“Every one of these cartoons is just something that drifted into my head when I was alone with my thoughts. And, for better or worse, I ‘jotted’ them down. It was only later, when perhaps I received an angry letter from someone, that it struck me: Hey! Someone’s been reading my diary!” —Gary Larson, from the preface to The Complete Far Side

Why does this review of these books sound like its from one of our regular forum posters.

"very pity when I have to return these books just because they are SUPER HEAVY (~5.5 kg) and take up a lot of space. I cannot put them in the shelf because I am afraid it would fall down. My finger nail get hurt when I accidentally let it fall in the bed :((( Besides, the quality of books is good; they all have color-pages, and again, heavy materials!"

    • Yeah, that looks like it was 2 years ago. This is still a good deal… got it for Dad for Fathers day… hopefully it arrives in time!

  • Are they still funny? Lots of humor doesn't age well. But given the whimsy of Far Side, maybe it works?

    • I don't recall any references to politics, sexuality or the like in his comics so it's likey aged well. Gary portrays animals as the more superior species so surely in 2023 the woke folk would also still find it funny.

      • I bought these about 6 months ago. I did note some jokes maybe not relating directly to sexuality, but certainly to traditional gender roles and gender in general, also jokes about people with disability. It was a different time, I'd go as far as saying these comics were woke for the 80s.

What a sad although insightful comment this was.

          Even funnier in 2023

    • It works because animals & stupid people have always been funny

He does target Neanderthals, none of that minority have complained yet though.

    • The controversial one was about the chimp wife jealous of Jane Goodall

    • Some are classics. The deer with a target shaped birthmark, and his friend saying "Bummer of a birthmark Hal". The pilot saying "Say, what's that mountain goat doing way up here in a cloud bank?". His "Trouble Brewing" series showing for example the tea cup poodle fanciers having a picnic next to the falconers club, the skydiving school next to the crocodile farm, and his oddly specific phobia series with luposlipahobia (the fear of being pursued by timber wolves around a kitchen table while wearing socks on a newly waxed floor) and anatidaephobia (the fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you). Larson fans will almost certainly immediately recognise sentences such as "Midvale school for the gifted" and "Hey Bob, think there are any bears in this old cave?" or "The Thagomizer". So yes, still funny to a lot of people although as with all humour it didn't appeal to everyone either then or now.

  • I bought the original hardcover version of this. And have alway wished I spent the money on the individual soft cover to complete the series as these hard covers are harder to just browse. Looks good on the shelf, though.

I found my old copy of "There's a hair in my dirt" (https://www.amazon.com/Theres-Turtleback-School-Library-Bind…) the other day. My kids - now all late teenagers - used to love it.

  • Price reduced to $100

    • Yes, went to have a look and the price was $100. Bought it at that price.
