Decent price on the Tecsun PL-380 at $45.73 (apply the coupon) its an older radio but it still has all the Tecsun features like easy tune mode and auto tune storage. The PL-380 has no external antenna port when compared with the Tecsun PL-310 (similar price) but its a simpler radio to use when compared to the PL-310 and has a better speaker i think. I own a Tecsun PL-310 and a PL-330 both great radios awesome for listening to shortwave and on FM you will find stations that you never knew existed.

No single Side band on the PL-380.

The PL-380 has no external antenna port

    Nice toy.

Alligator clip a length of wire to the antenna and you have a great antenna. No SSB is the major downfall of this radio.

  • Thanks OP! Any luck with the short wave frequencies outside Australia?

There is plenty to listen to if you live in a quiet environment, and use a decent antenna. You really need SSB to get the best out of the hobby though.

      • For general listening through out the day, should be fine for the purpose. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/787740 Got the XHDATA D219 and very happy with it. This one looks to be a better radio and catches more frequencies.

        • Yeah definitely a better radio. PL-330 is the best value for money of all SW radios. Pulls in the same signals as the PL880/990, just doesn't have the same build quality and speaker. Great little travel radios.

      • I don't see much use in SSB the majority of the time unless you listen to Hams.

HF aeronautical comms, volmet, time signals, spy stations, OTHR…

          • @bargunhunta: Meh, not sure where you are from but i have found most of these signals are sketchy at best. I have picked up the buzzer at 6 am and V13 and a few other random signals like Russian and Polish morse net but that's is with a 20m long wire outside the city.
Some spy station are still broadcast on AM i think Cuba and north Korea and V13 has a AM broadcast, i have heard a few Russian war stations lately around 8000khz USB.

Arguably the ATS-25 variants would be a better buy than the PL-330 for these tasks. My ATS-20 is better than the PL-330 in reception but its not a easy radio to use and the small screen sucks.

            • @aussieprepper: Yeah I like the idea of the ATS-25 but find myself stuck between either my SDR on the computer or a traditional radio that I can quickly and easily use on the fly.

    • Yea you can find plenty to listen to but it depends on a few factors like location and weather conditions and time. We now have a few Australian stations you can listen to and you can usually pick up RNZ international and radio China in most locations.

    • The PL330 is on another league and cost 3 times more.

    • Hey mate, do you own any shortwave radios?

      • No

        • Welcome to the club, its probably best to sit outside if you can and search for station in the morning and evenings. If you can get as far away from electrical interference as you can.
