  • how is this compare with the TPlink AX1500?

Might be better to get Asus AX1800 for $99 shipped. (Card fees are extra)

    • That one looks better, as it has "574 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band". So faster for devices that don't do 5GHz.

Can anyone tell me, as you approach the edges of a router's range, is the 5GHz still usable? Or will using the 2.4GHz band result in faster speed?

Ideally you want to use 2.4 band for items placed in the further distances or roaming. 5ghz band for closer proximity to the router or access points. So to answer your question, 2.4ghz will always result in faster speeds dependant on distance.
Another random fact to note is Asus has mesh AI feature, some models of routers have this feature and have dual/tri/quad bands which are used in uniformity allowing you endless connectivity without dropouts in your place of residence.
