Fwiw we used these guys recently. Had 4 of us lose our luggage for about 8 days while OSdays. PDS says each adult gets $750. Fair enough we purchased stuff for all four of us using $1500. They paid back $995 saying that was ‘assessed as fair’. Can’t be bother arguing but why offer $1500 and only pay out $995 when we showed receipts and it was all legit. Annoying.

    • +33

This is not right. If it's clearly written as $750pp benefit they aren't supposed to reduce it by their own 'fairness' assessment.

If what you say is true, this is a misleading conduct to customers and is a legal breach to their obligation. You can file a complaint to them first, demanding for an explanation, if that doesn't work try reporting to Financial Ombudsman or ACCC

Isn't complimentary credit card insurance just as good?

    • +3

do u need to buy the flight ticket thru that CC to activate ? too many grey zones??

      • +1

Not all! Ive been researching as i think our japan cover would be too expensive just to buy insurance for 2 for a 16 day travel. A few of them actually only require you to spend at least $500 towards the trip (could be hotels, activities) to cover the entire trip and this activates the insurance. Look at bendigo ready cc, zero annual fee. Otherwise there's platinum debit like nab which carry smiliar insurances but that one has 10 dollar a month fee. 1% cashback on paywave transactions though to make up for it. Both also have zero international transaction fees.

        • +1

My Bendigo Bank card covers 90 consecutive days for myself and my wife. There are $0 annual fees and the only stipulation for cover is that we each have to spend $500 towards our prepaid travel. I'm doing a lengthy trip overseas next year and our travel insurance was going to cost over $2000. At that rate, even a premium credit card with an annual fee would be cheaper.

          • @wombat1955: Exactly my thoughts. It’s just not practical to buy travel insurance separately anymore. People just need to be more aware of options like these. Even paying for 120 a year for that platinum visa debit from Nab is worth it as it doesn’t require a credit check and yup covers partners too. Most cover covid too!

            • @ozchobie: I assume you would need to have the card active till the end of your travel period right?

          • @wombat1955: Yeah, you need to be very careful as many are not as simple as that Bendigo one. I got caught out twice being lazy thinking my card would cover me but when i re-visited the PDS realized i had not met the criteria so had to buy seperate cover.

          • @wombat1955: Commbank don't require any spend. Also does anyone know if credit card insurance covers action sports?

      • For my last trip to Europe, I purchased separate travel insurance but used AMEX to purchase hotel bookings, etc. My concern was that I was then covered by both insurances. Apparently, in these cases, each company may deny responsibility. I sought clarification from the separate insurance I purchased but it was clear as mud. Luckily I did not have to claim.

        • Depending the Amex card you have, mine is edge. No complimentary travel insurance unless card is used to buy RETURN flight ticket. Not happy.

      • Commbank you don't need to spend anything on the card to get the insurance.

This varies wildly on the card, in terms of both qualification requirements and coverage.
For example some may not cover co-travelers or only certain ones as additional cardholders. They almost certainly never cover 'extra' activities like cruises or high risk activities.
And they never cover pre-existing medical conditions.
Read your PDS very very carefully.

      • the citibank cover seems to cover cruises and covid

      • Using the insurance included with my CBA Platinum Mastercard for an upcoming trip and I've called them recently to confim that they will cover my daughters pre existing medical condition, shes Type 1 diabetic.

    • +1

Possibly but make sure you buy your tickets on the right CC and check to see what the excess will be. Some cards can charge a pretty penny if you utilise their service.

      • +1

Yup - i'm just looking at CC cover for our USA & UK trip, and see that it's limited to $13k per person, or $16.5k total for a cardholder travelling with their spouse/children.

        Not even close to enough!

    • Churning credit cards is more profitable and you usually need to hold the card until you travel to have the insurance.

NAB PLATINUM debit card also has complementary insurance

  • I used to use these guys when adding a second person on an annual multi trip cover with $0 excess was free. Nowadays they double the quote so less beneficial. It also covers travel domestically from at least 250km away from home. The annual policy also doesn't cover Covid either so the value is decreasing year on year

  • +1

    Anyone have a better alternative?

    • Wow they are bad any recommendations apart from these guys.

      • SCTI

      • +2

For comparison, I used these guys (discounted to $85ish a few years back for return trip to America). Broke ankle, they refunded my return trip and paid all medical costs as well as business class home. Can’t fault them to be honest.

  • I’m going to uk for 4 weeks wife and 2 kids staying with family.
Some of these insurance companies offer covid cover is this really a requirement these days?

As I’m orginally from uk dual nationality I take medical side of things would be covered anyway with agreement with australia and uk and being citizen of both.
So the cover would be more for travel to and from and lost of luggage etc etc.

I go mid September and not got anything yet I did look up somewhere maybe it was these guys and I’m sure it was $600 plus for a 4 week trip which to me sound’s expensive.
My tickets or should I say booking allows me to do two changes so would this not be for say if we got covid and had to change or plans.

I’m flying with Qatar if that helps which stop for hr or so and heads on to London and elsewhere in uk with a domestic fight there.

  • So is it better to go thru your credit card than independent? Last few international trip I just bought auspost travel int. Insurance at the airport terminal auspost shop. Lol couple bucks a day

  • This is for ENTERTAINMENT BOOK members.

    • That still exists?

      • 99 cents last month for membership.

        I paid by cheque.

  • Travel insurance? I thought that was called "post event crowd funding" and was a mainstay of Bali holiday makers?

  • Scti cheaper by $70 without discount code , or $21 with discount code.
I'm buying scti as always, and scti has solid 4.7 rating vs very low 2.1 for world2cover in product review.

    • Where's the SCTI code?

    • SCTI is $80 dearer for 10 nights travel for my itinerary.

  • How is this compared to tick travel insurance?

  • Personally i would avoid - worst experience i have had putting through a claim.

      Go on, tell us more

  • I’m already overseas. Does anyone know an insurance company that you can start a policy abroad without needing a confirmed return date?

    • +1

I dont think you can buy one once you are already away

    • +6
