    Maybe for 300…

    • Would be nice! I'd snap at it too for that price. Atm though, fresh outta $$ so i'll keep waiting lol

  • Aftermarket heatsink required?

    • +1

For sustained heavy loads, I believe so.

i have the 2tb version of this and use it in an itx case. bought a cooler off aliexpress, JEYI Finscold IceGlacier about $15, drive doesn't go over 45°. its a bit big, but it has good performance. The smaller icold-007 is also probably totally sufficient though (haven't tried it myself)

vs Lexar 4Tb at approx $230?

    • Si link

      • +1

        Oops $255 - got me.
Was less during the ebay cashback.

        https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/lnm790x004t-rnnng-lexar-n…

        • +1

That has no onboard DRAM, uses HMB. Different level of performance for those who need it. For normal users, both are similar. Reliability-wise, Lexar does not inspire confidence with the components being used. Also be aware that the Lexar of today is not the same company as the Lexar that made flash storage products. The company is gone, with its brand name sold to a company in China to use. None of the products or technology or reputation come from the original Lexar company that we know and love.

          • @Sleepycat3: Yep - correct to all.

          • +1

@Sleepycat3: Agreed. I will only use the Lexar as a game or scratch drive, nothing more. I wouldn’t use it for an OS drive or secondary storage even I have backups just to save myself from the headaches if the drive fails. All brands’ drives could fail prematurely (looking at you Samsung!) but I will not cheap out on SSDs.

    • +1

this is a far more superior drive. I wont trust the lexar as an OS drive. Storage, game drive, maybe.
The SN850x is one of the best drives out there.

      • Why not as an os drive? I'm thinking about upgrading my wd black sn770 1tb, but using it as my main ssd on my lenovo yoga c940

        • the Maxio controller and YMTC combo does have quite a few reports of drive disappearing randomly.

          • @pkjames: Very concerning indeed. Maybe I'll need to do more research on this, was hoping to buy it now. Thanks for the heads up

            • @Boxcuttahz: I asked pkjames for more info and he pointed out some links. From a quick look (using Google Translate), they are related to Fanxiang SSDs (one of them is related to an older model). However, I have read reports that some other SSD makers messed up the firmware and re-cycled / re-used serial numbers and when they sent you 2 SSDs with the same model and same serial number, one of them won't run properly in a PC (if you put both of them in the same PC).

Technically, if you really want to get an SSD that is more consistent, especially for heavy multi-tasking, then WD SN850X is clearly better. However, price wise, Lexar NM790 is quite attractive.

I would avoid Fanxiang SSDs (especially for large size SSDs). Lexar was sold to a Chinese company, probably be a reasonably big company in China (sorry, I don't know much about Chinese companies, which ones are big and which ones are not) so it doesn't make sense for them to buy Lexar and stuff it up.

If you want a quality SSD which is more consistent in performance, especially at high workload, then SN850X. However, if you are not doing heavy project work or coding. then NM790 is likely good enough.

              • @netsurfer: Oh man thank you for this great insight netsurfer. Really appreciate you sharing this information

              • @netsurfer: Do you use SSD specs instead of pornhub?

              • +1

@netsurfer: on the Lexar side, I won't rate them better than fanxiang et al. I personally had one of those expensive V90 SD card died within a month or two, under limited still photo shoots (purchased from B&H, US). I bought it specifcally for my Sony A7S3 for critical work, but had to basically throw it away. I was later told by the photography community to avoid Lexar at all costs.
So to me, Lexar and Fanxiang are the same.

Gigabyte aorus nvme isn't a bad choice for OS drives, if they were a decent price when I built my PC I would have bought one but I settled on Samsung 970 Evo does me fine for OS, using a tforce team cardea 2tb drive for games and that's solid also. Even with gen3 vs gen 5 in reality you don't notice a difference since they're both so fast for daily use.

          • @Willy Beamish: I want a Samsung evo as well but can't find a good price for a 2tb like this lexar hence why I nearly pulled the trigger. Guess I'm gonna need to keep waiting, thank you for the advice

            • @Boxcuttahz: What's your budget and your expansion capabilities?

              • @Willy Beamish: I was hoping to get 1 under 150 shipped. Preferably 2tb at minimum. Unfortunately my lenovo only has space for 1 ssd slot so pretty limited hence why I'm trying to find the best budget main os ssd

                • @Boxcuttahz: 2tb gigabyte aorus is 154 on Amazon but it's shipped from Amazon US, might be worth checking some reviews see if that suits your needs. Main things would be to consider slightly lower gen if it's going in a laptop as I doubt a heatsink would fit and you don't want it running too hot

I suggest also using https://staticice.com.au/ to check prices of local stores as well if you wanna make sure you're getting a good price

      • +1

Agreed, I have both the SN850X (boot/games) and the Lexar (secondary storage). Benchmarks are similar but the SN850X is more consistent, has lower latency and runs a bit cooler. With the WD you are paying for the DRAM and the brand (and presumably the quality), IMO it's worth $150 more than the Lexar.

  • +1

After all the anti-consumer crap that WD has pulled in recent years, I have stopped buying any of their drives (and SanDisk). Screw 'em.

    • WD Elements 12TB and up are great

  • +1

    67% $418.28
    RRP: $1,299.00

    cant believe 1299 RRP

    • That RRP was relevant when it first came out years ago lol

  • +1

I think if I was paying that price I would like to be guaranteed my warranty claim would go through in case of failure.

Reckon they would honour or just fob us off?

  • I think this drive is double sided, so no good for most laptops?

  • This was $409 two weeks ago but I didn’t cop because I’m waiting for it to go lower.

  • +1

Safe enough to buy from Amazon Germany? Have seen conflicting comments on here lately regarding buying ssd's from Amazon(outside of Australia).

    • I've had success with amazon germany and amazon uk drive listings in the past, main concern is that when price is too good to be true it often turns out to be an incorrectly labeled listing for a lower capacity drive, but support is willing to help when product does not match listing. The price is reasonable on this listing so it is probably the correct drive.

      • Thanks, but going by the other person who ordered this and got the wrong item I may pass

  • +2

Ordered this at $415 some time June, also from Amazon DE. A weird box of camera film arrived at my house instead of this SSD. Retuned it. Now i'm still waiting for refund.

    • Crikey, think I'll pass. Thanks

      • Always buy direct from Amazon and like eBay if you need to check 3rd party sellers feedback before buying. Amazon shipped direct is problem free usaly from my experience but scammer 3rd party is rife as the old saying, If it’s too good to be true; Rule!

China this year has surprised markets with cheap memory in bulk. This has led to a single stick of 32gb DDR4/5 now being AU$100 and SSD/NVME of AU$50 per 1tb. Now your all correct, for twice as much you get at least told your getting a more premium product (Korean/Twain) but be honest, you have no idea what’s your getting as ‘runs’ change with very little notice aside from a .002 dot /firmware code change but chips, functions are completely different. China wins, the nearest to $200 4tb gets my $. By the time it matters I’ll be getting a 8/16/32 tb SSD!!!

Oh never trust BRaNDS as they too change hands, make decisions to maximise profits over consumers; so you should make decisions to save money and get better deals too! Loyalty for shmucks

  • Deal back on, price drop to $413.52

  • Ok just received my WD 4tb order from amazon.de, empty box no drive just the retail box wtf.

    • This blows. Think I will get mine from Amazon US instead when I buy mine even if it is more expensive.
      Was the retail box sealed?

      • it did appeared to be sealed, but the seal was tampered with on the top location on the retail box. amazon did initiate a refund, well see if I get it. first and last time ordering from amazon.de
