minus18…another way to normalise the fetish of minor attracted person

  • +12

    that is a suss name…

    • +2

I agree. Regardless of the intended meaning, from a marketing/branding perspective it's a terrible name, terrible messaging.

  • +2

The shop name is disgusting and won't ever get my support.
Despite the LGBT group denying any association with pedosexual behaviour this shop called minus18 are using the banner of LGBT community.

I miss the rainbow flag. Nice to look at, clean, simple, represented everyone equally (which is the whole point). The new verision with the awful triangles seems like a joke created to see how much they could ruin the flag before people push back

    • +1

I don't think anyone is preventing use of the standard rainbow flag……
But that flag doesn't include the non-rainbow colours like pink and brown, so it doesn't represent everyone equally, i guess?

Minus18 has been around for a very long time. I went to a support group when I was 16 to support my gay friend at the time through this company. This was 17 years ago. But I also remember going to a LGB night they had at The Peel (gay club in Melbourne) for under 18s that myself and a couple of friends went to at 16. Now that I think about it, it was kinda creepy and predatory.

Do you feel the same way about breast cancer funding?

      • +3

Funding for research to cure an illness is a different matter all together!
My mum had breast cancer, her sister had it eventuating to a double mastectomy, her other sister has breast cancer atm, 5 of our family friends have died from breast cancer, and currently 3 personal friends have it now and getting radiation.
Don't compare an illness to a persons sexuality preference

Just be honest about why you’re against this crowd, don’t hide behind other illogical reasons.

          • +2

@Fish and Grits: Hiding behind? Why is there all this hype about gay rights and black lives matter… Where is is coming from? Gay people have had rights for years. Black lives matter…. ALL LIVES MATTER! If i stood out in a protest saying white lives matter…. Suddenly i'm racist.
Get with the program. Why should a city council fly a flag of sexuality= the gay pride flag. Ok fine, where is the straight pride flag? Do they fly that? No, because it's discrimination against someone.
EVERYBODY FLIES UNDER THE 2 FLAGS WE NOW HAVE.
Stop shoving stuff in people's faces because you think you're right or protesting. We have all had the 'same' rights for years. Get over it

          • +1

@Fish and Grits: And your term of "this crowd" speaks volumes as to how you look at people!

    Thanks OP!
I just spent $50 at the store to support all that they do for queer and questioning adolescents. It's a shame we live in a world still awash with ignorant bigots (as evidenced here in the comments). It's a shame acceptance of others is so hard for some.

It shouldn't be pushed onto kids at such a young age. Let the kids be kids. Let them have their innocence. Why should they have to think about such things before they can even count or know the alphabet. How many kids commit suicide because of gender?? And i do mean kids. Why has this become such a subject in recent years?? It is a shame…. a damn shame!
Let it be for when they KNOW the actions and decisions they're making. And it's NOT adolescents we're talking about …. it's K1-up.

      • +1

@teddiebear You're right - let kids be kids …and support them them when they need support. Self awareness starts to develop around 4 or 5 for some. Just because the majority of people don't find themselves questioning their gender or sexuality doesn't mean we cannot support those that do. Experiences of stigma, prejudice, discrimination, abuse and bullying are the number 1 cause for poorer mental health and higher risks of suicide amongst gender-diverse and queer youth. Let us not forget that it was up until 1994, less than 20 years ago, that being gay was considered a crime. Society has come a long way since then, but there is still a long way to go, with LGBTQI+ people still facing high rates of discrimination and abuse. It was only a few weeks ago when relentless bullying led to another transgender child, 13 year old Onyx Lambert, taking his life 😢

Problem is they are allowing surgeries for gender identity at 13. It should be planned for when they are at age of consent which is 16. And leading to that would be supportive networking.
This is a serious life changing decision that really can't be reversed without consequences.
That kid may have still been alive and well had the mental maturity also supported the decision to transition.
The world is becoming more and more dangerous. Psychological support until capacity is achieved for surgery would be the proper approach.
Being gay is a feeling that is from within.
Becoming transgender is modifying your body surgically to alter with what a person feels they align to..
Not really the same, despite flying under the overarching banner.
