Seems like a joke from 9gag saying people buy winrar

    • hehe yeah, but link is real.

    • They discovered viral marketing and it works for them so far.

    • PeaZIP is little better specially with TAR etc, open source as well.

      • +1

        7zip supports tar doesn't it?

        • Supported formats:

Packing / unpacking: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM

        • yeah, but PeaZIP has more features for GZ and other formats. I use both along with WinRAR as default.

      • +4

        7Zip for life homes!!

      • +1

I've switched to peazip too. There's not a lot of difference between tools that essentially just uncompress files, but its been great.
I just discovered the 'peatools' that come with it which is super handy for checking checksums and such

    • +2

      Does it support .rar ?

      • Yes, it does

      • +1

        Only for uncompressing.

    • +8

Exactly, who pays for WinRAR when you have 7-zip

      • Some folks just like to pay for things apparently

      • -2

        Ballers.

      • -2

        People who have used both.

      • +2

i mean you can also use winrar for free forever. that's kinda the point. it's a great company that provided a lot and never forced anyone to pay, so now people would like to show their appreciation and support them

      • I used free version WinRAR when I need to archive lot of files each to separate zip.
Wandering if 7-zip or any other can do it?
        Any idea? Thanks.

        • Yes, there's an option "split to volumes" in 7-zip

          • @tukanglistrik: Thank you, but I mean not split by volumes. I need every file put to separed zip archive with same names as original file names. About 8000 files.
As far as I do know back to time when I did it, only WINRAR was able to do it

    • +1

Yes. But where is the fun in it?

    • +3

And 7z has by far the best compression ratio and speed compared to rar and zip.

    • +3

Run Powershell in Admin mode and paste
      winget install —id=7zip.7zip -e

      Sit back and relax.

    this deal is a prank.

  • +2

    Thanks got one

Does the software still work forever regardless of whether you purchase it or not..

    • still work forever

Depends on your view of climate change.

    • Ah yes I remember the reminder of my trial being over 1000 days expired. Good times

  • I still have my pkzip founder's membership

    • I still remember his death, it was in a computer magazine back then

      • I'll drink to that…

        • please don't jv, we need you for the bold kingdom.

  • Bought 6

  • +3

Please don’t tell me people actually use WinRAR in 2023.

    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/winrar-zero-d…

This isn’t a deal. It’s shit software for $20 when free, safe and open source alternatives exist.

    • +1

Looks like you need to stop using 7-zip now and go around telling everyone it's shit software: https://www.scappman.com/post/everything-you-need-to-know-ab…

      • -1

Did you even compare the two?

WinRAR exploit allows embedding malicious scripts inside archives. The 7-zip allows privilege escalation to a user who already has access. Neither are great, but the WinRAR one is by far worse.

But the most important part is the exploit is actually due to a Windows help file bug.

  • -2

    Lol

    • Your vote will get revoked if you don’t give a reason.

Edit: why am I being down voted for trying to help?

      • ?

Personally I've used 7zip for a decade or longer, it's free, it's a much smaller footprint.
I think Windows 11 now does the same archives too.

  • -2

    Nope

    • Your vote will get revoked if you don’t give a reason.

      • +1

        Freeware does the same thing.

  • +2

Windows 11 will include rar support in the next update/s…. No need to buy.

  • -2

Surely this is an ironic joke…

Winrar has been obsolete for a long time and had gone completely out of favour by 2005. Almost no-one has paid for Winrar since 7-zip first came out over 20 years ago and there lots of other free alternatives nowadays too.

    • Not that I need that feature, but you can't make RAR files with 7-zip. You can only extract them.

    • +1

      does anyone remember WinACE ?

  • +3

    Better than paying for WinZip

  • Extract Now ftw

  • -1

Plenty of free programs that do way more than this joke software.

  • -1

This is shit, nobody needs this

  • hehe
