    • Not questioning TanedaR, RT-AC68U recently got new firmware in July 2023. so, is it new firmware got new features without security updates? I am confused after seeing EOL list.

Latest firmware is dated 2023/05/25, just 3 months old.

OP, this isn't a modem, it is just a router. It won't work on FTTN connections.

  • +1

Does anyone know what's a good modem/router combo for FTTN connections? All I see it router deals but nothing that has a VDSL modem built-in.

    • Wanted to know the same

Recently bought a TP-Link Archer VR2800 a few weeks ago to replace an aging Nighthawk D7000 that was having intermittent internet dropouts from "DoS attacks". Hasn't missed a beat since I plugged it in.

      @montorola @J B S Here are some VDSL2 modem/router all-in-ones for nbn FTTN and FTTB.

VDSL2 modem/router SOS and ROC support SRA support
      ASUS DSL-AX82U Yes Yes
AVM FRITZ!Box 7530 AX Yes Yes
      AVM FRITZ!Box 7590 AX V2 Yes Yes
TP-Link Deco X20-DSL Yes with firmware update Yes
      TP-Link Deco X73-DSL Planned Yes

Note: Make sure you install the latest firmware. Enable SOS, ROC and SRA in the VDSL2 modem settings if it gives you the option. TP-Link SOS, ROC and SRA article.

@Twix Thanks heaps for doing that! Are these modems ok for HFC NBN connections?

        • +1

The nbn NTD for HFC is a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. Don't purchase an all-in-one VDSL2 modem/router for HFC. All you need is a router or router with Wi-Fi for HFC and plug it into the nbn NTD.

Don't worry about SOS and ROC since it doesn't apply to HFC.

          • +1

@Twix: Perfect! Thanks for that Twix

      • +1

@Twix what exactly does these new settings i.e. SOS (Save Our Showtime) and ROC (Robust Overhead Channel) actually do?

      • +1

Thanks for that @Twix . Just updated my Archer VR2100 due to your info. I also found lots of info here re SOS/ROC etc too: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/9m01v6rv

    • all the asus DSL model can do the job

      • Can confiem dsl-ac68u

    • Unless there's major space constraint, just dumpster dive or check out a Cashies a ISP modem/router combo and configure it as a modem only in bridge mode, and hook a better router onto it. No point in getting another piece of shit due for landfill

Thanks OP- got one to extend the AI mesh into the garage.

  • Worth it for AI mesh? I currently use the ASUS Lyra Trio mesh things.

    Thanks!

    • +1

Do you need an additional node? Lyra should do the job no problem.

This will work fine as long as you're not connecting too many devices to it.

      • Sometimes it's a bit flaky but that could be the devices connected to it.

        Thanks I'll save myself $50!

        • Is it only certain areas of the house? You can download apps/programs to check the wifi signal strength as well.

          • @HomebrewFC: I just use it to boost connection down to the kids bedrooms (old double-brick house) but sometimes some of their devices struggle (buffering!)

The 59U has an incomplete implementation of AIMesh.

It does not support binding, so you can't force specific devices to always connect to that or the master. It does not support being the master in an AIMesh system. There are a few other features missing but those are the ones I recall. Pay the extra for AX55 which does support those features.

For IoT devices I found they did a poor job of choosing the best device so binding was necessary for me. When you reboot the router, the master comes online first, and devices connect to that. Although the node may have much better signal when it comes online, many IoT devices would not swap.

      • the Mesh supposed to handle the AP automatically as long as the dBm is configured well.

      • Thats troubling. I am looking to pair it with my trusty AC88U

      • Thanks for that info. This will only ever be a mesh node but I never knew about the binding options. I'm currently running 2*RT-AC68U in a mesh and signal doesn't quite get to the back of the property.

  • Just received this. Unable to added it to my AC88U Mesh Router. tried both wireless and wired method. both failed at around 50%.
Have an existing Node AC3100 which works fine.

  • It costs $111 where is the $50 cost?
