Awesome value for a high quality set. The ratchet that comes in this set is the best there is.

  • Is this 1/4 or 1/2? In the title and desc it mentions 1/4 but the pic shows 1/2. Hmm

    • The only place that says 1/2" is on the outer packaging jacket. But on the top left corner of the same jacket, it says 1/4". There's definitely 1/4" tools in the box.

      • Was hoping it to be 1/2". I'll check in store tomorrow

        • +1

Guaranteed not a 1/2". Save yourself the drive.

    • I was a little confused about this also. It is only the first pic that shows 1/2" and 3/8", all of the others show 1/4" and 3/8"

I still havent used up all the sidchromes yet

  • Would this be a good set for a bike?

    • Motorbike maybe, pushie not so much.

    • the 1/4” set for $49 would be great for a bike , and they are 6pt sockets so less likely to round nuts. when i work on my bike the 1/4” set is my first go to.

    • Depends on the bike. I've had to use large sockets on cheap bikes.

    • No - the rear axle nut usually is 24-32mm large.
You should get a breaker bar for this purpose, as well as a torque wrench
Many bolts on bikes now are allen head

  • Great deal, with a good range of sockets. Gear wrench performed well in a project farm video. I still haven’t used my spare sidchrome. Must resist

Based on the Manufacturers Part No.(MPN 87022) this is a 38 Pc. 1/2" & 3/8" Drive 6 and 12 Point Socket Set.From experience for general home and auto use there is realistically not much need for 1/2 iinch. The set is also kinda strange, normally the 6 point sockets would be the larger sizes as you are able to apply more torque due to the thicker walls.. Also although the 90 tooth ratchet sounds good due to the small swing arc keep in mind that the more teeth the smaller the internal grip area on the ratchet. Not ideal for a 1/2 inch ratchet which would normally be used for high torque situations. Finally, unless your working on old American cars you'll probably never use the SAE sockets. Not trying to be super critical, just hoping others can learn from my mistakes.

    • There is no way that it is a 1/2" and 3/8" set. It is a typo. Look at the 1/2" socket and inspect the square drive. It's definitely not a 1/2" square drive. Also look at all the smaller sockets. Their size and the barrel shape indicates that they are 1/4" drive sockets. Also, I've never encountered a manufacturer put 1/2" before 3/8" in the description. Normally it's in ascending order.

      • "I've never encountered a manufacturer put 1/2" before 3/8" in the description."

        Now you have.

"Also look at all the smaller sockets. Their size and the barrel shape indicates that they are 1/4" drive sockets. "

Photos and part numbers are the same on both sites.

As I said, it's a typo. Go visit a store and check it out for yourself.

    • I highly doubt this is 1/2 and 3/8. The image of the box contents even says 1/4

Just picked up the 38 PC one .. no 1/2 " drive

Not only it comes with a whole bunch of less than useful SAE sockets, it also randomly skips 16mm and 18mm metric sockets.

I have heard that classic cars argument, as if :D

  • When did we start calling them "SAE"? It's always been imperial to me…

Sounds like someone wanted to keep them relevant and changed the name.

    • +1

Doesn't SAE just mean Society of Automotive Engineers? Pretty sure SAE have been around for a long time.

      • +2

Sounds made up to make it seem fancy and modern imo 😂
When in fact the imperial system is outdated and not used for anything outside of the USA Because they refuse to change.

    • +2

      Imperial sounds evil

      • +1

Sounds good when they match, tho

  • Created my own buy 'one-get-one-free' deal by buying two sets 🙃

  • Oh man, if I didn't already have too many ratchet socket sets, I would definitely buy this. It is a great price, and a very good product.

If anyone wants to see a review, the Gearwrench 90-tooth and Gearwrench 120-tooth are both reviewed on one of the famous Project Farm videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WILuDw5XHXY&lc=UgziWVEam_Fqr…

The takeaway is: The Gearwrench 90-tooth actually gives you better fine adjustment, because it uses a single 90-tooth pawl, but the Gearwrench 120-tooth uses two out of phase 60-tooth pawls. The best of the bunch is the Husky 144 tooth ratchets, I've been waiting for those to go on sale, they will be my next set.

  • Tempting. How would these compared to Sidchrome? Should I buy the 3/8 drive set or wait for another Sidchrome (or other) deal to popup.

    • These are better than Sidchrome for most light-duty to medium-duty applications. If you're working on an oil rig, or in the field fixing tractors all day, the sidchrome would be better, but if you are you wouldn't be looking at a fine-tooth short swing low-profile socket set anyway.

      • I'd consider these to be much better than modern Sidchrome (which is mostly rubbish).

Old Sidchrome (from the 80's and maybe into the 90's) are a different story.

        • Yeah, but old sidchromes are not fine 90tooth ratchets with 4 degree swing and low profile head. They are different classes of tool for different jobs. These ones would be much more useful for the vast majority of diy, mechanical and automotive work the average person is doing.

Lifetime warranty great for those of us who like to subject chrome sockets to a few ugga duggas

    • WTF is a ugga dugga?

      • +3

        Impact wrench

        • ah, makes sense. Thank you.

  • Picked one up this morning - thanks OP!

  • Would this be a good set to grab for basic automotive work? I.e. changing sparks / oil changes?

    • +1

yes, comes with spark plug sockets

      • Thanks!

      • As long as the spark plug matches the size of the socket in the kit.

    • +1

Yep, this is a perfect kit for that.

  • temted, but SAE is dead weight for me. waiting for a good deal on a metric set

  • +1

SAE will help keep the 1971 SIIA Landrover on the road
