I always wonder about the use case for these expensive chromebooks when you can get a core i5 windows laptop for the same price

I bought a Duet for my elderly mother after she's had Windows for years. She would accasionally have issues with Windows, but easy enough to solve. Figured a Chrome book would be better since she just does the usual browsing, emails, a word doc here and there.

The Duet has been painful. So many play store apps don't work, the simplest things need Googling and she has constant issues and I hate fixing the thing. But she has no issues with her Galaxy tab so go figure. Had high hopes for the Chrome book, but i don't see the appeal either. Have one for sale.

ChromeOS is not the same as Android, hence a lot of apps don't work on chromeOS, that was one of the deal breakers for me. Another was the poor quality speakers on every Chromebook under $500 I could find.

It was a deal at $497 a few months back. At this price I don't think it's worth it

I didn't need a chromebook and had no expectations. This what I like about this duet 5
+ Great screen, 13.3 inch oled screen, great for media consumption, nothing really comparable for the $497 price I paid at the time
+ incredible battery life, the thing pretty much lasts 15 hours of screen time
+ versatility you can use it as a tablet as well, but chrome os isn't as good for tablet use and 13.3 inches is too big imo (no idea how people use the ultra tablet)
+ Chrome proper desktop browser with extension support, android apps, and linux also available
+ Regular updates with new features. Do love the new mutitasking features added. Samsung should steal some of this stuff for DeX

      The negatives imo

      • I would have figured there could have used faster SoC and storage, but I guess this was an intentional tradeoff to have massive battery life. It can still play some mobile games, it great for emulating games, can even emulate gamecube and ps 2 ones.
      • speakers are poor for a quad speaker tablet set up, even a midrange phone offers better audio output
      • Android app support comes with the negatives of poorer performance, more likely to encounter bugs, on an older Android version 11 and sideloading APKs requires more effort than it does with just an Android device.

I like the device and have been very happy with my purchase. I mostly use Chrome instead of apps so perhaps that why it works better for me. I don't see any point in installing Android apps when the browser can accomplish the job. It also gets around the situation of poor blown up mobile apps on Android.

      • Absolute bargain at $497 if same specs!

      • Thank you for your details. Appreciated.

Chromebooks can be very good machines for the right job. I think you’d find this 700 dollar Chromebook is better to use than most 700 dollar laptops.

The screen on this would blow away most 700 dollar windows machines. Just by being OLED and have 100% DCI P3 coverage. So it’s a good machine.

And pc mag measured the battery life at over 21 hours…

    • Yes, I have duet5, screen is very nice. The only windows machine I think is closed to it is: Asus Slate 13 OLED, but some how they never available in Australia:

I was going to buy this, but tired of waiting it come out in here, then buy the duet5

Love my duet 5. Does everything I need. The battery lasts forever and the display is unbelievable.

  • i have the 11" version (2k screen, no LED but same hardware specs)
Fair bit cheaper than this, but its a smaller device and screen isnt oled.

Use mine as a media consumption device instead of an Ipad and love it, great battery life.

As far as why this vs a laptop - depends what you're using it for.
Great battery life, lightweight, no heat, chromeOS gets updates for a long time (unlikely most android tablet devices)

    • Do you watch shows on it? I found that after updates 2 months ish ago that my display times out whilr my shows are on and I have to intermittently swipe or press something. Didn't use to do it before

      • nope, but generally pausing etc every half hour or so

        • as a Chrome OS device you can use android apps, do you use streaming etc via chrome or via android app?

          • +1

@Gdsamp: i use a combination of both depending on the app

          • @Gdsamp: The only app I use for media consumption is kodi. Outside of that I use chrome. Which is only youtube and Kayo. The aspect ratio makes this thing great for media consumption. And for the display turning off, I found if you go to battery setting there's a setting to keep display on. I only found it turns screen off in Android apps.

        • Yeah mine times out after 5 minutes or so, annoying because I'm eating and have to remember to swipe

    FYI…
The JB Hifi one with the same specs is a different model number which includes a stylus - Officeworks 82qs001bau vs JB HIFI 82qs000aau.

JB are selling the matching model number with lower specs - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lenovo-duet-5-13-3-full-h…

  • I don't know if you've heard the issue with old, unsupported chrome books still being sold at Amazon, brand new. Even with 8 year support, Chrome books are locked down as far as I know. I've got laptops older than 8 years old and can run Windows or Linux with no issue. Would this have the same ease of reuse or would they be essentially bricked?

Edit: "with no issue" aside from being slow/unsupported

    • i'ven't heard about that.
According to this BestBuy link can confirm the 8 year support window for the Duet 5 13 (End 2029)

This device will get automatic software and security updates until June 2030

    • I'm running linux on mine. It's even less supported than x86 so takes some work. I'm using cadmium but the project is dead and needs a bit of fixing to get it to boot.

A bit much considering the age, it was released 2 years ago. I wonder when the next version is coming, the Duet got upgraded to the Duet 3.

    • Yea, kicking myself for not getting it at $497 with those deals in late June.
The Duet 5 was released early-Sept 2021 and available in Oct. Kind of want one now to get the TRS as I am going overseas soon

  • Any chance of Open Firmware overwriting the original OS to keep it going?
