Been using this for a week. The only downside so far that I didn't realise before buying is the curved screen on the edges.

    • hard to notice in the pictures

      • +6

They did a good job at hiding it. This shows the edge better than their renders. Lighter colours like your whites will look dark on the edges which can be off putting in some apps.

    • +1

And you may want to avoid any moisture whatsoever lol.

      • +2

mine got submerged in 50cm of swamp water for a few seconds and came out fine except now the direction i face on google maps is always wonky (doesnt matter for when driving tho just for walking)

        • +1

My edge 30 fusion (no water damage) gets confused sometimes too. You can calibrate the direction by tapping your blue dot.

        • clear gps data once, might help

      • My Edge 20 didn't have a curved/edge screen.

    • What are your impressions of the camera?

      • +1

Having come from an Edge 20 it's certainly an upgrade with better focus and colours. By default it won't shoot in 200MP and I wouldn't bother switching it to that either as there's really not a noticeable difference. I think the only weak point is trying to capture photos when there's low light at night. It does a pretty poor job.

    • I was looking to buy one but didn't like the look of the curved screen either. I don't get how it's meant to be a selling point. It looks like you'd always be having to hold the phone carefully so you don't touch it.

How do you find it? What's the advantage meant to be?

    • Heavy? Weight wise

      • +1

About 198g. Having come from a 168g phone it's amazing how much weight an extra 30g adds.

  • +1

This or Pixel 7 Pro? For camera mainly.

    • +4

      Pixel just for camera.

      • +4

I think for $700 it's got a decent camera system. It's also pretty good in terms of display, processor, charger, speakers, features, software and design. Not bad.

To think that Lenovo initially tried to charge AUD $1,400 for this Edge 30 Ultra. Facepalm.

        The more notable flaws/drawbacks are:
        - Mediocre Battery Life
        - Poor Durability (heavy, slippery, fragile, curved)
        - No IP68 Water Resistance
        - No Headphone Jack
        - No microSD slot
        - No Dual SIM
        - No IrDa Blaster
        - also lacks a User Removable Battery but that's extinct besides the Fairphone 5, Samsung xCover 6 Pro, and AGM G2.

        • +6
          • No Dual SIM

          It's dual SIM.

          • @Clear: I stand corrected.

Other points look valid. It's still good value at $700. I'm not sure it's better value than the Xiaomi Poco F5, which is currently at AUD $550 price. Deal time?

            https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005570274068.html?gateway…

That Xiaomi one gives you a better design, better battery life, IrDa Blaster, and Headphone Jack. It's competitive on all the other aspects. However the camera is pretty meh, compared to the Moto which is good but not great. Oh, also the MIUI software is much worse, but if you prefer to, there's a decent amount of community support for it (custom recovery, root, kernel, mods, official Custom ROMs, etc etc).

            • @Kangal:

I'm not sure it's better value than the Xiaomi Poco F5, which is currently at AUD $550 price.

              $606.95

On AliExpress GST is added during checkout for goods shipped to Australia.

            • +2

@Kangal: safer to get it from Kogan for $599 https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/xiaomi-poco-f5-5g-12gb-256gb-bl… at least covered by ACL and a warranty.

              • +2

@shxhshzhz: It's Kogan tho. Expect a marathon to get any outcome.

              • @shxhshzhz: True.
Not sure if it's worth posting as a deal. The Xiaomi is definitely the overall better device, except the cameras.

Both devices are so close as to being viable high-end devices that it's frustrating. Both companies have purposely gimped features so they wouldn't cannibalise their other products. Problem is this hurts the early adopters getting a subpar product, and it hurts the companies who don't get the amount of sales/frenzy they hoped to achieve. And that's why the inferior Samsung A53 will outsell them.

In the case of the Xiaomi Poco F5, if they merely added a microSD slot, IP68 Waterproofing, and kept it competitive at a AUD $550 price, people would've gone bananas for it. In the case of the Moto 30 Ultra, they should've copied the Xiaomi but at a higher AUD $800 price, and notable upgrade in camera, software, support, and small things all-round. Again the market would've gone bananas. Just combine a very consumer friendly options, at good value prices, do some heavy Guerilla marketing, and get those positive reviews just before the devices are available, in-stock, or pre-order. The marketing is definitely important, but so are the other things I mentioned…. but they all get overlooked year after year. The days of the Samsung Note 4 and OnePlus 3 are way behind us.

                • @Kangal: If Motorola could sort out updates and cameras, Samsung would have a really strong competitor to worry about. I've posted the F5 before, not popular at this price.

              • @shxhshzhz: Yes, I ordered in early August with a shipped date of 28th August, then changed to 1st September, then 22 nd Septemeber and now showing 28th September. :(

            • +1

              @Kangal: Snapdragon 7+ vs Snapdragon 8+

        • Im confused. Is it Lenovo or Motorola?

          • +1

@nuttapillar: Lenovo owns Motorola and it operates as a subsidiary.

    • Pixel 8 will come out soon. Means pixel 7 should be on discount and it may sell out.

  • +2

Camera is shtt all others are great.

    • +3

I think hands down Pixel's computational photography are the best amongst Android.

      • The Pixel 6a is THE best, undisputed, for both day and night photos, based on MKBHD's randomised round-robin blind photo test.

        • Price?

        • One guy's test to rule all tests?

          • @belongsinforums: @belongsinforums Absolutely YES. If you've actually done his test, you'd know that there was little to no chance for bias, because the results were purely based on blind tests… by around 600,000 participants.

I don't care if you don't agree, or if anyone brings up some special camera performance score from some reputable company… or if some company like Sony boasts that they've got the greatest camera, yet again, because it doesn't matter. Blind votes matter, and the winner is clear - is the Pixel 6A. And similarly, Sony phones, is purely trash for photos compared to every other company, including the Chinese phones.

            https://mezha.media/en/2022/12/22/mkbhd-has-published-the-re…

            • @ram4ram: ah. thank you for reassuring me that people, and certainly media, never lie

              • @belongsinforums: OK. Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but either way, all good, i've no horse in this race. Do you have any reason to doubt the results?

Who knows, what if MKBHD manipulated the results. What if Google paid off MKBHD… and Sony forgot to pay him. But as far as I can tell, there's no reason for any suspicion.

            • @ram4ram: The big reason for Pixel winning is the software. The optimisations of Google Camera are unbeatable. GCam ports for other phones when optimised end up being significantly better than stock.

That's the weak point for Motorola. I get a huge boost in quality with GCam.

              • @Clear: Yeah GCam is awesome. Use it if yo have the option… which I did for my old ZTE Axon 7. Camera was a POS but the $80 phone camera was certainly more than acceptable after GCam.

  • +1

    Good deal.
Been using it for 3 days and so far so good. I use Nova launcher to apply my settings across phones which largely works well.

On a side note, has anyone got a GCAM app + config for the ultra?

  • -6

    Will buy at $199

  • +1

I'm so impressed and intrigued with the specs and value that this phone offers. And then I remember that the camera is below par, and I just know if I spent $600+ on a phone with a crap camera, I'd regret it eventually. No matter how good it was in every other respect. Why can't Moto sort their cameras out?

    • -1

Well my s23U 512GB ended up costing me about $800 with bonus watch 6 ( upgraded from W5 due to OOS) so YMMV

      • got a link to the deal?

        • +2

      • +1

S23U is THE goat phone, well done

    • Yea I agree the cameras are pretty bad on the Motorola phones

    • +1

I've had one for a few months now. Personally I think the camera is great, although my previous phone was an S10+ so that's a bit older. Pics look as good as my wife's s22 I reckon, I'm sure purists would disagree but it looks fine to me. The best but is the fast charger, gets nearly full in 15 minutes. Amazing.

    • The Pixel 6a deal was better, no?

  • how did u get that price again?

    • enter SEPT10 into the coupon code section in checkout, SEPT15 if you have eBay plus.

  • +3

    No eSIM, no deal

    • I thought the edge 30 ultra had esim support

      • No. The Razr and newer Edge 40 models would have eSIM support

  • +2

    My experience so far:
    Battery life average
    Bootloader unlockable
    Android 13 available
Moto features are cool (like karate chop for flash light)
Ready for is great (use phone whilst on computer)
Camera is ok. Terrible with moving subjects or low light but pretty good in good lighting conditions
Fast charging and charger in box
    Performance is pretty good

    • Thanks 🙏

    • +1

Battery life is pretty good imo, above average
And to call it fast charging is almost an understatement, it's ridiculously fast compared to most phones

    • Moto features are cool (like karate chop for flash light)

Does this work ALL the time?

I have a Pixel, and the 'tap tap' on the back to do something, like flash light, sometimes doesn't work. It seems to have fallen asleep, and it works again after you've turned on the screen, and then 'tap tap'.

  • +3

    200mp camera? really?

  • not as much bang 4 buck as the edge 30 fusion for $349 ~yesterday, that was a clear winner

  • Who owns moto

    • +1

      Lenovo I think

  • Done deal Back to full price

  • Anyone have any idea how to transfer apps and data to Motorola edge 30 ultra? Is there an app
