SD1970 always have me rueing my skinny wrists.

    • +1

How skinny though? This has short lugs so you might be ok.

      • Would the SD1953 be better for skinny wrists?

        • No just looks less bulky and is the submarina rip off. Very popular style, have a number of Pagani with that 40mm case, fine on 6.5" wrist.

You could also look at the explorer style, 36mm sits very nice on smaller wrists too.

    • +4

Mate I think it would still look good on you

    • I have small hands and wrists(I believe), this watch looks fine IMHO…

  • +1

Is Aliexpress reliable? I've always been to leery to order from them for some reason.

    • +5

Depends what store you buy from.

    • +1

It's a marketplace. Same rules apply - check seller feedback, how long they've been around, etc.

    • +4

Largely imo no but stick to good reputation sellers and you should be fine

    • +2

I have never had a problem getting a refund for lost parcels with Aliexpress. Their protection policy is as good as PayPal

    • +2

Yes, for the most part. Not really anymore dangerous than any other marketplaces like Amazon/eBay imo

Stick with the items that have 1000s sold and sellers with 1000s of positive feedback and you'll be fine. The few times that I've had items not arrive the refund process isn't too much of a pain. Use common sense though and be wary of the estimated delivery dates (wildly innacurate half of the time)

    • +1

Always been reliable for me. Seller response has quick, always able to cancel or refund.
Most recent purchase I accidentally made before checking the expected delivery date.
The ad said more than 2 months delivery but the seller assured me that it would be sooner, it would be shipped within 6 hours and gave me the option to cancel. Gave it a shot and the item arrived in 13 days.

I've ordered tons of stuff from AliExpress, (RC hobby parts, cheap tools, electronics) just know what you are buying and read the reviews. Some of the items packaging can be badly damage, some are fine but never had to return an item or wait more than a month

      • +1

        Thanks everyone for valuable feedback.

  • Aurgh do I want a black one…

    • +2

      Green brah

      • +3

        Shiiiiet you're right.
I should sell my SRPD63K because honestly it feels cheap compared to my SD1970

        • You being serious though dude?

          • +2

@Zitane: He's correct - the bracelets and clasps are cheap and rattly on most seikos, and they don't have sapphire crystal until you spend about $1000 RRP.

ps. Not a fan of Seiko 5's either.

            • +1

              @G-rig: Yeah. Exactly.
I like the look of the face but the bracelet is so light and cheap it's wild.

              • @theguyrules: Replaced mine with a different strap. Can't stand their metal bracelets.

                • @Munki: What strap did you use?

                  • @theguyrules: Just a cheapie nato strap from Aliexpress.

                    • @Munki: Awesome cheers

                      • +1

@theguyrules: No problems, The good thing about the Seiko 5 series is they look good with straps too, so you can wear them differently.

                        • @Munki: Yeah good getting 20mm lug width watches and can swap around your straps.
Im fairly partial to NATOs and those Barton elite silicone Quick release.

                          • @G-rig: Yeah the silicone ones are great for a much more casual/sporty look. Good call.

                            • @Munki: You can get them on Amazon, $35.
Just easier and quicker than from the states.

    • I've got the black one. Absolutely gorgeous, just doesn't get enough time on wrist.

  • +3

Picked one up in a previous deal - green, no logo, on bracelet.

Impressed with build quality, lume. Not the best bracelet but a decent fit for me. May swap it to a rubber waffle strap. It's quite a heavy watch.

Great for the price, IMO, if you don't mind a homage. I wouldn't say life changing but I also wouldn't be seeking revenge if someone had said it was life changing.

  • Black or green?

    • +1

      Black.

Get the stainless bracelet, those waffle straps are pretty cheap quality.

@MaxStinge this watch is fine on smaller wrists due to the short lug-lug.

  • Bummer. I ordered one of these last week… could have saved a few bucks. Any strap recommendations? I've been eyeing off the waffle black.

  • +2

bought the green one few weeks ago, had the waffle strap - the strap loop broke within a few days, it was not easy sliding it off after putting in on your wrist.
this is my cheapest watch by far but i gotta say, its my 2nd most favourite watch (after my most expensive one that the wife gave me).
I'm scared of modding just because i might open a gate to a very expensive hobby.
    Thank you @WatchNerd

    • +1

Contact seller may get a partial credit like @Muzeeb got

    • +1

Put in a claim through AliExpress. I had a refund a few days later (around 80% if memory serves me correctly.) I purchased another Steeldive with the refund.

Edit: just checked account it was 75%

  • I love this watch but I wish it had a bit more power reserve than 12 hrs..

    • Should have 41 hours, IIRC.

      • i wonder if its worth getting a winder, but its pretty funny how a decent looking winder would cost more than the watch itself

        • +2

I wouldn't bother personally - You can hand wind it if you're not wearing it for a day or two. Setting it gives you a chance to interact with the watch.

          • @ihfree: +1 no point and just wears out the movement. Would cost more than the watch.. only take less than 30sec to set (or just wind it a bit).

      • I take it off late at night and wake up and it's run out.. Nowhere near 41 hours..

        • Yeah but how do you know it was fully wound when you took it off?

        • Give it a good wind when you are setting it, not just 5 revolutions or something.

        • Try the other advise - such as hand winding. This will help determine if you have a faulty movement.

A days wear had never failed to get me through to the next morning. I'm reasonably certain that most of my watches will make it through to the following day.

This will obviously vary based on how much you wear the watch and your level of movement.

    • Wait, you have to wind this thing every 12 hours??

      • No, It's an automatic watch with the added benefit of handwinding.

Just got a black one with SS bracelet and it came to $85 with BTS5, try following the Steeldive store and collecting all the available coupons to get a few more dollars off.

I almost went for a black SD1953 at the same price but the overwhelming love for the SD1970 convinced me to give it a try. The SD1953 might be next though.

    • +1

1953 is awesome. I did the cyclops delete and put a NATO strap on. It would look good on you.

      • Did you do a special request for the cyclops or you did it yourself?

        • +1

DIY. Held a soldering iron point on it for about 30 seconds and it fell right off. Removed excess glue with alcohol. There's a few YouTube videos on the process.

          • +1

            @Muzeeb: That's a waste of alcohol though.

            • +2

@WatchNerd: To clarify - I was drinking alcohol and rubbing the excess glue off with thumb friction.

    • Finally caved in for the same $85 price. Hard to argue against it for that price!

  • Do you have deals for any swiss watches?

  • thankfully the sterile addiesdive pilot isn't on sale, I don't need to spend more money this week

  • What do we look for good movement ard this price? Just nh35? Nh35a?

  • +4

Just bought another watch that I probably shouldn't have :-) I think I need to setup a rule to hide all WatchNerd posts.

FFS ozbargain. I spend a few minutes creating a post with various links in an attempt to help the community. I hit [Post Comment] and bam - unpublished due affiliate, spam shite. At least give me a few minutes to re-edit before allowing a second attempt to post or highlight the issue in the preview function. FFS.

Bloody annoying, need to delete everything after the . html for AliExpress links.

      @airtime everyone should have a SD1970.

    • +2

Bummer, next time click on save draft before posting.

      • Does the draft not disappear immediately on posting?

        • I can't remember but it wouldn't matter if it does anyway. The point was to avoid losing all your work.

  • The sliding AUD really stings. Good to have some coupon codes to ease the importer's pain

  • Any of you nerds know a good version of the Sea-Gull 1963? I posted a link that got deleted

  • +1

    This one: https://m.aliexpress.com/item/4000903465780.html

I think the no lume, 38mm gooseneck domed acrylic one is the best rep but I'm not an expert

    • Damn you :-) :-) Another watch I am now longing for.

I don't own a mechanical chronograph at the moment due to their cost. I'm also not normally a fan of a busy dial, or a dial with many sub-dials. But this watch answers both. Low cost, attractive and clear dial. Plus, always wanted a Seagull movement. Hmm.

  • Considering going the green. Any recommendations for a waffle strap?

  • It’s morphin’ time.

  • +1

This seems like a good deal - Addiesdive Rubber Watch Band for Diver Watch20mm is $9.79.
Comes with 2 spring bars and 1 spring bar remover tool.

    • This doesn't seem too bad either - San Martin bronze pilot. $165 less whatever coupons you can stack.

      https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005004510760306.html

37mm so on the small side, quartz not mechanical (big whoop imo), pity the no-logo version is OOS, but otherwise not a bad looking number.

    • Looks like those hard citizen ones I take straight off.

      • I like my hard Citizen dive watch strap.

        • That's lucky.
Maybe it softens up over time.
Guess as long as if fits and you like the dive limit markings (at least my limited edition version is plain black).

  • Hi @stuffandthat, why not get this Steeldive in blue for your Dad?

    • +1

It's not bad, but I think an eco-drive or similar would suit him better. I'm already going to struggle explaining how to change the date!

  • Decent deal but what is the retailer thinking claiming the normal price is $USD398???? Why stop there….claim $1m or more. They don't need to fudge the price to make it a solid deal on a good watch.

    • They all do that, even (especially) Seiko haha - the real price is about half of RRP.

  • Received watch today. Very impressed with the speed of shipping and packing. Watch itself is really nice, better than I was expecting. Very happy.

    • Mine arrived today too, that’s my fastest ever AliExpress delivery. The watch feels better than I expected, and I appreciated that it came with a little tool to adjust the bracelet, but I’m not sure yet how much wrist time it’s gonna get.
