    • id get the samsung t5 that was listed a day ago as it includes reliable enclosure and heat management and proper transfer speed

  • My laptop is only support PCIe 3.0, should I go for this one? The price between 3.0 and 4.0 not much different :(

  • +1

I have a pretty old laptop which I still use (Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 5), only 256GB.
Should this one be ok with it? Does it need a heatsink? Pretty tight in there.

  • this 990 Pro nvme drive is very efficient better then 980 Pro. and most of the time these drives at sitting idle

  • I have a spare gen 5 slot on my motherboard. Should I buy this or go for gen 5?

    Gaming only

    • I honestly doubt you could notice ANY difference on a gen 5 specific device at similar speeds. Esp for a gaming profile.

      • +1

In pc gaming you can’t tell any difference between gen 3 4 or 5. It’s most just epeen factor.

    • This is better to get now… you can replace it in 3-5 years with a cheap gen 5 drive

    thanks all

Thanks. Been chugging along with a toshiba thnsnk128gvn8 as my OS drive for too long.

    • WOW .. what an upgrade

      • Hopefully I feel it haha.

I went from a 2600k @4.9 to a 9900k @5.0 when that launched which was a massive upgrade. Everything was stable for 4.5 years and then my mobo got fried and only 1 ram slot worked. CPU is still fine and works in a friends build.

Selling the 9900k should hopefully net back most of what I spent on a r5 7600 + b650. Am5 boot times currently suck though but I'm still getting a perf uplift.

  • What are peoples' opinions on these vs the Western Digital WD Black SN850X 2TB that seem to be its main competition?

    • Already asked by me, answered (thank you) by @netsurfer

Each flagship PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD is optimised differently, so it comes down to what you are after. If you care about writes, then SN850X is probably better. Reads and lower latency, 990 Pro is better.

With both SSDs, upgrade firmware to the latest right away (unless you happened to receive one that has the latest firmware already). SSD price is trending downward and there will be better deals. 1TB 990 Pro was on special for $56. However, SSD makers know people want 2TB and 4TB SSDs (so they are not doing fire sale on those as often).

  • If anyone missed out on this, mine arrived, but I no longer need it as I decided to go with the NM790 de fory new build instead.
