AMD Ryzen 5 5600 CPU with Wraith Cooler $186.15 Delivered ($181.77 with eBay Plus) @ Computer Alliance eBay

770
SEPP15SEPP17

Pretty good deal on this AMD Ryzen 5 5600 processor. While it still uses the older AM4 socket (not the AM5 like the newer CPU's), this is a good deal at just over half the price of the new AMD 7600 series. It's about the same speed as an i5 12400f, sometimes faster and sometimes slower. A good all-rounder.

Details of the CPU:
Socket AM4
3.6GHz Base Clock, 4.4GHz Max Boost Clock,
6 Cores, 12 Threads,
PCIe 4.0,
3MB L2 Cache, 32MB L3 Cache,
65W TDP,
Includes Wraith Stealth Cooler
Warranty: 3 Year Australian Warranty & Support
Note: No integrated graphics, needs an external graphics card.

    yes good deal!

but i just got my AMD Ryzen 5 7600 CPU+Gigabyte B650M bundle from ebay for $497

    • +3

      Good choice.
I was looking for a Mini ITX motherboard, so figured I'd save the extra as they seem to start from about $330 for an AM5 board at the moment.

  • Any cheap motherboards to go for it?

    • +2

The Asus Prime B550 is $124 with the same coupon from Computer Alliance on eBay.
You could look at that same Asus Prime from Umart for $115, or there are some B450 motherboards (which are limited to PCIe 3.0) starting from $99 at Scorptec.

  • +1

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175280942403 5500 is also slightly cheaper than retail $135

    • You don't want to over capitalize on the Am4 platform depending what GPU you paid it with.

My B350 has the 3600 & 6700 10GB that's pretty much the end of the line.

    • +4

The 5500 is fine for a workstation/office PC, although I'd pay the extra for the 5600 if you plan on getting into gaming with it.

    • +2

You'd be missing out on PCIe 4.0 as well.

  • Is this better then the i3-12100F?

    • +1

      Yep.
i3 12100f might be a little bit faster in some single core tasks, but this 5600 is more in line with the 12400f.

5800x3d for $480 with plus is not bad

    • +2

      It's currently $466.86 @ Amazon via Germany

    • +2

Why wouldn't you just buy a 7600x at 350ish then? I think most game benchmark 7600x is similar or faster than 5800x3D.

Unless you already have a system and only want to upgrade CPU I guess.

      • +5

Yeah becomes buying new mobo and ram if go 7600x

"I gUeSs". No, that is exactly the reason. If I have a fantastic MEG Unify X570, 64GB of DDR4, etc. Why would i just jump up to an entry model 7600x system? 5800X3D is the way to go for existing AM4 users. I adopted Ryzen early in 2017, so i know from experience that it's better waiting for future AM5 series.

        • Fair enough

        • You ok?

          • -1

@soymeat: Sitting here thinking about how good budget heatsinks are these days. Got a few Thermalright Peerless Assassins hooked up to a 5800X3D, and 5900X, and it just performs as good or even better than the much more expensive Noctuas I used to run. How are you? Or you just here to troll?

  • +1

    Ordered one. Thanks.

  • Worth upgrading a 3600 with a 2060 or nah?

    • The 5600 could be 25% faster or thereabouts, but the 3600 is still a pretty good chip, so might not be worthwhile. I'd say you'd be better off going for the AM5 platform instead, the r5 7600 would be a bigger jump up in performance along with support for DDR5 etc., but at a fair bit higher cost, though maybe by next year they will come down closer to this pricing when the next gen comes out.

      • +2

        25% is very generous, I went from a 2600 to a 5600 and got under 20%

        • Avg for 3600 -> 5600 is more like 10-15%. Personally I wouldn't bother, but given its hit and miss (some apps/games will be +30%, others more like 0% or even slightly negative) it really depends on what you're doing.

5800X3D is a far more reliably material improvement for game performance but demand is still too high at this point, at almost $500 I'd prefer to just be patient and wait for when I can justify a larger system upgrade to AM5.

    • If you're gaming at 1080p it may be worthwhile, otherwise I'd probably give it a miss as the 3600 is still decent just falls a bit short in gaming at 1080p. May want to consider the 5700X at $269 for the extra 2 cores and better gaming performance (it's a tad faster than the 5600 in gaming).

    • Save your money and upgrade to a DDR5 system when you can.

      • Or don't. 5800X3D in AM4 will keep him going for years. Wait for AM5 to mature a bit. DDR5 is not some magic upgrade that totally changes everything. I wouldn't bother going from 3600 to 5600, though. Make it a worthwhile upgrade > more cores or 3D-cache, or both.

    • -1

Nothing wrong with 3600. I'd only do what I did and slot in an 5800X3D and call it a day.

  • +1

Good chip, though waiting for a 3D.

    • I purchased one of these chips when my old computer died. I like them. Single thread performance is very good comapred to older AMD CPUs. I have it overclocked from 3.7 to 4.7 MHz. However, if you want to overclock, purchase a high end cooling solution. If a program maxxes out every single core (which is rare) it can cause my machine to overheat and shut down, especially in summer.

Thanks ordered two to replace the kids 2600 CPUs

  • +2

Just did a drop in upgrade from my R5 1600 to this at the same price. Have got my money's worth out of that old B350 motherboard!

  • +1

Just uprageded my 2600x. I was waiting for the 5600x to drop down but I'm sure this will be great

    • From what I was reading, the 5600x is only marginally better than the 5600 for a pretty big price jump. However, it is also on sale from Computer Alliance at a fair discount if you’re keen.

  • Wondering if it would drop into my Dell from this old deal? Faster and uses less power than the 2700x.

X370 would support it, but I doubt Dell ever supplied a bios update to enable it…

  • Want to have a go at a Promox Home Server
    Is this going to work?
Above CPU -AMD Ryzen 5 5600
ASUS X570-Pro TUF Gaming WiFi AMD AM4 ATX Motherboard
ECC RAM - Micron 4x32G mta18asf4g72az-3g2r micron 32gb ddr4 ecc udimm memory - crucial.com says it is compatible with this MB
    plus low end graphics card.

    • I don't see why not? If so, it'd be plenty for a few virtual machines/containers, noting that the processor has 6 cores/12 threads.
Proxmox is compatible with most hardware, might be worth checking the forums before ordering the rest of your gear.

    • +1

Sounds good, bud. Just make sure the AM4 board actually supports ECC error reporting, etc. All boards support running ECC ram, but some vendors, like MSI have it set to only run with ECC functions disabled. I said this below, but I just ordered this, 32GB 3200mhz ECC ($155 from Amazon Germany), Asrock B550M ( supports ECC functions), Thermalright Peerless Assassin ($55 on Amazon - love these, keeps my 5800X3D cool and a fraction of the price of Noctua). Will make a good NAS/Docker machine.

  • Wraith cooler is terrible.

    • So? Get a Thermalright Peerless Assassin - Amazing heatsink for only $50 - compatible with both AM4 and 5, so you'll keep it for years.

      • Yeah I put a noctua on mine because I like sff and needed to maximise air flow. I was just saying this downward facing fan is rubbish. I dropped 20c when I replaced the cooler

  • +1

Okay, ended up getting one of these + Asrock B550M + 32GB 3200mhz ECC ram + Thermalright Peerless Assassin. Going to make it a NAS/Docker machine. Will free up my 5800X3D machine to just game, etc.
