gah this came a day too late for me. I got a Xperia 10 V for similar money dammit.

    E. Mind you… seems none of these have a memory card slot - thats a must have for me. And it must be water proof. SO none of these would fit the bill. That makes me feel a bit better. I'm happy to trade a not as nice screen or performance for those 2 features.

    • Hey mate where did you get the Xperia from?

      • +6

Kogan/DSE. They are currently $530, but I had a gift cars as well to bring it down further. I hate spending more than $500 on a phone.

        • Cheers. Any idea if you get any sort of warranty?
Kogan are playing the third party card.

          • @Pavvvman: I used my citibank CC which provides me an extended warranty anyway, so I would just go through that.

            • @stumo: Great call. Thanks again.

              • +1

@Pavvvman: Also from the DSE website:

                Marketplace Sellers
Dick Smith provides a Marketplace that allows retailers to list their items on the Dick Smith store and sell their items directly to you. Marketplace sales are indicated by the retailer listed as the seller of the goods on the product listing.

I've not had to do this, but at least they are openly accepting some responsibility for listing these marketplace sellers on their website.

            • @stumo: Are Citi credit cards going away as well as part of NAB takeover?

            • @stumo: Citibank still doing that after being taken by NAB? Will miss the citibank debit card for international transactions.

        • -1

          which model cars?

        • Is there any risk with buying the international version? 5G all bands works with existing telco etc?

          • +1

@da1nonly: Xperia 5G definately works with Vodafone.

    • +1

A better display isn't a feature for me, I turn off things for a better display like higher resolution and refresh rate to improve battery longevity.

Dual Sim and SD card are useful though.

An IR Blaster is crucial for me because I live away from home. Every workplace, friend, Air BnB has a different Air Conditioner, TV or whatever but specifically Split system air cons… 5 units in a single room to control the temperature of a server room and three of them are different models.
I never need to find a remote or replace the batteries for one.

Waterproof, dustproof IPX rating, etc never makes a difference once it's been in my possession for 6 months.

      • +4

Yep battery life is king for me too. I always enable battery save mode anyway, so the performance takes a hit. The 175hr endurance rating on the V10 should alleviate that though.

For me ive had waterproof phones for over a decade, so ive gotten used to forgetting to take it out of my pocket when I jump in the pool lol. So thats a must have.

For IR you could easily work around that with a $15 wifi blaster.

        • Like me suggesting an easy work around is to get an SD card reader.
My limit on phone accessories is Bluetooth headsets.
Not a fan of waterproof cases, charging cases dongles and USBC adaptors unfortunately.
I have a few of them and I can't even give them away

          • @PlaunsJanus: Sd card rwader is a bit different than an IR blaater though. IR is for some kind of fixed device like an aircon. So having to have a IR blaster positioned near a fixed aircon isnt much of an inconvinience, compare to having a SD card reader hanging off your phone while you out jogging etc.

            • @stumo: Bit of a misunderstanding here.
I was referring to an IR dongle which would damage my USBC port if it was plugged in permanently. Which is quite inconvenient including the bulk or having to insert and remove it as required.

What I think you're referring to needs a built in battery, a powerbank or to be plugged in, and a Bluetooth or wifi connection I think.

It also needs to be setup in the line of sight for the infra red to work.
I need the IR blaster in front of me with minimal setup or its a waste of time.

I would be better off getting a 2nd phone for both cases as I move from an office, to a meeting room, to a lunch room, server room, control room, etc daily sometimes across multiple towns or suburbs. TVs, monitors, audio, computers and many other interfaces

Wouldn't even use a dongle if I needed one just once a day. Because it's needed for about 10 seconds and fiddling around with accessories is a painful waste of time for me.

Indoors, I only carry the bare essentials. Outdoors an IR blaster is useless.

I understand the inconvenience of having a seperate device or dongle for music.
              That was my point.

I've had a quick look at alternatives but maybe I missed something that's a game changer.
If you know of any solution which might help me I'd be grateful to hear it.

              • @PlaunsJanus: I was just meaning a broadlink IR blaster, which like you say needs to be plugged in and wifi. But htey do work very well though. I was thinking it was just for use while you were at home or staying overnight somewhere.

I think the last phone I had with IR was a Samsung S4 Active. Even then the range was a bit crap.

                • @stumo: Yeah it's a Chinese market thing I heard.
My Poco F5 and Huawei P30 pro have them
Both are dual Sim but only P30 has storage in the Sim 2 tray and is only 4G, no wifi 6. It's a bit dated

      • My father needed IR blaster. Bought him a USB device. May be another option if happy to carry one around and open up your phone choices

      • +1

Completely agree, high refresh rates on mobile screens is nice but it’s functionally useless unless you plan on do pro gaming, which 99.9% of games don’t support higher than 60fps, no video playback does either.
I would take more battery life over “smooth” scrolling any day.

      Zenphone 9 is waterproof - I've got the 8 and it's a great phone

      Key Features:
      5.9" AMOLED (2400 x 1080) 120Hz display
      Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 processor
      50MP + 12MP rear cameras plus 12MP front camera
      30W Adapter
      4300mAh battery
      Wi-Fi 6 with Bluetooth v5.2
      IP68 water resistance

      • Yes but no microSD. Needs both features for me.

    • +3

Xperia 10V ain't bad if the hardware features are a must have for you.

Speaking for my own needs. Although a better SoC is nice. It's not really a big draw for me since I don't game too much and my phone needs are fairly basic.
      - Email
      - Web browsing
      - Messaging

SD card support, headphone jack and water resistance is well worth it. Plus, you'd be part of an exclusive sub 1% club of people who have a Xperia.

    • Just wanted to check as it is highly unlikely it was the EU version, but your model does not support eSim does it?

  • +3

Would anyone know when the 10 is coming to Australia officially?

    • +4

I asked Asus in fb they replied its coming end of September.

      • sounds good!

        • Will be pretty expensive though I imagine…

          • @AFM7: Likely to be ~$1200.

            • @sridhar: The Zenfone 10 prices at JB is $1299 256GB, $1499 512GB.

  • How does this compare with the last Asus deal?

  • give us non-android-go under $150 moto

  • Assume code wouldn't work on Samsung Galaxy A14 5G 128GB as it is under the 300 spend at 299

    • Couldn't you just place some thing cheap in the cart worth $1 or more to bring it to a $300 cart total?.

For example could you put one of the Samsung Galaxy A14 cases into the cart. So there you have over $300 total to get the discount.

      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/search?page=1&query=Samsung%20Gala…

        • That still wouldn't work for the discount in the online cart as it's 99c. It would be a $299.99 total which is 1c short of $300. You need exactly $300 or more for the discount to apply or else the electronic ordering system will knock the discount code back.

I was saying above. With one of those Samsung Galaxy A14 cases well with the $30 discount you're basically getting the case for free with that.

Edit: just found out that only the clear A14 case is in stock online. My bad.

  • this is like the LG v30+ equivalent 2023

    • +1

Ha. Thats the phone im replacing.but these ones dont have microSD like tbe LG does.

      • If LG still make mobiles with DAC and 3.5mm jack I glady would support them

Sadly they are out of business due to Samsung

    • V30 has HDMI out. Not for the zenfone.

    • +3

No not really. Because V30 came with an extra screen accessory, has DAC which is great for music, MicroSD Card slot. I'm still using it.
Sound quality from 3.5mm is better than any mobiles I have had.

      • If I hadn't physically murdered my v30 climbing I think I'd still be happy using it today.

All these in-screen finger print readers suck and I miss my 3.5mm jack.

        • V50 still exist but can't be bought new…

    • +1

No microsd. Still haven't found anything that's an "upgrade" since 2018

  • The 256GB Zenfone 9 seems to intermittently be listed at JB, it's a shame it's not there this moment.

  • -3

    https://browser.geekbench.com/mobile-benchmarks

snapdragon gen 1 roughly on par with $200 iphone se 2

    not terrible

    • +1

How did you come up with that? You link only shows a listing of what CPU has with each phone.

    • Pick a benchmark that isn't biased towards Apple perhaps?

      • -3

it’s not apples fault android cpus are slow

  • -2

4300mah seems a little low for a modern phone?

    • +3

      It's a small device & screen.

    • +2

It's fine. Battery life is flagship. Easy 2 days use in high performance mode and moderate usage.

  • I just looked closely at the zenfone. I was going to pull the trigger until it said no video out…
Also, still usb 2.0 as the "cheap" iphone 15.

  • Only Asus ROG phone is worth it. Their Zenfone range meh. Gonna skip missed the ROG 6

  • I've been told this phone has calling issue. Is it as wide spread as The internet says it is?

    • Which phone are you reffering to? Zenfone 9?

      • Zenfone 9, sorry. My brain looked at the first word and tunnel visioned the rest

        • Yes a quick google shows many results, i would avoid

  • +1

a bit of a mess around trying to get the A54 using multiple gift cards but I got there in the end, thanks OP!

  • +1

    A14 shows as $379 for me, i.e. 349 after perks… not 269 after perks

    • +1

      Same here

    • A14 sale ended on the next day :(

  • Thanks OP. Grabbed a Samsung A34 for my dad.

As I understand it, the Mediatek SoC in the A34 performs better than the Exynos in the A54, so it’s a pretty good phone for anyone in the Android ecosystem who needs something midrange to replace their current handset.

    • +1

lucky him. Benchmarks vary across the internet but even if it's slightly lower, it doesn't make a difference for regular users, it's a very capable device for the majority. You even get a bigger screen and better battery life than the A54 (should easily do 2 days, maybe even more depending on his use). How many gift cards did they let you use?

  • anyone else had success with ultimate gift cards?
JB Hifi matched the Motorola phone price but with conditions:

"Accepted payment methods through this link include debit/credit cards, PayPal, Afterpay, Zip and JB Hi-Fi Gift cards (whether digital or physical). Third party gift cards such as TCN, Westfield, HIM/HER/KIDS cannot be used through this link."

    • Did you do the price match online? I'd do it instore so you can buy it without restrictions.

      • yea online…so instore has no restrictions, nice!

  • how good deal is Motorola Edge 30 Pro Dual SIM ?

  • I have a question.
Could anybody help me with that?
I've just placed an order for the ultimate gift card.
Are they going to send actual physical card or a digital card by email?
    Many thanks in advance.

    • It's an egift card. Not physical

  • Can someone please help! How do i get the Motorola edge 30 pro for $398? I purchased 4 x $100, 1 x $50 and 1 x $20 ultimate gift cards totalling $470

When i go to JB-HIFI's online store to purchase it, i can only use 1 x card at a time.. so how do i combine all 6 cards? And secondly, the total shows $499 not $469 (perks)

I cannot go in store atm so need help purchasing this online. Much appreciated

    • +1

In store is the only way to use multiple unless others know how to do it online

    • And if you are a Perk member, you should get an email with the discount code $30 of $300.

  • Hi, can someone please tell me how to use the Ultimate Him eGift cards at JB Hifi?
I have two valued at $500 and $75, trying to get the Zenfone 9 (incl. delivery - out of stock at local store).

Can't enter the card details online under gift card/pin - "number must be 18 digits"
At local store - can't hand them the Gift card number details- they want to scan a barcode.
I then added the cards to google wallet, which gives me a barcode for each card, but that barcode doesn't work instore

I'm going nuts here. What am I missing? Please? Thanks.

    • UC gift card should be added at the payment page, not on the coupon/gift page. try this and it should work

      • But total payment is $574.99. I need to enter both cards, one after the other.
Entering the $500 one returns "payment declined" - because it only has $500 value for a $574.99 order.

    • Edit 1:18pm - I think I messed up by initially adding the cards into Google Wallet as "gift cards" instead of credit cards. Might work now instore, maybe (never used my phone for payments before) - they'll probably call security when I show up for the third time clutching my phone and a printout of the gift card details.

      • mobile wallet apps see these as regular credit cards. It should be ok

        • +1

In Google Wallet, I get "To use your card online, verify card info", which requires typing in the CVV (again) and clicking "update". This comes back with "An unexpected error has occurred. Please try later". Is this normal? Will it still work instore? I don't think I could handle another dry run to the store.

          • @tightrump: I'm not sure but I'd expect no errors would be best. Have you tried Samsung Wallet if anyone in your household has one?

            • +1

@shxhshzhz: Just got back from the store - I was able to successfully buy the phone in-store using the 2x eGift cards (split payment) & Google Wallet, despite that "verify card info" message remaining for both eGift cards. All done, finally! Thanks for the replies, guys.

          • @tightrump: Same. tried multiple cards, but same message. I think its only to use these online as credit cards.

        • If we add ultimate gift cards as credit card in google wallet, can we use these in any shops or these still are accepted in stores mentioned in the ultimate stores list?

  • Thank you OP … have been umming and ahhing over this for a couple of weeks and finally bit the bullet before they disappear completely.

The gift card process was pretty straight forward
10mins for 2x e-gift cards to arrive via email
Purchase first JB gift card with e-gift card, then 20mins to arrive by email.
Then purchase second JB gift card. Did them spaced out to avoid any Riskified security errors.

Then went instore to Belmont to grab the last one there with the 2 JB gift cards and perks voucher. No need to wallet add anything, just scan the PDF barcodes at the counter.

The advantage to purchasing the JB gift cards is you can use them in multiples to purchase online, which i would have done if they found no stock in the store. So it's a good backup with stock levels being so low now.

  • How come my Oppo Reno 5g a flagship phone in 2019 has 8GB RAM, the same as this? Would there be much difference? My phone works well still.

    • if it still works well, keep using it until it dies. Reno 5G and Zenfone 9 are very different devices from different times. However, main advantages of the Zenfone include being the only compact android flagship in Australia, much newer Android (and security), much more powerful 8+ Gen 1 flagship grade processor, 120Hz screen, and possibly better battery life.

  • Link for edge no longer works?

    • such a cheap price must have cleared all their stock.
