do you scan the sticker barcode only, or both the item and sticker barcode - and in which order? - and what happens when you apply the chicken sticker to a banana? lol

    • +4

You either get a bent chicken or a banana with feet. :)

I think it shouldn't matter which order you scan the codes, as long as both go in. Incidentally that implies you could print your own stickers if you wanted since it's only the barcode that matters to the scanner. I wonder what would happen if you put the PDF on a Kindle and scanned that. LOL

Very retro marketing. The world is going paperless; they resort to brochures or the need to ask staff for stickers.

Also I wonder if there will ever be any specials on Schweppes during this period. If they were say discounted to $1, then you could get it free. Hmm, I think not.

  • +9

Who falls for this gimmicky marketing? seriously…

  • +11

I know a few places they could stick it

    • I don't think ccwwayne will be posting another 'Woolworths Sticky Special' in a hurry. I can't remember the last time I've seen more -ve than +ve feedback for a supermarket special!

  • +3

you cant imagine the backlash woolies are getting on facebook, they are okay for an added extra special, but no fresh food deals and all that plastic, just seems to be an utter waste of time

  • +2

worst promotion ever, what are they going for the pre school kid market ?

  • +8

what a lame marketing gimmick! first it was "2 for" deals, now they are trying to make you use stickers in order to get a discount. if they want to offer a special then put the reduced price on the shelf.

  • +2

Yeah wtf, if it's Discounted I shouldn't need to bring in some stickers. Isn't that the staffs job anyway?

    • -1

I think this is their response to posters like MyGroceries, and shoppers like me who go in, grab 15 Lindt choc bars at $2 each, pay and leave. They want us to read the rest of the offers.

Maybe the next counter move will be somebody posting sheets of barcodes to scan at the self-service counters and it's back to grab and leave behaviour. Then they will have wasted all the expense of making stickers and pissed off customers as well.

    • -5

the idea behind it, is YOU choose what special you want

      • +2

The choice is already limited to specific brands and products. It's not that it's store wide, like a Mitre 10 sticker sale.

        • That was in response to "isn't that the staffs job anyway?" from poxy, maybe you didn't see my comment above?

        • I saw an ad for the stickers which made me think that we get to choose the products (I guess a bit like Coles' "My5" except with stickers). I was kinda disappointed to find out that they only apply to certain products.

  • +2

I saw this online and can not figure out how to use it. Is it online only? Do I seriously have to track down a staff member and ask them to gift me a sticker?

This promo will be an epic fail.

  • +1

Been to a few Woolies stores and have yet to see these "magical" stickers. Massive fail so far…

  • These stickers are sent to you with the weekly catalog.

    • +1

Which, of course, relies on you receiving the weekly catalogue. Catalogue distribution works on someone in the local area being paid to deliver them to our mailbox. Unfortunately, the local "someone" in our area delivers them randomly through the week (we will sometimes receive both last week and this week's catalogue on the same day), or not at all (we've worked out they like to go away for school holidays and 2-3 weeks of January each year because catalogues are not delivered during those times each year).

  • +1

I had a half empty sheet handed to me by an old bloke who was finished, then just asked at the service desk for a full one. I had already grabbed some things on their list so it was handy. It says only one sticker of each type or whatever per transaction but the kid on the checkout put multiple through at the same price.

As with anything it doesn't save you money unless you are buying the items anyway.

  • +1

This has to be one of the stupidest promotions I've heard of, why not just have these items on sale. The backlash from this will be great, it's a good way to make your customers hate your business.

    • You only get one of each barcode per catalog, whereas if they made the sale item already incorporate the coupon you could get unlimited discounted items. Also allows them to make the coupons expiry more than a week.

Coles technically already has the same thing except it's a cutout which you hand to the checkout chick instead of sticking it to the product.

  • +12

Ridiculous concept. This will last another week, maximum. Wastes paper, and wastes time of both customers and staff.

  • I agree that this is stupid, however I was at woolies yesterday and they had schweppes bottles at 2 for $3, so I got two bottles. I went to the counter and the lady had the sheet of stickers and just scanned the $1 off schweppes one, making it $0.50 a bottle!! Pretty good if you ask me!

    • +3

They were supposed to charge you $2 for 2 bottles - $3 for 2 less $1 sticky crap discount

You did well to get 2 for $1

BTW also at least in theory if you buy say 20 1.25l Schweppes the price should be $30 less $1 discount - sticky specials are supposed to work only once

This campaign is the crappiest I have seen from a supermarket in a LONG TIME

Its confusing and wasteful - but dont expect it to stop soon, WW spent $5m on setting it up…

  • +3

epic fail, no wonder why they are falling behind Coles lately.

    • +5

I love how Coles in response just dropped some of their prices - eg. made all 1.25l Schweppes $1 per bottle and 2l Schweppes $1.47 per bottle. No stickers, no BS, get as many as you want at that price.

      • Clearly Coles' marketing department knows what it's doing :P

  • Love it or hate it Coles are totally pwning then with that "Down Down" jingle.
    Simple, annoying but highly effective.

Agree that Woolies have completely and utterly failed to counter them. They started out with some tired and halfheatered "price knockout" BS campaign but it was a weak idea and went nowhere.
The sticky specials are insulting to customers and wasteful. Remind me of busy work at Kindy. The actual specials themselves are relatively pissweak too.
I didn't buy anything at Woolies this week.

  • Got caught behind someone fiddling with these STUPID things yesterday.
Just more reason to shop where you dont get screwed around.
Coles are into this mad crap too but not as much as WW.
    Go Aldi & IGA !!!!!!

    • -1

IGA? You're not serious right? That's the only place where you can pick up a 600mL Coke for $4.

  • urgh woolies…

  • +2

I was absolutely shocked to see that Woolworths sent out this weeks catalogue wrapped in plastic so that the sticker sheet could be included with it. In my opinion it is environmental vandalism to deliver that much unwanted plastic to households all over Australia.

I also agree that the stickers are a pretty daft concept. I haven't used them as none of the specials appealed to me at all, but surely it will only make things more fiddly at the checkout as you will have to make sure that the staff have noticed the stickers you have put on each item, or you won't get the discount.

It also bugs me that they are marketing them as "can be used on existing specials", as an earlier poster said, the stickers are only valid for 1 week, so they are hardly going to make the mistake of having a great special and a sticker discount on an item in the same week.

If the stickers had a longer expiry date (so they could be used with specials during promotional periods), then they might get my attention, but otherwise I agree, complete waste of time and resources.

  • I think the idea is about impulse buying, especially if people bring their kids shopping - I can save $$ more if I just stick this on the product. They can see that the Rewards card idea does not seem to be working, as people are shopping around for the best deals.

It would be interesting to compare some of the mark ups of these super markets, and what they are paying to the farmers. How is it that a kilo of frozen potato chips costs the same or even less than a kilo of potato?

    • Because they import them from the Netherlands

      • That's right, it's in the September Choice issue. A lot of the food they sell is non-Australian.

  • +1

This is such a stupid gimmick. They've just arbitrarily limited some of their specials and the stickers have no real benefits. Why would I bother to remember bringing stickers to Woolworths when Coles has similar specials on some of the items anyways? As an example, Woolworths had a "50 cents off Arnott's biscuits" which bought Tim-Tams down to $2. But Coles have Tim-Tams on special for $2 with no stupid sticker required (and no restriction of the special only applying to one item).

  • +1

This is a waste of time and paper, if they really wanted to give discounts just apply it to the advertised items and make available to everyone.

  • Worst promotion ever!

  • +2

Most retarded marketing move ever. Whoever came up with the idea needs to be fired.

  • +2

    To sum it up…

-Assumes you have reliable junk mail delivery or if not, assumes you can be bothered finding stickers in store
-Makes it more tedious to buy specials in bulk
-Wastes time putting the stickers on the product and making sure they notice at checkout
-Adds more time to shop because aisles are more congested from people stopping to put stickers on and finding where you've stuck the barcode at checkout
-Waste of materials to get a special that you used to get for no extra effort
-Coles is showing Woolies up by giving the same specials without stickers

  • +1

All the more reason to shop at Aldi where you don't have to mess with such stupidity

  • +1

Anyone tried to use the $2 off ANY Dove products sticker on the single Dove beauty bars/bar soap? They're only $1.25 each, so in theory they'll come down to $1.25-$2 = FREE right?

  • I've purposely NOT been buying products relying on the stickers, so this promotion has totally backfired on me!

  • this idea has totally put me off woolworths. these sorta gimmicks are not needed!
