Just for reference, RE the new version/s:

    https://www.cnet.com/tech/home-entertainment/amazon-updates-…

"Both devices are getting faster, with Amazon touting that the Stick 4K now has a 1.7Ghz quad-core processor that it says is 30% more powerful. It also includes support for Wi-Fi 6 for better streaming if you've updated your router to a model that supports it. The 4K Max takes things a step further, with Amazon including an "upgraded" 2Ghz quad-core processor, support for Wi-Fi 6E connections and 16GB of internal storage"

    • +1

Also an increase in RRP from $99 -> $119

    • +4

Wait a sec, pretty sure the current 4k max already has wifi 6 support, its there in the menu options.

Edit: nvm, its 6e vs 6

    • +2

Don’t have Wifi 6, also don’t really care about internal storage you can get a USB cable to plug-in external HDD if you like. Add an Ethernet connection adapter if you want still cost less than $119 all together. New version unnecessary

    • It appears that there are two models with the same name. I checked the 6e wifi model, and it costs $119.

      • +3

You'd think they'd be bothered to add a + or Pro to the name to help differentiate between the two.

        • +3

It says (2nd generation) when you scroll down on the page. Thats pretty much it, should be in the header tbh

      • What is DV/DA? Should I upgrade from the 4K Max Stick?

        • +6

Google “DVDA” - You may be pleasantly surprised

          • @sash213: Haha I think we were thinking the same thing! Took me ages to find a suitable video lol

        • +1

Glad you asked. DVDA is a band

        • Ignore my previous comment, the current 4K Max supports DV/DA.

      • +3

        collect them all !

      • Wait what new version supports DV? That combined with larger internal storage is actually huge for Plex/Kodi users.

        • Old 4K Max has Dolby Vision, I've used it.

      • +1

Faster processor would be appreciated. I find my current one relatively slow.

      • +3

The existing 4k stick as Dolby Vision and Atmos too.

        • Yup, this is just extra storage and probably having run out of stock for the old SoC.

Full HDMI 2.1 support and improved decode capability to match would have been welcome.

        • Thank you, I wasn’t aware of that.

    • Think original was only 8GB so 16Gb is well worth it.

      • Always runs out of storage.

  • +5

It's very good. With such price tag and size, I am impressed. Not only the Amazon videos, it can also stream 4k via sideloaded apps like stremio with no issues.

    • Yes I have Kodi + Stremio side loaded to the Firestick with no issues. Great deal.

      • Yes stremio is great on it, however for freaks like me who like to watch stuff on faster playback speed it stutters a lot (no problem on Google tv), which I find odd

        • +1

Stremio? Please elaborate for the uninitiated.

          • +5

@pacificstorm: Stremio is an app (they have android, android tv and windows) that allows you to stream content directly off torrents after installing certain add-ons like 'popcorn time' and 'torrentio)

            • @ericshurn: Thanks. Might look into it. Hardly stream anymore since been d/l them instead and using Plex to watch on TV. .

              • @pacificstorm: Yea that's what I was doing too! But since rarbg went down it was a pain to download (I like my hevc/x265 files) and discovered stremio + torrentio
Torrentio has to be installed from their website, not through official stremio app though

                • @ericshurn: Thanks for the info. Do you use an additional vpn or just stremio + torrentio ?

                  • @Torch: I personally don't use additional VPN, just the stremio and torrentio combo

                    • @ericshurn: Where is the torrent from? Public trackers? Magnets?

Can this work with private trackers?

        • +3

I don't have such experience. I have Stremio + Torrentio + Real Debrid + Trakt setup. Works perfectly with no stutters.

          • @edisonAU: Oh really? The moment I went up to eg 1.2x speed it started jittering/stuttering on my fire stick 4k, but no problems on my google tv or NVIDIA shield

          • @edisonAU: Do I need RD with Stremio? I was hoping to move to Stremio and ditch the RD sub. Is it a matter of better quality streams?

  • +2

    $36 combined with this deal

    • You forgot about the 1.5% cash back.

      • +2

It's actually 7% for Amazon devices for both CR and SB :)

        • Then it is 1.5% + 7% cashback.

          • @jimojr: Not quite - cashback is 7% instead of 1.5%, but they'll still be eligble for the $3 giftcard rebate as well…

Edit - Just realised you're talking about the cashback for giftcard plus the Amazon purchase, in which case yes, you'll get 1.5% + $3 for the value of any giftcard purchase from Cashrewards plus 7% for the $39.95 for the Firestick from Ebay.

            • +1

@UncleRico: When you buy $30 Amazon gift card you will get 1.5% normal cashback.

              • +1

@jimojr: Yep - gotcha now. And I meant to say "plus 7% for the $39 for the Firestick from Amazon" rather than "plus 7% for the $39.95 for the Firestick from Ebay". I'm clearly having a braindrain day today…

By my count - that means you'd get $3.60 back on a $40 giftcard @ $3 + 1.5%, plus $2.73 back from Amazon cashback @ 7% on $39, meaning a total spend of $33.67 for the current 4k Max Firestick paid via $40 giftcard, plus a dollar left over on Amazon credit to go towards your next purchase.

        • Depends on how much gift card you bought. Math is hard.

    • Cashback is ineligible on the following:
Purchases paid with any Amazon credit as partial or full payment.

Don't gift cards count as Amazon credit?

      • +1

No I think gift card balance is not the same as credit.

        • Oh, cool. Cheers

  • Take it officeworks and price beat before they change their prices!

    • Seems to be OOS in officeworks

      • +1
        • +2

I am so sick of the people of Dubbo and Tamworth getting all the love…

  • Anyone got this and a Chromecast and provide any input?

    • Both have HDMI input

      • +17

        It's actually output…

    • +1

      Input as in review?
If yes then, Chromecast User Interface (UI) / software is definitely more user-friendly / appealing to use?

Amazon Fire Stick's UI on the other hand could use some work. Icon designs does not look as nice and bigger portion of screen is used for Advertising / Recommendations.

Otherwise, both devices serve more than adequate functionality!

    • +6

Got both. This is snappier and the UI doesn't lag as much as the Chromecast 4k version.

    • +1

I find in terms of performance that the firestick is snappier. But in terms of everything else I prefer the Chromecast. The firestick remote app is useless to me as it can't control volume or turn off the TV (just puts the firestick to sleep but TV is still on), and with 2 toddlers around I definitely use the virtual remote a lot more.

      • Mine controls volume and power of tv.

        • The Fire TV App? Just looked at that app again, still no-go for volume but sleep did turn off my tv this time so maybe there was some update

          • @MeesusEff: My bad, Tv was still on after all. Now can't get it to work on the fire TV app and I have the Max firestick

    • +1

No native Chromecast casting to Fire Stick is a dealbreaker for me. Only casting to equivalent apps.

      • +1

got my first firestick, pixel6 casts to it just fine with no additional apps installed

    • Chromecast, ie GoogleTV (GTV) has Roon support.
GTV is more annoying to use from a navigation perspective.
Sideloading is harder on the GTV.
Both are equally good in terms of HDMI CEC.

So if you want a Roon renderer, get the GTV otherwise the FireTV.

    • +1

I've had so many issues with CC 4k, never buying that again.

Got the remote replaced once, so many times the device just doesn't turn on. Had so much troubleshooting done with google support but they don't replace the device easily.

Got another FS to replace the google 4k.

    • +2

      thats not the MAX version

    • That link shows the 1080p / Full HD fire stick instead of the 4K Max version which is the deal of this post.

  • Can U cast to this device?

    • No casting I'm afraid.

      • +1

        deal breaker

        • +8

I honestly don't get the obsession with casting. A remote controller and apps on the device are so much more convenient than fluffing around with casting from your phone.

          • +2

@PainToad: I often find myself casting because I'm laying on the couch with my phone but the chromecast remote is on a coffee table several meters away.

          • +1

@PainToad: Different stream sources with easier to navigate apps on the phone, or obscure sources which don't have native apps or i don't want to install for a one off view, then send it with one tap to a big screen.

          • @PainToad: Oh definitely. Especially when it bugs out and doesn't cast properly. So frustrating!

      • +4

Wrong. I can cast from my Samsung phone no issue.

        • +1

          You're probably both right.

Fire devices don't support true 'casting' in the Google 'chromecast' sense of the word. However many apps have the ability to send content presently viewed on their phone app to their equivalent AndroidTV app. That's just an app thing but not technically the Google Cast protocol.

Basically 'casting' is both the name of a specific tech and techies will (correctly) say this device doesn't support it, but it's also a general term used by users to mean 'can I send media from my phone to the app on the tv' in which case this does support it, or rather some of the popular apps on it will do so.

Hope that helps. this comes up in most threads about these devices, lol

(then there's also screen mirroring etc. again possible on here, but doesn't use the chromecast tech either)

    • +2

Yes, each time I want to I google 'how to cast to a fire stick' as I can never remember, you'll get instructions for android, ios, pc etc.

    • search for web video caster if you have android

  • +1

I've got a cheap Eko 42" TV in a bedroom which runs google OS and has all my streaming apps installed. Will the firestick make it more responsive? Atm it's quite slow and lags a bit

    • +9

Yes, a lot more responsive. I have both an Eko w/ Android TV and this firestick, and the firestick is much, much quicker.

    • I'd say so considering that a cheapo tv with Google TV OS wouldn't have the best hardware.

Even with using the latest Chromecast 4K, I find that it's slightly more sluggish compared to the Firestick 4K Max.

    • +3

This is how we revived a 10 year old 55" Samsung joy to use now. And it's a FHD only display the fire stick idles along perfectly. 200% recommend.

    • Got Ffalcon as bedroom tv, much faster

  • Anyone successfully running FoxtelGo through a Firestick?

Like others, looking to breathe fresh life into a 10 year old Samsung with a very outdated OS and Netflix install…

    • +9

Yep, few things you need to do to get it.

      1. Sideload Kodi by following this guide.
      2. Follow the guide by Matt Huisman for Kodi Repository for Local Apps
      3. Install Foxtel Go with the repository.

Then use Foxtel login details to login, and works well. Counts as one of your 5 install locations on the Foxtel account.

      • Outstanding info. Many thanks.

    • I did. I think at the time I looked at sideloading. Sorry can’t remember how i did this but Google is your friend.

If anyone cares, F1TV Pro works a treat on this (through a VPN obviously).

    • Which country are you signed up from. Time to get rid of kayo for me

      • USA has been working perfectly for me since the start of the season. Through NordVPN.

It's brilliant having access to all the extra F1 analysis etc, not to mention the ability to switch between different commentary teams. Kayo gave us nothing.

        • Thank. Im going to give that a try. So no issues with Nord? No buffering since i assume need to have a VPN active while watching

          • +1

@DoesntEvenMatter: Yes, Nord needs to be active. Occasionally quality will drop from 1080 to a lesser quality, but only for a few seconds before switching back to 1080. It doesn't bug me at all.

I only have 50/20 connection though so I'd say if I had a faster connection there would be zero issues.

        • How much is F1TV Pro through USA? I've contemplated getting F1TV Pro because the additional features is just so appealing over avoiding Kayo and sailing the seas.

          • +1

@Dswal: It's USD$80 a year. The additional features are pretty incredible. There's a massive library of past seasons, not to mention all the new stuff (current race analysis, tech explanations etc). It's non-stop 👌

  • Thinking of buying a second one for my 4k PC monitor since Amazon doesn't allow 4k playback on Windows…
