Anyone know if this can be used with a ps4 pro without any issues?

    • +10

Can be used with a PS4 Pro no issues

    • +7

Even though Ema000 has said so, yep, 100% no issues using one of these with a PS4 Pro as an internal drive replacement.

  • Thanks Op. Bought 1 to upgrade my current SSD.

  • My HP desktop comes with an SSD but it looks generic? SK Hynix… Does anyone know if this is a better option?

  • Does anyone know of external SSD in larger sizes such as 6TB? Thanks.

Do you mean something like this? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/234130581939

      • +2

Very different use case. The MX500 is a consistently fast drive with DRAM, while the mentioned Samsung uses QLC flash that is generally slower and not really intended for use a main drive.

        • +3

Yes that's right, but I assumed @jpmelb7 was just after a higher capacity SSD, they didn't mention a use case in their question

          • @Ema000: Well both would be ideal. High capacity that is fast.

        • I mean… the QVO has dram too. I use a 2TB model as my games drive and am happy

  • Are these any good to stick in a case and use on an Xbox One for game storage?

    • This will be good to upgrade SATA disks. Get a cheap M2 SSD like kingston nv2 with enclosure should do better job

      • Why would the M2 do a better job than an standard SSD? Thanks.

        • as the M2 SSDs are having higher speed than SATA interface, plus it is cheaper.

          • +1

@bond008: Depends on how they're connecting the SSD. Also M.2 is just the physical connection: you can get M.2 SATA SSDs (my laptop at home has one as the boot drive). You're thinking of M.2 NVMe SSDs.

USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 = yes M.2 NVMe SSD would be better than SATA SSD
            USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 = maybe
Anything else (USB 3 / 3.1, USB 2, etc) = no. NVMe SSD would be a waste, unless you were looking at using it on USB 3.2 Gen 2 or greater devices as well or in the near future.

Also depends on price as you've said - some NVMe SSDs are cheaper (and better) than SATA SSDs, depending on pricing at the time. But keep in mind that some NVMe drives can perform worse than SATA drives. Stick to reputable manufacturers, and watch out for component swaps.

          • @bond008: XBox One and Series S|X only supports USB 3.2 gen 1 (aka USB 3.0). As such, m.2 NVMe SSDs won't be able to use their higher bandwidth as an advantage.

Kingston NV2 has component lottery, if one ended up getting the QLC version, there is a good chance it won't perform as well as MX500 (TLC).

It's puzzling why Series S|X doesn't support USB 3.2 gen 2. Weirdly, WD released an USB 3.2 gen 2 SSD for XBox Series S|X though that SSD's write speed after SLC cache is depleted is inferior to MX500, even in USB 3.2 gen 2 mode.

m.2 does support m.2/SATA so it's best to mention m.2 NVMe. I do have a QLC m.2 NVMe SSD which performs worse than MX500.

    • Yes this SSD would be good to place in an external enclosure and use it as external game storage for an Xbox One. You can also use it to upgrade the internal storage of the Xbox One, however, that process is a lot more complicated.

      • +1

+1, I recommend replacing the internal drive. Sure it's a bit more work, but it also makes the whole system and UI much snappier to use.

  • Amazon is $149 it seems. So this deal is still slightly cheaper.

  • are these QLC now or TLC?

    • +1

      Just don't go chasing waterfalls..

    • +1

3D TLC with 2GB DRAM, 700 TBW but reports suggest it can be much greater than this, MTBF of 1.8 Million Hours

    • +1

Likely TLC. There is a report that there is 1 batch of MX500 2TB that's QLC. However, one OZBer insists there is no concrete proof on that claim and 1 case reported doesn't count (because that person claims his friend has one that's QLC).

    This ssd is great!

I use it as an external drive for my xbox series x and a StarTech USB 3.1 (10Gbps) Adapter Cable for 2.5" SATA SSD/HDD Drives. Works exceptionally well.

    • Don't understand why Microsoft elected to keep Series X's USB ports as USB 3.0 (USB 3.2 gen 1) like XBox One. The included AMD APU is certainly capable of supporting USB 3.2 gen 2 (10Gbps).

      • To save money, same reason why the got rid optical, HDMI in and IR out. When you add up millions of consoles the $2 saved here and there add up. I do agree with you hopefully they up their USB game on the pro model if there is one and next gen. There should at least be 1 USBC on the front as well.

    • Does your series X keep the external USB drive ON while powered off?

      • In the settings you can select if it turns off while the console is off or stay on, I've had it so it stays on and it stays on when the console is off.

  • These are good, got one in 2021 for $199.
Works fine as my data/working drive (OneDrive and games etc).
