10% off TCN HIM and The Cinema Gift Cards @ Target

Got this in an email yesterday and unsure if it's been posted yet. Might be better than current WW deal as it's a straight discount for those not signed up to EDR

Now that is the gift cards that dad deserves.

  • Any ways to take a further discount off this? I'm taking it this is an in-store purchase? I recall a target sign up deal of $10 off when spending $50?

  • Good find. Looks like only $50 denomination though!

    • Should be on all denominations, I just went in-store and got 10% off the $100 gift card.

  • Does anyone know shoopback supermarket gift card accepted at target,???
Here is the list for mcc:
This card is restricted and can only be used at the following merchant category locations:
    Grocery Stores & Supermarkets (5411),
    Frozen Meats, Seafood (5422),
    Candy, Nut, Confectionery Stores (5441),
    Cheese Shops (5451),
    Pastry Shops (5462),
    Miscellaneous Food Stores (5499).

    • Is the shopback supermarket accepted at Coles or woolworths?

    • +2

When I purchased a gift card instore at Target a couple of months ago, the MCC was 5310 - Discount Stores.

I would be quite surprised if the ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card worked at Target, but there is always no harm in trying. For example, when the Activ Visa Pets & Vets gift card listed MCC 5411 as a permitted MCC late last year, it also worked at BIG W, even though BIG W used MCC 5331 - Variety Stores (an MCC not listed as a permitted MCC on that gift card at the time).

      • Hi WookieMonster, I always wondered how I cound figure out the MCC for my purchases.
Are you using a particular bank's product that provides this level of information?

        • +2

Digital TCN gift cards will tell you the MCC for a transaction if you view the transactions from the TCN app on Android. (The TCN app on iOS only says PLACEHOLDER for the MCC.)

Hiver should also tell you the MCC for any transactions through their online banking, although I do not hold any products with them.

Otherwise, you would need to contact your bank and ask them to provide the MCC for the transaction. It is something they can see, but usually do not actually pass onto you through internet banking or a banking app.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Recovered my Hiver password, and I can see the MCC now.
            Thanks for that hot tip!

    • Most likely not but you can just take the long way around it.

    • Sorry noob here, what is mcc?which card are you talking about being restricted?

      • +3

MCC is an abbreviation for Merchant Category Code.

Each merchant is assigned an MCC, which is a four-digit number that generally describes the goods and/or services provided by that merchant.

The MCC is assigned by the merchant’s financial institution (the one that provides and operates the EFTPOS machines or processes online payments), and is part of the information the merchant’s financial institution transmits to the purchaser’s financial institution when the purchaser attempts to make a payment using a card from that financial institution.

When you attempt a payment on a TCN Cinema Card, the merchant’s payment systems contacts TCN and essentially asks TCN whether the transaction is approved or declined. TCN checks the MCC reported by the merchant’s payment systems to see whether it uses an MCC permitted for that gift card. TCN should approve the transaction if the reported MCC is permitted (and the gift card has sufficient available balance and is not expired/cancelled, etc). If the reported MCC is not a permitted MCC, TCN should decline the transaction.

The issue is that you will not know what the MCC is assigned to an EFTPOS terminal or an online payment gateway until you attempt a transaction. You could ask a staff member at the merchant to see whether they know what the MCC is for their systems, but considering this is something assigned by the merchant’s financial institution (and you do not need to know the MCC to use an EFTPOS terminal, plus the assigned MCC can change at any time), there is an extremely high chance the staff member will not know what you are talking about.

  • Is there a limit on how many cars you can buy? Was hoping to buy iPhone worth of cards

    • Nothing prevent you to go back in the store. Try it again after a couple of hours

    • +1

You should be able to purchase up to ten gift cards in one transaction, although you may have a staff member randomly enforcing a lower purchase limit.

You could visit the same store again later the same day or another day, but again, you may have a staff member who recognises you from an earlier purchase randomly stop you from doing this.

  • I had no issues just bought 20x Him cards I said it was Christmas presents!

Customer service representative didn’t ask any questions but you can only do a max of 10x gift cards per transaction

  • How can this card be used for Uber or Uber Eats transactions since this is an EFTPOS card?

Edit: answering my own question, I think you probably need to swap for the gift card?

  • Can you price match and jb hifi and then pay for it all in gift cards - I know you probably can pay with gift cards after price match but wondering if they have problem with such a large amount

    • +1

No issues as long as you convert it to JB-Hifi gift cards to buy after the price match.

I recently price-matched the ongoing iPad 9th-gen sale from Officeworks and used these cards to pay for it. Saved me an extra $40

      • Ah ok great. So just buy gift cards with gift cards?

        • +3

If you are purchasing the item(s) online at JB Hi-Fi, you will need to convert your physical TCN HIM gift cards into JB Hi-Fi gift cards first, as the JB Hi-Fi website is not able to accept eftpos cards. You can convert by either going to a JB Hi-Fi store and purchasing a JB Hi-Fi gift card using the TCN HIM gift card (which is not officially allowed), or going to the TCN website and doing an exchange there. If you do not know how to do an exchange, have a look at these instructions.

If you are purchasing the item(s) instore at JB Hi-Fi, you can do one of two things:

          1. Directly pay for the item(s) with the physical TCN HIM gift cards, which would mean that you would need to remove the packaging from each gift card, scratch to reveal the PIN and then swipe each gift card on the EFTPOS terminal. JB Hi-Fi handles the redemption of TCN HIM gift cards in the same way as other eftpos/Visa/Mastercard/AMEX cards, which means to redeem each TCN HIM gift card, you need to tell the staff member you want to use an eftpos card and the amount you want to redeem from the gift card, then swipe the gift card on the EFTPOS terminal, select Savings and then enter the PIN.

          2. Convert the physical TCN HIM gift card into a digital JB Hi-Fi gift card. I personally think this complicates things, because you will need to spend time converting gift cards, plus you would need a way to keep a track of the digital JB Hi-Fi gift card, plus you would still need to tell the staff member the exact amount you want to redeem from each gift card.

@WookieMonster: Thank you, I was CTRL+F "online", for these exact instructions

            you da man monster

@WookieMonster: I did option 1 today in store. Used 31 TCN Him gift cards, felt bad for taking up the cashier's time but they were a good sport about it.

A heads up to anyone else who goes instore to remove any of that glue residue from the magnetic strip. I had a couple fail to scan because the stuff got stuck in the machine when I swiped it. Eventually cleared it up.

@WookieMonster: Can I use TCN Him digital gift card to purchase Apple Gift Card from JB Hi-Fi?

            • +1

@ustrail: can confirm you can buy Apple Gift cards from JB and pay via the TCN card. ( Swipe TCN card -> click "Savings/SAV" -> enter Pin )

  • Cinema card is an EFTPOS card only for use instore at any cinema. So wont stack with foxtel hoyts or toyota movies

    • You can exchange a physical Cinema gift card for a digital Cinema gift card that operates on the Mastercard network. You can store the digital version on supported mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet), plus you can use it online at merchants using the correct MCCs (as long as the merchant chooses to accept prepaid Mastercard gift cards).

If you want to do an exchange:

      • Go to this webpage.
      • Scroll down to Pay safer and faster using your mobile wallet.
      • Click/tap on Go Digital and fill out the form.
  • Does anyone know whether I can use target gift cards to pay for TEN Him cards at target?

  • When do this deal end?

    Sorry it’s in the picture

  • Target limit is 10 gift cards and they will require someone to authorise them.

  • I should be fine to use 12-14 x $100 cards online in a single order for BCF? Can anyone confirm?
