FAQ thanks to BG

Question Answer
1. Is Boost operated by Telstra network? Yes, on the full Telstra network
2. Does Boost support 5G? Yes, for all Boost prepaid customers and it is currently on trial until 3 April 2023
From 4 April 2023, 5G network access will be included as standard on your service and we’ll be introducing capped download speed caps on our 4G and 5G networks
3. Does Boost support e-SIM? Sadly not at this stage. However there are plans to do so
4. Do you have to activate the SIM within 30 days? Every Cashrewards Boost cashback up to and including June 30 has been approved (confirmed by TA) - provided you activated within 30 days of order
5. How long is the SIM expiry? Usually 1 year, but to qualify for cashback the SIM must be activated within 30 days of ordering
6. It is showing “new customer” on Boost website. What does this mean? New customer term is only for the additional Boost data, and nothing to do with the cashback offer
7. Can I receive international text message (aka int. roaming) with this SIM by default? Yes, you can receive SMS while overseas, but can’t send outgoing to Australia
8. How long does it take to receive the SIM? According to the Boost Rep: Once dispatched, you should receive your order within the following business days: Metro Areas – 2-5 business days for capital cities – Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart & Brisbane (order before 4pm). Non Metro or Regional / remote areas – 3-7 business days
9. Is porting in a Telstra number to Boost considered a "new customer"? From Boost Mobile rep via dm: Porting a number from Telstra to Boost is definitely considered a new customer
10. Are you able to purchase multiple plans using different names / ID (or can I purchase 4 x plans for the family using my own details)? From Boost Mobile rep via dm: Received clarification from the team and this is a tricky one since for compliance the terms is showing the customer is only allowed 1 sim per transaction but he can buy multiple SIMs and then activate them all under his name and he will then be able to manage all the numbers when he logs into the App with his Boost ID.
11. Information on what to do when the "please try again later" " or "SORRY, SOMETHING WENT WRONG" message comes up List of indicators that can affect how your order is flagged in different financial systems, which can hopefully help you understand what is going wrong. Possible fraud scenario: API returns during purchase - credit to @himalpatel. Live chat advised that if you faced the above fraud scenario message, you need to use your friends details (aka a completely different details) to order
12. Can this be used to recharge? No, this is a starter pack. Using as a "recharge" is being dis-allowed and activating first and moving the number may be allowed but is frowned upon and may not be allowed in future depending on how you ask for it.

Enjoy!

For anyone getting point 11 problem ( "SORRY, SOMETHING WENT WRONG" )
The resolution for me was to use the same email and mobile number as my TelstraID account.

    • Tried this, didn't work for me. Did you use same address too?

      • yes, I matched everything to my TelstraID account (my address was always the same)

        • Still not working for me with Telstra ID details

        • Not for me it doesn't.

          • +2

            @t25: Same.
Are you able to activate existing sims? I'm trying to get an answer from Boost about how long the cooldown period is as that's what I think I've triggered, can't purchase or activate, need a CS rep to activate for me.

            • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: I’ve got no more sims to activate.

With telstra (direct) I have: one post paid and one pre paid service.

With boost I buy one each time they run a deal. Haven’t been able to buy one for a couple of months now.

            • +1

@HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Same can't purchase or activate online as well

  • Coz SB increased $3.

  • Cashback not tracking for me this morning. Will give it a while.

    • +4

Yep. I can see the transactions at Boost end, but they've not pushed them through to us yet. Nothing to worry about, just delayed :)

      • Cool cool.

        • A bunch just reported. Were you one of them?

          • +1

            @tightarse: I haven't reported anything.

            • @wavesgreen: Next batch then lol. Let us know later how it goes. Definitely a delay with API reporting today :)

              • @tightarse: Yeah mine have come through now. :)

                • @wavesgreen: Nice - thanks for letting us know :)

                  • @tightarse: Cashback for 22nd August purchase not tracked yet. I sent a claim few days ago, no response either!

                  • @tightarse: how do i get in touch with the @Boost rep to complain that i keep on getting an error message

    • Mine just came through (8 mins after purchase email).

  • +1

Not tracked yet. Will update when tracked. Tracked now

  • I wonder how you guys do it. Mine always fail. Tried again using a different card, and still no good.

    • If you have ever had a TelstraID check the email and mobile in the order match that of the TelstraID.
      That fixed it for me.

      • I've been porting in and out off Boost. But on Saturday it still didn't work though i used same everything. I will try again later today. Fingers 🤞 this time it will work.

  • Cashback tracked pretty quick. thanks Op for another sim churn

    • Yeah tracking seems to be down to under 2mins now for me.

  • +1

Lol I tried fake name with fake birthday and put down a previous Boost number. Used a different delivery address and still no dice. Can the professionals tell me how they're continuing to get more sims?

    • +1

Done everything you just said and more, can't get anywhere.

    • But you'd still have to enter real payment details, so if Boost is blocking you for some reason, the real payment details is where it would happen. Or are you saying it fails before even reaching payment stage?

      • I used a different card and still get the same error.

  • +1

They must have changed something on their end from ordering x amount of sims..

    • +1

Just got off from support, not sure they fully understood but they said cooldown was usually 24-48hrs, we'll see.

      • +1

        What is "cooldown"?

        • +1

A period of time where you cannot do certain things, examples Adding lots of cards at shopback triggers a cooldown period of 7 days where cannot add more cards.

          • +1

@HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Thanks. So what does it mean in relation to Boost? Just that you have to wait 1 or 2 days after it fails for whatever reason? Or because you've bought too many SIMs, etc?

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: they dont know, these chat reps just lie to get you to leave, they dont actually know what is happening. anything they say is just waffle.

              • @abjsdhasehasee: Agreed but CS rep disappeared from chat for about 10mins, hoping she was asking the relevant department for the answer.

              • +1

@abjsdhasehasee: Yeah sadly true. It's been that way for decades. Whatever gets us off the line. They should just say, "I don't know." Because it wastes so much time and solves nothing.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: I'll have to wait and see, if I can activate a sim in 3 days I'd hope that also means I can purchase again.

              • +1

@HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Can you post the result here even though this thread will show expired? Every single Boost thread someone has this same problem.

Actually if it does work, it still doesn't tell us what causes it to start with. (People didn't purchase a few and only then get blocked, or they would be mentioning that.) It sounds like it's always their first purchase - on that day anyway. Maybe they bought several a week before so then get blocked!? Was it your first SIM purchase? Did you buy a few/several recently before this attempt?

                • @[Deactivated]: Yes plan to reply here, but as someone said above CS reps often just fob ppl off, I was very specific about the situation and they said 'Got it now' disappeared for 10 or so mins then came back with cooldown answer, first step is to leave it all alone in case I delay cooldown timeframe, then see if I can activate, once I can do that then I'll try purchasing, someone else here or another thread said they've been unable to purchase for several months, crossing fingers.

                  • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Months!? Damn… I better take it easy, maybe buy 1 each time instead of 2. But I get worried another deal won't come up in time.

                    • +1

@[Deactivated]: I've purchased heaps without any issue, this just kicked in yesterday for me.
Always used all the same details when purchasing and obviously when activating.

                      • +1

@HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Quite frustrating not able to activate or buy (myself) 😞

it started yesterday for me as well when activating using the same ID, the error comes up after selecting the plan (which is after all the verification steps for ID, email, address are done)

my last purchase was the $4 deal on 22/8.

                • @[Deactivated]: @Faulty P xel
What the rep told me about a few days was rubbish, I still can't activate or purchase nearly 2 weeks later….

                  • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Ok, so maybe it's time for TA/CR to find out wth is going on… Because if people can't activate how can they get their cashback. And Boost should be giving refunds.

                    • @[Deactivated]: Can still activate via a boost rep, when I couldn't do it my self I opened a web chat dialog and gave the rep 5 sim serials to activate, no problem doing that.

                      • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Oh ok. Have you deleted your old numbers? I was thinking, if people have those old numbers still linked to them in the app/their account, maybe that's why!?

Side issue: Something weird is going on with their app. As far as I know I have only one SIM active and it's in a modem for internet. The other numbers in the Boost app are all showing expired or no data left. The only active SIM in the Boost app has been showing 38GB for several days now, but I'm using the internet constantly!? So later tonight I'm going to remove the SIM from the modem, put it in a phone, and call a second phone - to be sure the number in the Boost app really is the SIM in the modem with the stuck GB. It's just weird.

                        • @[Deactivated]: Someone in another thread said they had a glitch and empty sims where still working, then said they'd fixed that, maybe they are still having metering glitches here and there.

I had a working sim, but it couldn't receive sms's except from boost, but it could send sms's, wasn't really an issue for me just something I noticed.

                        • @[Deactivated]: No havn't deleted old sims for a while, think I've got about 20 on the accnt currently but have read the limit is 35.

                          • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Well yeah, it was, but since these Boost deals started they've changed various things a few times. Maybe get on livechat, get them to delete all your expired numbers, then wait a couple of days in case it needs time to "take" - then try self-activation again?

                            • @[Deactivated]: Yeah plan to do that this week, empty and expired removed.

Just tested the sim I started using a few hrs ago, same again can't receive SMS, both I've observed this issue on are from the batch of 5 I had a rep activate for me about a week ago.

                              • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: I know this is unlikely, but is the phone you have the SIM in, a 4G phone? The reason I ask is, I have an old 3G phone that can only receive texts from certain Telcos. i.e. When I log into some sites their 2FA texts never reach the 3G phone… I have to switch the SIM into a 4G phone first.

                                • @[Deactivated]: The sims not receiving are in a TP-Link 4g router, have a nearly expired one that works fine in a 3g phone, and another one working fine in a 4g phone.
It's not the router either, put a known working sim in it and it recieved SMS fine.

                                  • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Hm, ok. Looking forward to seeing what happens after their rep deletes your old numbers. Mind you, if it does put some kind of flag on your account blocking activations, maybe removing the old numbers leaves the flag in place anyway. Sigh!

                                • @[Deactivated]: If your using a 4g USB modem are you getting good speeds?
I used an unbranded 4g USB modem and could only get about 3 or 4 Mbit, changed to a proper router and now get anywhere from 50 - 105 Mbit.

                                  • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: I bought my pocket wifi modem years ago so I assumed it only had 4G. But one day I saw a "5G" on its screen, then it disappeared again. I guessed they were testing 5G. It currently shows 4G. I'll do a speed test in a minute.

Anyway, several months ago I was using Lebara. Then the Boost deals started and things were flying (just like Lebara had/was). Then I went back to Lebara because there was no Boost deal available. That second Lebara SIM was slower, and I think I read on Whirlpool they had slowed their data speed. So I couldn't wait to get back to Boost to have higher speed again. But this is the second Boost SIM in 3 weeks, and they are slower now too. Or at least, sites are taking several times longer to load than they used to.

                                    Download: 26.97 Mbps
                                    Upload: 15.66 Mbps

                                    • @[Deactivated]: My unbranded modem, on settings it had DHCP gateway or server - Disabled and greyed out, I couldn't enable it, who knows what else this thing lacked.
Since switching out to a 4g router I've not seen it go below 50Mbit and that is during peak times, probably average 80-90Mbit and seen it hit 106Mbit, I'm using an external antenna on this router and am in the bush, never thought I'd see 100Mbit with 20ms latency here.

                                      • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: I forget what I was doing now, but years ago I setup something in the modem settings and it greyed-out those same settings. Something to do with my IP address being dynamic and some program needed the IP entered every time I think, which was driving me nuts. Once I had no need for whatever it was I changed it back and it un-greyed it again.

Yeah internet used to be INSTANT here. Click a URL and bang - it was on the screen, fully loaded. Not lately though. e.g. Youtube just took 5 seconds. During the day it can be ~15 seconds. Not sure what's changed in the last few weeks.

I've been waiting years for someone to make a new pocket wifi modem as good as this one, but it doesn't look like anyone is interested in doing so. Every new one that came out I'd pour over the info, read Whirlpool, onto to find a bunch of negatives. I remember one model everyone was spruiking at first (a ZTE I think!?) kept randomly freezing on them requiring a hard reset. I'll probably have to do something sometime because the battery probably won't be available forever.

  • Apologies if its a naive question, but is it possible to port from an existing Boost number to this new number when we get this SIM?

    • Nope.

    • +1

      See FAQ 12

  • Anyone having any luck with boost letting you swap in and out with a new sim?

  • +1

HOW does BOOSt get access to the full Telstra network but no-one else does, not even BELONG, which is owned by Telstra - well ok I understand that one but still doesn't explain how BOOST got the full access.

  • I select my address then it automatically changes to a random address every time - 1 Cabernet St, Point Cook, Vic, 3030 wtf?

  • +2

Boost website is totally absurd - "SORRY, SOMETHING WENT WRONG" with no further explanations; randomly change to some random address; discount code added in and price reduced, but during payment original price was displayed

  • What does everyone do with multiple Sim cards? do you cancel them later too, has it been easy if you have?

    • +1

      They're prepaid not a subscription…

    • +1

When you buy then activate a new Boost SIM it appears in the phone app (along with any expired ones). There's no need to cancel SIMs because they just expire if you don't recharge the next month. But that's only if you're accepting the new phone number each new SIM. If you want to port your main number… well, I don't know what people are doing then. They must be porting out then back in again. I don't use them that way, I only use these for data:

      a) Buy SIM 1 and when it arrives activate it
      b) Accept whatever phone number Boost offers
      c) Use all the data over 2-3 weeks
      d) Discard SIM
      e) Activate SIM 2
      f) Repeat

My permanent number is on a dirt-cheap plan like ALDI $5 per year or Amaysim "Pay As You Go" $10 per year, so I can keep buying these only for the data.

      • My main number is with Amaysim long expiry 365 day 60gb, normal price is $120, last 2 years at EOFY they had it at $60, with cashback, first year got $17 cashback on $60 unlimited calls/sms 60gb data, this year ported out and back in for the same deal with a :-( $7 cashback so at $4.41 pre paid per month for unlimited calls/sms & 60gb data.

        • If I'd seen that I might have done that. My last 2 Boost activations I ran out of data before I could activate the next SIM. So I had to use the Amaysim "As You Go" SIM to activate the next Boost SIM. So instead of paying Amaysim $10 per year you can wind up paying $20 or $30. $4.41 with heaps of data is much better.

          • @[Deactivated]: 4.41 a mnth apprx, 60 upfront, 7 cashback, the 60gb is for the year, but as a main number w/ unlimted calls/sms it works great, first year I still had just over 30gb left which could roll over, however the $60 price is "new customer only … pmsl" so I ported out and back in as a "new customer" so no data rollver, lol, like I'd care about that.

            • @HopSkipJumpFallSplat: Argh never mind me… You said $4.41 a month, not year, lol. $52.92 a year is still $20-$30 more than what I pay, but good for others who "need" the permanent number cheap. I might make a bookmark of this anyway in case I keep missing activating new SIMs before previous SIM data runs out. Boost sends data usage warnings to the SIM… which is in a modem… so I never see them. I have to remember to check manually every few days.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: I write dates for boost orders on notepad on my phone, then when they arrive I write a date about 3 or 4 days before they need to be activated, I have about 40 amaysims and boost sims on my PC table, all dated either on the sim packets or if un opened on the envelope they arrive in.

Big black marker comes in handy in many many ways.

  • +1

Need kogan or catch connect to do a deal to pair with this

  • Any creative uses for these sims? Or just get the $$?

  • your id may be leaked for such small profit.

    • +1

My info was leaked by Optus in spite of not being a customer for something like 13 years, because government require them to keep your info on file. So no point worrying about it thanks to inept government rules. i.e. If one company doesn't leak it, another will.

      • Yeah same. I was an Optus customer for like 3 months years ago. Got my info leaked. Not even for profit.
