Ozito PXC 36V Brushless Steel Deck Lawn Mower $399 (Was $499) + $50 Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Bunnings

1460

I've had my eye on this one for a while, very well reviewed and can cut decent length grass without a struggle.

Unlike the cheapies, this is normal mower size, has a steel frame and a dual charger for the 2 batteries.

Not much else to say - hope someone finds this useful!

I'd guess they would break it if removing every time, I just leave the key in it and there's no reason it would break. Can't see why you'd remove the key, if you don't leave the batteries in it then it won't start anyway

      • I take the key out as I need to lift the mower to store it, and worried it start and cuts finders off. I attached a piece of string to the key and it's long enough so key can be kept in the battery compartment unplugged.

        • +9

Umm, take batteries out for charging and it won't be starting anyhow? Also lighter to lift

    • Someone else mentioned using a popsicle stick.

    • +1

I have literally never taken the key out.

But out of curiosity, I just took it out now, and it is a two pronged plastic key that seems pretty strong. I tried to bend it, and then stabbed a hole in a carboard box. The key is fine, and I can't imagine any way to break it in normal use, or even pretty abnormal use.

    • see my comment above

  • Damn just got my victa corvette 500 working.. all it needed was a new spark plug.. beast though…

  • Is there a mulching version? So much easier than having to catch the grass.

    • +2

I have this and don't use the catcher. The clippings are pretty well chopped up. Some build up at the catcher exit but then they just get swirled around and chopped up and fed out the bottom. No doubt a mulching mower would do a slightly better job, but this one is perfectly fine IMO.

  • +4

Excellent mower (well, actually I have the self-propelled version) though this seems to have been the usual RRP??

    Thoughts about mine:

    • Use with 4x 18V 4.0Ah batteries - will do a good 200 m2 of grass, then transition to a line trimmer with two batteries to edge a 700m2 property boundaries and garden features, then run a 36v blower on high with the other 2 batteries - fantastic.

An ego set would be slightly better but woudl have set you back $2k+. My whole set (self propelled mower, 36v blower, 36v line trimmer was about $600!)

    • The fabric catcher - I love it sometimes and absolutely hate it when the grass is damp…probably shouldnt be cutting with wet grass I guess
    • The steel deck is fantastic if youre stripping weeds and have rocks to think about
    • Definiltey maintain the blades for optimum cutting and try not to cut wet grass (this is true for all mowers)
    • The self-propelled feature - I love it when I need it but it makes the mower very heavy - I presume this non-self-propelled one is much lighter which would probably be better (only the self-propelled was available when I was in the market)
    • It can be collapsed and lifted up and stowed away - awesome!
    • I've now successfully replaced all my petrol equipment and will absolutely NEVER go back again.
    • Hotdamn! You are selling me quite hard here…… I will wait a little longer for a robotic GPS mower without silly wires but I may snap one of these days. My petrol mower is only 5 years old. It will probably last another 15 years though. :(

  • It's coming up as full price for me. Expired or is it because I'm on mobile?

    • Still $399…

      • Maybe State limited?

I jumped on PC and it came up as $399 without my store set. If I set it to a store in NSW it jumps to $499

EDIT: Nevermind. Not a state thing, just a weird location thing. If I set it to a central coast (nsw) store it's $499. Set it to a Sydney (NSW) store and it's $399

    • I've been looking at it for about 6 months and Bunnings Fountain Gate has always been this price.

  • Need a bit of advice. Haven't had a big backyard/frontyard before so got help on airtasker a few times for mowing but the cost is adding up ($150ish every 2 months).

The grass atm has grown a bit long, so my understanding is that in addition to a lawn mower like this one, I'll need a cordless grass trimmer as well?

    • Line trimmer for around trees, along garden/fence/house edges. If you don't have trees to go around or garden beds and it's just a patch of grass you can spray the fence/house line with Zero or something and kill the grass there and have no need for a trimmer

    • Depending on the size you could get away with just a line trimmer all up. I have the ozito line trimmer at work and do the front nature strips just with that(be about 30-40m2).

    • +1

Battery mowers are great but it depends on the variety of grass you have and how often you mow.
In spring you will need to mow once a week with any battery mower no matter how expensive (i have 2 egos that are way more expensive and powerful that this mower)

  • +1

Mine is coming up to 5 years and still going strong. But I remember it was going for $259?

  • Am leaning towards buying it - is returning easy if I find it to be not good enough after a few tries with debris and all it may accumulate

    • Good question. The law says you can return if the product is not fit for its intended purpose. Does a mower that's not mowing your lawn satisfactorily count? It should but what does Bunnings do in such cases?

      • Yeah, I have returned smaller items after using in the past but never a big one. Even with the smaller ones, depending on the store, they have a whole line of questioning and checks before accepting the return. Was able to return everytime though. But again, bigger risk with this one

        • +2

EGO have a 30 day return policy but much more expensive.

EGO Power+ Mower 30 Day Money Back Guarantee

If you are not satisfied with your purchase of an EGO Power+ walk behind Mower in Australia or New Zealand for any reason, you can return it within 30 days from date of purchase for a full refund provided you have purchased it from an authorised EGO Power+ Dealer.

          • +1

@shaybisc: Ive got 2 ego mowers and although good they are far from perfect. I wish they would listen to what the consumers want.

  • Is there a skin-only version of this?

  • +2

Okay, let me provide a fuller review of this mower, copied paste from an earlier Ozbargain post on mower.

My lawn is about 150sqm of couch and mowed at height 2 on this mower, which I'm guessing is about 30mm. Thatch is managed by scarifying.

TLDR: Design flaws, poor parts availability and support as it is a promo item.

The whing: The catcher is too low and creates resistance as it is dragged through the grass. It gets worse as it fills up, requiring constant emptying or it would feel like I'm plowing the land. I can't use the lowest cutting height at all and even the 2nd lowest gets stuck regularly, scalping the lawn.
Doesn't have mulch chute, so mowing without the draggy catcher is no better as the clippings just accumulate under the deck and chokes the blade.

The 2 plastic knobs that holds the collapsible handle, and the height adjustment lever are protruding from the sides and get caught on bushes and walls.

One knob needed replacement as the plastic's cracked.
Bunnings special order (tried 3 different Bunnings) couldn't find the part number for it and I had to contact Ozito to get a design drawing.
Even so, Bunnings claims the part number does not exist in their system and sent me their version of the drawing. Turns out, Bunnings merged the knob and the screw and gave it a new parts number. And basically sold me an additional overpriced screw.
Didn't help that the manual calls it an "upper handle knob" but the part's real name is "star handle nut". For a bloody TRIANGULAR knob. Entire process took MONTHS to get a knob that Bunning could've just taken from a display.

Replacement blades are also non-standard and took months to arrive so I was mowing with a loose crooked handle and worn out blade (doesn't hold the edge anymore after sharpening) for months.
The much touted 5yrs warranty didn't help at all as the knob and blade are not covered.

Have since stopped folding the handle down and stuck protective foam on the protruding nuts.

    • So this is actually a Bunnings exclusive model?

And the 5 year warranty is a bit rough if those items are not included.

  • +2

Cutting diameter is 46cm, for those who wonder.

  • +2

Amazing how many people made negative notes for the catcher with wet grass..

You are not supposed to mow wet grass anyway, it can rust and dull the blades and it gunks up the underbody. I don’t think any catcher is immune from the wet grass issue anyway.

  • +2

This won't cut my couch grass (tifftuff). Wet obviously won't do anything but even when it's dry it really struggles to cut down level by level. Keeps cutting out

Bought an Ego and its all good now. Even when wet

    • +1

This is because Bunnings and cheap mowers omit detailing the most important spec of any mower… Engine torque.

CC, RPM and Torque are all different. All manufacturers may use different terminology such as Stihl vs Husqvarna.
I could tune a 160cc engine to either be 2900, 3200 or 3600RPM. but RPM doesn't mean more torque delivered to the blades as the engine may not handle it, it will eventually cut out or just rev off its tits with no performance gain.

  • +6

I have this. After my first mow I was basically trying to convince everyone to run and get one. Have a 900sq block with the back being pretty much all grass.
Can get 2 mows out of the batteries but they charge pretty quickly with the included charger anyway. Paid this price Nov 2021.
I actually like the catcher too. It's like magic with how much it can cram in there before spilling out the side. Have Canberra blend canturf and never had an issue cutting it

    • +2

2nd this comment with basically the same experience. This mower is good stuff.

  • Has anyone used Greenworks before? I am in the market for a mower. Currently have a 36v ozito. Not satisfied with that. Is this any good? Considering Ego as well.

    • Did you buy the Greenworks? Gone up $200 today. Jeez it's heavy. You wouldn't want the propulsion to cut out.

      • No I didnt buy it. The price has gone back to $949 now. I think it was $899 in store. Thats the regular price.Regarding weight, all of the high end mowers are heavy around 30kgs especially with steel deck and heavy batteries. Hoping for a deal on ego.

  • Does anyone have advice for replacing the blades? I’ve been ‘sharpening’ them with a flappy disc on my angle grinder for the last year but they aren’t great.

Is it easy enough to order a replacement? Is it a special order item?

Are there any other brands that are compatible?

    Thanks.

    • +4

You can't sharpen blades. The heat causes them to crack and split. It makes the metal brittle.

People think they need blades as sharp as a Japanese knife and it's just not the case. You're cutting grass blades. Even nylon cord on a brush cutter will cut grass even on a very low speed.

      • +2

Absolutely not true - mower blades can and should be sharpened.

A sharp blade is important for grass health, as it cuts cleanly and minimises tearing. It also looks a lot nicer and reduces the energy needed to cut the grass, so you can cut faster without the mower slowing down.

Re: blades getting brittle from sharpening - you have the physics backwards. The typical concern with overheating blades when sharpening them is tempering, which is making them softer. To make them brittle, they need to be hardened, which is an involved process that needs prolonged high temperatures and quenching.

Mower blades are designed to be relatively tough, so are not very hard to begin with. The very minor amount of heat from sharpening them is not enough to make any appreciable reduction to the hardness of the blade.

    • +2

Ignore the advice re: not sharpening the blades. Sharpening with a flappy disk is fine. You might get a better edge with a file, but I doubt it is worth the extra effort.

The blade is part number 300049101926. You need to talk to / email / call the special orders desk.

The blade has a hole and a slot each side of the central hole, so you'd need a blade with the same setup. I can't spot any, so probably it would be hard to find compatible brands without resorting to modifications.

For reference, this is the blade - https://assets.einhell.com/im/imf/y400/926_150961/3000491012…

      • +1

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know sharpening blades will make lawn cutting easier and put less strain on the mower (ie - batteries will have longer run time) . Its easy to do and they dont need to be super sharp.

  • Are there any discounted Bunnings giftcards I can stack? Doesn't seem like they be do that much ever has been so far?

  • Garden equipment has faced a 100% increase in the last 12 months alone.

One brand which I won't mention increased the price of their mowers from $2000 to $4500 in one go.

Even a HRU196 is now $1300 and that's entry level..
A GOOD mower self propelled 21" will be $2000+ now. Best advice: wait for the Scag 21" self propelled due any week now. If you own the 30" you won't be sold but these are solid.

P.S avoid Victa they're garbage now.. ran the commercial 19" and it blew up in 3 months.

  • +1

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/677483 bought the self propelled model PXSPSDMK-4182 $399 less 5%with powerpass - Feb 2022 , agree need extra pair batteries if got a decent yard. Mrs now does the mowing - so win win.

    • +2

I always avoid using Powerpass on any OZITO tools as multiple staff warned me this reduce the warranty to 12 months, as OZITO is supposed to be a household/DIY brand, using powerpass makes it tradie use thus reduce the warranty significantly.

      • Same with Ryobi. Even the Ryobi reps use Milwaukee. All owned by the same company.

  • I got the self powered one, think it was a year ago. Doesn’t cut low enough so I hardly use it. Wish I could take it back but think I missed that wagon!

    • Say due to lack of torque it cuts out. They won't be able to test that so they'll have to refund.

Once they do promise me one thing, you'll never ever buy a mower from Bunnings again.

I do over 232 properties within a 10km radius and I guarantee atleast 100 have an ozito or Ryobi mower in their garage and I'm there with a good mower mowing their lawns at $150.
      I'm there every 3 weeks.

If you shop at Bunnings, you will need someone like me.

Bunnings has a few cyclone products now suitable for the gardens, but that's all and I own $22,000 worth of gardening tools.

      • +1

More a case of they are foolish to the point that they either dont know how to maintain their lawn, or they dont know what lawn they have. Likely both. If you know you need to cut low there is no excuse for buying a mower that is not suitable. I have this mower for a few years now, have owned several other petrol before, and its fantastic on our buffalo. No dramas at all. One of the best $400 i've spent.

      • Thanks Neo, good idea!
I knew it didn’t go low before purchase but knew there was a hack (a 3D printed part) out there to put under the blade but never got around to it
It’s not too bad, does an ok job but despite the try-hard bagging below I didn’t have the $$$ at the time & had hurt my back so needed a self propelled

      • Oh sorry was gonna ask Neo, what brand do you have? Is it petrol/electric/self powered?

        • +1

We have to use petrol due to mowing all day.
I'll be purchasing the 21" scag when they land.
Right now we use Honda 19" HRU196. You can mow in the wet with these.

I'd recommend searching marketplace for any mower which uses a Honda GVC160cc engine. Hard to blow up and powerful once tuned. Just move the spring to the other position to increase RPM - Takes 2 minutes. They're easy to service and parts are relatively cheap.
You can even tackle waist height jungles with them.

Fun fact I started my business on a Victa 82v mower line trimmer and blower!

  • Has anyone used this vs aeg? I was going to get aeg brushless kit 2x18v as I have some batteries already. mower for $900 + bonus item available on online promotion (ie trimmer).

    • I bought this one after considering the AEG. The reason i didn't buy the AEG is the blade is set too high up under the mower. But i did buy an AEG trimmer and got the bonus battery.

  • +4

I have this one - it's great. Had it for almost 3 yrs now (got the 2x3Ah batts kit, 4Ah are better). I mow any length couch, 120m2, no problem on 2x3Ah. And, this cuts 5mm shorter than the mulching/self-propelled one - which makes a very big difference. Weighs about 20kg.Only neg: on lowest cut, it can be overwhelmed on one 'spongy' patch of my lawn and cut out. Other times, it revs up and deals with it.

  • +1

Looks like more of YESs from comment section. Wonder if this is normal price or a deal? And do I need a specific charger for this?

  • +1

The thing with most new mowers is the shitty fabric catchers, the moistue and uv must destroy them right?

    • Fabric catches clog in the wet. They're hard to clean and tare when rocks hit them. Plastic is always better but impossible to find on a self propelled. It's because they need more air due to being a half chute as the gearbox takes half the room.

If Honda made the 216 with a plastic catcher it would be the perfect mower!

  • +3

OK i will put my two cent worth's in here as well. I have had this mower long enough to use it twice and to be honest I had my doubts as to whether it would be any good.
I have about 500sq/m to cut and the first time i used it there were plenty of thick patches, if you hit the thick patch going to fast before the mower has a chance to increase the RPM it would almost stall but once the RPM have picked up it's fine. I mowed the entire lawn on one set of batteries just, but the second time i mowed I still had 2 bars left on the batteries. I did buy a second set of batteries for when summer gets here.

I don't like the wheels I am waiting for them to fall off.

I don't have a problem with the catcher

My grass in the back yard is really thick kikuyu and i think i have it on the third from the top which is about the same as what my old petrol mower was on.

They have updated the key to a better design with metal pins

The blade is a special order so I have already bought one it took less than a week and cost about $34.00

  • It was also $399 before the price hike

  • these are nice electric mowers.

  • I had this mower for a year or two.
No complaints other than wish it had a mulcher attachment.
No issues at all, other than my son pranking me a few times by hiding the key on me when I empty the catcher.

  • OK, So I have the cheapest crappiest plastic version of the Ozito 2x18v Battery lawn mower (The one that comes in the budget pack).
Had it for over 12 months now.
We use two sets of batteries to do our whole front and back yards (Sizeable 4x2 Perth house but not huge)
It doesn't jam unless we are stupid and expect too much from it.
Pretty much can do our lawn in one go (Doesn't need to be done in two passes).
We also do the entire edges with the cheapest crappiest Ozito whipper snipper that came in the package (Brick edges and all). We go through one of the little plastic blades each day (but they are cheap as chips so who cares).

So for all those saying this is not going to be good is expecting way too much! :D

  • Wonder whether this sort of thing could be modded for it to do Lawn aereation (coring)…..

  • +1

I have mowed knee high dense weeds with this, goes great. Dynamically increases revs if you hit dense stuff. Only time it played up was when wet grass had clogged the underside which was a 2 minute fix.

  • How long does this sale last?

    • The mowers normally sell out fairly quickly.

  • Can you stand it upright like the Ryobi?

    • No. Check the manual on the Bunnings website

  • +1

I purchased one today. Wife is happy she has a Father’s Day gift organised now

  • +2

I wanted to keep my batteries handy so i created a home for them.
    https://photos.app.goo.gl/JizDBYDPQ2vixGcS9

    • Looks cool and is convenient for sure…but with the amount of people prowling and break-ins are you not worried someone will just wander into your back yard one night and take them?

      • That's always a possibility and I would not leave them out there if we were to be away from the house for longer than the day.

  • +1

just bought this its amazing! soooo light as well and quiet

  • For people that got this one, how does this perform compared to the self propelling one? Does this also have the limitation on how low it can cut the grass?
