Temperature range: 100-300°C (think this is a mistake)

Won't work until it's reaches at least boiling point

    • Well it’s not a meat thermometer then.

      • I like mine well done

        • Very well done…

    • +2

definitely a mistake, meant to be °F not °C

why is the meater linked below? is it a straight copy does it use the same app? most of these wireless meat thermos are terrible to use and the apps are even worse

  • +6

Why wouldn’t you just buy an inkbird? ALDIs marketing is great at convincing people that all the cheap shit they sell is somehow special.

    • +4

inkbird dont make a standalone wirless thermo

How is it different to this?

These are connected to the display.

no wires and no main module to run it. dont get me wrong it does 100% the same thing. but for people who smoke a lot or cook in the oven its nice to be able to poke ya meat and not worry about wires when its in the pit/oven

            @bob98:

but for people who smoke a lot or cook in the oven

            Yep that's me.

its nice to be able to poke ya meat and not worry about wires when its in the pit/oven

That's not me. I'd rather wires to a display and wifi/Bluetooth & app.

Electronics need to be very well insulated from heat. And Bluetooth/wifi don't go far when inside say a triple steel bbq egg.

@M00Cow: I've never had too much trouble with the Meater in my Kamado, the base station acts as a repeater so you just leave that outside near the probe and it extends the signal to your phone.

The main reason I have one is for the rotisserie on the KJ.

              • +1

@playaz91: Yeah I've made do without the Meater on the KJ but given this price point I'll gvie it a crack for the rotisserie cooks.

            • @M00Cow: Should be fine if you're cooking low and slow though, bro.

        • I stand corrected.

        • Someone posted before reading the original post, calm down champ it’s okay

          • @BatmanAU: Someone acknowledged their mistake 50 minutes ago literally directly above you. Calm down champ it's OK.

            • @choodi: I noticed you were going to advise me before you posted, easy buddy, easy, it’s okay

Everything Aldi sells i believe is designed to break. I understand it's made to very low price points but for consumers it's a RAW deal.

Especially when people are using these for accuracy.

    • I’d argue in general their prices aren’t actually that low.

Everything Aldi sells i believe is designed to break

I have the exact opposite experience. Plenty of my Aldi purchases are going well and have undergone a LOT of use. Quite a few things are solid quality

    • +5

My philosophy is if you're not sure you need something, buy a cheap version of it. This way you can see if you'll actually use it, when it breaks, get yourself a good one then. Because you probably used it a lot. if it doesn't break, it probably means you don't use it very much and don't need to get a good, expensive one.

    • Designed to break? Surprised they are still in business.

  • TBH I don't even use my Meaters much anymore, just instant probe it.

Bunnings doesn't carry the Matador variant anymore, but I suspect those had such bad feedback they had to.

The AAA goes inside the housing of the dock, right? Not the actual unit, right??

    • ive got the matador ones they work but the app just lets them down completely. hows the meater app? im the same as you i might poke a brisket with my inbuilt thermo in the smoker but most the time ill just use instant read

      • the matador was terrible when I tried it, just constant drop outs, my inkbird is far better

      • Meater app is great.

      • It's decent, but it's not very smart about calculating end points of things that have a stall. Still though, gotta have the home base close enough to get the signal through the cooking unit (which is made of metal, so blocks some of the signal), and then that home base itself has to be close enough to your wifi. This can be a problem for some folks.

  • I had one of the last Aldi (wired) meat thermometers. Never worked - sadly I didn't get around to trying it for months, and by then had lost the receipt

  • The issue i've had with the bluetooth sensors is the lack of range. Maybe they've improved these days? But I moved to an inkbird that uses RF I think? Anyway it's not bluetooth, it has a sender unit and a receiver, and the range is fantastic. +1 inkbird

  • Meater probes just don't support high heat so you need to take it off the meat when you sear it which is annoying.
Mine stopped working after a few weeks because of this and Meater captured the max temperature in their logs so they won't cover warranty for it.
It's also sometimes hard to connect to the phone.

I would just use a "regular" wired thermometer from now on, much more reliable in my opinion - even though I prefer wireless

    • +1

Why would you need the thermometer in the meat when you sear it?

      • I'm assuming not to overcook?
Or you took the meat off early and cook the rest when searing?

  • +1

I use The MeatStick one as you can use it Sous Vide or Deep frying as well. Been pretty good over all.

  • +3

finally I can measure my meat wirelessly

    • +1

      The heat on your meat…..

  • +3

This will be very handy for my rotisserie cooks. Can't obviously use my inkbird for them

  • +1

    Thanks OP

  • I got an inkbird bluetooth thingo on prime day for around this price. Should have got a wifi model, long smokes and bluetooth just arent that great if you want to leave the house and still monitor…app makes all the difference with these things too. The inkbird app is passable at best, id be sus on the aldi app too.

Aldi is great. Takes up less cupboard space, goes straight in the bin

  • Just bought one of these, app link leads to a 404. GJ aldi

  • Yeah I can't download the app either 404page not found

  • Link for the android app is wang.gaowa.net/bbq_v1.0.4.apk

  • I just bought this thermometer and am suprised practically the whole probe needs to be inserted into the meat. Does this mean it won’t work for steaks & chops? Even some smaller chickens might not be suitable for this device. Pretty disappointing!!!
    Any thoughts on this???

    • I used mine on some steaks today and didn't have an issue. It'd have to be a pretty small cut not to be able to insert the probe in ~10cm?

      • Great. The manual says the probe needs to be inserted “beyond Safety Insertion Line” which seems to be 70 - 80mm. I hope I’m missing something.

        • I pushed mine in up to the line - no dramas. As I said, it'd have to be a teeny tiny cut in order not to be able to achieve this? Anything smaller you could use an instant probe.

          • @gyrex: I’m definitely missing something. With a steak do you put it through from the side? Maybe I’ve been doing wrong my whole life ha. With past thermometers I’ve always just pushed the “prob” half way into the steak from the top - maybe 10mm depending on thickness. Anyway thanks for your response. Looking forward to trying it now.

            • @Mark84: I see where the confusion lies now - yep, it goes through the side of the steak :) I get my steaks cut at 40mm (quite thick) and reverse sear them.

  • I managed to scoop a couple of these up today - does anyone know how to turn the damned things off? As far as I can tell they continue to keep broadcasting and chewing the battery. I've tried putting them back in the case but they still broadcast bluetooth.

    • I noticed same…. Annoying. I just turned off notifications. Just commenting to see if you get any proper replies😃

      • Yeh, that persistent notification was super annoying too. I disabled this as well. It's more to do with the thermometer continuing to broadcast bluetooth signals and draining the battery. I might try calling the support line to find out how to turn the thermometer off. There's no mention of it in the manual unless I missed it.
