Great deal, can't believe it hasn't had more comments or +'s.
Cheapest price elsewhere via staticice = $940.

    • I'm not a fan of the 1366x768 screen on a 15.6" laptop but if it suits your purposes then go for it.

Screen res aside, is there a better spec lappie out there for similar money? Don't mind res as Laptop will be plugged into external monitor at home and work. Just want beefy specs - anything missing here?

    • +2

I can see one way to improve the specs is putting an SSD into this laptop to increase the load up times and overall performance.

A 60gb SSD can't will barely change the overall performance, Just boot up times. You can put a SSD card into any crappy laptop and it will not change the performance when playing a game which is mostly dependable on processing power and the video card. + that is a cheap SSD card anyway. Not like you can fit all your data on a 60gb anyway just the boot files.

        • +2

Hmm, I would have thought that the key word 'selection' and a link to a range of SSD products might have strongly implied that you had more options than the 60GB drive in this deal alone??? :p

        • thanks for the tip, i will put the links i put on comment up on the post :)

        • Sure but my comment was directed at the "putting an SSD into a laptop to increase the load up times and overall performance" which is barely noticeable and not even necessary IMO.

        • Yes, an SSD will certainly (primarily) increase boot times, as well as load times for any apps on the SSD (including native OS apps/applets).

Now, combine that with faster access for those apps to any program library/data/driver files stored there. Remember, a lot of stuff is going on at kernel/shell level that you never see at the interface. It is very noticeable, due to the cumulative effect it is a significant real-world improvement in most systems pretty much across the board over and above mechanical drives…even at SATA2 speeds, let alone SATA3!

If we were talking about a 7200rpm drive over a 5400rpm I'd be agreeing with you, but SSD is vastly different. It took me a while to become a convert…but you should try one too, you'll never look back! ;)

        • From what you said sounds like boot time/load time to me, the performance is highly dependent on buffering time your cpu and graphic card are able to process for any visual proformance (fps and for photoshop will be almost the same.

From what I think, The only benefits of a SSD card is boot times/less energy consumption and reading and write times. I think getting an ssd to fit all your data is a waste 120gb+ as the cost doesn't outweigh the benefits.

To each their own I guess! If load time to open an app is that important and you have loads of money it's a definite go. I'm actually looking for a SSD card myself primarily for the quicker boot times.

When SSD drop to HDD prices I would consider getting an SSD card big enough to fill all my data for the minimal overall performance enhancement lol.

        • fps and for photoshop will be almost the same

Photoshop maybe to some extent, but don't forget your work still has to be loaded/cached/stored.

Now, as for FPS games…well, no improvement as far as pure in-game fps goes, but a single number doesn't determine overall performance in gameplay. Again, it depends on how important load times & latency for GPU data that isn't preloaded (like new maps, scene transitions, texture caching etc) is to you…comes down to personal preference, do you want a better gaming experience if you play FPS games??? Remember, idle HDDs still have to spin up!

Just google Intel's tests "SSD and impact on A-list games" for more in-depth info on SSDs & FPS game performance.

I think getting an ssd to fit all your data is a waste 120gb+ as the cost doesn't outweigh the benefits.

That's it in a nutshell, nobody's suggesting that you have to put everything on it; they're not a replacement for your primary storage…they're a system supplement. You spend what you can afford. FWIW, most people could easily make do with 60gb, but 120gb is the sweet spot IMHO unless you're a heavy gamer.

Anyway, if you haven't tried you can't know, and not knowing is your loss! You can afford Photoshop, new FPS games & presumably a halfway decent gaming CPU/system/GPU; but you're balking at under $1/gb…I'm sure you can understand how that seems somewhat illogical to me! ;)

        • +1

Hmm, but I think the money is better spent upgrading your gpu, I will let you know if i notice much difference when I get my intel ssd in. Great review though thanks.

        • How'd you go aerona, are you an SSD convert yet? :)

  • Great Specs

  • i dont get this, great package completely spoiled by screen res

why would you put this kind of internal on such derpy res

  • Rep, are there any deals on business laptops? I'm looking for 15 inch + USB 3.0 + processing speed + memory + SDD + screen res, but not so much graphics?

We do have a laptop sale this weekend on this page:
      http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/shop/hot-deals/clearance-l…

All laptops in this section have been discounted for the weekend, plus you will get a bonus lotto 6 game ticket for every laptop purchased - just for the fun. However, if you cannot find any particular model you are interested, i have already sent you a message requesting you to narrow down some details so we can get the right product you are looking for.

      • Some good prices there, I could buy a lot of laptops this weekend!

Love the "You may also like" suggestions for eg on http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/lenovo-l420-core-i5-14… which include:

Retractable Blue Ink Ballpoint Pen $1.95 (Useful to fill in the warranty form?)
Christmas Santa Claus Head Poster with X-Mas Text $2.95 (Maybe because that's all I'll be able to afford for the kids if I keep buying laptops?)

        ;-P

  • website says it has 6GB memory, whereas you mention 8BG above. which one is it?

    • sorry, was looking at wrong laptop. it is 8GB.

This deal reminds me of deal you had almost a year ago. Just that you've one up'd all the main specs.
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/55318

It was a great deal then and this is a great deal now.
Only request i would make is to do the deal where you can get the extended warrenty for a discounted price. You did it last year, so can you do it this year?

    • +1

Good OP on that deal, should give him a medal ;)

  • So Tempting!

but I have 2 Core2Duo laptops that I barely use as it is. Any idea's what a C2D with 4gb ram and ATi 4600 series graphics are worth? If I can get decent money for my two old ones I can jump on this one.

    • 100-250 each maybe, depends on the cpu model.

      • The one I'm on now is a 16" Samsung with a 2.53ghz P8700 C2D CPU.
The other one is a HP DV6, 15.6" and 2.6ghz cpu iirc.

I wonder how long this special will last for.

        • Yeah I have a samsung dual core 2.80 (the r522 model), same ram and graphics and it might fetch maybe 200-400(unlikely). I bought the laptop for about $1200 2 years ago. So the samsung you have will have a lower market value.

Just my 2cents, I7 cpu is a waste of money IMO. The 8 threads core is only for photoshop and high level editing. If you are just using it for normal or for games i'd save my money for an i5. Saw a HP pavillion for quite cheap sometimes listed on here.

        • What's the video card like on your average i5 cpu? I think $800 is a decent price for dedicated mid range graphics.
