a $50 US PSN card costs about $57 ($20 US = $25 AUS). So that already makes the US games a couple dollars more.

Let's do a bit of maths here, using your figures. For simplicity we'll assume the dollar is parity, even though it's a little bit above. For $50 US you get 3 $15 games and $5 left over. Each $15 game saves you $5, so that's a saving of $15. It costs you $7 to buy the card, but you have $5 remaining. So you effectively paid $47 for 3 $15 games. In AU, those 3 games would have cost you $60.

I'm not going to offer buy people $50 cards for cost because that would assume you will have to trust me with your money, but I'll just reiterate that it's not hard to get them without markup if you know how.

        • Bestbuy no longer sell PSN cards online.

        • Well they're definitely valid points. Nice job.

Except I couldn't recommend buying "full downloadable games" (by which I'm assuming you mean games that are also available to buy on disc). Surely they would always be cheaper online at OzGameShop, etc…

But well done on the US PSN cards. I'm jealous.

        • this is no good, guess I will have to get my clan mates in the US to get them.

    • +1

No, it will only work in the region (on the account) where you have plus.

      • +1

In that case, I would save more money if I paid full price for the US PSN+ subscription. The games are that much cheaper. Actually.. I think the full price US PSN+ is cheaper than the 25% off discounted AU membership, and you get 3 months free with it. It's a no brainer if so.

        • Just checked, cost of US PSN+ membership for 12 months is US$49.99.

A newbie question if I may. Purchased a PS3 from amazon.de based on a great deal posted here on ozbargain. How do I connect this unit to the US PSN+ and would games downloaded / purchased from the US store work on my PS3. Many thanks.

        • +2

You just choose USA, when asked what country you are in, when signing up to psn. I have accounts from 4 regions.

  • +1

Anyone know about a current deal on PSN prepaid cards?

Stacking discounts would be really nice!

  • What are some games you can get for free?

    • +3

At the moment on the store the free games for PS+ subscribers are: Borderlands, Just Cause 2, Dead Space 2, Saints Row 2, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Infamous 2, Motorstorm Apocalypse, and Little Big Planet 2. A few months back they had Dues Ex: Human Revolution, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, Darksiders, Max Payne and NFS: Shift Unleashed.

      • +1

That's a very impressive list. I paid $60 for my copy of DS2 and didn't regret a single dollar of it.

      Ninja'd

I've had PS+ since the start of the year, and I reckon it was worth it.

  • Good deal for those interested in plus, the ones not interested in plus should head over to the apple free t-shirt thread and hang out with the rest of the trolls.

  • I already have a 3 month subscription that automatically renew every 3 months and I'm about half way through a 3 month membership, will this add an year membership on top of my current 1.5 months left (eg have 13.5 months) or will it cancel out the 1.5 months I already have left?

    • +1

it will add on, just like xbox live

  • +2

Don't forget that while free games are an indefinite loan, some games are just heavily discounted and they are yours to keep. I have never paid for PSN, but I did enjoy the free time given when Sony got hacked.

  • +2

Sony is really adding value these days unlike Mircosoft.

    • -2

Is there a difference between value and security?

I still find QOS better when using the Xbox Live system over the PSN

  • +1

If you own a PS3 and like games then Plus is a must nowadays. I've had it since day one and it has improved/evolved brilliantly.

    • +1

If you've been on since day one you would have a hell good free game collection by now.

      • +2

640GB HDD and I have to be choosy as to whether I keep a game on the HDD or just keep it in my download list and download it when I'm ready to play it, lol.

I rarely buy PSN games now due to high chance that I can get it for free eventually.

  • yeah had it for 3 months ealier in the yr… wasnt too bad. I will get this and hope they introduce more Vita content as well as ps3.

  • So discounted games you buy while on PS+ stay once your membership expires?
    Free games disappear?

    • +1

Yes exactly, if you resubscribe your free games reappear.

  • I love the PS+ membership however the only thing I hate is trying to schedule the game downloads during my ISP off peak times.
5-8gb per game can chew through my usage pretty quickly

    • Setup PSPlus to auto download during off peak? Does your router allow any kind of filtering by time?

  • Sorry to sound dumb but… When you subscribe to this can you download the games to an external HD ,ie are the games then yours to keep forever, or do they not work/dissappear if you aren't subscribed anymore?

I am on mobile broadband at the moment with a 12 gig limit (disconnected my adsl due to our house being on the market and didnt want to sign another 12 month contract for adsl till we moved). would it be worth getting this if the games are huge or should I just wait till I get adsl/NBN

    Thanks

    • Your first question has been answered in first post : It is a loan, you won't get to keep/play the games when you unsubscribed.

Your second question would be a big NO because 12GB just ain't enough. Two games would blow it all away.

      • Thanks I think I'll wait till I have adsl again

        • or take advantage of this subscription price now, and just got to the PS store 'buy' the items and then download them when you get ADSL again. That way when you have ADSL back in a couple of months, you will have a games collection ready to be downloaded.

      • +1

You could allways get an optus $2 days sim. I use one at the moment. It has unlimited everything so the wifi hotspot feature on mobiles does wonders for much needed internet :D.

Our house is in construction so we can't get adsl till that is ready obviously. Optus have effed me over so many times in the last year I have no remorse for abusing their offers like this.

In a nut shell, I downloaded Battlefield 3 in a day using it, which was something like 30gb? Well that 30gb cost $2. As opposed to $50 for 4gb on my old vodafone stick…

        • Ok, I did not know about those SIMs. That is an awesome deal.
          How does it work though?
is it, a $10 dollar sim expires in 10 days and costs 2$ a day? meaning a total of 5 usage days?

  • Don't for get the other great features of PS+ which are scheduling updates during the middle of the night so all your games are up to date when you go to play them
And also cloud saves which have been increased to 1gb now

    • So you leave the P3 turned on so it will update?

is it possible to actually save your ps3 games to the hard drive so you dont need to use the disc? Sorry I am a noob to ps3 had a pc all my life

      • +1

No I have mine scheduled to turn on at 2am, update and install anything then shutdown again

Disc based PS3 game may install files to the hdd but it will still require the disc to play
PSN bought games will install and run from the hdd

        • Cool thanks for the info

  • I wonder if US store has the same deal.

  • Was considering getting this a few weeks ago!

My PS3 stopped playing BluRay disks after ~15 months…it makes a 'crunching' noise several second after inserting a BD, and then nothing.
DVDs and CDs play fine though, as well as content on the HDD.

  • +2

I like ps+ they did this deal exactly a year ago too because I got it then and my sub is up for renewal this month. Yes it is a rental service but at $4.35 a month that's pretty cheap and you get cloud storage + theme n stuff, beta access etc. It's worth it in my opinion.

  • bugger, i just renew my membership for $69.95 2 weeks ago :(

  • Do the discounts on the AUS psn with PS+ actually make the discounts anywhere near as good as the US PSN discounts? I was almost thinking of making a new US PSN account but if this is worthwhile I'll stay on my aus one.

  • I really want this just for the ability to upload my save games to the cloud. I wish they had a super cheap option just for that, I'm not interested in the games as I have enough of a backlog already!

  • +1

I have had plus since it was first released. Absolutely great value. It doesn't bother me that I'm effectively "renting" the games as I am always going to stay subscribed. For $50 you are getting around 20-30 full release games a year. Since E3 and plus changed to get rid of ps1 games and add more ps3 games it has become even better. Seriously with the 6 games in the instant games collection and this months main game of red dead, how is $50 not amazing value? Then chuck in cloud saves, auto updates, discounts on other titals, demos, beta access etc.

I have an Xbox with live and prefer my ps3 with plus the majority of the time.

    • +1

I have never taken my Xbox online, well at least not multiplayer since getting a 14 month gold sub. Waste of cash…

  • Is there any value in getting this if you only have a vita?

    • Not yet, Vita gets full support before the years end that's all we know so far.

  • Is there any reason Outland and Deap Space 2 are not available for download at the moment? The images are still up on playstation plus AU website?!?

I desperately wanted outland as part of the membership :(

    • Yes, they are out of rotation now. You missed them.

      • Bugger - oh well that's what I get for waiting a week haha

Do they ever repeat a game (like outland?) or is that it… it will never be free on plus again?

        • Never repeat them.

        • +1

They have repeated in the past but it is frowned upon by longtime members and Sony gave said they will try and keep such things to a minimum.

        • I could understand why it is frowned upon (not value for someone who already has it) but perhaps they should do it a little for the newer customers - obviosuly if you've been there from the start and repeating something that would take the spot of something new would be a loss of value to the older customers. Perhaps an extra?! haha

          Oh well my bad luck

Is there a good blog something like Major Nelson that tracks the AU playstation plus releases? The EU blog aussie version is pretty shite…

        • The only repeats (correct me if I am wrong) were due to the PSN Outage deal they ran.

As for tracking, maybe kinda, but not really here - http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1467500&p….

I just keep them all starred in Google Reader.

        • I'm pretty sure there were other repeats early on as I recall the bitching on the blog about it, there haven't been many though.

  • Hey

What speeds have people been able the free games at?

I tried to download red dead and infms2 and after 6 hours reddead downloaded but infms2 only 35%?

my internet is quite fast for other things but game downloads from PSN seems to struggle.

    Is this same for others?

    • Yeah speeds aren't great on PSN downloads. Some times I get 8-10gb a night other times 20+.

    • I find the speeds quite good. I get ~2-3MB/s downloading (on Bigpond)

      • how long did one of the current free games take to download?

        • Actually come to think of it 6 hours for Read Dead (over 8GB) and 35% of Infamous 2 (over 15GB) is actually rather quick. You probably had 14GB in total in 6 hours.

  • negative for the quality of the psn store. i signed up to psn+ yesterday and lots of icons are missing (I googled it, and it is an issue for most of EU) so they are essentially ripping you off. download speeds are also very slow. borderlands (~4gb) took 4 hours to download

    • Icons?

      • look at the themes section. half the icons will be missing. it's a well known issue

        • Correct, they have been missing for ages, bit rich to say they are ripping you off.
They do always show (for me at least) in the themes section.
That said, of you are getting PS+ for the themes, then me thinks you are missing the point.

Borderlands took 2hrs for me to download, so that may be your issue, or just the time you downloaded, but it is not the fastest downloads that is for sure.

Negative for "quality of the psn store" does not make this a bad deal.

        • half the discount section is missing too. that's pretty big in my books. not saying it's a bad deal, just that sony's post-purchase service is horrible

        • Quite often the missing icons are simply not available in Oz.

        • +1

The PS Store is terrible. When I go into PS+->Freebies, there will be a block of ~10 icons that will never load, and if I scroll down they will be replaced with different items when I scroll back up. So many on line stores in the world that work, but apparently too hard for a single multi-billion dollar company like Sony.

That being said, I would still put up with these inconveniences for this deal.
