Damn still waiting for some Melbourne deals =(

    • +2

Just fly into sydney? Would likely just add an extra $100 - $200 on top per flight.

Or there's similar price return flights currently with Phillipine Airlines with a stop over in Manila.

      • +13

Direct flight is always preferable. The more stops you add, the more chance your journey might get disrupted.

Transiting via Sydney, you need to allocate more time to transfer from domestic to international. Not sure if the baggage would be going direct, or if you have to make separate booking.

        • +8

Just for reference, only 2 airlines fly direct from MEL to Tokyo and they're JAL and Qantas so I wouldn't expect too many sales.

ANA is having reasonable amount of sales because they're flying in quite a competitive space. SYD <> Tokyo has currently got 2 x Daily ANA, (soon to be) 2x Daily Qantas, 1 x daily JAL flights.

ANA currently also just partnered with Virgin Australia (you can book it all as 1 VA or NH ticket) and you will almost certainly be interline changed onto a connecting virgin australia flight to Melbourne from Sydney.

  • +1

Come on ANA, you've got the VA deal, more ports pls.

my conclusion from all these great flight deals that i would otherwise be very interested in is that unsw breaks are simply too painful to work around. :(

    • +1

Doesn't the uni semester start in March? Could do a Winter trip in Feb? But yeah, breaks would usually coincide with peak time (April, July, September), aka no incentive to discount them.

      • unfortunately unsw use a trimester system nowadays so we start a mere two weeks into feb. would love to do that, though!

    • +1

Nah just skip the first 3 weeks of lectures, there’s no exams at the beginning anyways

      • +2

        don't tempt me..

ANA is so nice. Flown with them 4 times, nicest flight staff I've ever encountered, and the food was actually rather good.

    • +2

flew with them when I went to NY and they were superb.

  • -1

You can get cheaper prices on at least some of these days from Perth on JAL but its not direct.

    • +1

And most probably have to fly per to KL via MAS.

      • -1

Nope - on JAL the whole way via SIN

        • +2

Just note PER <> SIN leg would be Qantas operated as JAL doesn't fly that route.

  • Could totally grab a couple weeks trip to Japan from Perth
Is end of Feb, begin of March a good time?

Never been and keen to venture to Japan, with time to plan till next year.

Presuming couple weeks would be a reasonable time to explore around

    • February/March is a good time as it's before the rush of cherry blossom season and off peak. Even if your not a skier, a trip up to Hokkaido is always very nice as it is a winter wonderland (Sapporo ice festival in early February is nice)

This deal is much better than the recent Virgin deals, which is operating too much like a LCC for these routes.

    • +1

March is when the sakura blossom season starts so would be a good time to go to see it (though others will also have the same thinking so may be quite busy tourist wise).

A couple weeks (2-3) would be a good period of time - first timers would often do an itinerary of Tokyo (potentially including the hot springs town of Hakone, as well as going to see Mt Fuji) - Kyoto - Osaka - Tokyo (sometimes including Himeji Castle and Hiroshima/Miyajima as well). Major cities will have bilingual signs everywhere in English and Japanese and locals in those cities usually can understand basic English - you don't need to know Japanese but it definitely helps.

Just would note that from October this year, the cheap JR Pass (used for unlimited travel on bullet trains) will be price hiked immensely, so buying single bullet train tickets or getting regional passes will probably be cheaper.

      • +1

cherry blossoms would prob be early April.. there's a reason why fares are cheaper before then and outside of usual tourist busy period.

        • They've been starting earlier so mid-late March you can already start seeing them. But yes, early-mid April is still Sakura season, late April it's already into wisteria season unless further north.

          • +1

@Ventak: Early April if you are looking at Tokyo Osaka. Probably best to be there by around 5 April. If more north then later. Every year will be different and depends on weather condition flowers may not stay on the trees long, eg windy condition. They have early bloom and late bloom variety. Early bloom is the more popular one.

There’s a website that updates regularly on best time to view.

  • Damn just bought from the previous deal when it was $970. Has anyone ever cancelled from one of the third party agents like gotogate without paying a fee?
I did it once when COVID happened and got full refund but that time has gone ..

    • +11

I wouldn't really bother cancelling and dealing with the hassle over ~100. It'll likely cost you money to cancel firstly and also the time and effort you spend is likely to cost significantly more than $100.

  • -6

Meh Too many Aussies going to Japan. I rather go somewhere else

    • That's fine for you. But there's also a whole lot of business travellers to Japan too (myself include).
These are useful when we have preplanned events we need to visit.

Japan is after all Australias #2 trade partner behind China.

    • Pretty ignorant comment.
I spend a lot of time in Japan, even have a house there. I've been there months without seeing an Aussie.

The largest concentration of Aussies is at the ski resorts like Niseko.

    2x 23kg Bags Included

not boogie board bags are they?

    • I wish they did 32kg like other airlines so you dont have to bring two larger travel suit cases.

  • Who wants to go Japan with me

    • -5

      depends😏 are you a boy or not 😂 (i am a boy)

      • +7

        bro is down bad

    • I'll go with you regardless if you're a guy or girl or even Non binary

    • Solo single traveller here too

I was contemplating how it would be by myself. Definitely be better with the right company

      • +1

Japan is perfect for solo travel. Very easy to get around on your own. Only thing is that hotels and ryokans can be expensive, so splitting the cost definitely helps.

        • But on your own you can go to capsule hotel! Impractical for couples and families :)

        • I do have to note that Ryokans tend to charge per person rather than by room, so isn't as much of an issue for solo travellers.

I usually do one Ryokan each Japan trip as they are a very nice experience with usually a onsen (hot spring) or sento (bath house) facility, a traditional tatami room (there is sometimes options for western style) and the meal service (usually for dinner and breakfast, except for Minshuku which don't have these). Ryokans aren't usually a budget item, but you can usually get from about $200 a night, but the experience is worth it as some of the meals I've had at them have been superb.

Solo accommodation is very good and unlike a lot of picture of cramped pods, most capsules are more like little rooms. Capsules arent always the cheapest with airbnb apartments usually designed for 1 person a good option (especially for longer stays) . Business hotels are also good as my last one cost 22,000 yen for 4 days and was right on the Yamanote line.

  • Noooooo, of course just booked flights on the weekend and now $400 cheaper on same dates 😭

    • +1

Same, I've got 2x flights booked with Singapore Airlines for $1200 each for the 31/01-16/02 😩

      $400 cheaper and direct? Goddamn.

Not the best time to travel, cold!

  • I booked ANA flights via VA in the last deal. My documents say only one piece of luggage - does anyone know if it will actually be two pieces? Hope so as one won't be enough for 6 weeks. Thank you :)

Premium Economy and Economy Class: 2 Bags

      • Thank you for confirming what I had hoped for! :)
I wonder if my local connecting flights (Hobart - Sydney) in the same booking will also have 2 bags… I might have to give VA a call to confirm that. Thanks again!

        • Apologies - I did not pay attention that you had booked via VA. I think calling VA is a good idea.

    • If it's a VA flight number I thiiink their allowances may apply instead of ANAs?

      • ANA is exclusive out of Sydney, last time I looked. Twice a day. Although it is probably a code share.

  • Is it safe to go to japan now since they are dumping nuclear waste into the ocean? Prob best to avoid any seafood.

    • -2

well when it happened radiation levels in the ocean were high all the way over on west coast of USA… so fair to say most have prob had seafood from that region..
but yes i heard certain countries were stopping seafood imports/testing it

    • China is constantly releasing cooling waste water out of all their own nuclear power plants already. And we all know the CCP has a proven track record of stellar environmental conservation.

      From polygraph.info:

Around 8.4 kilograms of tritium are already in the Pacific Ocean. By comparison, the Fukushima wastewater contains a total of three grams of tritium.

Japan is not planning to release the treated radioactive water all at once. The process will take up to 30 years, and only a tiny amount, 0.06 of a gram of tritium, is scheduled to be released each year.

“Compared with the radioactivity already present in the Pacific, the planned annual release is a literal drop in the ocean,” three Australian scientists wrote in a joint report."

  • hows the snow during this period? any recommended ski resorts for feb?

    • I went in March last year and went to Niseko. Snow was really good still. Other recommended one is Nozawa Onsen. Lots of good ski resorts.

  • Not bad, but long way off. I want to go now!

  • why is it cheaper from sydney than from perth? it seems the flight duration is similar.

    • Demand and competition.

    • 2 flights a day, maybe?

  • Are there any business class deals for these dates? Super tempting!

  • +2

Booked a ticket through iwantthatflight. Redirected to Cheapoflyt Pty Ltd. After payment it says transaction was declined. Few minutes later I received a call suggesting to pay extra to confirm the flight. I refused and hang up. Again after a few minutes another phone call confirming they can honour the original price and my payment was taken. An hour later I received yet another call saying they have trouble issuing the ticket and would issue a refund.

I would avoid using this site. Wasted my night getting screwed around by this guy.

    • yup, similar experience with Cheapoflyt - although they didnt honour original price, just said they only have 1 ticket at that price and after 'trying' to find another deal, he couldnt assist further then just cancelled my 'unconfirmed' booking. definitely avoid this site!

      • +1

Yup I went direct with ANA and paid extra $120 for two tickets on the same date. Now I just need to chase after the refund from Cheapoflyt . Super annoying :(

    • +2

Thanks for sharing. This justifies my aversion to flight aggregators and online travel agencies. Sometimes they find the deals but always go direct to the airline and pay the 5-10% more to avoid these hassles.

  • Is it worth travelling to JP with 2 young kids (under 5)?

    • thinking about taking my 6/7 and 9/10 yr old kids in the future - one of the main reasons would be for disney land and disney sea. we've done the gold coast once and a P&O cruise and it would be the first international trip.

keen for feedback or for budget experiences from anyone else

  • Brisbane has a large population wanting to travel to Tokyo each year but no direct flight with ANA or JAL…

    • Doesn't Qantas? Jetstar used to from Gold Coast.

      • Qantad has direct and soon jetstar too ad their moving their gold coast to Brisbane.

  • The the ANA flights from Sydney also goto Haneda, the closest airport to Tokyo. It's direct so just about 9 hours, easy flight. Do it a bit.

  • Wish to have Sydney <> Osaka KIX reopen instead…

  • This is a well priced deal for Perth. I find flying Singapore Airlines is still a good choice. It is not direct, but breaking up your trip, stretching and enjoying Changi Airport for a couple of hours each way is pleasant (if you like walking). Am I the only one that has discovered Garret's popcorn in terminal 1?

  • Any idea how long will this sale be on for? I want to use my points but they don't convert to velocity points until Monday.

  • Thanks OP, managed to snag one of the Perth to Tokyo flight granted I did it directly via ANA website.

    • Was that a similar deal that you got from the airline website? May I know approx how much?

      • Including seat selection for both legs, final price was $1,067.

From memory, it was same price as above excluding the seat selection, which was extra.

        • Thanks… What dates did you get… End of March?

  • I want to go end of Jan, seems like those dates are not so discounted until towards end of Feb.

Should I wait for any more deals or book now?

  • Any idea if the pokemon jet applies to every single Syd<->Tokyo flights (NH879/NH880/NH889/NH890), or it's just luck if you happen to get one? https://www.ana.co.jp/en/au/the-ana-experience/pikachujet/
