  • Work with paypal?

    • I would expect so.

      • I have been able to use Activ Visa gift cards when linked to PayPal in the past.

      • If you go to the FAQs on the Activ Visa gift card website, the very first question is Can I add my Activ gift card to PayPal? (The answer written in the FAQ says yes.)

      • If this deal is active till tomorrow can we price beat it with Officeworks (Unlucky with vanilla as no stocks nearby)

        • +4

It ultimately depends on what the Officeworks staff member serving you thinks.

The complication is that the title of the product mentions a purchase fee, so that would likely cause a staff member to add on the purchase fee to the $200 list price.

Btw, someone already attempted a price beat and was refused (and so was I on my own attempt).

    • Doesn't work for me

  • +1

    will this be hacked?

    • +2

      It can be. Easily.

  • +39

Is this a deal or is this the ozbargain version of money laundering?

    • Probably aimed at people left with digital coles mastercard.

    • Things like this are helpful if you're trying to get past a spend threshold on a credit card to trigger rewards. I've currently got an HSBC card that wants me to spend $3k in the first 3 months, for example.

  • +1

if you value your amazon account, be very careful with adding multiple cards to purchase all kinds of gift cards for example this one

it will lead to permanent ban from using Amazon

    • +1

      Make a new account then?

      • +1

It's not easy with Amazon. They have a lot of ban evasion systems in place. For starters your address is likely blacklisted too.

        • +1

So if i move to a new rental i might not be able to create a Amazon account?

    • +1

Why? Good to know, as I used my main account. Next time I’ll use a different one.

      • +1

Amazon has a way to tell the main account and other accounts you using is linked or not. Even isolated 4g network plus different devices, similar addresses they can match together.

    • +1

Shoot I did a few bunch just then, hopefully it doesn’t trigger their system

      • +1

I bought 3 in 2 transactions ($100 ones). Been booted from account (need to login again). Hopefully just temporary.

        • My order cancelled. Price increased to include fee. Spoke to helpdesk, got the difference refunded and reordered

    • Why would this trigger a ban? Is it against amazon policy?

  • Can I buy this with a credit card and then use it as a way to pay for government bills/rates but still earn reward/ff points?

    • the coles master card works for sure. not sure with this one but i think it will work.

    • I have used the card for food etc and works pretty much for everything (except as an Opal, but let’s you top up the Opal). I think there will be a charge for paying ato (mentioned by others).

      • for visa, I think it is 0.4%

      • I am fairly sure you currently cannot use Activ Visa gift cards to send payments to the ATO (at least through Government EasyPay or myGov).

      • Dang so these cards don’t work on Opal?

        • +1

They should work to top up via the app or via a retailer but they can't be used in place of an Opal card.

    • Should work if the biller supports prepaid visa cards (no 3DS) or Paypal. Not sure it is worth the effort to save ~1%.

      • +3

Keep in mind you also need to wait for a physical gift card to be mailed to you. Fingers crossed no one steals your mail, as the gift card is activated before it is packaged and sent to you.

When I ordered a gift card a couple of weeks ago, I had to wait four business days for it to show up.

        • If overly concerned about amazon deliveries, have it sent to a locker?

        • Also, if these gift cards are prone to being hacked, isn't waiting for the delivery a little dicey, considering they're activated before being shipped?

    • Theoretically yes, but I haven't been able to get these Activ cards to work with ATO payments, it gets declined when I recently tried. I as mentioned the issuer is blocking ATO

      • may be you forgot the ato fees? and exceed the card value ? this from heritage bank, no different from coles mc

  • +3

    Thanks OP.
Had some promotional balance on 3 amazon accounts and it worked on these cards.
Now i can convert them again to discounted amazon GC once i recieve these

  • Says

"Your gift card balance can’t be applied to orders that contain other Amazon.com.au gift cards."

    Is this something new?

    • -3

      Yep.

      • Oh no gone are the good times that we bought gift cards with Amazon gift cards then smh

    • +3

You cannot use Amazon gift cards to pay for open-loop gift cards (i.e. Activ Visa gift cards and OnlyONE Visa gift cards). This restriction is not actually written in the Amazon gift card terms and conditions.

      • Ah ok so does that mean we still can use Amazon gift cards to purchase other gift cards such as Ultimate, Doordash and so on?

        • +2

You should be still okay to purchased closed-loop specialty gift cards using Amazon gift cards, but I have not tried for a few weeks.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: You can buy giftcards that are sent you your email vs ones that are posted out.

  • +1

What are these used for? Is there some bonus value or something I'm missing

    • Save on activation fee

      • +1

        oh.

    • +2

can potentially pay for services where they charge high fees for real credits. Deft for one is notorious for high credit card fees.

    • Useful for converting cards that do not have Apple/Google Pay since these wallets are more widely accepted (One exception). For example digital only cards (Coles Prepaid MC) or physical cards with only magnetic stripe (Coles Prepaid MC/Vanilla Visa).

I tried after I saw your original comment.

I went to an Officeworks store and showed the webpage for the $200 Activ Visa gift card on my phone and asked for a price beat. The staff member went onto the Amazon website from their own checkout and said that the listing mentions a purchase fee and therefore the purchase fee had to be added to the gift card’s face value. I pointed out that if you went through the checkout process, the purchase fee is never applied. The staff member said that was a price error and they cannot price beat price errors. I brought up the price beat policy on the Officeworks and pointed out that it does not actually exclude price errors. The staff member paused and then said that the price beat policy allows them to restrict price beats to “reasonable quantities”, and in my case, a “reasonable quantity” is zero.

I gave up and left the store.

      • Wait OW still open at this time?

        • No. I tried the day after I saw that comment.

      • +1

All good, thanks Wookie, have removed it so others don't bother.

        • +2

You did not need to delete your comment! It is a worthy comment, but it would be a gamble as to whether you would actually succeed.

      • +3

Hahahahaha… obviously a law student. Zero is such an unreasonable quantity

      • +1

Why would they be so difficult? Do they get docked pay every time they process a price beat?

        • Some of them just want to be a smartarse or wave their decks around.

  • +2

Actual credit to VantageXL whom I got this from

  • +1

Warning I bought a bunch of these Activ gift cards in the past and I couldn’t add anymore to my Apple Pay after 4 cards, if that’s how you are planning to use them. These cards are issued by Blackhawk, and I have similar issues with other gift cards issued by them (restaurant choice), which I also cannot add anymore to my device via Apple Pay after a few. Their investigation comes back as nothing wrong, no block, but they can’t answer what’s the issue. Was a bit of pain to use afterwards, as ATO does not accept these cards.

    • +1

I suspect you may be getting caught up in Apple’s fraud controls, which is something that is probably beyond Blackhawk Network’s control. If you look at Apple’s webpage on Apple Pay and privacy, it mentions they may “determine eligibility” when you attempt to add a card to Apple Pay.

Having said that, the webpage goes on to say that Apple may pass on information to the card issuer or card payment network or other providers authorised by the card issuer for them to do their own assessments of whether you are eligible to add your card to Apple Pay, so who knows what is really going on with your Apple Pay…

      • +1

Okay that’s good to know. I went through Apple support twice and they told me they don’t determine if cards can be added or not, but I’ll point this out if I ask them again. Interesting it’s always Blackhawk though, I’ve used more than a hundred of TCN restaurant cards and other TCN cards via Apple Pay with no issues

    • I’m having the same issue with all sorts of GCs (Home, Restaurant, SB supermarket, etc.) issued by Blackhawk, can’t added any to my iPhone’s apple wallet, and no solution whatsoever….

      • I got a new iphone yesterday and yet still cannot add any blackhawk gc

  • +7

    So a $200 gift card for $200 is now a deal….
Wow we have hit rock bottom

    • +2

Not making any sense to me either

    • +2

You have to stay two steps ahead of inflation… remember that this $200 gift card will be $205 soon! It really helps to stay ahead of the curve, and always be thinking outside the box

      • People who bought discounted coles Mastercards (which can be used only online) can convert to these which can be added to digital wallets, and also physical card. These give more flexibility (fill up car, grocery shopping etc), then just online spending.

  • +1

It now says "plus $7.95 Purchase Fee"

Also, what why are you buying a $200 card for $200? How are you saving any money?

    • +2

CC points among many other things

  • ordered a $100, lets see

  • +1

Is this the same as buying a $100 bill with 2 $50s?

    • +1

Well, that cash of yours is only legal tender in Australia. If you turned it into a Visa card it could be used in over 200 countries!

  • Very smart

  • +1

    How is this a deal?

  • $200 for $200 what am I missing here ?

    • +2

  • Just tried PB with officeworks and page not found 😢

  • -7

I don't understand where is the deal and why people are so excited about this stuff?
You're using your own money, pay $200 and get $200 so where is the deal?
And if you specifically need a credit card, now many debit cards work as credit card too!

    • -5

I know right. This should not exist on Ozb.

    • There were many good reasons given in the comments above. You don't buy these just for the sake of having a visa card

    • +3

      You dont get it.
People buy this using amex to earn points, and then use this visa to pay bills ( which mostly dont take amex card ).

      • +1

Thanks for the explanation and for the contribution to the discussion.
