  • Great deal. I would however try for the USB-C version if possible

    • In waiting for that one to go on sale!

    VA panel.

    • Should be ok due to the curve - no?

    • VA is bad for fast past gaming… its fine for static gaming like RTS, web, work or watching shows and movies but anything with fast past FPS its trash. The ghosting is shocking .. its all about the black to white transition being slow on VA.. you can notice it most on black backgrounds with white text. it's a flaw in the technology just like IPS doesn't have super dark blacks

Hmm I think you're generalising these types of panels. I say this as the RTINGS review (a well regarded source) rates it for gaming as 8.2 (out of 10). Do you have any info you can share that contradicts this being a solid choice for gaming? I'm also saying this as I've had one of these since late last year and frequently play Warzone 2.0 on it…

        • +3

Yeah VAs used to generally be not great but now there are high end VA panels that are quite similar to fast IPS panels.

        • +1

VA panel monitors have slow black to gray pixel transition speed, resulting in noticeable trailing behind fast-moving objects in dark scenes – this is often referred to as dark level smearing.

This is a fundamental weakness of VA technology

Even the best of the best $800 VA Samsung Odyssey g7 still has a tini bit of smearing.

          • +3

@vid_ghost: I understand but you're still generalising all VA panels to a degree. Again RTINGS is a trusted source and the Samsung Odyssey G7 definitely isn't the best of the best VA panels when it comes to gaming (Yes, RTINGS tested that one too and other VA panels receive a better gaming score).

BTW I upgraded from a Dell S2721DGF (IPS panel) to the S3422DWG and I prefer the S3422DWG and there's no noticeable ghosting issues etc that I can detect in MW2/Warzone 2.0 and Fortnite - both are very fast paced shooters.

        • Yeah I wouldn't go for it personally because I hate black smear when scrolling text on dark backgrounds but purely for gaming this could be decent. If you're playing FPS at high refresh rates you could use black frame insertion for better motion clarity, though the range is very limited and it isn't compatible with variable refresh so you'd want to turn down settings where possible to achieve a locked frame rate.

        • What sort of FPS are you getting with WZ2 and what video card you using to drive the monitor? Looking to upgrade my 24" 1080p to this one but unsure if my 3080 can handle it. Any crazy smearing in wz2 that you notice?

        • +1

You can notice the black on white streaking on the S3422DWG if you want to look for it, otherwise you forget about it, occasionally I'll be playing a game and at a particular moment I'll notice it and then I'll remember it does that, but most of the time you forget about it.

The profile and settings you have set can make a difference, I actually run the profile and settings suggested by Rtings.

IPS would be better even just for colours, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice screen space

OLED sounds more interesting, but then there's the screen burn in.

It's too bad the P3421W can't do 144hz and HDR

      • If you’re doing photo editing as well as gaming VA isn’t great for that either.
I suppose the only panel that would do both well is OLED..

        • Non organic oled is the future.. :) almost no burn in with that tech

          • +3

            @vid_ghost: Non-organic organic LED

            • @Diji: Its a real tech.. its being worked on

          • @vid_ghost: MicroLED?

          • @vid_ghost: How can there be non-organic when the O literally stands for organic? It's it just an LED then? Maybe it should be Inorganic LED, ILED.

    • There's always one lol

I wish Dell still sold the G3223Q, they don't have a single 4K 144Hz monitor for purchase anymore.

    • +1

Edit: It's back now on the website.

      • I think I checked yesterday or the day before and it wasn't there, thanks.

Now we just need another sale…

        Edit. Oh that's USA website…

        • +1

          It's on the AUS website.

          • @Ezio: Ah thanks, looks like they just changed the URL for the Aus website. Yeah at $800, I'll definitely need to wait for another sale.

Play MW2 on this panel with a 3080Ti and no issue doing 144Hz. Great panel for gaming and work/productivity applications.

Just had one replaced until warranty (input change was started having issues; jumping from DP to HDMI), and Dell overnighted me a replacement to WA and paid for returns.

For 500-odd AUD, its hard to fault.

Just wish it had more than 1x DP input…

You can get it for $505.38 without the student code by following OP's instructions here for a 7% off code.

Have this monitor and love it. Using the Rtings calibration and overdrive recommendations and ghosting is so minimal. I play competitive CSGO and OW2 and it hasn't bothered me at all - this is coming from an IPS panel previously.

  • +2

Need some 4k or 5k2k Ultrasharp deals.

    • Yeah 5k2k at this size would be ideal for work.

  • Bought this a year ago, roughly, after using an IPS panel which I bought back in 2015. There's more ghosting than I was used to (typically moving windows around on the desktop), as mentioned in other comments, but at the same time I haven't noticed it during any FPS gaming. Will have a look into the Rtings settings mentioned above and see if there's any difference. That said, for ~$500, I have no complaints - it's a great monitor. If you want something better, then you simply pay more :)

  • +1

black smearing very bad on this one
best response time setting is super fast as fast is ungodly slow and extreme has extreme overshoot on lighter colours. The BFI image on rtings looks good but in reality there's severe ghosting AND inverse ghosting
any sort of high contrast patterns panning on the screen also look absolutely awful on any setting
i would NOT recommend this monitor if you're a sweaty gamer

    • Not trying to be a prick but what makes you think you know better than RTINGS? I posted the review above. What are you qualifications relevant to being able to make that statement? I'll also add that I've had this monitor since late last year and exclusively played Fortnite and MW2/Warzone 2.0 and I don't have any complaints. I haven't even tried the RTINGS ICC profile yet!

      • -2

By looking at the UFO test rtings use with my eyeballs

        • Haha nice man (I didn't downvote your comment btw). Your comments are unfounded though - I'm not the only one here who actually has this monitor and has the same view of it's quality for gaming as RTINGS does.

  • +3

I've had this for about a year and a half and am more than happy. I haven't noticed the ghosting issues others mention but I'm not usually playing shooters/high-intensity games where it would be more evident. Would buy again

    • it is not.

      • It was but now sold out again

        • this model - G3223D is now removed from Dell website.

  • Wasn’t this same price last year

Is there any decent price 34" Ultrawide IPS monitor?
Most I can find are around the 1k price tag.

    • I'm also looking for one and the only one that ticked all the boxes for me (34" Ultrawide 1440P 144Hz Curved IPS at a decent price) was the LG 34GN850 for $839, and that deal was two months ago sadly.

  • +2

Picked one of these up back in 2021 for $495.20. Played WoW, CoD: MW, MW2 and various other games. Been very happy with the performance of it. Seems like a good price for it. I also used the Rtings calibration for mine.

  • Any thoughts on Dell (& other major brands) after seeing this AUD 10million fine slapped by ACCC in Australia?

Personally own few Dell products from Ozbargain post and love them haha!

  • Is this monitor gsync compatible?

    • +1

Although it's not officially certified as G-SYNC Compatible, it's possible to enable G-SYNC when using this monitor with an NVIDIA graphics card, but only over DisplayPort. Unfortunately, there are some issues when using this monitor in G-SYNC compatible mode. As long as your frame rate stays above 60fps, you won't have any issues. If it drops below that, there's significant flickering that gets worse as the frame rate drops.

This is an excerpt from rtings related to gsync compatibility.

      • Thank you! That's good to know about the flickering.

Are there any g-sync compilable monitors in a similar price range or should I just disable gsync?

        • +1

I use it with NVIDIA RTX2070 laptop with no issues. But my games are in the 60+fps bracket, rocket league, racing simulators. In normal usage, I haven't faced any issues. I don't even know how to toggle gsync, haven't changed it ever. If it's required, I enable the vsync option in-game.

You can check the gigabyte m34q which is a bit different but supports gsync. Here's the comparison between the two: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/dell-s3422dwg-v…

          • @av8: That's really helpful. Thank you again.

You mentioned racing simulators - do you play F1? I currently run a 32" 3840x2160 for F1 but fps isn't great at high graphic settings. This monitor might let me push it bit harder given the lower pixels

Most of the other games I play are in the 60+ fps bracket.

            • @DevlicK: I'm yet to get F1. Thinking of getting game pass. I play Assetto Corsa Competizione, Assetto Corsa, have a few more but very irregular with them. Just started these as well, so very new in this genre.

Definitely this would be easier on gpu than a 4k display. My games run at higher fps compared to 27" 4k monitor I've used before.
