Was trying to find a recent promo code for purchasing travel insurance for my upcoming Japan trip, and found a working code on an old fb post.

Get a 15% discount and do your part to contribute to protect Australia's Daintree rainforest.

For reference, a 10-day trip for two travellers costs $206, bought down to $175.10 with the code.

Facebook post:

Queensland's Daintree Rainforest has been growing for hundreds of millions of years. The entire Lowland tropical rainforest of the Daintree is now tragically listed as endangered and is under constant threat of illegal clearing and settlement. 🥺
When you buy a travel insurance policy with Freely this summer using code SUMMER15, you will receive a 15% discount, AND a part of your purchase will go to Rainforest 4 Foundation to help them protect the Daintree rainforest and expand the Daintree National Park. 🌴🦜🌺 🌴🦜🌺

  • Whats the difference between this and the free CBA insurance if you have a credit card?

    • +5

Probably for those that don't pay by credit card or don't have complimentary insurance on their cards.

    • From what I've found, cheap insurance is exactly the same as CC insurance.

Expensive stuff can give you some more benefits, coverage and less excess but you're generally doubling the price to get that. So up to you.

      • You'd need to compare the PDS, but from personal experience I've had no issue with the CBA coverage - it paid for a 2 week extension to my Bali holiday back when that volcano went off and grounded all the planes.

    • There is no one answer. You need to compare PDS.

    • Pretty sure CBA insurance offers no cover if you have cancellations due to COVID.

You are covered for Hospital visits and care related to COVID, but if for example you miss a flight due to COVID, you are not covered on CBA. From their website:

As of 10 August 2022, our International Travel Insurance included with eligible cards will include overseas emergency medical expenses cover related to COVID-19.
Note: There is no cover for cancellation claims related to COVID-19.

As for Freely, I believe their PDS says that they do cover cancellations due to COVID, if you book your trip at least 21 days in advance and are forced to cancel it due to COVID, they should cover you. Edit: That said it does look like their excess goes up to 500 for COVID related stuff.

For reference, a 10-day trip for two travellers costs $206, bought down to $175.10 with the code.

For reference, I paid $68.61 Tick Travel, owned by Europ Assistance of the Generali Group, to insure 2 adults and a child for 16 days in Tokyo this last June (underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo).

    • Did you have to use it? Most people never have to use it, but when they do, they realise it can be very limited.

      • No, we didn't. But I checked the T&C's, and felt the higher covers were just bells and whistles; Mitsui's basic insurance covered the bulk of it.

    • Really? I'm getting more than that for a week long domestic trip (on the highest level of cover). More than SCTI which covers more and is more reputable.

      • on the highest level of cover

That explains it. Do you need it? I checked the T&C's, and felt higher covers were just bells and whistles (like private insurance used to only add aromatherapy and massages in Australia).

        and is more reputable

More than 150-y/o Sumitomo Mitsui and 192-y/o Generali Group??

        • +1

I did the highest level just to make it a more even for a quick comparison. I'll review more closely when actually buying

SCTI is well reviewed and I've personally had excellent experience (pretty sure most others would have rejected my claim for lack of supporting evidence) with them so they're my default but I'll look at Tick more closely.

        • They're more than "bells and whistles". Basic doesn't cover you for cancellation for one, which is significant if you need to cancel for any reason prior to the trip e.g unemployment, medical issues, including in family and other changes of circumstance. It also doesn't cover you for disruption during the travel e.g. again family emergencies.

It's fine if you decide you don't need/want that, or the trip is simple and short enough you choose to exclude but it's far from comparing to something like aromatherapy, due to the financial exposure such issues can equally cause.

          • @odysseus:

Basic doesn't cover you for cancellation for one

On a $285 RT ticket?? Yep, bells and whistles for me. All I need is hospital cover; that's where the big bucks come in. Anything else is aromatherapy =D

Travel insurance is such a pain since you really need to actually read the PDS, no other insurance type really needs this since its all pretty much the same across providers (or at least the differences are straightforward and called out) while travel insurance can differ a fair bit and its not easy to tell just by looking at what they advertise.

  • freely is owned by cover more.

  • PDS PDS & PDS. Most cheap insurances exclude the hell out of shit (or cap the cover by xx amount). It is not worth going with discounted insurer simply because you need a lawyer to read the PDS who will charge $250 or more anyway and then tell you to stay away from them. Best to go with a reputed company & get proper travel insurance.

  • Thanks OP, was just about to purchase via this site for my upcoming trip anyway. Saved me 15% :)

  • I've found that if you wanna cover any sort of high valued items like your laptop or camera, freely is pretty much more expensive than anything else…

  • Has anyone used and claimed with this company? First time I've heard of them

  • Can anyone give any recommendations for a company to cover 2 adults and a childbunder 2yr old, for a week long trip to the snow in Charlotte's Pass this September?

Ideally with medical cover for Sking and Snowboarding.

    • No Medicare?

      • I have medicare, i just assumed i would need extra cover for sports like that. But now I say it out loud - it doesnt make much sense.

I checked out Tick Travel (Domestic) that you recommend and im happy with the prices. I just double guessed it because it said: Medical Cover: Nil. Even for the premium.

Is medical cover typically international only?

        • +1

Bc you're already covered by Medicare, that's why.
