For the uninitiated, what’s usually the advantage of the pro models please?
Generally, they just have a significant hardware bump where as the slim also takes advantage of improving hardware, but keeps similar performance in a smaller shell.

@Larsson: Same CPU and ram to keep compatibly.but faster GPU to allow developers to max out the graphics settings for those with the PS5 Pro.. so more eye candy and faster FPS.. all games will run at 60 or 120FPS… vs 32 or 60FPS / 120FPS on standard PS5

The price cut is nothing to do with new release and it's just only temporary according to gamespot.com
SONY has tried very, VERY hard to keep a wrap on the new version that's smaller, runs cooler (maybe with faster CPU/GPU clocks due to a process node shrink) uses less power and also has a detachable disk drive for easy future repair/replacement… WHY would anyone want to buy the old version with the new one on the shelf next to it… SOOOOO they are clearing out the old one at a discount to make way for the new version.. the new Slim "should" also retail for a new RRP of USD $400-$450.. maybe the same price this old model is been discounted too. The PS5 Pro will be the new high end high price option.
This is a smart corporate marketing decision made by SONY not to announce or tell the press about it early.. they dont want people to wait or hold out from buying the outgoing model
A separate disc drive would be pretty ugly, and I’d imagine the RRP including it would be more expensive then the prices now.
Current model doesn’t have issues with overheating and isn’t too big so the improvements aren’t exactly worth much
SONY only looks at numbers..The PS5 cost to manufacture is high.. they already tried to reduce it with a new revision using a smaller heat sink. "current model" The new slim looks ugly regardless of disk drive.. check out the videos online.
A process node shrink allows them to use even less materials to manufacture the thing bringing costs down.
a new low base price is to attract those who have still not upgraded… The PS4 was discounted around the same time in its lifecycle..this is normal
People will still buy it as it will be the only option. They PS5 Pro next year will be the one to get if you want a good looking design.
You can hide the console and only have the drive under the TV. I think it'll be cleeeean.

SONY saves money when a unit under warranty needs to be repaired. its a DIY fix pretty much

They also ditch making two versions and stick with only 1 at the factory…They want to slowly transition to digital only. You don't do it cold turkey. You just make it an extra expense. Eventually, less and less people will go physical.

I did the price match today at JB against BIGW. and yeah used ultimate gift card for $500. Rest I paid with my JB hifi voucher that I purchased previously for 5%.
For me the cost came ~$566.
Given how hard it’s been tanking, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Which console has the cheaper games overall including used older games - xbox or PS5?
I'm thinking of getting one fr my son for Xmas but not sure which one to get.
I'd probably consider looking at GamePass vs PS Plus, whole host of games in both that'd keep them entertained for quite a while IMO

Used games shouldn't vary too much between both. The choice is really based on two factors: Game Pass vs exclusives.
PS5 has the better exclusives bar none whereas Xbox has the Game Pass.
