A great deal on a quality 5m LED strip as it looks like Meross is having a sale. I use these as backlights for the TV and also for lighting various surfaces such as the Kitchen/Bedrooms around the home and they are absolutely fantastic with Homekit and Siri. Works great with Homekit and you can adjust the colour temperature depending on the time of day/use. Had issues with other cheap LED strips but these have lasted and reduce eye strain on my devices.

  • Not bad! You can do similar with ESPHome for about $10 for those DIY inclined, but this is of course neater.
I wonder if the Meross integration for Home Assistant will show the full controls

This could be good to get going with Hyperion (DIY Hue play)

    • ESPHome + LED Strip in $10? I'm seeing even no power strip (5m) for $30. Happy to go DIY Route but can you share how do you build those in 10?

      • I've also found DIY kits to be quite unreliable and often the connection with the strip will fail.

    • There doesn't appear to be a Meross integration in Home Assistant?

    • I've got 2 pairs of those setup in my home. The Integration to HomeKit limits the functionality to setting up the brightness and colours only however, there's not much more in the Meross app. You've got 3 modes - Static, Flash, Breath - so you're not missing much. The strips are pretty responsive - no lag or delay. I haven't had any connectivity issues so far so if you're not after anything super customisable and looking for something that you set up and forget these are pretty good. Just a note, the colours are also not great, I'd even say pretty limited but that might be just me being picky. I've never had anything like phillips hue so can't compare.

No way you can get a good LED strip 5m for $10 let alone the controller.

  • Meross have got great support too. I had one fail, they ran me through some various trouble-shooting, and then just replaced the controller module.

    • Yep had nothing but great experiences with them. They've been great when I've reached out for support.

      • +4

I can back this. Have their garage door opener. It stopped working out of no where 1.5 years after buying. They were happy to run me through the troubleshooting and replaced it for free.

  • For some reason the smart plugs are listed twice on Amazon at different prices - I think these are the same?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08DSV65NG?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_p…

I received the 4 pack yesterday, connected it to HA via HomeKit and have them running some downlights as sensor lights. They are chunky, but just fit through the 90mm hole for my downlights onto single plugs in the roofspace so no issues there.

    • +1

They have 2 Homekit models, one with energy monitoring and one without. The one in that link doesn't have the energy monitoring.

      • Ah shoot, I spent a while comparing the pages before I bought without picking up on that. Good call.

Thankfully downlight power monitoring isn't a deal breaker, although I would have got the others if I'd realised.

just interested why you don’t use a smart downlight instead ? you have more controls e.g dimming as well.

      • I've got them in an entryway, so I don't need more functions and this is a substantially more cost effective way of doing it.

I've been trying to find smart downlights that I want to use, but haven't find the right option yet. My boss said he's using regular downlights with dimmable smart wall switches which is another option.

        • -1

except it’s just a simple swap for changing the downlight as obviously you’ve got the socket already but changing the switch would require a sparky legally…..

          • @OzComment: Agree, but I figure with my luck random downlights will die, so much easier being able to just replace them with a standard one rather than needing to source another smart one

  • I am looking to install Smart LED Strip Light in our new construction where electrician will do it for us at no extra charge, so I am looking for about 50m Smart LED Strip.
Any other recommendation? My budget is about $600 for 50m. Thanks in advance.

I have had this one for a year and a half, although interestingly when I bought it, it was RGBWW which means it has seperate LEDS for cool and warm white, which is specifically why I bought it.
Its mounted in our kitchen and looks awesome.
The only catch is theres a bit of a wifi black spot where the controller is so sometimes it disconnects and requires power cycling to reconnnect.
    Otherwise, 0 complaints at all.

why is it so hard for device designers to make a smart plug that doesnt take block up the port next to it…like make it longer?

  • +1

    Serious question.
Why does anyone need to backlight a tv? What are you trying to "light"?

    • +10

It's called Bias Lighting. It reduces eye strain by putting more light into your peripheral vision without reflecting off the front of the screen. This in turn actually makes viewing less fatiguing and more enjoyable.

      https://www.howtogeek.com/213464/how-to-decrease-eye-fatigue…

That's why the 5m metre length on this kit is great, it can go around the border of a large TV easily.

    • +1

It also can make non-OLED TVs look better by reducing how much you can notice backlight bleed.

    • +8

Helps you find your 80" TV

    • +3

Other than the bias lighting thing the RGBW one I have also makes for a nice decorative lighting as it shines back onto a big white wall and is enough to light the whole room with a soft light

  • Does this also connect to google home?

    • Pretty much anything does.

  • +1

This might be a silly question but can this be cut and reconnected with LED Light Strip Connectors?

    Something like this:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Connectors-Unwired-Gapless-Multico…

    • +1

Yes they can be cut to size.

      • Do you know if these are 10mm width? Need to make sure I buy the correct connectors!

        • +2

I can't measure exactly at the moment but it was the same width as my other strips so I would say yes.

    • If you get the longer Meross option it comes with some connectors in the box.

    • This looks like a great way to go around 90 degree corners.

  • Correct me if I am wrong it has 300 led's in 5 meter, thats 60 per meter. Much neater profile lighting needs 240 per meter.

    • +2

It depends if it’s an integrated RBG LED or seperate colour diodes. These are integrated and therefore you can get smooth lighting at 60/m.

      • Yeah but that makes each diode 16 mm apart which is quite some gap. Plus I am not able to find longer LED channel system like Track and covering for smooth ambient lighting.

        • +1

Sure, each to your own. This is still standard spacing for most LED strips. Unless you have the wall <5cm away from the strips it won't be noticeable.

  • +2

This doesn’t seem like the model which also has warm and cool LEDs. Only thing I can find is from Amazon UK for $49.

  • I bought these for my kids ceiling, but because they're exposed it's a little dodgy… Anyone have any tips on where to get a low-profile channel to run them through so the light is diffused, and the elements aren't exposed?

  • +1

Looks like the non Apple version is a bit cheaper at $29.99 if you don't need fruit compatibility.

    • +2

Or, if you run Homebridge, the meross plugin works flawlessly.

    • Will that work with Google assistant

      • Yes. Says it in the listing.

  • +2

Looks like getting these working directly with home assistant/mqtt (not using meross app) is a bit of a process.

    https://github.com/krahabb/meross_lan/discussions/63

    • I have 50+ lights and various other smart home things in my house and use google home to control it all. I set up a home assistant server the other day to see how it went so I could have one less thing using google……….and literally nothing of mine is compatible with home assistant lol. Arlo? Nope. Meross? Nope. Grid connect? Nope. Mi Home? Nope. Laser? Nope. Literall nothing was supported lol. Very disappointing for how much I've seen some tech channels and sites rave about it.

      • +2

I've slowly added devices to home assistant over 6-7 years, so in my mind, it wasn't THAT much work, but if I was to sit down and have to do it all today, it would be a considerable effort. It's likely you could get many of your devices working, but it's not friendly. Often the included integrations are out of date, or no longer maintained and you need to find a custom component (I know that is the case for Arlo). I had to write my own integration for the heating/aircon system I had a long time ago. But home assistant can be extremely powerful. I used to have an automation that paused the tv, if it was playing and someone rang the doorbell. I don't know if you can do that with google home, you certainly couldn't 5 years ago. Right now I have some shitty wyze rtsp cameras that have to be rebooted when it's dark out and again when it's light out to flip the IR LED's on and off. I have that tied to sundown/sunup. Again not sure if google can do that. I don't need to sell you on it, but I feel like home assistant is more of a hobby in itself, than a plug and play solution.

      • +2

HA can definitely have a bit of a learning curve, but the meross and mi home stuff works fine for me. Would suspect the others may have integrations in the HACS store as well if they are popular hardware. I personally think HA is worth the effort to get into. Use it for everything now and rarely touch anything in HomeKit.

      • +2

I have Meross and Tuya (grid connect) connected to my HA.

I'm using a Kogan Bluetooth PIR to trigger Meross smart switches, which can't be done natively in their own apps. You should be able to connect your devices to it

    • Home assistant is not a hobby; it's a lifestyle.

  • So is 150 lights across 5 metres enough for smooth lighting gradients?

    • +1

It’s not too bad, it’s not super smooth but for the price and HomeKit integration I think it’s alright. See the image for reference:

      • what is the brand/model of those back-lit switches on the wall? Looks good.

        • +1

Those are the Clipsal Iconic switches with LED lights behind them. They look pretty nice. Although I should have thought about getting the smart switches instead of these. Maybe wouldn't look as good but would allow better home automation.

          • @piotrekov: The elecetricion also replaced all old switches with some Clipsal ones when I had the house renovated recently. The switches installed look very similar to yours but they donot light up. I will try to find out they he used exactly.

            • @aec: It's an addition that you have to ask for as not every sparky is aware of these. Look up Clipsal Iconic 40MLEDW or Clipsal Iconic - Switch mechanism, LED module, 250V it's probably gonna cost you around 2$ per LED,

          • @piotrekov: Sounds like you will need a neutral wire at every switch for the LED to be on all the time.

            • @Naigrabzo: Can't say as it's not really my area of expertise, but if that's true - glad to hear that as I think the smart switches need that too :D

  • Thoughts on this to get a dark spot in a corner lit or would a stand RGB light be a better solution?

    Any suggestions?

  • +2

If only it was the RGBWW version.. I made the mistake of purchasing the RGB version prime day thinking it was the same one I had purchased the year prior, not noticing that small detail.

    • +4

Didnt realise they did a RGBWW version. Thanks, will definitely hold out for that one - majority of the time I want a warm white light. https://shop.meross.com/products/smart-led-strip-lights-16-4…

      • You can buy the RGBWW version @ Amazon AU @ 10% off if you buy two.

    • Agree. After a bit of research, I'm more after a range of white (warm - cool) instead of RGB colors, for use in the TV room.

  • Great deal cheers

  • +1

OP, any video of your TV backlight setup with lights in action? Would love to see it :)

  • Could someone explain to me how the colour changing works? Do you have to manually change it or can it pick up the colours of the TV with some sort of software? I clearly don't understand this much.

    • +1

You have to change it. There are ones that change with the tv but they literally require a camera set up that watches the tv and copies the colours, but this isn’t that.

      • Right that makes sense, cheers

    • +1

Colour changing with the TV is largely a gimmick, although some people like it.

Bias lighting behind your TV on the other hand can improve your viewing experience.

      • So bias lighting can be used with any TV then? And its just a light strip behind the TV, nothing fancy? I'll read up on it thanks

        • Yes that’s correct, it’s a faint glow behind your TV.

  • AVOID ANY LED strip without a dedicated WHITE led. that dedicated LED should be warm white and ensure it is not Cool white unless you want to work at 7 /11 style lighting.

RGB is atrocious at producing white. AVOID!! i have thrown away strips that are RGB only, they are garbage . (red green, blue)

for reference ., I 'm a lighting and design professional.

    • Which LED Strips do you recommend?

  • +1

Do you guys use aluminum channel for this LED strip? What do you recommend?

    • They come with a 3M glue strip on the back so you should be able to afix them to anything straight away. Otherwise if I need to peel them off again I just use double-sided tape.
